real problem for me right now is lifting the rear up--I don't think I can just go under the engine block, since there's an exhaust there--and of course that would be a problem with exposed shock too.

yes it is easier and cheaper which is why a lot of budget bikes use direct connections between swingarm and frame.

its also a lot worse because it severely restricts suspension travel compared to a link system.

guess who crashed lads
on holiday in corfu (greece) with gf (pic related)
obviously i ride, have a zxr400 back home. rented a 125 scooter and was cruising around, she wanted to have a go, so i let her drive for a bit, me sitting on the back.

fairly chill roads, lightly twisting through a lovely foresty area. was porbably going about 50kph and we came upon a really gentle left hand bend and she obviously panicked and just forgot to turn / lean. I reached over her left shoulder and pushed the handlebar a bit to try and get us round the corner a bit which i think did help to an extent, but we still went into the gutter bit at the side of the road and must've basically just lowsided on loose gravel / bits of tree etc. slid a fairly long way, both of us were just in tee shirts and shorts, silly i know. She had 6 stiches, in her eyebrow and knee, somehow managed to slide on her face. Apparently i had the reflex to put out my hands, so there's a patch on my left palm which was ground down to the fat and my left knee is pretty deeply ground down too but i'll live.

moral of the story here? 1) wear leathers and 2) maybe dont let unlicensed inexperienced people drive your bike.

how did that happen?
i've ridden for 15 years and i have yet to drop a bike or crash. (knock on wood)
used to go on 200km journeys on dirt roads with some rivers in between. there is only one simple rule i followed. and that is to never lean when there is any sign of moisture or loose gravel. vid related is a road i used to rode through when i was a teenager.

Why people think carbs are hard to clean? The jets on my VFR were clogged with dirt, so I took out my jets, soaked them in isopropyl alcohol for an hour or so, and put them back in. I was thinking it would be a nightmare.Carbs essentially work like toilets.

The hardest part was getting to the actual carburetors themselves. Or dealing with stripped screws.

You're right, I just don't have a carbtune and RC36.1 viffers, the carbs don't have the vacuum take offs built into them, unlike the RC36.2.

This is just stuff I remember from when I was dreading doing this kind of stuff. The facelift of my bike was easier to work on and sportier.

you can die from standing straight up if you hit your head on the ground. next time if they have shit helmets, dont fucking ride. if you dont have gear, dont fucking ride. if you are letting an unprepared novice rider take a bike for a spin with somebody riding bitch, DONT FUCKING RIDE

you are the reason people call them donorcycles. let some stupid bitch control the bike with a passenger, no gear, barely any helmet on that detaches in a low speed crash to a ditch. what if there was a chunk of asphault in the ditch and it smashed your skull open, grasshoppers and ants eating your brain as they scoop you into a bag

My last bike had the valves due, and needed tires and brakes somewhat soon. I kind of wanted to upgrade anyways so I sold it to someone who didn't do their research or know what to look for. Depends on the fairing and weather.
If you're thinking of freeway riding, but don't do rain--quarter fairing to get the air away from your upper body.
If you ride in all weather, look into your options for full kits or half with leg protectors.
Sportbike fairings can be kind-of hit or miss when compared to sport tourers or dustbin. (ST1300, concourse, NT700, p-Coast)

Or you could stop caring what your daddy thinks, and just buy a scooter.

i have come with questions for the /o/rb of wisdom

1. when you buy a motorcycle for the first time do you just walk up to the dealership, buy it, and then drive home? i assume you take it for a little test drive first or a spin around the block or whatever but for the first time you ever get a bike it seems kind of nuts to drive it all the way home. how did you guys do this?

2. am I getting memed on by Big Motorcycle or am I really going to have to spend like 150 bucks to get a quality helmet?

3. how did you guys learn to ride? permit + practice or motorcycle preschool? i'm thinking about doing the schooling, for those of you that took those courses (the 3 day ones specifically) how prepared did you feel afterwards?

