Is raiden meme tier or is it decent? $390.

Also looking at Spidi h2out 4 season and 1st gear.

If I can't make up my mind I'm going KLIM but the badlands is decieiving. I've seen it fit like a garbage bag and I've seen it slim fit. I want gear that works but if I'm spending upwards of $1600 for pants and jacket I am not going to be happy if I look like a man in garbage bags.

Hey /dbt/ can you ease my concern on the following:

>don't ride bike for 2-3 months tops
>won't turn on
>remove battery and hook it up into a charger
>charging normally

I haven't had my battery discharge so fast... is this a sign it should be replaced soon or is something else wrong I need to worry about? I'm always paranoid about the carburetor since I don't ride as often as I should, but every mechanic I've been too said "you're carburetor is fine mate"

question, asethetics aside, does a proper cafe racer conversion significantly increase a bikes acceleration, or is it better to just buy a higher cc bike?

most cafe racers use pod filters and shitty exhaust which will instead reduce power

I don't know, with cars at some point I'd start thinking "yeah, this one's just like the other ones", but with bikes you always find a detail that sets it apart from others and makes it desirable, even if it's just the bloody paint scheme. Also large amounts of bikes in one place look so much cooler than large amounts of cars in one place, and they cost less and take up less space.

Cars can be fun, just most are super anti-fun and the ones that aren't are usually either expensive and/or unreliable.

>press gas
>wait for ECU to decide to exit fuel conservation mode
>wait for the automatic transmission to decide to downshift
>wait for the turbo to spool up
>woops because of this lack of throttle response you've smashed it wide open praying something will happen, better kick the traction control in to keep you from spinning the unloaded wheel to infinity with this front wheel drive and open diff

I honestly feel less safe driving these things because there's not enough to do to keep my attention.

When you get away from that stuff you're getting into sports cars with lots of practical compromises anyways and they are like 10-20 times the money for similar performance as a bike.

So I let my wife ride around a parking lot on my scout sixty today, she wants to ride now (never ridden before, taught her clutch control etc.). Thing is, she's 5'2" and 120lbs. So a 250 is in order, but which one? She likes cruisers, Honda rebel? Kawasaki kx 250? Who has one and what do you love/hate about it?

Rebel is fine--lots of MSF courses and similar use them, seat height is low, it looks like a cruiser, they're cheap as fug.

>>
>>17198453
>when should I use the throttle stop screw
never
use the idle screw to adjust idle.
the idle jet when you do a rejet anyways.
Before you change the internal parts of the carb, give it a good clean and set it up right.
>>
>>17198453
Idle jet controls a/f mixture for smooth idle, throttle stop controls closed throttle rpm to prevent stalling in neutral.

Hey /o/, first time visiting you guys.

I'm looking to get a bike but I dont really know where to begin. First I dont know whether the insurance would kill me (19 y.o. guy) so theres that, and should I get an older bike to save money or save up for a newer one? I prefer traditional style I guess, not racers or crotch rockets.

I know ill get a smaller, more beginner friendly motorcycle but I dont know which ones are good for me. I don't really fit on sportsters and I dont have anything other than a harley dealer by me. Looking on craigslist I see a 1986 yamaha maxim 750 that I can afford, how is it in size compared to a sportster? Also I cant really find anything about on the internet other than people seem to like them, anyone have any info on them?

The much worse alternative is a smaller market for aftermarket parts which keep the old Jap bikes going. Aftermarket parts customers are why most old riceburners are viable. Many of them got scrapped instead of salvaged because they weren't anything special new.

Reminds me of a time when me and two other bikes pulled up to a red robot. I don`t remember how it went down that we worked out it was going to be a race to the next light without speaking.

It was me on my DL-1000 versus an older Yamaha R1 versus some Fuck-Off Huge Harley Davidson. Predictably the cruiser wasn`t even in the running. What surprised me the most was that I was far on front of the R1 until about 90kph when he passed me, I kept up with him til about 140kph and after that I cound`t read his licence plate any more and considered it a loss.

All this came about from some reving at a red light.

Go to the xlforum and Chop Cult for useful info.

