Hey fags. I'm thinking about getting my first bike.

2009 Buell Blast, 1,500 miles. One owner, before that it was an instructor bike, so it's been dropped a lot. Everything else is good.

I want to learn to ride a motorcycle, and get a license.

Bike belongs to a friend.

$1,400 asking price.

Is this a good deal? Good starter bike?
>>
>>17759196
No buell is shit buy literally anything else
>>
>>17759196
And the clutch is shot
>>
>>17759196
$1500 can get you an awful lot on Craigslist if you shop spend a while looking. Get yourself an old Honda Nighthawk and learn yourself how carbs work.
Don't buy a questionable bike from a defunct company.
>>
>>17759196

No don't et a bike with problems for your first bike, you wanna focus yourself and your money on good gear and good fundamentals. Also it's a bike from a defunct company so you put 2 + 2 together.

I would agree with the other anon 1500 can get you some pretty good bikes. Ninja 250, GS500, DRZ, Nighthawk, etc etc there are a lot of good cheap bikes you can probably get for the same price.

they'll be more reliable and easier to fix.
>>
wr 125
>>
>>17759259
>>17759269
I helped my friend fix this bike up. Clutch is fine, shifting linkage was fucked, fixed that.
Doesn't leak oil, runs fine, autochoke works, bike rides good.

I literally want it to learn to ride on, and get a license. I personally don't give a fuck about bikes, and will probably never buy anything else with any power, nor do I ever want to daily one. Just want to own one for a season. Who knows, maybe I'll become a bike fag.

I don't care that it's a Harley, or a student bike. It's light, and simple.

Noqqa there's a reason Eric Buell himself will pay you to crush it
>>
I could use some help from UK Bros out there.

I'm moving there soon and I figured I'd start riding a motorcycle there

I am an old man but have no motorcycle license but I do have my full auto license in my country

So because I'm over 25 do I have to go through graduated license stuff?

i know you guys hate scoots but this one has a lot of sentimental value, so help a nigga out.
my 2002 SR50 ditech got a wash a couple of days ago, i drove it off home after failing to start the first time and it ran smoothly, but the next morning it failed to turn on even after jumpstarting via a car battery and now the alternator makes a whining sound when i press the ignition.
is this a short circuit caused by water or is my alternator fucked, and where should i start looking anyways? fanks

I'm having battery issues on my bike. The bike acts like the battery is dead when I start it but when I take the battery off and measure the voltage, it's at about 12.7, which should be enough. However when the battery is commented to the bike, it reads around 11.6 volts, which isn't enough.

So is my battery too low or is it something else?

Hey ladies and gents. I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm looking for a bike that looks like this. Preferably newer but I'm not stingy. I really dig the older design (is there a word for this style so I can continue looking around?). I also really like thinner wheels, though I don't know what the associated downsides to that are. I also don't have the greatest budget. Any comments are appreciated.

1- do you have a gameboy color
I am not pulling your leg, the Aprilia software runs on a gameboy cartridge
With that you can even unlock your ditech to go 90mph
2- how close are you to Italy?
Lots of small shops there sell cheapo mods for it, even oversized pistons and racing variators
3- your alternator is burnt get an overhauled one and a racing flywheel
>>17759486

If your meter was right then something somewhere is draining the battery when its connected. I'd look for a short. Burned out wire, rubber weathered and cracked somewhere, that kind of thing.

>>
>>17759508
Any old standard, or any retro triumph or Yamaha XSR900 if you feel like dishing out some cash/want something newer.
>>
>>17759491
XSR900 or give up on that style.
Everything else is utter shit honestly
>>
>>17759502
i suppose i could buy a gameboy, does it need any special hardware? parts aren't an issue, i've already found a cannibalized ditech near me, why the racing flywheel though? kinda pissed off about the whole thing honestly, this isn't the first time the alternator shat itself and i'm considering splurging 150$ on a kickstarter kit, not sure if it would work on a ditech though.
>>
>>17759551
Usually upgraded alternators are made to last longer
Lighter flywheel will make it feel more responsive ans should make it easier to start on low battery
If you own an Aprilia you should really invest in a battery tender, even a cheapo 20$ one will keep it happy
>>
>>17759564
this isn't going to be cheap anyways so i'm going to buy the best stuff available, do you think a kickstarter would work though?
>>

