hey guys so im trying to learn how to wheelie my ninja 250. i have a gixxer 600 i could use too but i am too much of a pussy. i am thinking about downing a few shots of booze and just trying to get the front end up on my ninja in my driveway. it can only come up in first gear anyways so i don't need much room (i think) or much speed. thoughts?
I saw a boat today
It was huge

Are air filters snake oil? Or can I prepare my bike for horsepower gains later on by swapping out the exhaust and jetting/tuning the carbs?
My Maxim 650 is probably hovering at about 60 hp. I'm also thinking of swapping some cogs out to get better acceleration. Really give it a little more pep.

>>17500256

>>17501530

>>17500256
Roughly 90mpg.
>>17501806
I wouldn't, either.
>>17501744
most OEM elements are paper shit.
Any engine will perform better if it can breathe better... so yes.. as long as you jet it correctly,
>>17501744
>Are air filters snake oil?
kinda, if you get one of the race filters that you can practically see through you will obviously get a measurable benefit
>>17501806
>>17501824
K&N is the first brand that comes up on google. What are some brands you would recommend?
>>17501854
K&N is high flow, you'll get a little bit more air intake which will slightly help, but it'll let slightly more debris and shit into your engine too.
>>17501825
>>17501844
So I should see a benefit if I also tune my carbs then. Should I really just start at the carbs and simply rejet them so I can put more fuel in, then go for a better filter so I can get more air?
I also don't want to go with pod filters. Gonna keep the box.
>>17501854
K&N
>>17501864
they make all kinds, and no... they're not going to let "debis and shit" into your engine. Keep it oiled and clean!
>>17501864
Well I definitely don't want debris. So can I have my cake and eat it, too? I imagine if I gave no shits about debris, I'd just run velocity stacks.
But I do actually want to ride my motorcycle.
>>17500256
35 city/40 highway
It's okay
>>17501876
>start at the carbs and simply rejet them
well you have to know how much more fuel to put in
>>17501876
depends on what you're ultimately shooting for.
More fuel = cooler engine, but side effect of a waste of fuel
More air = leaner engine (hotter), side effect pinging / pre-ignition and heat damage
Balanced, tuned engine = more vrooom all around.
if you just do an exhaust and intake swap, you will only get you a marginal 3-10 hp increase.
You want strictly HP? You're going to need engine work.... cams, headwork, bigger intake, etc...
>>17501889
Sprint Filters are pretty good, they're a different material than most filters and are completely waterproof. They're better than cotton filters in almost every way, just pretty fucking expensive for a filter.
>>17500256
around 60mpg
>>17501889
It's just a give and take, higher performing engines don't last as long.
>>17501889
don't worry about the debris thing, most aftermarket filters perform at least on par with oem as far as filtration
>>17501924
what this guy said
>>17501907
True enough.
>>17501921
Keep in mind that I am running an older bike. That means no things like catalytic converters or fuel filters or other such nonsense. So an exhaust swap has some good potential. And I am starting with less power.
I certainly don't need to make more than double what the engine does now. Of course the simplest way to upgrade the amount of power is to swap out the motorcycle. But I would also like to do a bit of tinkering. I can always get a bike to ride daily.
I'm fine with wasting a bit of gas in the initial stages of the tune. Heck, just getting my bike to run well took a few tries. But now we're sitting at a happy 800 rpm idle and a smooth startup. When I got it in May, idle was at 2,000.
I'm still learning.

>>17501986
This guy doesn't really go into enough detail with the "but..." aspect of things, unless he does in the last 1/3 of the video. His accent is kind of a pain to listen to.
The poster asking questions is running a carbed bike, so as long as it's adjusted a bit, simply putting in a better filter will definitely help. Slip-ons are lame but full exhaust swaps help, the racing exhaust on my grom squeezed out around 2-3 more HP and that's a fucking lot when stock is around 8-9 (mine is bored out so it's more like 15, but still >10% increase in power is nothing to shake a stick at).
ECUs can also be flashed, the first 50 miles on a flashed ECU is its "learning" phase and it will try to adjust itself to the optimal mixture. Unless your bike doesn't have an O2 sensor working with the ECU, you don't need a power commander to see the benefits of a better airflow system/exhaust if you just flash it.
>>17501986
That's a neat video. But I'm running a bike that's so old that very little of it applies. The equation is pretty simple. More air, more gas, more boom, more speeding tickets.
I think I'm gonna poke through the sprint catalog. If they don't have a filter which matches my bike, I'll pick up the K&N. Then I'll richen the mixture screws a bit if it runs more lean. At the end of the season, I can swap the exhaust.
Until then, new cogs to increase torx and give me more power I can apply. I already took the bike to 190 kph, and I didn't even get close to red line. I could totally stand to lose top end if it means gaining acceleration.

