what are the best sport touring bikes to look for on craigslist? i saw somebody talking about them a couple days ago; saying they didnt know why more younger people werent buying them.

i might be looking into them for my next bike.
>>
>>17353137
Pretty much any, sport touring bikes are very reliable, usually owned by responsible owners, and hold their value like a pile of shit. So for $3k you can get a concours, FJ, or VFR with 30k+ miles that's in great shape.

I went to Honda Demo Day today...

Rode an Africa Twin...

Liked mostly everything about it except the power... they fucking map it so damn lean it backfires sometimes when you blip the throttle and nearly died on me.

The poor thing is starving for fuel... it was breaking up under WOT a bit... definitely could gain a few HP easily with a re-map.
>>
>>17353194
VMAX, diavel, rocket III, I guess scout if you're one of those fags who needs it to be American. Also if you're tall and looking for a sport bike try the Daytona, it's pretty tall.

>>17353201
There are different kinds of sport touring bikes, you're thinking if the big fully faired ones, but stuff like the FZ-6, FJ-09, or DL650 are still sport tourers, just a bit more sport than tourer.

>>
>>17353242
Power's nice lots of torque, I don't like the seating position but I like sport bikes so that's a personal thing, handling is fine for what it is. The only real problem is the brakes, it's a 600 lb bike with over 100 HP and one fucking front disc, also the tach is digital so you can never really tell what RPM you're at.
>>
>>17353250
Just get a motard. It's like a grom, but less meme and more function. They are neat, but other than that, I just don't get the appeal.

>>
>>17353324
That's wrong.
The CB750 is /the/ quintessential cafe base, and that's because it was the first inline four that handled worth a shit, that's why it's famous.
>>
>>17353279
is it spec? There should be a vid on the tubes on how to adjust it.

unrelated, has anyone ridden a 1250 bandit? Is it as heavy as it appears on paper?
>>
>>17353255
Is that really the way it is? Harleys are expensive as fuck man, even living in Harley's home turf they're expensive.

>>17353262
Hmm. I'll add it to to my list. I just want a decently constructed bike for comfy riding. I wouldn't be going too far with it either, an hour ride away would likely be the max.
>>
>>17353336
A period Norton handled better and was lighter. The Honda just had some power and reliable
>>
>>17353342
Meh, you can get an Evo road King or wide glide for 5k in good condition. Not all Harleys are created equallt, the softail chassis doesn't have enough ground clearance in my opinion.

I mean a shadow 1100 or vtx is a great bike, but if im getting another cruiser I'll get the real thing
>>
Just started riding with my girlfriend on the back. Its a good feel. I mean riding is one of the highlights of every week in the summer but having a girl squeeze you around a bend is close to heaven.
>>
>>17353367
>Every week
>In the summer
What the fuck dude
>>
>>17353336
It may have been the first i4 to handle better than a semi truck, but it still couldn't hold a candle to a Norton or Guzzi of the time period.
>>
>>17353336
CB750s don't handle as well as their contemporaries. Their fame and dominance as a superbike of the period came from the excellent engine which didn't leak oil and could be ridden as a daily driver. The handling was always adequate, not superior.
>>
>>17353367
>every week
Why not ride more often then? The only reason i have not been on my bike during any day this summer has been because of rain
Also post gf
>>
>>17353365
I think I see what you mean. I wouldn't mind a Harley, but if at all possible I'd get something else. A Harley is an older man's bike. Even Dad thinks so. He used to ride Hondas and Kawasakis when he was younger.
>>
>>17353420
I get that. That's why I bought the Yamaha. How tall are you? Sportsters are pretty fun and their Evo motor is the best engine Harleys made in the last few decades.
>>
>>17353378
>>17353417
Its a generalization. I work a lot and out of town so it doesnt always happen through the week. Plus a one hour one way commute on straight roads just isnt fun after 10 hours of construction.

They're either pussies or 6'4"+ I've done 4-500 mile days on my Daytona plenty of times, would I say it's comfortable or a perfect touring bike? No, but it's more than doable especially considering you only get about 120-150 miles out of a tank so you can stretch your legs every two hours. And that's for a fully hunched over supersport, something like a naked or standard would fit fine.

POS 97 zx6
finally got my fuel pump in
going to install the fucker tomorrow
if it doesnt make the bike run, I'm gonna fucking scream.

Never really got a 100% for sure answer last time I posted this: but whats the worst that could happen is I hot wire the pump?

>>
>>17353694

>>
>>17353689
It'll run at whatever% load you've wired for it at all times.

It should prime when you turn the key to on before starting the engine, but if you want to hotwire it make sure there's a fuse in the line.
>>
>>17353713
id wire it to the battery, wire in a fuse, then put in a toggle switch to be able to turn on/off the pump.
the pump im putting on does about 2.5psi max and my bike wants about 2.3psi

that should cause a problem should it?

The old pump doesnt turn on or prime when I turn the key. Ive got a new fuel pump relay, chased all my wires and have continuity. The bike will run off starter fluid.

Everything SEEMS like it should work but for some reason im getting no power to the fuel pump/the fuel pump isnt doing anything with the power.

