If I ever get a chance again to be buying a new bike, I'd go for an FZ-10 now that Ive got the experience on big boy bikes. I thought the FZ-10 was amazing but considering ive only ever rode a 250 beforehand, I didnt want to take the risk.

Bought an 09 with TCS to play it safe and still love it to death. I bet the FZ-10 is N+1 for fun.

I reported in dbt that I finished my MSF course. Recently I found a 390 duke on craigslist with just 1k miles and grabbed it and I can't believe how great fun this baiku is. Having a hard time leaving it alone, I've been practicing my riding in parking garages, lots, etc without people on the weekends.

Something about this is so much more free than a car. Even 35-40 mph feels so fast compared to anything I've ever done in a competent car. The feeling of wind, the acceleration, the weight of the forces during a lean, I love it all.

I used to ignore these threads, but now I've seen the light. I love my baiku and I love my new hobby.

I've anecdotically noticed the opposite on several occasions in the past, most recently when an Arizonan said he'd pay out the ass for insurance on a new Ducati or something, and I ran the insurance calculator on the model and it came out with a MUCH lower quote for me here in Germany, and probably with better coverage too.

You should keep it as a secondary bike.
>>
>>17356363
They seem to be matched to the bike and the bags in such a way as to optimise teh extraction of cash from your wallet.

But srsly, the frame is made for the bike, with "universal fit" versions that will work with mostly cruisers. All they have to do is keep a soft bag from getting cought in the spokes
>>
>>17356561
>They seem to be matched to the bike
I'm smart enough to deduct this much, but are the panniers matched to the racks?

>All they have to do is keep a soft bag from getting cought in the spokes

Two dudes didn't pass when I took it. One couldn't wrap his head around doing more than one thing at once and couldn't ride within the cones to save his life. The other was an obvious hazard to himself and everyone on the roads. The instructors had to tell him to slow down and redo almost all of the drills. They even gave him a warning about excessive speed, but the dickhole kept at it.

Every single drill:

>takes off and redlines first gear
>hard clunk into 2nd
>bike unsettles from the whole-body jerk of him clutching and ripping WOT into 2nd
>dude would put his whole shoulder into the throttle
>completely crossed-up hang-off in every corner on a V Star 250
>50/50 on whether or not he would stay in the cones at those speeds
>almost binned the bike several times, even after being told to slow the fuck down or leave
>every time he took off, the whole class was waiting for him to earthsurf
>some people began videoing him, just in case
>instructors not-so-secretly wishing the same thing
>he was sternly told not to come back for the second day in front of the whole class

If he could have just calmed his titties for 7 hours over two days, he could have been legally riding. Like if they have to pay to use the name why does it justify the cost to them and not others?
>>
>>17356688
no, people want motogp replica bikes. that is it. if honda motogp bikes had nothing but the shit emoji all over them people would still buy them. respol pay honda to put their logo on their bikes to get eyes on the brand and because they know people will buy bikes with their brand on it serving as mobile billboards.

In your example people would be buying tee shirt for the honda brand and the brand alone.

No one gives a fuck about respol.

riding a smaller bike is actually more dangerous, just say you have a car about to rear end you but you have time to accelerate away only your bike is not powerful enough to do so.

Depends on where you live. I used to be a HUGE proponent of a ninja 250 or similar except in extreme cases. They I moved to Colorado where the highways are concrete and the speed limits are 75 in many places. My girlfirend's Ninja 250 is NOT suited for these conditions.

Well it is what happens, you wouldn't go out roo hunting with a .22 because it probably won't kill a roo.
>>
>>17357807
>Well it is what happens,
No, it doesn't. A bullet to the CNS is virtually guaranteed to be death.
>>
>>17357813
not with a .22 though.
why do you think they are more than they are?

whats next are you going to tell me a 20 pound recurve bow is sufficient for hunting too?
because a .22 has about as much power behind it as an arrow coming from a 20 pound recurve bow...
>>
>>17357755
I'll relieve you of this burden, anon

>>
>>17357822
Reality isn't a video game. Significant damage to the CNS will result in death regardless of what causes it. A .22 will kill a rabbit, a human, or anything else if the bullet strikes the brain 99.99% of the time.

