Next step is the SAS swap, already have a toyota front axle in the barn ready for rebuild. Probably gonna use rear leafs from a toyota up front, not sure exactly how we're gonna hang the shackles. I might end up using box sliders for the rear shackles up front.

What's /org/'s opinion on the suzuki jimny?
I know you don't get them in the states and I don't know much about offroading but I'll be on a trip through iceland next month and want to rent one to go around the island and reportedly kinda bad "gravel roads". There are more capable options for rent but I don't want to pay 1.5k€ for a defender, that would be kinda overkill I guess.

The rear end sits higher now so it's much more level. The front axle was also moved forward when I installed the 52" springs, may move it back 1" to make it look a little more even in the wheelwell while still clearing the 37" tire.

Currently has the 35" BFG mall terrains...

When should I finally realize I'm delusional and sell my rust bucker grand cherokee? Today I need to replace the power steering pump after replacing the starter, radiator fan, valve cover gasket, throttle body, and 4 different sensors. It doesn't sound like much but for a college student this is all time consuming and costly. It's not a hobby anymore it's an addiction. I'm a battered wife with stockholm syndrome. I just replace and replace, the spics at my junkyard know me by name already. Initially my limit was if the head gasket blew that would be it for me I'd cut my losses and ditch it on craigslist. Good thing I only paid 800 for ol'unreliable.

I didn't even realize I had slight death wobble after my gf asked me why the cherokee felt more "shakey" before we left. Thos bad puppy is sitting around 260k miles, should I just drive it into the ground until it falls apart or flip it for 1k and break even from repair costs?

By the time you factor in gas for the torches and flap wheels it's cheaper to buy a 20' stick of 6"x1/4" flat bar

In hindsight I should have made a trailer out of it but I needed it out of the yard and scrap prices were up

>>17730726
Got a few things done on them but the rain and heat have kept me from venturing outside to work on them. Got the rear end out of a f450 under it so it's got matching 4.88s now and got all the wiring stripped out so i can rewire it then rebuild the carb

The short bed I got to snatch the trans out so I can send it to monster transmission for a rebuild and tailshaft swap so I can ditch the np203 for the np231

How far are you out that you're gettin g hard rain? Rain this year really makes offroading difficult for the IFS (not so)-master race. It brings a lot of rocks and roots back onto the trails.

in Florida it rains nearly every afternoon from around April to October and when i say rain i mean RAIN. like, standing in a shower with six shower heads kinda rain along with tons of lightning and when its not raining its 94+ with 110% humidity.

im using the factory np231 so i have part time 4wd and the factory speedo pick up and tcase shifter. the only way to get a part time case behind a big block 727 trans is to swap the output shaft with one from a small block 727 or do a part time conversion on the 203 case and since im rebuilding the trans anyway im going with the former

It was some source from an engine rebuilder that just "sourced" the axle for whatever native or hick got that thing.

What else is planned for the Ram? I guess "winter" is the best time to work on cars there eh? I remember driving in Florida two years ago. Bright sun. Enter a tunnel on the freeway and we come through the other side and it is absolutely pouring. Lots of people on emergency blinkers when those 5 second mega showers come through

If you're gonna spend 10k just buy the TJ, way better in every way over the YJ. Round headlights like a real jeep, newer fuel injection, coil springs for better flex and in better shape since newer.

"Jeeps" were licensed to a lot of manufacturers, including Willys, Ford and Mitsubishi (check the J53).
The Landcruiser design however was targeted at not only Jeep, but also the modular body Landrovers. They managed to bring an OHV six to the table when the Yanks and the Brits were still fucking around with side valve fours and building and developing a stronger 9.5" axle compared to either low end Danas or parts bin Salisburys.
So in a sense you're right. As the entire Japanese manufacturing industry was based over half a century ago, Toyota took an existing idea and improved it.

i converted my tj to leaf springs.

the stock tj spsuension is extremely fragile and not really that felxible. so the suspension is a wash.