4. i've been driving cars for like 4 years and I'm pretty damn good at it. I've been biking my whole life. how difficult is motorcyclesing compared to those? i've also never driven manual but I assume options for that exist in the motorcycle world as well.

ty in advance

1. I am European. We learn to ride before we buy a motorcycle.
2. 150 bucks is low. I spent 400. Stop complaining. Get one that fits properly.
3. I took lessons. They are mandatory.
4. Its easy as shit if you are not a retard that does wheelies while drunk at night 1 hour after losing your anal virginity. Easy to learn, hard to master.

np

>>17382702
Thankful the heat has died, gonna be painting inside of a building tomorrow, same old same old

>>
>>17382695
1. similar to buying a car. Test ride is a good idea even for new bikes because they all have different ergonomics and even if you really want x brand by y make, the ergos may just not be right for you and might make you consider a competitor by another manufacturer. You could certainly ride it home but there is always the option to trailer it home too, which I did for mine even though it was a CL buy simply because it was too cold at the time and I was on limited gear.

2. There are decent helmets to be had for ~$100, though I wouldn't really go lower. Key there is certs, you need at least DOT, with Snell and ECE additionally being preferred. Anything above that is features and ergonomics.

3. I got a permit then took a BRC, easiest way to do it IMO. Even as a total noob with no experience, they give you all the basic skills and it's generally a solid option no matter what. After mine I felt pretty well prepared; I was still a little anxious getting on the open road, but no more so than when I first started driving.

4. Not so many automatic bikes, but anyone can learn to drive manual, and bikes are more forgiving for it than cars are. If you've been bicycling a lot you should already have at least a bit of a feel for lean angle and things like that, but since motorcycling is at a much higher speed you'll need to be more aware for things like approaching curves and how severe they are and road conditions in general
>>
>>17382716
Yea I did some riding today befits the heat got bad. But the rain cooled it down a bit. Hopefully tomorrow it's nice so the local car show is good to go.
>>
>>17382695
1. Don't buy a bike if you can't ride
2. $150 is cheap as fuck for a helmet. As long as it's DOT approved you're okay.
3. Motorcycle classes (take 'em you wanna-be statistic)
4. Car skills don't apply to motorcycles. I've never driven a manual but I have no problems on bikes. Autotragics suck, don't do it.

Covers break all the time on these bikes, that JB weld is stronger than the factory case itself.
>>
>>17382728
not that anon, but it's always something that perplexed me, too

would taking the 3 day course through give you enough on-bike experience to go buy a bike a week later and then ride it all the way home on your own? assuming I am a person with no friends who ride, and no access to a towing vehicle/driver
>>
>>17382733
Yea. It's a local thing that goes all summer. My old man might bring his Studebaker.
And funny enough I've been thinking of getting a camel back to have for the summer
>>
>>17382738
If you stick to the back roads and don't try to go on the highway you should be okay. Just don't try riding on the highway or in high-traffic times when you're still getting the hang of it.
>>
>>17382695
1. I don't know, have never dealt with a dealership.

2. You're going to have to spend $150 or more for a good helmet and another few hundred bucks on gloves and a jacket, unless you're down with constant finger blisters and road rash.

3. Having no prior experience other than occasional half-assed dirt bike riding in the woods I took 30 hours of lessons over 3 weeks prior to my road test, $850 CAD after taxes and bike rental (Yamaha V-Star 250). I felt very confident in my riding and over-prepared for the test by the end of it, I absolutely believe it was worth it and would recommend it to all new riders.

4. I consider riding a motorcycle much more difficult and involved than driving a car. You must learn proper counter-steering, leaning, body positioning, lane positioning, not having auto-cancelling turn signals, group riding skills, and manual transmission use (helps if you already drive a manual car, but you'll still have to get used to the gear order and using your foot). Can you just hop on a bike and go without paying for long, expensive, and challenging lessons? Absolutely, but you'll feel a lot at ease in traffic and you'll be a lot more fun to ride with if you do it the long way.
>>
>>17382738
I'm assuming you're a burger. I don't know how the MSF courses work, but here you have closed-circuit and on-road segments where you learn the basics. It won't make you an amazing rider but you should be able to get from A to B in low traffic.
>>
>>17382746
Lol I'm sure you'll get a lot of "I had one of these back in the day"

without fail every time

I'm sure you can just throw one over your leather jacket and wire the tube into your helmet

