Can I get redpilled on off roading? What are the do and don't, best tips for beginners, and general advice? I have a 2000 4runner with all seasons and I've been wanting to off road for awhile now. I live close to upstate NY and PA so the options are plenty.

Here's something quick and basic as I'm tired atm. I'm sure others will chime in!

Do:
Have fun
Bring proper recovery gear in case
Practice good trail etiquette
Know the limitations of your vehicle

Don't:
Tresspass/Go where we're not allowed
Do anything to give this hobby a bad rep
Go alone without proper gear
Get carried away, especially if using a DD

Should I go dual battery or single group 31 battery plus solar? Plan to run a whynter fridge and need to charge phones, cameras. Also are cambodian tire batteries any good or should I sell my soul for yellow top optimas?.

Alberta fag if that helps.
>>
>>17136018
dual bat is going to be more powerful. seems like you have a lot of shit you need to power. if its one or the other id go dual bat. if you can swing both, id hardwire the fridge directly to the solar panel and have it be directly powered by that and nothing else. then use your second battery for all your other shit.

i dont know shit about cambodian batties, yellow top are p sweet though but there are dozens of other options that are great and cheaper.

I'm looking up lighting options again for my LX450 and am more than happy with the two driving / fog / spot lights I have on Taynger being 75W KCs.
They're great for fog if I aim the spots down whilst driving on country roads and they're amazings for offroad illumination if I angel them upwards.

It'd be nice to have a similar setup on the Land Cruiser but since I have a roof basket, I'll have more viable options for lighting. This includes getting dedicated fog lights, one police spot, and two driving lights. Along with front and rear bitch lights (almost needed with how tall this fucking thing is).

Any recommendations besides:
55W inboard fog lights
100W KCs apollos on the roof
110W PIAA driving lights
A high intensity police spot on driver's side
a backup bitch light
maybe rear fog lights

Though, if I angel the lighting, I can use the PIAAs to signal passenger aeroplanes. I just don't want to seem overly excessive with the amount of shit I have on this vehicle. So I may just shove an LED light bar in the grille as the "dry lighting" system. Like the thing I recommended the anon in the last thread https://www.amazon.ca/Nilight-Lights-Driving-Lighting-Warranty/dp/B00WE47FVM/

that place sounds amazing
why would you ever need to go anywhere else
>>
>>17136607
Like every be-all store (except costco), their gas, automotive, and firearm selections are all more expensive and shit.
>gas always costs 10-20% more than competitors
But they're the only people who service interstate (interprovince?) gas stations
>mossy nuggets for $250
>SKSs for $350
But at least they carry firearms unlike any other big box store. Good for ammo but i had a few misfires on their American Eagle .223 for some raisin
>gerber knives that cost $50
>buck knives that cost $150
At least their tents are always on sale.
>automotive always tries to sell you more shit
>service all brands mean they service no speciality anything
But they are the first place you go when you get lighting, oil, or fluids.

I wonder if they have offroad lighting...

Duel battery for sure. Keep your regular starting and shop for an appropriate AH rated deep cycle battery.
>>17136141
>id hardwire the fridge directly to the solar panel and have it be directly powered by that and nothing else.
And don't do this. You'll run into constant voltage drop out problems. If you're going to run a solar panel, get a DC/DC battery management system that'll distribute the solar charge as required, usually making sure the starting battery is optimum and then maintaining the deep cycle battery.
And hard wire the fridge and all your other camping accesories to the deep cycle.

Can't beat a pair of Lightforce 240s as driving lights. The beauty of the 240 Blitz is they're adjustable between pencil and spread. With reflector housings, bigger=better before you even look at globe.

Also, those lights are enormous! I might not be able to beat them but I wouldn't want those on the front of my vehicle... Just preference - nothing against them.

Nup, just the most relevant google image I could find. Each to their own I suppose, but IRL they look the goods IMO, along with a fair few other 9" lights (Narva 225 as an honourable mention).

This time around I'm aiming for a quadrant of Lightforce 170 Strikers on the bullbar. They'll just fit between the uprights.