also, they've all had the same fuel injection system since 1991.

the ignition changed in 1999 as well as the intake. otherwise all the 4.0 motors are for the most part interchangeable.

seeing as the 4.0 will easily last past 200k miles, age is not much of a factor. and you could spend the remaining money to fix up a yj to be potentially more capable and nicer than the best stock tj you can afford.

it all depends on what you like in a jeep.
>>

>Rear Chrysler 9.25 (d60 clone)

>Leaf springs so easy and cheap to lift
agreed
>Bulletproof 225 slant six, 318 and 360 v8s
all garbage. i had a fuel injected magnum 360 in my tj, and it was still a pig. i wouldn't want to imagine it in a truck that weighed twice as much. just get the cummins.
>727 auto trans is legendary for reliability
true, but no over drive
>Np435 Granny 4speed is nearly unbreakable
true, but again no over drive.

if you want a dodge, stick with the later 94-01 years. find yourself a 5.9 gas v8 with an nv4500.

i would still recommend a jeep over that though.
>>
>>17734109
Leaf springs work best when they're long, more flex and better ride. The YJ springs aren't that long, so can't take advantage of a longer leaf which makes flex and ride even better. The advantage I see of the coil/linked suspension of the TJ is the aftermarket long arms just bolt right in, no welding required, like if you wanted to link a YJ.

Also leafs are for poor people, this is coming from someone who's run almost exclusively leaf sprung vehicles. I love leafs, but they have their limits. Linked suspension will outflex and ride better 95% of the time as long as it isn't hacked together by jimbob in his garage. Linked suspension allows you to use adjustable coilovers or air shocks, and last but not least the option to run 0 degree departure and approach angles. Plus the lower links can be landed on and slid over rock ledges while protecting the drive shafts.

IMO leafs are better for longer wheelbase vehicles comparatively to shorter ones since you can run much longer leafs. Also heavier vehicles need heavier leafs which will help with axle wrap compared to a lighter rig. Either way with enough power or large enough tire you'll need a traction arm, which isn't necessary for a linked setup.

To end this long rant, leafs are good enough for most vehicles, but in more extreme setups linked and coilovers are the ideal suspension.
>>
>>17734092
Yeah if you're a stupid driver.... We were doing a lot of rock climbs and the ranger did just as well as my Jeep, if not better in some spots.

Is it just worn out suspension or something? It only does it if I hit a hill crooked as opposed to head on, and it isn't the tires rubbing.
>>
>>17736252
It's the unibody creaking since it's lived a rough life and has no frame to keep it from flexing. All the suspension bits are attached to the unibody, not a great design, that's why we call them Cherocars...

Also why would you put a lift on a ruin the XJ? All it's gonna do is put more stress on an already weak unibody design. We all know you ain't gonna wheel this thing off road ever, so no reason to waste your money on a lift kit and bigger tires and wheels...

As long as they're not Zd30 like every other Patrol elitist owns but isn't willing to admit, they're a tough unit.
Like a lot of the Japanese derived 4x4s with a few exceptions, most things Patrol, Landcruiser, Mitsubishi and anything Isuzu/Holden, they should be tough units.
Exceptions being the previously mentioned ZD30 and even RD28 Patrol, Mitsubishi 4D56 CRDi 2.5 grenade that was in a few of the later model Tritons and that oil pressure injected 3.0L that Isuzu persisted with in their early days of direct injected diesel.
There's not too much inherently wrong with Landcruisers except their usual quirks like leaking spherical hub seals a few have mentioned previously in this thread, syncros that age quickly with unsympathetic driving and an excessive buy in price (that's offset buy an even more excessive resale).
>>
>>17740757
It's the going slow and unsticking bits which break your drivetrain more than the gofast WOT bits.

Suzuki jimni will be cheapest for sure. But it will be obnoxiously uncomfortable. I took a Jeep Cherokee that did well on trails and pretty comfy. Otherwise you can do a Dacia Duster / Suzuki Vitara for that as an option

Defender 110, Land cruiser 150, or Hilux (all on 33s) is a good option if you're doing 10 days should be like $1800.