Depends a lot on how it is ridden.
If commuting very conservatively under or on the speed limit it gets about 5.5L / 100km, or about 42mpg.
If ridden at 120km/h all the time on the freeway and 20 above the limit everywhere, about 6.5L / 100km or 36mpg.
My F800R had way better fuel usage, I could get around 4L/100km or 58mpg on average but it wasn't nowhere as silly as this bike is.
All this mpg talk has made me feel a lot better about my gas guzzler

>>17503480
It does have a parking brake. It's where the clutch would normally be but further forwards so you don't accidentally lock the rear wheel trying to shift.
You can have a go on the understanding that, if you wreck it, I'll be riding your Africa Twin back to Blighty with a few €500 notes in my pocket.
My engine temp sensor is a bit borked, it think s the engine is too hot so it stalls when I come to a stop and the idle is very rough.
How dangerous is this? I need to do a 70 mile trip on it tomorrow.
>>17503438
Flossing prevents cavities between the teeth anon. I should know, I just got two there from not flossing
Posting turbo fz10 to keep on topic.
>>17503492

The engine could seize and, if you don't immediately grab the clutch, you're going to lock the rear wheel and eat shit.

Temp sensor adjust fueling on FI bikes. Normally when they fail ( implausible signal ) the ECU will compensate by dumping more fuel to keep it from melting down.
If it starts easy dead cold and then runs sluggish when warm this is likely what it is doing. It's rich as fuck.
>>17503577
so is that dangerous or is it just drinking a little more fuel than normal?
I don't give a fuck about repairing, I'm getting a new bike next week but I do need to use it to get somewhere on wednesday.
>>17503577
Oh and actually it's the other way around.. doesn't start too well, the idle is very rough, it stalls when I come to a stop but its totally fine when on the move.
>>17503574
Then buy the German 2 wheeled dumper truck.
>>17503551
I guess you could throw the textiles in a top case and lock the helmet to the bike.

>>17503640
>>17503589
It CAN dump enough fuel to wash down the cylinder walls causing the piston to seize but you would have to have another issue causing even more extra fuel, like a leaky injector or a failed TPS. Modern stuff is really good at dealing with one failure, start stacking them up and all bets are off.
It's your ass, therefore it's your call.
>>17503479
Nothing some brasso and steel wool won't fix.
>>17503649
Now the problem has gone away, but it will be back later. It generally goes away if I don't use it for a few days.
>>17503635
>Depends on which side, the south side is filled with niggers
I see what you mean, with all those krauts invading our heimat in summer.
Sudtirol uber alles :^)
>>17503591
If this is the case it's probably lean, it needs extra fuel to run when cold because of the lack of heat in the motor to help ignite the mixture.
If it's not idling well when warmed up too you have more than just a bad temp sensor.
Pull and check the plug, black is rich as fuck ( the irony ) white is lean.
>>17503666
>Pull and check the plug
you mean the spark plug?
When its warmed up it idles alright so I think its just the temp sensor.
Weather has been very warm here as well recently dunno if that affects anything.
>>17503646
Good post.
>>17503752
I would get the 900 if you can, the 700 is very underpowered.
>>17500498
I have a sprint 1050, I did a -1/+3 sprocket swap and get between 28-35mpg, this motor is definitely thirsty. Buddy has the tiger 800 and consistently gets 20+mpg more than me, but his 800 won't go 150 so I'm OK with it.
>>17503871

>>17504062
Yes, it looks like a 9 year old's attempt to design a poorly disguised Transformer.
>>17504163
It doesn't transform?
It seems like there's a consensus in the bike community that bigger is better, but 250cc bikes still do 70+ mph, so what reason is there to go for bigger bikes, especially when they get less mpg?
I understand that more power is better acceleration, but generally speaking(Specifically would of course vary a lot between all the bikes.) just how much of a difference does this power really make?
Maybe I'm just slow, but to me a 250 seems like it would be enough if you're gonna be limited to highway speed anyway.
>>17504277
Let's just say my bike is at the speed limit of an highway (130km/h) in 5 seconds and 5 seconds later I've lost my license.
>>17504277
A 250 has to rev higher to maintain highway speeds, so it's more fatiguing. Also, when you throw luggage on there, the extra torque is very welcome.
>>17504277
Put it this way, i can be at 2k in 6th on my 750 or i could be flat out in 5th on my 125 and be doing the same speed
>>17504062
Maybe not good but I think it looks fine, I prefer the angry transformer eyes and edgy vents and shit to stupid "retro styled" hipster bait.
>>17504326
>so it's more fatiguing
this is purely psychological
>>17505023
Higher revs wear down the engine more as well.
I hope that's what's meant.

I imagine one of those square pillion bags (Oxford make a 50l model) with a pillow would do the job. Personally, I find a level 2 D30 back protector provides more than adequate support.
>>17505542
I'll have to look into those; thanks! I get mild to moderate lower back pain after a couple of hours due to poor lumbar support over thousands of hours at my job. The old style chairs we had pretty much just supported your ass and shoulders and nothing else...
>>17505582
Might I suggest core exercises? I used to suffer from a similar problem, a physio made me strengthen my upper abdominals, which took care of the issue.
>>17505649
I could stand to do more; my core is already pretty strong. No six-pack anymore because of good Midwestern food and being 32, but it is reasonably solid. I'll look up some specific ones though; can't hurt!
