Posting from the other thread

I'm thinking about getting pic related; the problem is it's a rare and expensive car. It obviously doesn't exist here, so I would have to order it from the US, I looked around and similar models range from 20-60k, not including shipping costs.

I recently acquired a 1992 Ranger with the Cologne V6. It makes a whopping (((155 hp))).

I have rarely offroaded before, despite living next to a massive >100mi empty desert. Only times I have utilized it was in an AW11 for shits and giggles.

I have now come to the dilemma of buying wheels and tires for aforementioned shitbox Ranger. What do you guys recommend?

Nothing too expensive pls, I already dump all of my tire money into my SW20.

hello /org/. There's a 2007 FJ for sale near me, 54k miles, one owner. They're asking $19k. Is this a good deal? I've looked at FJs before and know some of the problems to look for (I've seen upholstery and door panels that were broken and problems with the dash/head unit). One thing that has me kind of apprehensive is I have yet to get a definite answer on whether or not the FJs require premium fuel. Inside the gas cap and in the manual it says use premium, but I know they use the same engine/transmission of the tacoma(?) so shouldn't it be fine with regular gas?

Any recommendations for modifications to make off reading easier/smoother/faster/etc? Again, not looking to crawl.

The only thing you need to do is get the right kind of tires. If your just looking to take it out on forests roads what you have is perfect.

Camping, the pouches actually just have water bottles, toothbrushes, and other camping crap in them for easy access.
Pic of the vacuum sealed gear? That sounds like a smart idea
>>
>>17110139
Tires are going to be bought very soon. Ones I have now are absolute shit. I know stock works fine on most forest roads, but I was just thinking about modifying suspension for comforts sake and for those roads that are just a bit more difficult than most easy roads. I just need to know where to start though and I have no idea (ie what part of the suspension to modify and what to leave alone). Haven't done the research yet, but will very soon.

Yeah those military surplus gears are built more rugged and much cheaper than any bag made today. I can see why you'd get those. I got those weird German surplus ones and wear those innawoods simply because I got a box of four of them (with matching pants) for $50 4 years ago.

Vacuum sealed bag. Just fold your pants, underwear, socks, and shirt neatly, place them into a FoodSaver bag, and dry them up. I have them in my toolbox at my friend's house because I was transitioning from Winter gear to Summer gear in my vehicles. So no more jackets taking up space or toe warmers or shit.

I bought this thing off a guy who was reselling his Christmas gift for $80 a year and a half ago
https://www.amazon.ca/Foodsaver-Advanced-Design-Vacuum-Sealer/dp/B0048BPWGY

Works great. Cut the bags with a lot of slack so you can "reseal" them once you cut them open. I seal in shirts with holes or socks with holes in them instead of throwing them out.

Here's more taytay.

My butcher uses it for wet ageing meat and storing for mid-term. The pot shoppe down the street uses it if you buy more than one ounce of weed. I use it for cigars and just general around-the-house things.

Bags are expensive as shit but they save so much space in the closet. It was helpful for my friend who lived in a condo who could shove two winter jackets into the pockets of her cargo shorts using the machine.

Why not just use a tactical vest, fill the pockets with shit, and hang that up instead? It's like having 10 pouches in a single pouch.

As for traction aid, short of a winch, a set of plastic ones is a great help. You can also get a half-boot style one like:
https://www.amazon.ca/Tire-Snow-Grips-Traction-Aids/dp/B00A2XOBH8
Or do what I do before switching to 4wd: chain your tyres with winter tyre chains. The only issue (I hear, haven't encountered them personally yet) is what you hit a giant rock or a field of rocks.

If it's the 4JX1 3.0L diesel that came out about '99-'00, avoid it like the plague. Seriously, have a google of the engine. They're quite reknown for failing injectors within 100,000km intervals, and at $600x4 (provided a failed injector doesn't take out your engine) it's not a cheap exercise.

The older 3.1L 2nd gen Jackaroos on the other hand are an absolute tank, and the 4JG2 engine that powers it Is up there in ranks with the 1HZ, TD42 and 4M4x diesels in terms of rugged reliability. They're a bit thin on the ground now though. The old 2.8TD 4JG1 Rodeos (itself a shorter stroke version of the 3.1) are also a safe bet, common as muck and cheap as chips.

My only lamenting is towards the engine; by 189k it was giving me metal shavings in the oil. It was a good run, Liberty. You are missed.

Drove up a mountain a couple weeks ago. What is the real purpose of airing down? do the wheels stretch to give you more traction or is it some kind of compression thing so you don't blow a tire when you hit a wicked hole?
>>
>>17116354
Try it once at 20psi then again at 10psi. Once you compare 10psi to 30, you can see that in some instances, it'd be more beneficial to have aired down tyres than lockers
>>
>>17116354
It makes the tire's contact patch larger.
>>
>>17116409
It also makes the ride a lot smoother. When I take my Ranger out I always air down purely because if I don't I get shaken to death.