Anybody have any ideas for some offroading inspired print/livery for a vinyl wrap on a 95 wrangler? We've got a guy working for the family business that does graphic design for us (specializes in wrapping cars) and we're planning on having a spare jeep my uncle had laying around wrapped as a promotional type of deal. Our guy can draw up and print anything we want and is planning on doing some kind of digital camo with the company logo incorporated somehow but I'm just curious what else could be done.

Looks very similar to pic related with a little lift and different wheels/bigger tires

thats quite the open ended and broad question my man. im going to ignore your first sentence since its really hard to answer, i think you'll have more specific questions as time goes on. but to address the second part of your post, what is your budget, what do you plan to do, and what is the terrain like near you? 3rd gen 4runners are great little rigs. you can get away with a lot if you just upgrade your tires and throw on a set of all terrains (with a full sized spare.) if youd like to go a little more crazy, upgrade your suspension with a basic bolt on kit too and maybe add some armor. outside of that though, most of us on here like to (((overland))) so if i were you id be looking at a sleeping situation/storage/food solutions etc so you can camp out of your rig. but if thats not a priority for you then who cares.

>>
>>17139755

From what little I understand basically adding a bull bar or something similar will drastically change the rate at which the car crumples, in turn changing how fast the car decelerates and depending on how the sensors for the airbag are calibrated they can trigger to soon/too late and either completely fuck you up or fail to protect you at all.

idunno mane we could do so much more with it than a flat color or wet dirt. The guy can literally print anything he wants. I feel like having that kind of ability and blowing it on some mud stickers is a bit of a waste. We could have it tie-dyed on every surface or have every panel covered in printed sheets of continuous dildos. Literally any image he can put together in photoshop in the dimensions of a jeep. The goal is to showcase the huge amount of options potential customers could go with in a cool and presentable design that attracts positive attention.

>implying you need a Subaru

You buy what fits what you want to use it for.
If you want a shit ride with a weak suspension system pushed past it's limits with completely fucked geometry and very little off road capability, then you buy a Subaru.

It's not hard to trace the logic back to the source. You're not interested in off road. You're interested in looking like you're interested in off road, but at the same time making sure you don't come off as what you perceive the typical "off road" person as. You want to show everyone that sees your car that you're an interesting outdoors person, but at the same time different from everyone else in the crowd you are attempting to associate with. Everyone here is giving you a hard time because you're trying to be a special snowflake.
If you stopped trying to be a special snowflake, people would stop giving you a hard time. If you like your Subaru, that's fine. If you like to abuse it off road, that's fine. But stop pretending that it's good at it. Stop pretending that you bought it out of some "need" for a specific range of capability that you determined your vehicle needed to fall into because you could NOT use a vehicle that was more capable even if it were cheaper.
>>
>>17140354
Pretty much this. For what they are, the Foresters that came with a centre difflock and low range option are reasonably capable, but trying to push it outside its design parameters by means of bottoming out suspension geometry and half shaft angles all in the pursuit of making it appear more offroad friendly is a lost cause. Coupled with the other problem of not having a structurally sound rated recovery point necessitating contraptions like this >>17139446 cobbled together.

>You are not interested in off road
I am interested in off road, which is why I ask a lot of questions. Generally without pictures I might add.
>You are interested in looking off road
Which is why the only off road looking thing on my vehicle you can see is my axe/shovel mount
>You want to look different from everyone else
There is no way to argue this that can be proved, take my word that it looks like the average subie in my area.
>Snowflake and everything else after
If he read anything I've posted since I got here he would see that I've never claim it was good at anything other than running on logging roads and LIGHT off roading, which is the message I've kept to since I discovered this general. I discovered off road after buying it and have never been interested in taking it beyond what I've stated in these threads.

Which translates the whole tangent into stop liking what I don't like.

When it just finished two days of hard storming, you can try out your vehicle in the same logging roads. The trails get around 2x harder and the puddles make a different path. It's like a completely different type of driving which is nice.

