What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little scooter? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in driving school, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Nandos, and I have over 300 confirmed Wheelies. I am trained in basic wrenching and I’m the top thug in all the SA bike gangs. You are nothing to me but just another displacelet. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on BMWs, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of tripfags across the board and your bike is being traced right now so you better prepare for the Strom, maggot. The V-Strom that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your bakiu. You’re fucking dead, anon. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can hoon in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my touring tires. Not only am I extensively trained in squding, but I have access to the entire arsenal of my toolbox and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of /o/, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit cheap oil all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, anon.

>>17297459
The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

On a carbed bike, should I turn the fuel petcock to OFF everytime I stop the bike? Or only if its going to be parked for more than a pair of days?
Should I turn it OFF overnight?

You should turn it to ON, drain the tank, have it wrecked and buy an actual motorcycle instead of a scooter from the 80s.

The gaskets on the final drive are made of paper. I bought 20 from Russia for $18 shipped.
Mine leaked when I first got the bike because the previous owner had replaced them but didn't tighten the bolts enough, and the gaskets were able to wriggle loose and tear.

It's about a half hour job to replace it.
I've gone 2000km on mine since I did it with no leaks.

Can't think of any other paper gaskets onboard.
Pic is my leaky final drive.

The left side, yes. The right side, the cylinder is almost butted up against the sidecar. Plus you have nowhere to work.

Oil is pretty frequent, i think every 1500-2000km which is like 1000 miles. Also there are three separate oil changes that need to be done: engine, gearbox and final drive.
I've only put 3500km on the bike.
I keep using km because that's what the odometer uses..

More cylinders make more revs which make more HP and top speed. The GS500 is as slow as a fat ass KLR. Thats my point, it`s shit.

Harleys are shit, I don`t know what the fastest Harley is but I doubt it would be better than my DL-1000 which is a V-Twin and Harleys are mainly V-Twins.

the only downside is when you have to resell it, you'll lose a bit of money, appart from that, it's great.
Maintenance every 6000km, parts are NOT especially expensive tho, the new RSV4 are pretty reliable.
Good choice mate.
>>
>>17297870
Higher number of cylinders means smaller cylinders and valves, which means those components can be smaller and thus have less inertia, leading to engines that rev faster and higher. However, not all engines have weight-reduced components, especially the budget ones. Naked bikes, tourers etc are usually not set up for maximum power delivery, but rather a linear power delivery (resulting from near constant torque across the rev range) do be more usable in different scenarios (city traffic in particular). Longevity is something that needs to be taken into account, if you remove a lot of material from components they might become less stiff and wear off faster which isn't desirable for a bike you might want to DD. Valve timing, position, shape and size play a significant role in engine characteristics.
>>
>buy scissor lift
>requires 22mm socket
>my set maxes at 21mm
>>
>>17297885
Also inertia from rotational mass's distance (translating to speed here) from center (crankshaft) a v twin has a much longer stroke, leading to more inertia and higher acceleration of the mass. Engines with smaller strokes will not have the same force from acceleration, as they don't have to cover the same distance in one rotation of the crankshaft. So it can rev higher, with the same force and speed.
>>
>>17297891
I understand what you saying, mostly, but cylinders offer a much quick way to get speed than shaving engines and making them out of light materials.