>>
>>17740959
Galvanised steel is impossible to keep paint over. Undercoat galvanisation is just $1000 and a trip to the tank. Not fully worth it.

You could always buy a shitbox barn door and do a diesel swap. Go take a look at diesel engines around your side and see if it's worth it. Of course, if you're the same guy as >>17740863 then yes it will be tiresome.

>>17740815
Bogpill me on the Mitsubishis and Patrol rallies. My friend from Bangladesh and Malaysia keep saying you can buy older Pajero / Patrols and run the tracks around the place for a chance at some money and a little cup. Apparently a bunch of aussies go and win every year.

Why did only the Land Cruisers make it to North America, btw? Those Pajeros are pretty damn sweet.

>>17740714
Why TB48 when you could 4BT? Lighter with a possible turbo option?
>>
>>17740997
I have no idea about Patrol/Mitsubishi rallies, but either make a good platform for a desert racer. Strong diffs and (especially the case with the Patrol) stout engine gearbox combos to start off with.
Pajeros are damn sweet, and offer an incredibly tough drivetrain even taking into account the limits of an IFS geometry. Similar size rear diff with a 9.5" crown wheel with axles marginally larger than an 80 series Landcruiser, and again a similar size 8" front diff to the J80. Engines aren't as large as the Cruiser, but the 2.8 diesel is still every bit as stout as the Cruiser diesel offerings (Caterpillar even painted the Mitsu 2.8 4M40 yellow and called it their own).
In Australia though, everyone hates Pajeros for no other reason than they don't have a Toyota or Nissan badge, so they're cheap!

TB48 is Nissan's factory gas 4.8 six cylinder in the Patrol, so different league to the 4B-T. I'd still favour the Patrol's diesel TD42 over the four pot Cummins anyway.
Also, I have a feeling the 4B Cummins is at least as heavy as the iron Nissan sixes.

Nice. What are other mods you're doing with them? Instead of re-gearing, you could do a diesel swap in to get a bit more torque at the wheels.

Friend upgraded from 31s to 38.5s and didn't need to regear after his cummies swap.

1HZs and low boost turbos are a match made in heaven.
Might be worth getting your system pressure tested. Normally I'd say start simple and swap the rad cap for a new one, but 2L over a week is a fair bit more than a faulty radiator cap would bleed off.
Another suggestion is swapping the coolant out for Penrite red or Caterpillar ELC (if you're not already using Toyota red). Won't solve your issues, but it stands out like a highlighter on a word document when it leaks.

On another note, love your ghetto false floor setup mate, but try finding another location for that high lift jack...

Can't remember if Cruisers have heater taps, or if they're like the Mitsubishis (constant uninterrupted coolant flow with a door that controls airflow). If they do have taps, it might be worth leaving your heater turned off for a week and seeing if that makes a difference.

MDF? What happens if you accidentally soak it in a river / ocean? I'm afraid of even spilling water on my homemade tables so I epoxy'd a bunch of them.

Here's my setup. When overlanding for less than 5 days, all of my material fit right under the cot. I use old, plastic toolboxes to organise things.

>>17747139
My 80 doesn't have a heat control valve if that's what you're bringing up.

I've never really seen coolant leaks on 80s around here (or on most vehicles that aren't chrysler now that i think about it). But you can probably find it if you overcharge it and run the A/C on full blast. Wouldn't it be spraying out if you're losing it at a rate where you've noticed 2 litres gone?

Aiming for a similar setup with mine. So far I have the empty box and divider and a separate form cut parcel shelf that'll bolt on top. I'll also cut and hinge the wings on the parcel shelf and store a gel-cell deep cycle battery in one side.

why does your 80 have a swing out door instead of a tailgate followed by a flip-open trunk door?