Airing down helps a LOT. As the other anon said, contact patch. It gets better the larger tires you have.

Fair enough, that'd be about what it's worth.
Good news is regardless of the high odometer reading those 1FZs are capable of racking up some massive mileage. Interested to see what sort of economy you'll be getting on gas, at least it's still reasonably cheap.
One thing the diesel equivalent can't beat is the endless power curve of the petrol six in the dunes. Grunt for days.

Put fifty bucks petty in it on the way home from Adelaide, including a bit of start and stop traffic to get out of the city. I only got around 170km on fuel before it began to run empty and had to switch back to LPG, Done around 140km on a full tank of LPG so far and it's only gone down 1 light bar out of five, hopefully it's not because the meter is buggered. Saw mechanic today and getting it looked at next Monday, so far he's determined the water pump bypass gasket is leaking and needs replacing, need a new tappet cover and gasket which is leaking a bit of oil all around the place, front left wheel hub is leaking and may need to be replaced and the synchro for 2nd/3rd is more than likely rooted, which is why if I normally shift from 2nd to 3rd it grinds a bit before going into gear. Can get around it though by either double clutching the change or slowly shifting into 3rd so might let it go for the time being. He said there's another customer with a 1FZ with 600,000kms that is running almost perfectly but the gearbox on it is on the way out.

Lol, the 2nd and 3rd gear syncros are always usually a little fickle in these boxes with high mileage and a hard life. As you've noticed, don't rush the shifts and it's fine.
On my old HZJ75 I ended up with just short of half a million kilometres, but by that stage second gear synchroniser was becoming a little lazy. Had to either take my time changing down, or a double clutch if I was climbing a dune and running out of power in third.
Other than that little minor issue, they're a tough box.

Only had it for 2 days and still getting the hang of trying to get into 3rd flawlessly by quickly getting the revs up with a quick tap in neutral before changing. Going into 4th from 3rd and engaging reverse on start up feels stiff as fuck though, guy who sold it to the dealer obv did a fair bit of offroading in it so maybe the gearbox is starting to age badly. Love what I got but kinda wish I had opted for a 15-20k loan as there are way more options and better condition 4WD's I could have gotten for that price.

Whoops. Forgot the pic.

I really like the stock wheels on this thing. I feel like finding black rims just to go with the whole look of it. But that may waste money on them.

The cabin also smells like exhaust after I welded another pipe onto it and redid it. That may be an exhaust manifold issue but I'll have to go see if I can find the leak somewhere. For now, it's either all the windows down or all the windows up to avoid gassing myself (and others)

Good excuse for a turbo manifold... :P
I also vote for standard wheels shod with either 285/75R16 or 315/75R16 if you wanna go a little bigger. What wrong with the rear diff lock? Front locker functions as normal? If memory serves me correct the front locker doesn't function independently of the rear with the factory switch gear.

North America didn't get the J100s but they did release the LX470s which were slightly different. This continued as we didn't get the J200s or the modern FJ79s but we do have weird Lexus equivalents which are still "offroad capable". However, their bodies and bumpers cost way too much to justify offroading them.
You might as well trick out a Porsche Cayenne at that point. This is the same with the Tay Yoda Sequoias that exist out there nowadays
>pic related

But when it comes to the Land Cruisers vs the LX450, the only difference is the "Auto" climate controlled / thermostat operated exhuast system, and additional sound proofing under the floorboards and the roof. Even the grill is pretty much the same. Nothing else is different compared to the Tay Yoda Land Cruiser of the same year (AFAIK).
LX470s have a bit more differences but are also relatively the same.

In many places, the Land Cruisers are actually worth more money due to prosperity and tradition compared to the LX450s. They aren't total pieces of shit because the LX450 is just a 250lb heavier version of the Tay Yoda Land Cruiser. Unless you believe that the FJ80s are themselves shit - then we have another conversation as a whole.

>>17122336
Rear locker just won't lock. Probably some corrosion in the locker assembly and i'll have to find 5-8 hours to dismantle it and clean off corrosion that is bound to be in it. Front and centre lockers work great but it's weird driving with just front lockers.
I have yet to require any road where lockers are needed just yet. Probably since it hasn't rained for like 10 days.