The reason .22s are not used to everything is because you obviously cannot always guarantee a brain shot and small calibers like that do not have enough penetration to reach major blood vessels or blood bearing organs to cause death by bleed out, which is the far more likely result due to the much larger target area.

when I make phone calls I type up everything I want to say first, so that I don't spaghetti and forget something or leave the wrong number on an answering machine etc.

I have no friends to help me inspect used bikes, and no friend bikes to practice inspecting on, so I'm writing up my own checklist assembled from the many checklist articles/blogs/videos on the web. I'm not quite done but it has ~150 items on it. It's this long because where a video would say something like "check that all the dash indicators work", mine says
>both turn signals and both top green turn signal indicators work
>high beam and far right blue indicator work
>headlight flasher switch works
>far left green neutral indicator lights in N and no other gear (test ride)
>left button toggles through [odometer, trip A, trip B]
>clock readout bottom left
>coolant temperature readout bottom right
>key ON & engine OFF = oil symbol ON & red indicator ON
>engine ON = oil symbol OFF & red indicator OFF
>no blinking or solid "FI" readout
>no "CHEC" readout
>yellow fuel indicator lit 3 seconds when key turns ON, then turns off
>horn works
>bar killswitch kills engine if running & prevents starting if not running
>hazard ON & key ON/PARK = all 4 signals and dash indicators flash

I'm writing all this basic shit down because how am I supposed to memorize what is and isn't normal for a model I've never seen before and with a total of two afternoons riding experience in a parking lot in february?

Of course within a week of buying something and riding it consistently, 90% of the shit on my paper will be instinctual. But right now everything is book learning for me. No practical experience to hang memories on. I feel like a Chinese kid in the nineties who "learned" English in school and then moved to the US. His English SUCKS cause he's never used it. You learn English by speaking it with English speakers. You learn bikes by riding/fixing bikes. Fuck.
>>
>>17357831
The fact is though a .22 often is not powerful enough to hit the brain, the bullets bounces off the skulls of small animals for christs sake.
might knock them the fuck out but they still get back up.
>>
>>17357851
>the bullets bounces off the skulls of small animals for christs sake.
no, it does not
>>
>>17357856
Not if you hit them square, but that's not always the case. Shoot a deer in the forehead with a .22 and it'll bounce up.
>>
>>17357862
And the same thing could happen with many calibers with an extremely acute angle of attack.

Standard FBI spec 10% ballistic gel tests of .22 prove that .22 has more than enough penetration to go through a skull as compared to other calibers.
>>
>>17357869
>ballistic gel is a good test of the human skull
no.
>>
>>17357890
FBI spec 10% ballistic gel tests are used as a standardized test for the testing of penetration and expansion of projectiles, like a wind tunnel for planes or cars.

If one bullet achieves 12" of penetration and another 13" it gives you a reference of their relative performance.

If you are a stone age fudd who insists on shooting meat in your backyard google is your friend.

What about your dad? I knew piss all about engines when I was buying my bike, I just read the guide on clarity. I'm a social anxious fuck though so it was helpful having my dad because your judgement can get clouded when in unfamiliar territory and you just want to buy a bike and be done with it.
>no friend bikes to practice inspecting on
You probably won't buy the first bike you go to check out as most people on CL are idiots. Watch some videos on youtube, look for vids of people doing repairs related to the problems you're looking for. Bring your checklist.

Used bikes are a gamble, I searched for months and ended up buying the 2nd bike I checked out.
>Research the model online for common issues and reliability
>Look up the prices of replacement parts for certain things to negotiate price
>Make sure the bike is registered with valid inspection
>Have seller cold start it then test ride or have him ride it

I like the DRZ but Ive heard they're like, unfixably horrible for riding on pavement for any length of time.

I'm vaguely aware of the DR but I'm nervous about aftermarket and availability of parts. KLR is far more common it seems.

figure on a 650r that if the bike is in good shape youll probably want to budget out for a new rod, piston and have cylinder replated.
i say this because when the big end of the rod gets out of spec itll run just fine but eventuially itll eat the thrust washers and then the whole thing goes to shit real fast.