I'd probably get that custom fabed up and do something that mounts into the frame. That'd offer some protection against rollovers too and lawd knows i'd need it

100kg isn't really much for the metal so i guess i'm gonna go with a custom fab or something like your support beam if the fab costs more than a grand.

>>17747294
Custom fab or make one yourself. Have supports along the front go into a U shape around the main support / basket near the rear and middle. Then you'll be able to crawl in from the sunroof into your comfy little rooftop tent.

Mines a 2nd gen Pajero. And as much as I love Pajeros, the single full width swing out door sucks, but isn't a deal breaker.
In Aus our J60s, J80s and J100s had a choice of either the double barn doors in the lower spec fleet versions or the tailgate setup the North Americans are used to.

And that 100kg is for each cross brace. You'd want to use at least four of them for a basket setup.
Tracklander is one company that offers a 500kg rated roof rack setup (at a price). Any further than that and I'd be more worried about over stressing the body structure.

All the sub $5000 cheap GQs I've seen in Perth lately are either undesirable TB42 petrols or the rubbish motors (RB30 or RD28), or they're atmo TD42s with half a million kilometres in the condition of something that's travelled a full million. To find a decent condition unmolested factory Silvertop TD42 Patrol or Maverick with less than 250,000kms you're paying almost a 5 digit figure.
In comparison, I bought the Paj with the tough as nails 2.8 litre (not the rubbish 2.5) in near imaculate condition with 225k kms three years ago for $5000.
And Landcruisers resalewise are another league... On that note, hold on to your 80 series and maintain it. At the current rate you'll be able to trade it for a house in Perth's outer suburbs in 10 years time :D

Pennsylvania won't allow you to swap a diesel into a gas vehicle, it'll fail "emissions" testing. I don't want a diesel, too much money and time to swap in. They're also heavy and this K5 doesn't need anymore front end weight. Plus the added torque makes breaking axle shafts easier.

I'm gonna run 5.13 gears in the axles, I had those gears in my 1 ton axles under my suburban and they worked extremely well with the 37" tires I had on it. Probably end up buying RCV axleshafts for the front 10 bolt axle. I have spare 30 spline rear shafts, hope they don't become an issue with the size and weight of the 37s.

Another thing, if you don't regear after a large tire swap, it puts a lot of stress on the transmission (and clutch if manual), no matter if you have a diesel or gas engine.
>>
>>17747905
>added torque makes breaking axle shafts easier.
Are you implying shorter diff gearing doesn't have an equal effect of raising torque applied at the axle shaft?
And gearboxes and clutches should be equipped as appropriate with different engines anyway.
>>
>>17747992
Lower gears do offer more torque yes, but they offer more torque so the engine doesn't have to work as hard, which puts less stress on the transmission, transfer case and driveshafts. The lower gearing also helps the engine run in its powerband on the highway in 4th gear so the trans doesnt shift to 3rd and back hunting for the right gear, nor lug the engine.

Just adding a diesel isn't a fix all to not regear the axles when running larger tires. Gearing the axles lower does add more torque load to the axle shafts, but it is easier to control since you can go slower, less throttle to get the same torque to the wheels. Running a higher gear with a more powerful engine, like a turbo diesel, leads to more stress on the entire drivetrain, and still puts as much if not more load on the axle shafts due to having to use more momentum and wheel speed to get up an obstacle instead of crawling up it in a controlled manner with lower gearing.

Also like stated previously, I'd rather have the lower power gas engine then waste the money to buy an overpriced diesel engine and a new transmission (and transfer case) for my K5. I already installed a new 700r4 transmission, which I wouldn't be comfortable to run behind any decent diesel.

There are way more gas stations then diesel ones, so the gas engine will always be more convenient as well.