Just be careful of ditches that could appear 2-4x deeper than you think they actually are. Plus you get that little satisfaction of going from 30-0 by going full speed into a puddle splashing muddy water all over the place

Planning on doing a 2in spindle/shackle lift with different shocks and putting 29in KO2's on it soon. I know I want soft 8's but I'm not sure how wide I should go and what offset I should get yet. Going to be ripping the front valance off and putting together a diamond plate skid plate for it this weekend if I don't get called into work. Plan for the truck is to put smaller steel bumpers and sliders on, and eventually lights and a winch. Truck is a daily and would really only be going down logging roads and some light trails to go camp or haul a 3 Wheeler to, otherwise I would have bought a 4x4.

Be careful of bogpits that end up softening the already soft dirt and making the ruts much deeper. A good idea is to strafe the ruts but you gotta also watch out for shit like this.
You have a low centre of gravity so you don't have to worry about tipping over like Tayconderoga does... But you might have to worry about hydrolocking if it's too low or just general mud bogging you down.

4wd and you're better than the other two 2wd tacos in this thread. they have lockers, though, so it's excusable. Kinda like any Subaru in this thread. as long as they know their limits :^)

Anyway, you should be pretty capable. keep it in 2wd for as long as possible when running trails. you shouldn't NEED to take 4wd if you're diong fire paths or gravel roads. But if you decide to get a bit frisky, keep it in 2wd so you know where you can (and especially) cannot go.
Then when you're finally off the trails and are stuck in 2wd, engage 4wd-l and start it really slowly in 2nd gear. don't spin your tyres wildly. instead, rock back and forth until you have enough momentum to go in / out of your hole

if you can't get enough momentum, bring your tyre PSI down to 10-15, shoves some wood under the tyres, and then do the same trick again and again.

keeping it in 2wd and only using 4wd-l will teach you where you can bring your machine. and it will serve as your only recovery tool.

I personally learned on an i-5 colorado and at least 3 phone calls to friends asking them to pull me out.

Not on of4 yet. My friend and I probaby run Boundary 2-4 times a week since we just live in Oshawa and don't have any better place to be. And I promise officer we don't have small bush parties while trespassing in the pits firing off air guns and there definitely isn't any underage drinking and smoking either. :>)

I would have to start cutting fenders on my truck to fit those. My bud with the FJ62 might be interested, but I think he's more looking for 35in mud tires and dailying on his 30in KO2's.

You'll feel it if you're in 4wd-l. If you're in 2wd or even 4wd-h, you'll just feel a stutter if you try to engage in 2nd gear.
But for the same reason you don't want to slam on the throttle when you're stuck in a bogpit, you will need to do 2nd gear to maximise your torque and grip strength. 1st gear is like an initiator gear: high speed and leads to less grip (torque at the tyre). 2nd gear is less acceleration frisky.

Pic was from the first big rainfall of spring. Never seen more people there than that day. Don't think my friend wants to go back till he gets his truck more sorted out, and I probably shouldn't beat on my truck so much in its current state. I did manage to make it from Coates rd to the very end of Boundary and then back again last Monday. I'm told the rear end was hopping off the ground when I was going over ruts.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have bought a Double cab Colorado beater. Can't cram as many people in this truck as my old Impala and, and the problem with this truck is after looking at Kijiji this might be one of the cleanest S10's left, and might be worth a lot ,more than the $4000 I paid for it.

as a last resort (so you don't come on here frantically asking us "what do" if / when you're stuck), bring tyre PSI down to 10 and run back and forth crawling

and if that doesn't work, take a floor mat, put it under your lift point, take a garage jack, jack up the tyre that's stuck, and shove wooden logs, pillars, etc under it. i always carry some 2x4s in the bed of my truccs when offroading. damn those things are helpful.

Sweet. I like the recovery point on the rear bumper and the rear light, too.

If you want, crawl along at 20PSI and you can feel the difference. I'm always game on teaching people new techniques when innapaths. You can run 10-15 PSI on Boundary road to 57. Then run Wild turkey up to 7th. From 7th, it's just 2 klicks to Bethany where you can air your tyres back up to 30-35PSI.

Anyway, give me a shout. If I'm not hobbling around in a farmer's shed near boundary, I'm using it as a detour to go to another farmer's shed 2-5 hours East of boundary road. so i'm there every 2 weeks or so (and definitely more in the summer).