Get it, haters are going to hate on things they don't like.
As long as the bike runs fine and you like it that is all that matters.
Luckily there are a lot of blast's around so you can get spare parts.
I think its a cool intro bike.
>>
>>17760018
I have a 89 KLR250. It's a solid bike, super reliable. It sat in my dad's shed for 15 years, was practically never serviced. I changed the oil and fuel, did the valve clearances and now it's running like new.
It kicks over first time, even when it's cold. After warming up, you can basically sneeze on the kick starter and it'll go.
However, the breaks and suspension are terrible. If you have ever ridden something remotely modern you'll hate going back.

I haven't DD'ed, since I can't be fucked getting it registered. I feel like it'd do alright if you don't do more than 100km/h. I'd suggest getting something more modern though.
>>
>>17760030
for the very unconfident it offers a gentle riding experience and a low seat high for the noobiest of noobs. Downsides, it sucks at freeway speed. Honda makes great bikes though so, if you're feeling it and it's cheap. Buy it.

For in the city a 250 dual sport is plenty: you'll still be way faster than cars at lights. Lots and lots of 250 dual sports with that classic 80s Japanese look (many being produced new!). I'm personally really fond of the Super Sherpa for street use.

A DRZ or DR350 is an option for the same type of bike but a bit bigger.

Looking to get an R1, but there aren't too many around me.
Currently between a 2009 with 20k miles and quite a few mods for $6500 and a 2013 with 7k miles, bone stock, uglier paint job, for $9800 from a stealership. What you guys think?

I would go with a used ninja 250 or nighthawk 250.
I rode a 150cc scooter around at 45mph comfy around my city, would do bouts of 55-60(indicated) for a couple minutes.
You could get a gs500/gs500f or a ninja 500 if they are common in your area. More power than the 250 but still manageable.
>>
>>17760593
yeah they can be hard to find idk i love mine
maybe look for a KLX250s if you want a solid dual sport for cheap then that was a pretty solid bike. less power and it doesn't have the modern features like a WR but still rugged and reliable.
shame europe emissions laws are killing dual sports but what can you do

having said all that if you don't give a shit for offroad and aren't sure if you really want a bike for a while just get the ninja 250. keeps its value pretty well, won't rip your shoulder off, easy to wrench, etc. there will always be someone new who wants to buy it

My motorcycle won't start, it just clicks when I try to get it running. The clicking comes from the solenoid. The battery was a little low so I charged it, but it still won't start. I tested the connections, everything looks like it's fine. Even testing from the negative terminal on the battery to the positive on the starter shows that it's getting power when I try to start it, but still nothing happens except it clicks. Personally I wouldn't mind a fatter front tire but 30%-40% of my riding ends up being on hardpack, gravel and such. The skinny front on my FXDB is kind of a pain in the ass on highways too as it gets prone to riding in grooves.
>>
>>17761120
Also, since it was reading less volts at each point of the circuit, is it possible that there's a short somewhere?

I'm not arguing with you guys, it's likely that you know more about this than I do, but it just doesn't make sense to me that it's the battery when it's reading that it should be giving enough juice to start the engine

I'm afraid to take a screwdriver to the battery terminal and the starter terminal any more than I already have out of concern that it will drain the brand new battery.

>>17761134
The battery drops a little every time I press the button to start it, so it's a little inconsistent, but it's always about a .07 or .08 drop in voltage when I check it while pressing the start button.

Like, if it reads 12.18 volts when the bike is left alone, it reads about 12.10 when under load

>>17761142
You sure that won't fry anything?
>>
>>17761158
Ah so it it a suzuki, make sure you've got the kickstand up if you are in gear and that you've got the clutch pulled in as well. Sometimes it's retarded brain fart shit like that. Throw the battery on a charger for a bit then try it, I bet that's the issue. I always charge new batteries before I use them
>>
>>17761199
Don't see why it would fry anything, the charger is just providing the same voltage that the battery would normally give. Would be the same thing as boosting it. I guess maybe it could if you had the amps cranked way the fuck up, but you should be charging on low amps anyways
>>
>>17761199
I'm charging the battery right now because it's reading below 12v now. I guess it's probably safe to bet that the battery is fucked since it's draining this quickly

It just doesn't make sense to me why the starter wasn't moving when it was getting what I think should have been enough to get it going

What I would do is run power to the starter and see if it turns, then if it does get a new battery.