I strongly suggest UNsettling on an Ironhead because by the time you are done with it you could have bought a reliable solid mount later Evo Sportster and gotten in much more riding.

You can buy complete used Evo Sportster engines, running and from reliable sellers, cheaper than going through an Ironhead. All Ironheads are old as fuck and usually had uncaring owners. Expect to do at least a full top end job and that's if you are lucky. OTOH I just picked up a 1998 883 engine with 14K miles for 500 bucks locally.

Just buy a 90's/early 2000's dual sport. Cheap, reliable, and easy to work on.
Anywhere from 250-650cc is fine. 650's are heavier though so if you plan to do trails or anything, they're not as nimble. My DR350 is right around 300lbs, it's easier to pick up the rear and pivot the bike or get onto a stand.

6 speed 350cc is sex, maybe look for a DR350/XT350. Alternatives: KLR250, XR250, XT250, DRZ400, DR650, XR650L

>>17199014
so its not actually comfy.
>>
>>17199007
They're comfy if you have a good back and mage use of body positioning. The forward lean also makes it easy to stretch out to the passenger pegs and lay flat, highway pegs style. If you sit square on the seat all day, nah. But bikes made for that have their own unique set of discomforts. Bike comfy is never 100% comfy. The perfect bike doesn't exist.

The only truly uncomfortable road bikes are dual sports with tiny wood plank seats because you never actually use the seat on dirt (so really, they're just misplaced) and borderline recumbent cruisers when ridden over a sufficiently rough road.

>>
>>17199042
but my back is as good as ever, no one buys a sport bike for comfort, you get a touring or sport touring bike that allows your back to maintain a natural upright position and lets you effectively spread weight and move freely on the bike

Anyone ever used slime for a road bike tire?

Have a nail and wanted to seal it up without having to pull the tire and replace the tube.
>>
>>17199050
Maybe it's because I'm a manlet, but most sportbikes are fine
>>
>>17199051
its gonna make a massive mess of shit when you go to pull it apart and generally wont seal forever.
just change the tube or slap a patch on it
>>
>>17199051
>replace the tube.
what? what tires aren't tubeless these days?
>>
>>17199050
Crotch rocket is a term that existed long before race ergonomics were remotely common on street bikes.

Bicycle? Fold up and place a dollar bill between the tube and tire.

Anyways needless to say this would practically be considered a sport tourer these days
>>

this was my experience exactly, except we definitely were required to use 2nd gear for certain exercises and I made a point of getting into 3rd once or twice when I was able to without the instructor noticing (mostly on the way back to the parking area in between exercises). not sure how fast desu because unfamilar, old cloudy speedo.

I'm thinking the mess would be contained in the tube though right?

>>17199062
The kind that have tubes. Most bikes with spoke wheels.

>>17199070
No, talking about motorcycles.
This intrigues me though, what does a dollar bill do to a bicycle tube?
>>
>>17199051
Actually have yes, didn't work worth shit, but turned out the previous owner had fitted the wrong size tubes anyway.

Long story short; buy a bike that doesn't use inner tubes
>>
>>17199143
b-but i already have a bike that uses intertubes...

I know it has the right size tubes because I bought them.

Just want to get this bike back up and running and bros over at adv rider use slime on their bikes with seemingly good results.

The puncture isn't very big, I ordered a bottle just for shits and gigs.

Stuck riding my other bike for the time being. but if it gets a flat it's easy as piss to fix.
>>
>>17199152
What could possibly be easier than patching a tube?
>>
>>17199152
It probably has a fair shot at working, after I got mine out, they had massive cracks around it from where the rim had pinched it, so it never would have sealed.
>>
I feel a kick when I shift gear. I know the rubber thing in my rear wheel is old and loose, could that be it?
>>
>>17199183
Is your chain adjusted
>>
>>17199152
Dude. You're on 2 wheels. Why ride on 50% of them with a hole? That shit could stretch and blow out or some other catastrophe, the possibilities are endless. Just fix it correctly
>>
>>17199189
I'll look at it before taking off the rear wheel.
>>
>>17199138
Say you get a puncture through your tire and inner tube, fold up a dollar bill and place it between the inner tube and tire, fill it with air, and it holds. I saw it on a YouTube channel called "seths bike hacks". Awesome guy to watch if you're into mountain biking
>>
>>17197313
nah
>>
>>17199212
hm. i wonder if you'd get better results with a piece of latex or other rubber sheet of a reasonable thickness. at that point you'd basically be patching your tire but just without the adhesive step.