No matter what you could ever do to a KLR 650 engine upto and including Turbos could you ever get it as fast as a CBR600r. Even if you built the fastest Thumper in the world it would still be slower. The piston can only move so fast to make power. More pistons means more of the work is shared out mean more power at high rpms. I doubt a CBR600r could ride as slow as my KLR without stalling depending on gears and rpm.
>>
>>17297747
are they actually visible? chinese turn signals tend to be really low quality LEDs you can't even see from 10ft away in daylight unless you're looking closely for them
>>
>>17297936
Are you literally brain-damaged?
Yes, engines with more cylinders TEND TO be revvier and the bikes are OFTEN faster than those with fewer cylinders.
What I'm saying is that the engine configuration is only one of many factors contributing to the motorcycle's top speed and acceleration (two very different things), and it is conceivable to have a thumper that out-drags and out-runs an i4.
>>
>>17297733
>a dual sport is faster than a street bike in a quarter mile
it's pathetic really
>>17297757
More power means better acceleration, not more tork.
>>
>>17297944
More like it could be the most important factor. If you had said as light and fast two stroke might beat a heavy big displacement 4 stroke on a pull off situation, I might have gone with it. But there are no materials available today that could let a Thumper Match any 4cyl, saying anything else is retarded.
>>
>>17297629
What a pretty bike
>>
>>17297747
How long did they take to get to you? I want to get rid of my ugly FZ8 ones.
>>
>>17297959
Have you ever seen a 500cc two stroke thumper with a turbo? It sure as fuck will out run your sportbike. Give it fairings and will probably reach higher speeds too. Power isn't necessarily limited by engine configuration. But there is pros and cons to each.
>>
>>17297955
Power is torque integrated over RPM. Torque is the product of force times lever length. Engine torque is transformed using the gearbox and final drive gear ratios. The rear axle torque divided by your wheel radius is the force with which the bike is propelled forward. Force is mass times acceleration, i.e. more force = more acceleration.
Since for drag races, you're accelerating from a stop (RPMs are climbing instead of staying in the narrow power band the whole time), the torque at low RPMs must be taken into account, as an engine that only produces high torque at high RPMs will take ages to even get to that point.

>>17297959
Moto3 uses 250 cc single cylinder engines.
>>
>>17297955
>More power means better acceleration, not more tork.
But more torque=power, literally. It's part of the function.

Yes more torque means more power as long as it's not at a lower RPM. In a drag race you spend practically no time in the low revs. You ride the clutch until you're up into the meat of the power in first gear then you continue shifting to stay in the power throughout the rest of the gears. Anon was saying it as if having more torque will make you win a drag race even if you make less overall power.

>1982 Honda GL1100 Gold Wing

Goldwing
>>
>>17298435
I've always loved the nighthawks aesthetics, but which one do you ride more?
>>
>>17298435
Nighthawk is a budget bike

Goldwing is a proper bike
>>
>>17298454

They're both pretty recent additions so I'm still getting used to both, and the Nighthawk has had a few maintenance issues which have prevented it from being ridden much. It'll be back on the road this weekend though.

The nighthawk is quite a bit lighter, and more exciting to ride despite not really being faster. It also sounds better. On the other hand, it's less comfortable, and more "buzzy" at sustained highway speeds.

>>17298443
>>17298460

Kind of how I'm leaning. It's a perfect touring bike, where the Nighthawk is definitely a "UJM". If I only had space for one, I'd probably keep the Nighthawk. I've got the XR for hooligan shit though, and I'll be adding a proper modern sport this Winter. The Nighthawk is cool, but not my favorite version of the CB750.
>>
I'm looking at an ad for a second hand bike made in 2002, which is quite old. It has driven about 25000 kilometers.
How judges /dbt/? Is this okay or should I buy a new one?
>>
>>17298349
drz has a vacuum petcock. when set to "on" it should not allow fuel flow when the engine is off but once the engine is running it should open up and let fuel flow. Do you have the little tiny hose on the back of the petcock connected?
>>
>>17298435
I'd keep the Gold Wing. It's a bit of an oddity. The Nighthawk is, frankly speaking and despite admittedly being a classic, just another straight four naked bike.

But really you've ridden both and deep inside you already know which one's more fun and which one you want to keep.
>>
>>17298499

2002 is isn't "old" for a bike.

In fact, age has little to do with anything besides what technologies and design methodologies will likely be represented.

Condition, maintenance history, and mileage are your indicators.

25,000km could be a lot or not much, all depends on the bike and how it's been treated. And, of course, how much the price is.
>>
>>17298435
sell the tw and nighthawk

25,000km in 15 years means it wasnt really ridden much so it was probably well looked after.