I like to race Dirt bikes in Taynger going fucking 60kmph down the dirt road with 10% visibility with the dust that they kick up.

When I decide fully what the balls I'm doing this summer, one of my options I was thinking of was keeping my car for dd and getting a cheap 4wd tracker for like 600-1k for some fun in a different way than I've experienced. Is there anything to look at in particular with them? I have zero experience with owning an off road vehicle before, I want to get one as close to stock as I can and then do as I see fit. Chrysler engine and removal of AMC caused issues for the JKs up until around 2014. But these issues were almost always computer related, alongside, of course, the general fiat-chrysler mechanical issues.

Older Jeeps have a lot of breakdown pics simply because there are just so many of the things out there. You have a higher likelihood of seeing Jeeps breakdown compared to samurais simply because there are somewhere 100x + more TJ/YJs than there are samurais.

If you build them correctly, then they'll handle correctly. If you take them to a shit mechanic, you'll get them that break any time on the road let alone offroad

Depends where you live. Here, you can get one functioning TJ $2k and buy a pre-buyilt TJ on 33s with bumpers for $7k. Then use the functioning TJ as a donor car for the pre-built TJ like skids, interior items, roof exchanges, etc.

Two
dude had some type of a "medical episode" and passed out
took out four 20'+ trees, an iron fence, hopped three curbs, crossed three lanes of traffic, and landed square on my fucking jeep
i was the only car in the fucking parking lot

Three
i tried but all i could find were ines that were rusted to shit (this was in slc utah)
modded to fucking insanity, and they all had super high miles

on the plus side they gave me 22k for a jeep that payed 24k for 6years prior

Could they have possibly pinched the relay switch too? Tried looking for it before installing but it is/was installed somewhere under the dash and didn't have time to take it all apart today to find it so my dumb ass just assumed it should all still be there since the aux light switch in the cabin has a little light on it and is still getting power.

Don't want to go political but there are a large number of LOUD, ORGANIZED groups seeking to outlaw our hobby. I've personally seen environmental groups shut down areas to folks like us because MUH ENVIRONMENT!!!

Look at MightyBenz in Norway where all off roading is outlawed except for a couple of organized, regulated events. You can damn well believe that's what these people want here. Do you really want to give them more ammo to use against us?

Its possible, but I'd just check all the wiring to the relay and make sure its properly done.

Battery to fuse holder to pin 30
Ground to 85
Pin 30 to LED-bar power cable
Pin 86 must be connected to whatever you want to control the light with.

My bet is that there is something wrong with the pins being connected wrong, or that they haven't properly connected the switch so that there is always going power through it

Remove the connection to pin 86 and see what happens. If it then stops working I suggest trying another similar relay, connecting it the same way and see if it happens again. If it does then you've got some monkey-level wiring going on. If it now works properly then its fixed

You'd be surprised at how few of the offroading guys here want it to be "legalized" and so on. We're generally very fond of our nature here, and for the most part people want to work towards setting up certain trails one can use all year around, certain areas that can be designed offroad sites and so on. We do not want to able to drive anywhere we want as thats just retarded

Sry. I haven't had a day off in 3 weeks and am swamped with work right now (fucking literally since i went through bogpits on my way to the farm this afternoon). I guess that's the equivalent of drunk.

Did manage to pick this up today for $380 from the rural guy's friend. This is going right on the Land Cruiser.
https://www.amazon.com/Keeper-KW13122-1-Heavy-Wireless-Control/dp/B005YT49V8

Anyway, I was racing through Boundary road near my house which is a road on the GPS but has turned into a light mudding trail. I can normally run 3rd gear in 2WD the whole way through the trail and race dirtbikes through it. So it's fun to unexpectedly hit a bump and get tossed around at 50kmph.
Saw the FJ62 in this picture >>17141784 in the trail and stopped off to confirm it was the guy. Just posting it here since I didn't have time to stop and chat.

Yeah I saw you. I was in the back, wasn't entirely sober though.

I ran Boundary Rd from Cochrane Rd all the way to Darlington Manvers Townline and back last monday in my still stock 2WD S10. A bunch of the paint on the front valance chipped off and the rear end was hopping off the ground when driving through some ruts though. But my friend and I are building a tubular rear bumper, ripping the valance off, and building a front skid plate out of diamond plate tomorrow.