that actually sounds viable for quick flat fixes while road bicycling, especially if you rotate the tire a little bit so the holes don't match up. lot easier to carry a few pieces of latex than an extra tube.
>>
>>17199235
Yeah it was an emergency situation they did while road biking from Miami to the keys, there's latex patches and I don't think they were holding or didn't have any or something, but the dollar bill worked for another 100 miles or some crazy shit.
>>
>>17199183
>>17199204
Could well be, you'll feel some sort of backlash in the system when you switch loading, for example braking to accelerating, but as the other anon said, it essentially feels like a loose chain. The part is called a cush drive if you need to look up replacements.
>>
>>17199280
I saw a guy online who just shimmed it with pieces of inner tubes, is that a good alternative?
>>
>>17199280
Forgot to say, if you have a mainstand, put it on that, and see if the rear sprocket has a large amount of play in it relative to the rim by rotating the back tyre back and forwards when it's in the air.
>>
>>17199292
>and see if the rear sprocket has a large amount of play in it relative to the rim
It does, I noticed it when I was cleaning the chain.

I need to change the oil in my bike, there's a kit that's sold but it's $80 with 4 quarts, a filter, and a couple washers. Anybody familiar with swapping washers on a bike and why? I've worked in a car shop and do all my own work on my vehicles, but I've never ever turned a wrench on a bike. So what's up with these washers? Are they a softer metal that crushes to act as a gasket or something?

they are a crush washer, just to help stop it from leaking.

some plugs come with o-rings, but the heat destroys them to regularly.

Yes, they should be replaced every time

why do motorcycle frames need to flex? why cant they be super stiff?

>>
>>17199201
This is along the same lines of people who think plugging a small puncture with a plug kit on a bike with tubeless tires is some sort of suicide pact.

Its nonsense.

If the slime doesnt work it will just slowly leak out and the dude will end up with a flat tire again. If it does plug it there is no risk of it spontaneously exploding for no reason.

flexibility in the frame gives feedback and compliance to the rider. Super stiff frames feel and handle terrible. Just look at Ducati's first attempts at carbon fiber motoGP bikes.
>>
>>17199380

just soft aluminum or copper.

a hardware store should sell them. probably even a auto store. 1/2 dozen would be a couple of dollars.

just need to match the thread size, and make sure the washer is bigger than the head of the plug.
>>
>>17199405

i drove over a screw last month, rammed a tyre plug in it and its been fine since.

the heat generated from the tyre due to friction has melted the plug into the tyre.
>>
>>17199377
Well the road is finally drying now but it's cold as fuck and the sun sets in 2 hours.
>>
>>17199138
no, it leaks out the hole all over the inside of the tire, and only works on small punctures.
you also need to continually top it up while the stuff tries to work
>>
>>17199340
Speaking of oil, what do you guys like to use? Of course the manufacturer's recommended weight, but what oil? How about filter?

need a little troubleshooting on my bike if anyone is good with electrical.

97 zx6
fuel pump isnt kicking on.

So I shoved 12v to the pump off the battery and it kicked on, so thats good. I took a multi meter to the ground wire on the pump, got 12v when connected the dmm to the wire and then battery positive. Its not getting grounded. chased the wire through the loom to a relay. Not entirely sure how to test the relay. Theres no diagram and the poles are the same size.
How should I go about testing it.

the bike will start and idle off the gravity pump, but once the main jets need to kick on, the electric pump doesn't suply any fuel.

how should I test this dumb relay.
if after testing and the relay is good, what the fuck do i do?

if you have a lot of experience with dirt bikes, youll probably be fine with a ninja 500. Just dont ride outside of your ability and be easy on the throttle