$15k+ in Ameripesos.

That ain't fuckin much better.

I am usually not a harley guy, but the 2018 fat bob is right up my alley. Of course it probably weighs 600+ lbs, but if I had the money I would get it.
I still have mixed feelings about the pegs.

Sounds like you might be the actual unapproachable autist in this situation
>>

Battery needs to be charged for sure, don't see why the starter would go at the same time. When you jumped straight to the starter did yo hook it up right and have bike turned on and stuff? Positive post on the battery to the starter post? Gotta sleep now, good luck
>>
>>17761545

$17,000 USD
Add another $2000-5000 or so to undo the EPA shit, pipes, intake, tuner, dyno time.
>>
>>17761524
Oh gross dude
>>
>>17761399
If you have thrown a known solid voltage source directly at the starter then the problem isn't your battery, it's either the starter or starter clutch system as long as your motor isn't locked up solid. Try searching out a forum with your specific bike for starter/starter clutch issues.

Well you are probably correct, but I am just happy to see a model that is at least cool to my eyes. I am just used to the inordinate amount of chrome in their models which has always been a turn off for me.

So anyone here live in San Bernardino? The place seems like bike heaven for me and im thinking of moving, thoughts?

Spprtbikes always look so good with no one on them. Then they manage to make every rider on them look like a giant faggot.

So I recently found out about these tiny blutooth tracker things, like trackr and tile.
Does anyone on /dbt/ use them?
They seem like a cost effective theft recovery.
I get it's not true theft recovery, but seems like it could work.
Thoughts?

I understand that it'd be slow but I really don't give a fuck about going fast.
I don't like sports bikes. Cruisers, touring adventure and dual sports are my preferred bikes.

Slow is an understatement when it comes to those bikes.
Cruisers don't facilitate developing good riding technique either.
A dual sport wouldn't be a bad option and don't buy new whatever you do

Battery/starter problem guy here

So I did what they do in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z-sDSDD4GE

With both the motorcycle battery and a car battery and nothing happens. I checked with a multimeter to make sure voltage was getting to the starter motor and it definitely is but it's not moving at all. Does that mean my starter motor is fucked and I need a new one?
>>
>>17761660
Not him, but yeah there's a possibility that its a cheap option that may just get your bike back, but if your bike is something you dropped a lot of money on, why not go for something dedicated and have true peace-of-mind? I mean if we're just talking about something cheap and/or used that you're not that worried about then sure, whatever, but then again why care so much about anti-theft in the first place?

If you're worried enough to get some sort of anti-theft/locator device in the first place, you should probably just go for something purpose-build.

Not seriously worried, and it's not an expensive bike, but would still be extremely upset if it got stolen.
I just sometimes park in not so white neighbourhoods, and I saw this today, and it got me curious.
>>
>>17761686
Guess it depends on where you live.
I had my dads stuff in the car one time cause he took it it work, he's a corrections officer, so not quite on the same level, but the gear looks kinda similar. Cop pulled me over and almost got mad I had it in the car and was related to someone in a type of law enforcement.
>>
>>17761695
That cop just sounds like kind of a dick
>>
>>17761704
Could be, I normally don't have any issues with the sheriffs in my hometown.
CHP is almost always chill tho, but that's probably white privilege. Also, I keep my military id in the clear pocket and kinda face it towards the cop when I pull out my dl. Never had it fail.
>>
>>17761687
Muh stolen valor
>>
>>17761674
Best case scenario your starter motor is fucked, if you can put the bike in gear and rotate it without the spark plug in than your engine is probably fine.
Starter's can be expensive if you are bored/want to learn you can try and make the current one function.