1. If private sale, seller may willing to deliver to your place in his pickup or you can borrow a pickup or rent trailer etc. To get it home. Dealer also may deliver for fee.
2. Not sure. Spent 300ish on a discount Shoei and its very nice+durable and doesnt 'feel cheap'.
3. Never took a course. Daddy taught me on his Serow out in the country. Just get some practice away from traffic, study applicable laws, then go take your test.
4. Bike, I think especially mountain bike handling skills will translate into motorcycle handling skill. I feel sorry for you -learn manual or you'll have to ride scooters or rare DCT bikes.
>>
>>17382738
yeah this is the scenario i was basically imagining, obviously it's retarded to buy a bike without training to ride first but it seems kind of nuts that you can just take a 3 day BRC, and then be certified to buy a motorcycle from a dealership along the highway and peel out for your first ride straight into 60 mph traffic. it sounds like there's more to it than that so I was asking what everyone's experience was.

fuck that, I got some ebay turn signals to replace the signals on my old Vulcan because the rubber stalks were getting crumbly... The ebay lights were terrible -- not water tight at all and one of the bulb sockets had a shitty tack weld to its bracket and just broke off and hung loose when I tried to put a lightbulb in it.

I pulled them off, threw them in the trash and spent $30 a piece for 4 OEM replacements.

So after I put my bike to some high revs and moderately rough acceleration the other day, the low oil pressure light came on. I pulled over to check and make sure I didn't spring a leak, and everything looked fine, dipstick didn't really make it seem like I was low on oil, and I've been riding it a bit since and the bike hasn't had any change in sound, feel or function. Since the initial occurrence, the light has gone out and come back on a time or two, not flickering, but maybe in 30 min to 1 hour spans. Anyone have any insight? Should I just change the oil and filter and see what that does?
>>
>>17382695
Let me chop this down to no 1 only.

The dealership:
-20% chance of fairweather test philosophy. If it's not raining, and your paperwork is straight, they let you ride with one of the greasemonkeys.
Otherwise, call ahead to see if they have demo days. That's a giant group ride, where you sign to test whatever you want back to back.
Don't give your business to places that don't do test drives. Just buy a greyhound for up to 300 miles. You'll enjoy the way back.

-They will sell you the biggest bike you're dumb enough to buy. Do research on the lineup to see what's light, has low center of gravity, etc.
Additionally, people expecting car dealership style fellatio will feel bullied by the "active" style of recommendation a bike requires. Shut up and learn something, just keep your whits so you don't end up with something completely different from target.

-Again, do your research. If you don't know what kind of riding you're going to do, buy adv instead of dual sport. Pick naked over sportbike. Find out what you like, then walk straight the fuck out of there. Download cycle-trader so you can check every dealership in the area, look up the bike's individual forum (e.g. http://www.cbr500riders.com), sleep on it, then buy.

Gear and shit can be collected and improved over time. Getting the wrong first bike can drive you away from the whole hobby without reason.

Sweet! I've got a little time to do the rest, too.
2: Scour local dealerships and gear shops for closeout helmets. Cycle gear is the real meme...
3. I personally rode my shit-scooter around a parking lot across from my apartment for a month. Then put the scooter in shop for road-worthiness, took 2 day course.
Everything after is personal preference, but I'd emphasize slow speed control (parking lot) and high speed calm-ness (freeway). Going out during peak hours is foolish, at first. So is wet weather.
(Although, in theory you'd benefit from one dry training day, one wet...)
4: Dipshits have trouble with using the gearbox. Find the friction zone, and it's just like inching your car forward <5mph.
Beyond that, you ride completely by feeling, and the bicycle just shows you how countersteering is supposed to work. Don't be street Rossi. Take your time and build a new, heightened sense of inertia.

Haven't done it since I bought the bike in February, but I also haven't been riding enough to warrant a change by now. The bike was tuned up by the guy I bought it from, but saying that now makes me realize that I should've just done it anyway even as early as right after I got the bike.

