is it ok to park my motorcycle in the hatched areas of car parks?
>>
>>17743436
Is best
>>
>>17743438
Nope. You can get towed/ticketed. Possibly depends where you are. I'm in NYC
>>
>>17743438
Depends, if the hatched area is beside a handicapped zone then no, because people may need that space to pull a wheelchair or walker out of their vehicle.

Fire space / loading zone no for obvious reasons

Everywhere else yes

>>17743438
99% of the time those are only painted to show that you're not mean to park there, because it would look like there was another space missing a border line otherwise. Car drivers ask the same thing

>i can fit, right?

Get over your autism and take up a car space in a way that lets a second bike fit, or take a walk on the wild side and park on the sidewalk (if your bike is small enough)

Sidewalk parking is perectly fine if it's private property and not next to an actual street. e.g. sidewalk infront of a shopping mall by the parking lot. You might get a ticket by a loser piggy but you can fight it and win in court easily. You 99% of the time dont even need to go to court as long as you take pictures right away and know your rights.

>>
>>17743795
Leather if you're only going to be riding when it's dry and warm, Textile if you're going to be riding all year including rain/cold.

Boots should be proper ones with good protection around the ankle/heel/shin. Not these glorified sneakers that are somehow "motorcycle boots"

You probably want at least some kevlar jeans as well.

>>17743805
The knee inserts of every pair of jeans I've owned have been uncomfortable or move around/fall out. Seperate protectors that you strap on seem like too much effort. Not sure what the solution is.
>>
>>17743752
>Suzuki savage
The savage is a cult classic, has it's own culture and aftermarket, etc. I prefer them as bobbers to cruisers, but whatever.

The shadow is a Honda. As such, it's reliable, staid, a little boring, nice to ride around on.

Pick the one that appeals to you, cruisers aren't something you can be to objective about.

Also, have you considered a Virago?

>What should I look for
Rust on the frame should be a dealbreaker imo, as it's a steel frame iirc.
>What should I use to haggle with the guy
again, rust or fugged up paint on the frame that may rust over time: paint is an easy fix but a huge problem if left. Also if it runs funky you might wanna clean the carbs, which is beyond easy mind you, but is an excuse to haggle the price.
>How to avoid fucking it up during transport
If it's far you could put it on a Uhaul and learn on familiar streets back home.

If it's reasonably close then just start slow and do a couple laps around lots before heading into traffic. You're going to learn by making mistakes so you should be going slow enough that a mistake can be corrected without creaming a wall.

Looking at some supermoto type bikes, and I'm not up to snuff with the pricing.. Can I share some bikes with ya'll and you can guide me right? $4k is my max, but I don't want to overspend if it's not worth it.

I really want a KTM 500/530 EXC, but I don't think I'll find one at that price.

Dirt bikes are fine in the winter, through get a bit colder because you get hit by more air. So would recommend getting some warm riding clothes.

you are best off finding something already street legal like a dual sport, it could be a pain in the ass, or impossible to convert a dirt bike for street use depending on where you live, dirt bikes usually have pretty rigorous maintenance schedules too

I was riding my motorcycle and going kinda fast when I heard a thunk and my motorcycle started riding weird. Pulled over and saw the chain dropped somehow

The chain is a little loose but even if I pull on the chain to make it tight, it still drags on the thing in the picture on the swingarm, it's almost like one of the sprockets dropped a bit.

How do I fix this?

Goto community college finance office and find if you can get Pell Grant and lottery money (if in right state) and other student aid to learn something useful.

Auto mechanics never starve if they are any good but diesel pays more and has much less competition.

If you have talent and don't mind hard work, welding can pay well but you have to be a natural at it, see very well at working distance, and have good fine motor coordination.

Machining (learn both manual and CNC is fun and in regional demand because the old guys retired and young people don't usually have gearhead enthusiasm and love for metal.

Mechatronics (industrial control systems, robotics etc) is very interesting if gearhead.