Ah pallet fires. I miss s n o w r o l l i n g already.

Best defense against that would either be a lift kit or driving carefully, heh. Front skid and tube would be a good idea, though. Just keep the valance for resale value unless you plan on running it into the ground.

4wd would help from hopping rear or maybe lockers. But that conversion / buy would cost at least another $1500-$2500 and just not be worth it. You could weigh it down. I have an old, dark red Dodge Dakota Bed Cap that I can just give you. that might help. it has no keys and has a destroyed right side window but some plexiglass can keep it functional.

You probably don't have the amount of land we do in Canada so public land isn't as prolific. If you want to cut trails here, you just get it approved by the ministry and go spend your gorillions of dollars and manhours carving trees and mapping GPS coordinates

I don't know if this is really the general for it, but this is the Suburban general so here goes. I have a 89 2500 Suburban. I don't know how I did it but I cracked a custom cross member I built for it while driving, I'm gonna blame it on the poor roads here in Louisiana. Anyway the crack was in the rectangular tubing and not the weld strangely enough. I plan on making the new one out of some 3/8 thick, 1 1/2 inch wide square tubing. This sound like a good idea to any of ya? Have any of you had the same problem? Also I did decide to just go ahead and fully restore the Suburban while I have it all apart. Any good ideas to do/ problems to check for while it's apart? Sorry for the wall of text and thanks in advance.

I'm actually a student at NAU and have been there for a year now. As far as colleges go, it's probably not any more liberal than usual. AZ's red enough that you can find plenty of sane folks in the sea of liberals.

The surrounding country is gorgeous, drive up Lake Mary Road when you get there, you won't regret it, fucking phenomenal views.

Only big complaint is that Flag's infrastructure is goddamn abysmal. Get ready for traffic jams anywhere and at any time. Takes me 30 mins to take what should be a 10 minute trip even at like 2 in the afternoon. Driving in Flag is fucking terrible. However, the moment you get outside of the city there are some amazing places to take a drive. Also, if you like camping, check out the way to Marshall lake, you won't regret it.

Yupp. I once had a Cylinder 3 (or 4. I can't remember) misfire from water in a bogpit and had to remove the driver's side wheel to get to the spark plug wires. Disconnect them, dielectric grease them, and put them back on.

The only annoying part is really just getting the piece of plastic on and off on the wheelside firewall.

Protip: use bogpit water to cool down the exhaust manifolds :^)

She's a very, very capable offroad machine with good idling time (8 hours kills like less than an eighth of a tank of fuel). Saves a LOT of space and she's a narrow vehicle. Light and tows a lot of shit.
The only problem is they all come in a small size which means everything is really convoluted to work on (clutch change in the middle of the winter with no heated gay rage meant I just brought it to the mech).

I love her but that doesn't mean I would recommend them as pure offroad machines. They're still IFS and need to stay in their lane when on the trails.
>>
>>17157417
how many gigawatts does that wire box give you?
why do you keep a dog house in your centre console? I mean, you're not going mudding in an astro van, heh. So how often do you need to change the wires and plugs? At least the plugs are right beside each other, too.

>>17157469
Oh and another thing. Mudding and water gremlins are a very common thing with all vehicles. I have a persistent problem with a cylinder 1 misfire that I've been putting off for the past 4 months that could just be from choking the air intake rather than the spark plugs themselves.

When I removed the cylinder 3, the plug didn't look THAT fucked so I've been putting off changing every plug until the weather gets above 10 C

No I'm referring to the subiefags who think awd is the same as 4wd.