>>17298499
That's not old for any vehicle. 80s/early 90s is old.

Just make sure it has pictures all around, no hidden sides, and bring someone who knows their shit to look at it. Any signs of deferred maintenance, any deep scratched/parts ground down = walk away, forget it, it doesn't matter how much you like it, something else is wrong.

How to downshift while in high rpm?

Is it bad to have your clutch slow you down as you downshift?
>>
>>17298594

Ease off the throttle.

Pull in the clutch.

Downshift.

As you start letting the clutch out, use the throttle to match the RPMs the bike wants to be at. It's ok for a little slowing to be happening here, you just don't want to dump all that stress on the clutch at once.

Once your clutch is fully out, engine brake / brake as normal.
>>
>>17298594
Engine braking is fine as long as you control it. You don't want to exceed max RPMs on the engine, and you don't to risk locking up the rear wheel by downshifting too far. Also remember to at least nudge the brakes far enough for your brake light to come on, otherwise people behind may not notice you slowing down until too late.

Bought the CBR for $2k then spent about another $500 fixing little shit.
Bought the CBR for $1800 then spent about another $2k fixing shit and improving things.
Bought the KLX for $2700 then spent probably another $800 or so fixing little things.

So my cheapest purchase turned into the most expensive one over time. Lesson learned.

Because fuck you if I'm keeping the Goldwing I'm going to put a cup holder on it and there's nothing you can do to stop me.

Even if I have to use a bendy straw to drink from it with my helmet on.

This bike even conveniently has the headers slightly lower than the bottom of the fairing so I can put it on there without undressing it.

Thought it would be those styrofoam boxes you also use for doggy bags.

I still gotta take a pic in my Batman onsie on the chief lol.

So far I've heard they're gonna be working on getting a new album out so no gwarbq this year. My gf was a lil bummed about that. She loved it last year. But they will be on warp tour oddly enough.

I'll be in the UK in a few weeks, and if one of the Scotts offer me a munchie-box I'll smack him in the head for offending me.
>>
>>17299087
Absolutely nice, I'm guessing the fender is stock but the fairing isn't? It really compliments the overall look.
>>
a munchie box is a pizza box filled with assorted shit. usually chips, doner meat, chicken pakoras, onion bhajis.
if it's an upmarket establishment you might even get a few bits of kofte kebab.
and obviously the token salad and a tub of chilli sauce.

the only place to get a real one is the Clyde area so unless you are there you should give them a smack. Is there anyway to prevent your helmet from fogging up? Like is there some kind of stuff to put on it or does the fog eventually go away when riding or something? I ride with the visor up but now that bugs are waking up I need to start putting it down but it fucking sucks

>>17299222
Pinlock and a breath box

>>17299222
There are oils/coatings you can put on the inside of the shield to prevent it. I usually find that just cracking the shield open to the first catch is enough when stopped at lights. Can close it all the way on the move. My helmet has vents, but those are pretty standard these days, aren't they?

I was gonna report back with my experience from using my new Sena 10U.

I called my gf (mom) using normiebook and we talked while I rode home. Even riding at 80mph she didn't hear any wind or engine noise. And I ride a supermoto without a windshield.

With the visor up she could hear my engine at lower speeds.

Safe to say I am really impressed with the noise cancelling.

I do feel the helmet fits a bit tighter now in some areas, I might have to move around a bit on the cables that are tucked behind the comfort liner.

Anything from Wal-Mart. They're all the same
>>

my shoei gt air came with both a breath guard and a pinlock visor.

the pinlock prevents fogging and the breathguard catches your breath and directs it away from the visor.

most helmets have option to install these, but usually only high end models have them included at new.

I'm suspecting dirty carbs, they also need to be balanced. Any input?

apparently dandruff shampoo or some shaving creams have some anti-fogging properties if applied to a shield and buffed clear. I think FortNine mentioned it in a motorcycle lifehacks video, it was demoed and looked pretty good.