Ive done a bunch of testing, and I've posted here a million times because I'm a cuck and too broke for a shop, and if the pump doesnt fix it tomorrow, idk what im gonna do
>>
>>17353726
that shouldn't* cause a problem should it?

Mate I'm 6'2 and I've owned cruisers, trail, and sports bikes. The comfiest thing I've owned and still do, is a gsxr750. I ride it 5+ hours non stop in the weekends and the only discomfort is the seat after 4 hours. I originally rode cruisers thinking I had to due to my height. Even had one with highway pegs and raised t bars, still prefer sports bikes over them. Don't get cucked into buying a heavy, underpowered, bad ergo, terrible leaning POS because of your height.

keep an eye on the speedo, there's a minimum speed required for some sections and you get docked points if you go too slow (they just measure the time you take to complete the exercise). You might need to be quicker than you think.

Speaking of msf test, i had a pretty bad spaghetti moment doing mine a few months ago.
Doing the emergency swerve and stop testing, i was near the end of the line and once you do your emergency brake you loop around to the back of the line for the emergency turn. For the stop the chick just blew a whistle once you entered a box and you had to stop before the line of cones, for the turn a guy would stand at that line and point right or left once you got close to him. When i was up the guy walked to the line but i figured he was just getting ready for the people behind me, but when i was riding through listening for whistle he pointed to the side so i went o fuck and did thenswerve anyways. Then they got me to do it again and do the stop this time cause they messed up, but as i was going through the box i never head the whistle and had to do the swerve again because i ended up being like feet from the cone line still cruising. Turn out the instructor chick forgot to blow the whistle. I thought that i was autistic and misheard what they told me to do though so i was shitting myself. They got it right the next time and i scored perfect but i felt absolutly retarded having to redo it 3 times

Actual law enforcement arrests were done by mob until after the civil war. Because they're human hunters, not investigators, the police culture is hostile about everything.
You can still find the influence most clearly in America's handling of the homeless and riots. The pervasive racism is 20% history, 10% society, 70% recruitment demographics. (Before someone bitches about "baiting")

e.g. The Seattle PD had a DOJ review last year. The study found they had fixed the "race problem" by beating the dog-shit out of EVERYONE instead.
Also, they don't teach de-escalation.

Night rides are fucking godlike.
I had an hour ride home at 2am after hanging with some friends. I had smoked a lot earlier so I waited a lil before riding, then I put on some music and cruised down the highway through the night and got in a comfy position on my bike. I've never been more at peace. When I parked my bike at home the smell of hot oil and warm gasoline wafted to my nose; bliss.
Riding is a beautiful thing when there aren't other cars around. Makes me wanna go Easy Rider.

I went on the funnest ride in a long time last night. Made some discoveries about body position which I knew in theory, but which only "clicked" on that ride. Went through fast bends a good 10-20 km/h faster than before, at around 150-180% of the recommended speed, with enough reserve in lean angle to go even faster.
Best 2 hours in a long time.

It was very basic shit too, like "mid-corner, don't press against the handlebars".

The ER-6N (european naked Ninja 650R) was less than a year old and felt terrible in the corners, especially during trailbraking towards the apex or accelerating away. The SV650 was a dealer's test ride bike and felt similar. My S2R 800 is what is actually 10 years old, and feels way superior to both.

Price isn't really problem. Regardless, at that time the S2R was around 8000-8500€ compared to the 6000-6500€ that mid-sized Japanese nakeds cost.
>>
>>17354571
so get a Japanese high or mid range naked? pretty sure the MT9, Z900 or GSX750 got adjustable suspension.

or just get a budget bike and upgrade the suspension, you can get aftermarket shocks, springs and entire forks after all.

Would cost about as much as the base bike probably though.
>>

then why look at budget bikes?
>>
>>17354571
Then get one of the Aprilia's or upgrade a Jap bike, really your only 2 options
>>
>>17354515
Not exactly. Keep in mind that everyone discontinued a fucking asston of bikes in Europe and Japan for the 2017 model year because they couldn't replace enough of their model lineup in time for Euro4. At the time of discontinuation they said there wouldn't be a replacement but they haven't outright said there never will be.

It's more interesting because the Japanese have jumped on it and there it would be the best JDM 600 ever by a wide margin, but they have been horribly wrong before as well. But they've also been pushing the rumour Kawasaki will make an I4 250 since 2014 and that sure hasn't amounted to anything yet. (still a rumour they'll make a new Ninja 250/300 then an I4 to take on the CBR250RR though, but people seem to think that's retarded from an emissions and noise standpoint)
>>
>>17354586
>emissions and noise standpoint

Dude are you actually retarded? Those bikes were always made for the Japanese market and the Japanese noise regulations in particular have always been the most strict.