Oh and relevant story:
>go to normal stomping grounds to test it out rear lockers
>hope driving around for 1 hr will stress the lockers up to locking
>see 7 jeeps there
>all jks and all "part of a club/ friend circle"
>think "cool. didn't expect this. might be fun talking with them"
>wait 20 minutes for them to finish pounding back beers and smoking weed under a bridge
>drive over a glass beer bottle on the way back to the trail
>cross a 50 degree rock dropoff into a 1ft deep river
>no issue, drive to the other side
>first JK puts his head in, immediately backs out
>waits on the other side of the river for 5 minutes
>wonder "Wtf is going on. why isn't he coming up"
>turns out he blew a tyre
>wait 20 minutes to change the tyre
>spend the rest of the 10 minutes in the one hour actually offroading

me again. the aftermarket for WJs is actually a lot better than I expected it to be. any reason I shouldn't make a trail rig out of one of these, but get something like an XJ instead? they make bumpers, snorkels, winch mounts, rock sliders, and the like for them with the added bonus of a V8 instead of the 4.0L, and of course axle upgrades are plentiful since it's got a D30/D44a.

The V8 in GCs is trash compared to the 4.0, just saiyan. But do a WJ build anyway, they're not nearly as common as XJs, and I wanna see it. This is coming from someone that fucking loves XJs btw.
>>
>>17125033
I know it's not nearly as reliable but the one 4.0L I've got rid now has a pretty substantial knock in the bottom end and at Denver altitude it seriously takes it 15+ seconds to get to highway speeds on barely larger than stock tires. meanwhile that '02 4.7L HO has been getting the shit kicked out of it for over 200k miles and still has tons of power on tap. I've never had a single issue with that one that was engine related. either way, one of the '04s has pretty rusted rockers and needs tires anyway so I think that's gonna be the one that's getting cut up. once I get those two back here and make sure they don't have any major issues I wasn't aware of I'll probably start ordering parts.

I've never thought they were a bad vehicle. waaay more comfortable than an XJ with a lot more creature comforts, rear disc brakes, the '02 with Quadradrive is a fucking monster in the snow. they go way cheaper than XJs now, but they did have a $40k sticker price new. as I've said I've always had a thing for them but never been a huge Jeep guy in general so I wasn't sure if there was something glaringly obvious that steered people away from them but I'm personally getting excited to dig into one.
>>
>>17126392
>if there was something glaringly obvious that steered people away from them
Hate to break it to ya, anon, but there is something and it glaringly obvious. It's called the XJ. It's way more available, less of the nice things you mentioned that you'd be afraid to fuck up, easier modification of the body, looks tougher if that's what you're into, mother FUCKING cheap, cheap and easy to add grand's good parts if you want them. Lots of reasons people avoid grands, but they all end with XJ. Nothing won't with WJs or even ZJs, but the XJ will always be the answer. Especially once the Chinese version becomes legal for import, seeing as they never stopped making them, just changed the name.

I've got 4 WJs right now. I have spent a total of $7100 on all 4 of them. in Denver a halfway decent XJ goes for $5k or more. 3 of the 4 of mine have heated leather, a moonroof, and Infinity sound. they all have power everything, cruise, keyless entry and, much better brakes than an XJ.
>>
>>17126392
Exactly. I guess the reason they're cheaper than XJs in general these days if you have people like >>17126548 who get worried thinking anything electronic is an irreparable problem waiting to happen and just offer unquantifiable subjectives as to why "X>W".
While I'm not a fan of the older versions of quadra drive, it's easy enough to fit a more conventional transfer anyway, and the benefit of a bigger rear diff and proper rear suspension geometry more than offsets that IMO.
And while I like the old 4.0 for all its merits, it's still a severely overrated engine.
>>
>>17126929
You may have misunderstood when I said more nice things to fuck up. That's why they're less desirable as off roaders. No idea about the lower prices, because every cl within a thousand miles of me says otherwise. Hell, when I bought my XJ I was looking for a ZJ, the best deal I found was a WJ with 350,000mi, bald tires, trail rash, worn out interior, and a busted transfer case, for $8900. Ended up buying my mint XJ for $3000 flat, in perfect order, new tires, and with a bull bar I made good money selling.

well this is my 2002 Laredo. I told him it needed 4 tires, a radiator and all of the fluids serviced and bought it for $1600 with 167k. before buying this I looked at a few XJs, the last one I looked at had 230k with no power options, barely wanted to idle without bogging and stalling and they wouldn't budge on their $4500 asking price. That is an EXTREMELY easy obstacle that in most cases I wouldn't even consider an obstacle. And yet this "Jeep" is being pushed to it's limits to overcome it. A wheel dangling in the air may look impressive, but it's not good for balance, control, or capability. This Jeep is making stuff so easy that it's not even worth mentioning look difficult. If you want to buy a vehicle to take off road, buy one that makes difficult stuff look easy, not one that makes easy stuff look difficult.