Regardless, would the need for an oil change cause a low oil pressure condition? I would think it would have to have been ages for that to happen

I'm looking at selling my current bike to get a new one, how many cents on the dollars do you guys use for the value of your modifications/farkles? Like, if I had a pannier set that cost $1000 brand new, how much should I factor into the asking price of the bike? $100? $500? $1000? Something else?

Alright, that seems fair. I've got an FJR1300 with the following extras (and their approx. price when new):

>Touring windshield $150
>McCruise electronic cruise control $1100
>Givi top case + rack $500
>Powder coated soft luggage rack $400
>Crash bars $200
>Mirror extenders $50
>Throttle tamer $50
>Saddle bag liners $??? 100??
>Frame sliders $100
>Ram mounts $50
>Headlight protectors $100

Total of $2800 if my math is right.
So you're saying that adding $1300-$1500 based on modifications would be about right?

Also what's the deal with shop manuals and maintenance records? Are they worth anything or do they just make for an easier sale?

There will be a ridge at the highest point that the ring travels, that's normal and won't hurt anything. If there is a groove in the swept area, you can try honing the cylinder, but if you end up with too much piston to cylinder clearance then you need to buy an oversized piston and have the cylinder bored to match. You need to do all the cylinders at once if you have more than one.

That's if you have iron cylinder liners. If the cylinder is plated, you send it to be re-plated. You mic the pistons and replace them if they are warn out of spec. Again, if you have a PLATED cylinder you don't hone or bore.

What bike?

91? It's iron liners.

The allowed clearances, sizes, etc are in the shop manual. to check it requires a miocrometer and a bore guage and some skill...

If it were me, I'd buy a cheap hone from the local auto parts store, see if I could hone the groove out, put it back together and start it and if the piston isn't slapping than hazzah!

If that doesn't work, it's either a set of pistons and a trip to the machine shop, or a check on ebay or the breakers to see if a good cylinder block with pistons can be had.

Good luck.

I've not just searched online but spoken directly to local dealerships, the DMV, and repair shops hoping for something. The absolute closest one is 100 miles for a sketchy place, 120 for one that overbooks and is still sketchy but at least gets you a DMV waiver, or ~150-200 for an actual MSF course.

Tasmania in the summer, yes GOAT
Just about the rest of Australia in the winter doesn't get the ice though.
I drove through almost all of Tasmania one year and the winter had some spooky moments in the mornings because I didn't expect the ice. My naked isn't too bad, but it has a lot of wind protection for a naked.
>>
>>17385117
It depends if the price reflects this.
I bought my bike at almost 42000mi and now I have almost 70000. I still haven't had it rebuilt or any significant work done or any failures, shit even the carbs haven't skipped a beat aside from needing a sync.
In my opinion that's a lot of riding for $3000. I still wouldn't regret buying it if it broke down tomorrow, I've put the bike through a lot of abuse but always done basic maintenance on time.

Maybe I just got lucky but most people seem to either directly cause their engine death, wreck it in a crash, or sell it after losing interest/wanting a different bike before it breaks down from age.

You could always get a quote from a paint shop to repaint the whole lot if it bothers you that much and tack on that cost. BYO decals, or not having them, will probably save you $100-200 too since dealers charge out the ass when shops buy them. Apparently.

>car
>needs to overcome a lot more weight

well if you've looked after it well no it should still be ok.

I have heard of R/R failures, gearbox failures, engines grenading from deferred valve checks, stuck thermostats, but never oil starvation. That's only for wheelie'd GSXRs. VFRs just have the usual old bike problems.

Engines don't magically wear down three times as fast as your 7k redline car engine if the lubrication system is designed to keep up with it running at those speeds. At the worst, the shared sump between the transmission and engine accelerates wear if you don't do your fucking oil changes.

Even then, bike engines are like three hundred bucks and can be lifted by hand if you're not a trap. Ezpz to replace. Not always worth it because if the engine is shot every bearing and seal elsewhere in the bike probably is too.
>>
>>17385536
nah VFRs had problems lubricating the cams.

its a common problem with older V4s though.
>>
>>17385539