It's probably why we have so many cocksucking middleweight twins now though.
>>

I'm looking for a "Japanese" (or of similar maintenance interval/low maintenance, shimming the desmo sucks), sport naked of medium displacement. Price isn't an issue, but medium displacement (navigating around stuck cages with a liter bike with clipons is not fun) and lack of fairings for easy communing in the city is required. Not everyone is a weekend rider with a free-flowing "Gixxer" sitting in his suburban garage.

skip over "so you want to get a sportbike?" entirely and just git gud like everyone else - by fucking around at relatively low speeds with a bike you don't care about crashing. the only beginner bike tip of merit is to make sure it's light enough for you to tip most of the way over and then make upright again.

I just bought a bike to learn to wrench on, despite having been a rider for 15 years.
How and what do I restore a bike with?
Is there any recommendations you guys can give me for:
>cleaning chrome
>replacing brake fluid
>making clutch cables not feel like 100lbs
>making the front brake engage well before the last 1/4"
>making the engine exterior not look 100 years old.

Basically just trying to figure out how to make the bike look new again.
>>
>>17355265
use naval jelly for the chrome then polish
use whatever brake fluid is specced out on the MC and just flush with the same, you can exercise the calipers to help push old shit out too
new clutch cable to get it back to being as smooth and light as it will be
check the caliper for free movement on the floating pins and check the rotor for warps
cleaner wax and elbow grease

brillo pad and wd40 and engine degreaser depending on whats on it

Im in the same boat, at 6'3 I cant ride any sporybike for longer than a couple hours. Nekkeds are mostly ok though, I can ride my fz09 all day.

If you're set on a cruiser, get a victory -
they are dirt cheap now. If I had the spare cash kicking I would add an 8 ball to the stable.

Ancient mechanic here. I'd do it. There's no reason for it to cause a problem. Use a blade fuse, not glass garbage, and I prefer blade type circuit breakers to fuses.

I'd throw a 20 amp breaker in the thing and call it good. Use a decent toggle, preferably waterproof, but you can dummy up anything that will work for the time being.

I prefer heat shrink and bare crimp connectors to the heavy plastic sleeved shit at most auto stores, but I use those when I accumulate them by holding the copper lug with visegrips, heating the sleeve (heat gun or cigarette lighter) and pulling the sleeve off which is quick and easy.

Browse Ebay for "non-insulated terminals" and heat shrink. I buy bulk heat shrink for stoopid cheap. (Sellers get bulk rolls at auction then cut to suit).

If you build a wiring kit early on you will be happy for years. Most noobs fail to do that but it's cheap and easy.
>>
>>17355265
Go to brand and model specific forums and start reading. You are wise to learn to wrench. Get a factory service manual or download it (many forums have links).

Fuel system and brake maintenance is easy to learn. Read first and take your time.

When bleeding front brakes remember air rises and you can bleed brakes from any fitting including the one at the master cylinder. Place towel under master when bleeding to protect paint.

Inspect clutch cable for damage at lever end. Any broken strands or serious corrosion means new cable.

Now go explore forums and find good ones for your purpose. Google the fuck out of everything then sort by sanity. Jewtoob videos can be useful BUT sanity check with service manual because vidyas aren't tech data.

Replace all fluids. Have fun. You are doing what every rider should have a crack at and that's the fucking way to learn to wrench.

Remember YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL because people cannot help you if they must waterboard you to get information. It doesn't matter if you think it's relevant, post it anyway at least in real motorcycle forums.

Why? Because (with relevance to your post) different engines have different surface finishes, different brakes require different techniques (plain vs. ABS, dual vs single disc, vacuum bleed vs. pump bleed) etc.

Details help you think in detail too.

Used VMAX or large Honda V-twin. Test ride them. Also consider Honda Valkyries. Great long distance bikes. Many of my Harleybros went with Valks and like them.

Ignore Shovelhead posters. I like mine but if you are not an EXPERIENCED mechanic you don't need one. Only independent shop mechanics service them and the Shovel generation are old or dead. I'm old.

Indian and Polaris make/made good machines but you need to fucking research Indian or Polaris forums and this isn't one. Always do thorough research before going shopping.

How can you tell some callipers are more expensive than others? Is it the drill pattern?

for us the instructor said in the practice runs, we should try the figure 8 box in both first and second to see which one was easier for us, and then do that one for the exam. it was split pretty even among the people i asked afterwards.

I've seen a bunch of videos saying that I must tightened my legs with the bike.
I'm sure it's a good idea but I'm a beginner and executing it is very tiring, both mentally (I need to think about it all the time or else I just loosen up) and physically.
Is it something that you get used to? How many hours did you need to master this? Is it muscle memory? Or something that you must think about all the time?

It's tiring obviously, you're using muscles for an extended time that are usually relaxed. You get used to it. Make sure your body position is correct. What helped me is making sure my feet are positioned correctly, and focusing more on keeping my ankles close to the bike rather than the knees; your legs should grip the tank on their own then.
But yeah, for a complete noob it's something you need to think about, you get used to it.

>wonder idly what those "remove before flight" keychains mean
>an hour later realize i'm listening to flight recordings of crashes
dammit

also is it gay to have one of those keychains if you're not a pilot or flight mechanic or involved with aviation in some way? If it means anything, I've hopped the pond dozens of times, and I was 14 the first time I did it without an adult with me.