Don't get me wrong, I love big turbo diesels, but IMO they're best for towing heavy shit moreso then offroading.
>>
>>17747992
Also I did the math to compare the torque load, at the axles if i run lower gears with the current tbi 350 or a turbo diesel. Using the same transmission gearing for first gear, 3.06 to 1, to make it simple. I currently have 4.30 gears, and want to run 5.13 gears with the gas engine. My current gas engine makes 300ftlb of torque peak, a stock turbo diesel cummins makes 400ftlb of torque peak. The gas engine with the 5.13s will put 4700lbft of torque to the axle shafts, the diesel would put 5260lbft of torque to the axle shafts.

This also doesnt take into account the first gesr in diesel transmissions normally are lower then in a gas one which would make the torque output even more for the diesel.
>>
>>17747992
I'm putting a lot of stress on the half ton axle shafts, no matter what engine I run, with the heavy 37" tires and lower gearing. Which is why I'll be ordering RCV axle shafts for the front axle after I regear to 5.13s. If the rear shafts become an issue, they are 30 spline so hope not, then I'll order chromoly shafts then.

Low boost turbo setup is the answer. While I'm not intimately familiar with GM/Detroit diesel V8s (I'm sure Murph or Burbalade kif he still posts) will confirm or correct me), I'm sure a simple boost referenced diaphragm operated compensator can be fitted to the factory fuel pump. Have it tuned for reasonable AFR and monitor your EGTs, and often you'll end up wearing hard a more reliable and serviceable engine than the factory non turbo configuration. No reason you won't achieve a reliable 200hp/400ft/lb I'd imagine, which is more than enough grunt for a 3/4ton.

One month later, the TFI is swapped, the ECU is ripped apart to replace leaking caps, couple solenoids being a shit, and I've run at least a mile of wiring through every harness of this little shitbeast.

But I'm happy, because I have something to fix. Once I get the crappy 2.9 working for a while, it's getting a 4.0 swap, Dana 35 front and an 8.8 rear, and probably a 4 inch lift.

I made some progress on the truck, got the old cab off. Gotta pull the engine next and start in on the parts truck.

Used nothing but a hi-lift and some pipe to get it off.

So are you guys waiting, how badly ford is going to fuck the new bronco up?
>>
>>17752184
It's just going to be a Ford equivalent of Toyota's FJ Cruiser. A shallow retro body on the company's medium size pickup/SUV platform. What is there to fuck up?
>>
>>17751951
I know right? Best part is they still have to go back down the trail after to leave.

>>17751858
Probably, but they'll most likely turn out shit.

>>17752184
The project manager has an old Bronco from the 70s and has gone record praising the original ones, so I still have faith for now

>>17752213
1. No removable top
2. Rebadge the Everest as the Bronco
3. Crossover

There are ways, especially with so few details out... believe me

1. No removable top
Not a deal breaker, but wait and see.
2. Rebadge the Everest as the Bronco
It's all but confirmed to be more than a rebadge. Besides, Everest is a good truck. It's literally what the Explorer should be.
3. Crossover
It isn't... There's plenty of details out there.

My 99 4.0 grand cherokee is throwing white smoke from under the intake manifold from the exhaust manifold. What coult it be? Bad head gasket? Cracked head? I did a block test with test fluid and it came up negative but it fucking smokes, can't tell but I think it smells sweet so i believe it to be coolant. I've been looking at the 7.5 super duties, theyre pretty cheap here. How well do they handle offroad? i used to own an excursion and it was pretty fun offroad.
>>
>>17756036
you mean 7.3?
theyre ok for the most part. never going to be outstanding bc they have such a long wheelbase but if youre just doing basic stuff they are pretty good desu

If its coming out in the center (between cylinders 3 and 4) its probably a cracked head. Otherwise assume headgasket. Either way, your taking the head off so HAVE FUN

IF it is cracked (since you probably have the crackl prone 0331 head) head to a junk yard and find a 7120 head from pretty much any 4.0 between 91-95. An 0630 will also work too, which you might also have.

Also check your cooling system and flush your radiator and such, the cracking head problem only really happens when the engine is forced to run hotter than it should be due to poor cooling performance.