I was a welding and machining student (for fun on G.I. Bill) and worked for my local vo-tech for a while. I've worked as an auto mechanic but prefer aircraft.

Many students turn a modest profit. Financial aid offices exist because if YOU don't get money THEY don't have jobs. They are happy to help.

Motorcycles are fun to wrench but it's a very small career field so unless you are highly determined and already very good I don't suggest going to school for it or making it a career.

Tried my first stand up whoolie yesterday. Front tire came up just a bit before I chickened out. Tried a few more times with no real success, but I got my sit downs to about 10 o'clock or so. Hit what felt like balance point but dragged rear break as soon I felt it.

How get past fear of stand ups?
>>
>>17745525
Also, it might not matter, but what would've caused the chain to suddenly drop so much in tension while driving?
>>
>>17745525
because when you sit on it the chain aligns higher and doesnt drag
>>
>>17745525
Inspect and adjust per your service manual. You many find one for download on a forum or if not someone might post a pic to help you.

The chain guide is supposed to take some wear during rear suspension movement. Also post clear pic of sprocket teeth.
>>
>>17745545
But it was dragging while I was sitting on it though. That's why the yellow thing is all scraped up. It dropped and started dragging on it while I was sitting on the motorcycle and driving
>>

thats a protection so it cant scrape on the swingarm, the chain touching it is normal.

also your chain needs lube dude, its dry and dirty af

Hey Guys

So I want to move on from sportsbikes to something more comfy,so I figured I'd build a bobber/cruiser. Problem is I need to turn it back into original form every 2 years thus something like a boltable back end would be nice. Any base bike suggestions?

Cheers
>>
Motorcycle chain guy here.

I was just checking the sprocket teeth, they're all fine. But, and I have no idea how I didn't notice this earlier, but I saw that one of the spokes on the rear wheel broke off and was wedged into the back sprocket, so I'm guess that's what was making it drive weird. Will I be ok if I just break it completely off and go without it?

I'm hoping that if I do that and tighten the chain a bit, it'll be raised to where it isn't scraping so much on the swingarm guard.

>>17745558
Are you sure it's supposed to touch it? Because it looks like it got the shit scraped out of while just from when I was riding with it fucked up for like 5 minutes.

A lot of people who frequented this thread bought them and promptly crashed. The more sportbikey looks egg new riders on to try more than they can handle and the more sportbikey ergos and steering lock hurt low speed control, which is what new riders have the most trouble with.

99% of people should start on a dual sport or naked regardless of power, not a fully faired "sport standard" pocket rocket. They're just easier to ride and easier to take less seriously.

The RSV4 is waaaay more advanced than my SP was electronicswise.
It's also way more comfy to ride in town, and has way less heat issues. If you have ridden a Duc twin in slow traffic in town you know what I mean. The Ape doens't chug and surge like the Duc does.

It does *not* have the torque you are used to with a Duc twin. It revs to 14+, and you'll find yourself shifting way before peak power. Adjustment period.

Going out tomorrow morning to play with the wheelie control.

Assuming 0 experience in mechanical stuff concerning vehicles, what would be the best way to learn how to work on a motorcycle?

no, just get a working bike and a Haynes manual and do routine maintenance

Your numbers make no sense but if you have a 2 amp setting on your charger that's what you use to charge a motorcycle battery.

disks or pads? Either one will have you learing to use a torque wrench, which is good. Disks ROTORS are expensive and rarely need replacing, disk PADS are inexpensive much easier.

Battery and oil are simple.

Carb cleaning is the great bugaboo of shade tree mechanics... It's stinky and icky and tedious when there rare four of them. It has driven some anons here to forever forswear carbs for fuel injection... There's even a guy (wired george) who makes a living taking in other peoples carb cleaning.

That said, dirty carbs are also your entry into the world of practically free "barn find" motorcycles. Craigslist is full of "Won't start, Was running when parked..." bikes on sale for one tenth their true value. Master carb cleaning and you rule the world.

I like to boil them in water, myself. Smells better than Barryman's and is easier on your liver, too.
