Is overlanding /out/ related? Does /out/ build adventure rigs?
>>
Kind of an /ORG/ or /OLG/ Over on O. That is Offroad general and overland general respectively. Org is usually kinder to newer people.
>>
>>1014712
I had a built D1 Rover, 3", NATO wheels, dunlops, lockers, etc etc etc but outgrew it. Now I just run my /out/ings from a relatively stock k2500 suburban

Not really ,
I am putting together my awd overlanding van so that I can get way the fuck /out/ and camp for weeks on end.
That seems pretty /out/ to me.
>>
>>1015092
is this your actual van?
>>
>>1014759
Do you even know what overlanding is?
>>
>>1015130
Even if he does, "random guy in totally empty jeep intentionally driving over the shittiest terrain with no specific purpose other than doing it just to do it" in OP's pic most certainly isn't overlanding.
>>
>>1015202
As long as he has camping gear in the back and goes out for multiple weeks, hes overlanding
>>
>>1014712
>Is overlanding /out/ related?
It's a big planet so sure, why not, if you aren't staying in serviced campsites every night. Ignore the purists who tell you otherwise, they don't actually hike themselves they just watch bushcraft videos all day on youtube.

jesus, that's quite the lift for a forester. I've been looking into a lift for mine but the max is 2 inches before you have to get new axle shafts which don't really seem worth the struggle.
>>
My mate and I broke his sedan after we took it camping. Next time we won't ignore signs that say no car access. We actually almost made it back but a hole in the sump fucked the motor.

>>
>>1014712
What would you say is the minimum viable cost to acquire a capable vehicle and prepare it for over Landing? I've dreamed of doing this for ages.
>>
>>1015318
Depends on where you want to go and in how much comfort.
>>
>>1015231
Well the OP pic clearly doesn't. So w/e I guess.
>>1015297
Mah bad, didn't look that closely, saw "random guy driving over shit just because he could" and assumed late-90's Cherokee.
>>
>>1015318
>buy used pickup truck from almost any manufacturer
>buy one that's selectable 4wd and in good repair
Once you have the vehicle it costs exactly $0 to be ready for overlanding, and it absolutely baffles me why people are dropping $20,000+ to "convert" a small SUV to do the same thing.

Well I'm not a fat middle aged dude. I'm 34, still in the adventure phase of my life, willing to be a bit rough and ready, no wife/gf, no mortgage. It's not supposed to be 100% comfortable, it's about just going out and seeing the world.

I guess my question is about asking 'what are the essentials?'.

Is a fridge even necessary? Do I need to raise the vehicle? Winch? What gear can I not go without? What would be the best bang for buck vehicle?

Right now I'm thinking about starting in weatern Europe and travelling through to china.

Nigger no, not anywhere in North America, specifically cuz of fags like you.

The 1987 4Runner in that article would sell rapidly with a sticker price of $15,000USD pretty much anywhere between Oaxaca and Edmonton.

Hell a fucking Suzuki Samurai still commands a ~$7000USD premium, and they only cost about $11,000 new their last year of US production/import (1995).

Toronto. Just bought a Land Cruiser from 1997 for $6000 and sunk $1500 into it getting it road and trail worthy.
Been through 3 overlanding excursions through it and dunked it in a river 3 days ago so now both E-Lockers don't work and needs an axle rebuild. Otherwise, it could've kept running great on dry and slightly muddy roads.

Yes but a shitty old limo is a horrible expedition rig. Fun tho. Just hang out near roads. Cant really /out in true for m here anyway. Almost impossible to look up and not see a power line or fence to follow. Is cool though cause i got a metal olate in my foot anyway. Getting turned aeound 10 miles ina woods in bad weather would probably kill me anyway.

Call me a puss but fighting misquitoes and packing 80 pounds of tools aint fun for me. Cooking hot dogs and rocking out at a campsite is just fine for me. I may go as far as to drag my shitbox camper out to sleep in with ac.

"Real camping" is cool but fuck yall. You can sleep ina woods. I will take a matress over the ground any time.

Whatever. If u got the cash and its wtf you want then do it. You never know when tomorrow doesnt come.

I could save a million bucks for a mansion bit i could also die before i save 10k. May as well buy 5 $400 shitboxes to rally and thrash on along the way. Fuckit

Just find some lists on google and pack a common 4x4 full. Look up common problems you can fix on 4x4 should it kill.

Take extra supplies and emergency shit and head out.

Id suggest doing a few trial camps close to a town so if u fuck up. U will quickly find what was a waste of space and what u cannot live without.

No I bought mine as is, getting a flat rack and rooftop tent for it and it'll be perfect (apart from being a thirsty as fuck Petrol that chews through $100 a week) Possibly will get a dual battery setup in the future.

Need to get the LPG system looked at because it fucking refuses to start on gas, need to keep remembering to switch back to Petrol mode before turning it off or risk draining the battery to start it.

No driving in rain.
You cannot get these vehicles wet.
>>
>>1020655
>You cannot get these vehicles wet.

What's the point then?
>>
>>1020745
They are great in deserts or just a normal summer.
If you really soak them though, the body panels get a bit melty.
>>
>>1020543
Soft top works great in rain but the doors can leak some drops in between the top of the window frame and the tarp.
If you put a snorkel on the air suction you can drive underwater aslong as the snorkel is above.
i've seen an UAZ drive completly underwater, only the head of the driver was viseble and the snorkel.
They are pretty fun to drive but can be quite noisy over some distance and the original seats are made to give you back problems.
>>
>>1020883
Where did you experience that?
Mine has hold pretty good since 1981 and starts every time during the winter, even in -35c
And haven't really noticed my metal panels or frame really get any ''melty''
Sure you haven't been scammed on some Dagistan knockoff?
>>
>>1017516
Don't blindly buy an "axle rebuild" because E Lockers don't work. Running a few hours of watery gear lube won't burn it out. You definitely should drain and fill the lube, and like the other Anon say, raise the breathers.
Is it the actuators that need rebuilt? Thats not uncommon, I'd just hate to see a guy get sold new rings an pinions and and shit by a sleeze shop.
>>
>>1020655

Hilarious! Do you do standup?
>>
>>1021087

Well fucking excuse me for not being able to tell the difference in body style between a Cherokee and a Forester when literally none of the badging is visible and they have similar profiles, and the Forester has extensive (apparently full-custom, according to others itt) aftermarket lift and shit normally found on Cherokees.

The GAZ66 also came with a diesel engine but those are a bit harder to find.
Plenty of the bigger soviet military trucks ran on diesel but petrol was most common.
