What do you boys think are good fun/commuting bikes, i don't really plan to go to the track or anything like that, so i've mostly been thinking about 650 nakeds like the mt 07 and the z650 or the stripple, i'm pretty keen on the z900 but im not sure if i should spend that cash if i don't plan to really hoon fast or anything like that

Can't decide whether to love or hate them. On one hand they remind me of the cuntbags that hoon through town almost every night on their single cylinder supermotos. On the other hand they sound like old tractors, and I like old tractors.

Anything that still has relatively cheap hard luggage being made for it. There's nothing like being on a bike and not being able to buy bread because it'll get smashed under bungee cords or stuffed into a soft case.

Commuting doesn't demand a lot of long range comfort but might demand short range highway comfort (~30min), and it doesn't demand a lot of performance in terms of top end power or torque, so just pick out a bunch of bikes you can afford to buy and own and test ride them.

So basically SV650 or MT-07. GSX-S750 and Z900 don't have decent luggage available because they're simply too sport focused, CB650F is too expensive for its power output, Striple is too expensive altogether, Z650 doesn't even have a 270° crank and will sound even worse than the already borderline MT-07 poop-twin.

Because they are of the highest quality.
Lets compare a genuine KTM piston to a Wiseco piston for an example.
Genuine KTM piston is cast giving a longer life to the piston and less chance of failure when cold, a genuine KTM piston in a race bike can expect 150+ hours of use before it needs replacing, i have seen some do 300+ hours and still be fine to go back in the engine with a new set of rings.

Then we have the Wiseco piston which is forged, these pistons tend to shatter if you give the bike a gut full while cold and do not last as long, on average you can expect around 75 hours out of a wiseco piston and i have never heard of one making over 150 hours.

Theres your price difference, reliability.

Though debatable that the wiseco will give a power increase over a genuine ktm piston.

Friend of mine owns an asinine amount of land out in the middle of nowhere and we're thinking about buying a cheap dirtbike to fix up and ride around there. He's never ridden before so we're looking for something pretty easy to learn on and we're both into wrenching so we're cool with a project as long as parts aren't too hard to find. Thoughts?

that engine up above did about 15,000km off road before it blew up and it only really blew up because it wasnt started for more than 2 years and the bottom end bearings rusted which caused them to fail after about 15 hours of riding when it was finally started again.

>genuine KTM piston

KTM pistons are (mostly) made by Mahle. KTM has never made a piston in their existence.

Forged vs. Cast is mostly about production numbers. Forged blanks can be finash machined to suit for an acceptable cost at aftermarket volumes. Cast pistons require a model-specific injection mold for each application, at a capital cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Really only good for a sizable production run. The stuff about shattering, etc is nonsense.

That being said, One of Mahle's things is low-cost high-production forged pistons. Also, screen-printed coatings and skirt treatments. As they are KTM's supplier of choice, we see a lot of forged pistons in KTMs.

far too heavy anon. 2wd bikes do exist, but you have to pay a pretty penny - it makes more sense just to buy a four wheeler if you need the extra traction that badly.

Expensive and difficult to maintain. If you want AWD, get a utility quad, if you want nimble that can tackle most terrain, get a dirt/enduro bike.

Eraldo Ferracci told me how that bike was developed. Such a nice old guy.
They had a twin on the dyno for a torture test. One of the cylinders failed. Eraldo and whoever he was working with saw that thing one functioning cyl was still putting out decent power. So they kept the test running.
He said later when Ducati was having financial troubles, he went to Italy on vacation and personally assembled the remaining Supermonos at the factory.

When I got my racing license fucking forever ago @ Penguin racing, one of the teachers there, Eric Wood, had a Supermono. Best looking and sounding bike... just amazing.
I asked Eraldo if he could make me a new Supermono out of an 1198 motor, and he said he would love to but was just too busy with his shop. Now that he has sold it....hmmm....

air cooled motors can have problems dissipating heat when stopped and this can fry motors if you get stuck in traffic on a really hot day, on top of that water cooling keeps the motor within the ideal temperature range much better which means you are less likely to have parts failures, oil degradation, and the engine can be pushed to higher performance levels safer.

Will it be ok? Is it ok to ignore it for now? Yes I know its not ideal but it seems to be alright for now. Seems like once its moving everything is fine.

Reminder to be careful using ghetto luggage options. Had my bike blanket just held in with bungee cords next to backpack (held my same) and it went straight into the real wheel today. I only discovered it because rear brake felt squishy.

Now I have to buy a new cover. Stay safe.