So the sticky information suggests that for a first bike you don't buy anything older than a decade. Why is that?

its completely fine, a good commuter that can also handle some offroad.

the dr and drz are both designed as dirt bikes that can handle street, the dr more street, and the drz more dirt

for most people the difference between the two is fairly negligible if comparing a similar year. obviously a 2016 drz with 3x3+jet+pipe is going to be different than a bone stock '07dr650

older the bike more things you will have to replace. also the convenience of having electric start compared to carbs. if you find a good bike thats 20 years old, just keep in mind that its 20 fucking years old so the cables and electronics could shit out on you after you ride away

So the consensus seems to be that it's not NECESSARILY a bad idea. I'm concerned it might be a little too powerful for me... I've only ever ridden the 250cc I used during the MSF course. Anything I should know when I go to test ride it?

>>
>>17358580
My first bike was a 1981 XS400, it spent a good amount of time laid up waiting for parts, which sucked since its only really feasible to ride from April through November so working on the bike ate a of my spring time I could have spent riding.

Since I literally put the bike together I had a little trouble grappling with whether I was doing something wrong with riding or if the bike wasn't right.

For example my first time on the highway I was getting speed wobbles and assumed it was the tire balance or rear wheel alignment when it was simply me gripping the bars too tight.

I'd say avoid anything with Carbs and Drums for your first bike.

If I had to do it all over again I would have plunked down the extra thousand or so for a newer Ninja 250.
>>
>>17358636
Solid advice. I appreciate it. I just don't have the extra thousand or so... :c

get it into 3rd gear at least, go in a circle, test all the lights, after doing a test ride let it sit for a few minutes while you talk about football or whatever, look for any leaks. look at his garage for oil spots, ask about motorcycle shit to see if he knows what he is doing or if he just never repairs anything

>>17358659
same with any other bike. pull the clutch in, ease it out to find the sticking point. dont give any throttle yet, but coast a few feet with just the clutch. afterwards pull it in, and do the same thing with a little throttle, then slowly shift through the gears. if you are getting to 2nd/3rd gear with barely moving your wrist, then just be careful. there are so many factors that go into throttle response, toss in two decades and who the fuck knows. a 1200cc cruiser from the '80s and from '17 are two completely different beasts.

be smart, think about your actions as you do them, and ask yourself if you are willing to give more throttle than you need just to test it out before getting to know it. take it easy at first, but see how it handles when you give it a little juice. you might as well know how the bike functions before slapping your hard-earned goy bucks into some retards mitts.

Blog post incoming...

CM250C bro survived his first big adventure. 440mi round trip through treacherous winds, loose shale roads, the path of a tornado (not related to the previously mentioned winds) and some lovely hail.

The wind going down south was insane. Normally I can cruise around 55-60, and can push it to 70 if I want to be daring. I had to just sit at WOT in 4th gear most the whole trip south to keep it at 55. Mileage went from 53-59 mpg typical to 44 mpg. It was amazing to pass through a section with trees on the sides and just watch the speedo start climbing.

And at the end of the trip, Mistress Google decided 'hey, you must be bored of these nice paved roads, let me redirect you onto this soft packed shale shit that you have to traverse at 10mph while shitting your pants every 3 feet'. The hard packed gravel was no problem, but shit there was some nasty stuff out there. Someone else in the group had issues in it with their truck. WTF?

On the way back, ended up going through Litchberg about 3 hours after a tornado hit. Ended up having to play road crew and help clear limbs to get around on some of the back roads I was taking. And got to drive on the shoulder to make clearance for a Bobcat dragging what appeared to be the roof of a barn down the highway.

And got back to the Mpls area just after the storms dumped enough hail that it was clogging up the storm drains and they had the snow plows out to clear it.

>>
>>17358646
Carbs need to be kept CLEAN, your first time cleaning a carb you WILL do it 3 times.

More carbs = cleaning.

Drum brakes are just all around poor quality, they don't give you much confidence, also much harder to work with than pads and rotors if you do your own work. The only "nice" thing is most bike drum brakes are simple cable operated, which means no bleeding. BUT it does mean lubing the cable frequently.

A pad change on my FZR600 takes maybe 15 minutes start to finish, on the XS400 I have to pull the wheel.

I still say for a beginner a newer bike with easier to work on parts is far better than a cheaper older bike. Most of what you "save" buying an old bike you lose in parts and down time.