>nice Tahoe

Thanks anon. It's my baby. 205k miles on it though. Original ball joints too, I'm not fucking kidding. I did a poor man's 2.5" tortion key lift up front (which rides like a bag of hard dicks) and a set of fresh moog z71 coils in the rear with 1.5" aluminum coil spacers. Tires are 33" toyo meme/t. Bumpers are custom welded tubular steel with a custom winch plate up front and 4 clevis mounts tucked in neatly, 2 on the front and two in the rear. The rear quarter panels have been chopped to increase departure angle and the rear bumper tubes wrap around the body and follow that angle. Also a set of 78" rock sliders welded and guesseted to the frame and a Shittybuilt 9500 winch with steel line

I made a dogshit roof rack out of square steel tube and booger welds and then went apeshit with chink lights because it was fun. Inside I tore out the tape deck and put a uniden CB radio where it used to be which is breddy slick. I also have all the light controls wired up to a remote relay hub so I can turn on any of the side, rear, or front lighting from like 100 feet away which is top tier titties for camping and shit (also I did it just because I could) mechanically, I haven't done much except when I was younger i fell for the CAI meme and over-the-clounter superchips tune.

If I fall into some more cash, I'm gonna have the guy that did my bumpers rip out the whole front suspension, drop the front diff a couple inches and covert the front to a mid travel kit with some coilovers, custom UCAs and LCAs and beefy as fuck tie rods to replace the limp-dick stock gm ones. Or just say fuck all that and put a Dana under there with coilovers.

That's actually a good question. What prevents me from running 4WD on the transfer case all the time instead of 2WD? Especially when heavy rain / snow / sleet?

Is it something to do with the torque converter and power ratio between the two axles?

Centre differential vs. Transfer Case.

Transfer cases can't adjust split torque like a centre differential can. So you'll chew through tyres faster with 4wd engaged all the time. Just marginally compared to 2wd and not as bad as 4wd-l that actually locks the two differentials.

>>17157721
What axle do you have on it right now? It's a torsion so one of those "modern"ish dana IFS? I hear there's a lot of room for a D-xx swap under a torsion bar but you just have to extend a few lines, re-angle the driveshaft, etc

Another object that sacrifices cargo space and weight. I'd rather have adequate power and not be limited to a 100 mile radius of a gas station. Extra power is going to do fuck all if it's either bogged down by extra weight or doesn't have any fuel anyway.

Storing more than 40 litres of fuel requires a dangerous goods transportation. This is because they are not in the fuel tank and are counted as a collision hazard. The notable exception is if you get one of those bed mounted fluid containers that can transport 200 litres of fuel from one place or another. Normally used to run generators innawoods, though.

This picture here >>17152803 is Taynger's bed carrying hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, and decane (kinda like gasoline) in protected from rust in metal drums. If I collided with a separate vehicle and spilled shit, there would be a major environmental hazard compared to a rollover with fuel in the gas tank. Carrying these steel drums innawoods has been quite annoying before since they're 1. hard to stack and 2. very, very annoying if spilled / dented / rolled over. You're also right that carrying fuel on board (anything under 10 litres) is next to useless if you have a beefy, old engine.

IF you really want range, get an aftermarket fuel tank that fits 200-300 litres.

If you're referring to one like in the picture, that's still illegal for transporting fuel. You'd at minimum need one of the tags indicating you're transporting flammable materials and you might need a CDL as well. How did you set up the remote relay hub? I love that idea but I doubt I would personally go that route. I have plenty of available switches in my center console to hook future lights to. Only issue for me is I have a battery cutoff switch, so whenever the truck is off the batteries are disconnected out of habit. That's why I haven't considered a remote starter for it either.

The front light on the bumper, is that an amber filter or red? If red, Y?

Actually, a buddy of mine who I wheel with also has a Forester. It's not as capable as a truck in the extreme stuff, but you'd be surprise how often we underestimate it. One of the bolts I used a bench grinder to grind it flat on two sides on the tip and then a drill press to make a hole so I could get a lock on it. Lift jack slides onto the protruding bolts via the holes in the jack frame and then 2 nuts thread down to keep it in place and snug up against the rack so it doesn't rattle. Padlock goes on the end of the drilled bolt and now your shit probably won't get stolen. I'll post pics in a bit

That's what I wanted to do. But I'm not sure where to bolt the jack into the roof rack.

All the ones they make are fucking $100. I'm just going to toss it in the cabin if that's the case (or until I get a sturdier roof rack)

Also,

Yeah, I go innacity way too often, too. I even have a slight fear of someone stealing my U recovery shackles.