I was gonna get some exhaust manifolds from him since he had them laying around from his own Cummies swap. He told me it just costs engine + $6000 to get it transplanted into the FJ80s. The $6000 was some kit that is special made by some small store here in Ontario. Comes with an instruction manuel and everything.

the best example would be a 3rd gen 4runner imo. buy one for $4k, set aside $1k to baseline it and comb through it, fixing any issues it has. after that youre left with 2-3k for mods. even if you did 0 and stopped right there itd already be twice as capable as the trailhawk. if you used like 2k and did a lift/tires you would be beyond your needs capable.

Fuck an overpriced Cummins. Drop a built 6.5 in for $1000 and call it a day. Stock for stock, the 6.5 makes 6BT power in a footprint that's easier to package and with only 4BT weight.
You're not going to make 1500 ft-lbs and you're not going to go a million miles between rebuilds, but so what?

>>17127442
A stock 90s Suburban will do 100% of the roads that Renegade will do. If you sometimes get into REALLY tight trails, the Suburban will still do 99% of what the Renegade will.

A few thousand on mods for the Suburban (still saving thousands vs a stock Renegade) and the Suburban will now do far more than the Renegade.

>>17127504
This.

>>17127505
Skip the SBC Ramjet. Ramjet intake has super short intake runners. Good for top end power and racing. Bad for low end power and general four wheeling.

If you're considering spending that much, then instead go buy a junkyard Vortec 350 for $300-500. If you want to spend a little more to give it some real low end grunt, then buy a junkyard TPI intake and buy the TPI Vortec adapter online. Towing cam, tune, and shorty headers. Now you've got a small block that feels like a big block and should be capable of 18-20mpg in an LC.

>Also: what's an intake runner and why does it affect low speed torque?
The path the intake air flows between the plenum and the cylinder. Runner length affects where peak power hits in the RPM range and can move the torque curve up or down the RPM range. Short runners are good for top end high RPM power. short runners are good for low RPM power.

The TPI 350 was considered the best truck engine that was never available in a truck. It made acceptable top end power for a car but fantastic low end and mid range power. BUT the heads on these engines flowed like shit. The TPI intake combined with the Vortec heads and short block make for a very well balanced truck engine. A towing cam will help low end power even more and can also improve economy.

If you do this yourself, port match and polish the heads and intake while you've got everything apart. This will to a small extent help flow (and power) especially on the top end without sacrificing low end power or economy. It's easy to do with a dremel and the right bits.

My main cig lighter port only runs when the car is on/in acc, aka standard. Assuming you didn't install it yourself, you should see if the wiring kit that lets the cig lighter run non stop has some sort of cut out before it drains the battery, if it was done properly it will kill the dashcam when the battery gets low. My old shitbox mirage I bought off a teenager had the same issue and because my dashcam has parking mode I had to unplug it all the time too.

As an Ausfag, I'll give you a tip. Don't buy Ryco from the Supercheap/Repco. Seriously overpriced. Find an outlet that does either Dobinson or Wesfilter (Nippon Max). Coventrys usually do them, but you'll find a cheaper supplier online.
I buy oil filters in bulk these days, as the Crooks at Supercheap charge $57 for a Z372 (from memory the 1HZ uses a Z334, not 100% about the FZ) where as I can get the Wesfilter items for $170 landed for half a dozen. Then I buy what ever preferred 20L drum of oil whenever they go on sale. Makes owning these vehicles a lot cheaper.
>>17127608
No kidding, there's a good reason why heaps of Ausfags get a hard on about 6.5s into Landcruiser/Patrols. Most "of the shelf" SBC adapter shit is applicable AFAIK, but correct me if I'm wrong. And when appropriately geared they'll achieve close to a consistent average of 25mpg in the Cruiser.

Don't forget the taytay!

I tried that during the creation of /org/ last year. Then a few /overlanding/ threads popped up every few months and fizzeled out with 20 or less replies.
This is essentially offroad and overland general. But me and green X Tay guy is the only one who has done a 3+ day trip in the past few months.

Just wait until summer (unironically) or go to /out/

This summer I am doing a 17 trip with my girl. BC Loop starting at dawson creek. Cant wait to build out my storage on my 04 V8 4runner. Also getting an arb awning and awning room.

21 more days of work so I can spend 7 days off getting my truck ready.

Will the press and pull job with the roadside kit hold or should I go and spend the $25 to get it professionally patched + pulled at the mech's?

If you're going to be airing up and down at all, the increased heat and movement will most likely break the seal on one of those plug kits. They're not bad and can get you out of a pickle, but I'd just leave the nail there, keep pumping it each day, and have it patched properly.
I had one of those plug kits keep a six wheeler tipper truck running for a week before we could get a replacement tyre, and it held up pretty good with 100psi. But they really should be treated as a short term solution.

What's a long term solution? Also, that's sketch AF, actually. if a bump goes over it too hard, I could ram the nail into the wheel and no one wants that.

I have a KO as a spare that I could put on. But then i'd be running 3 KO2s and one KO all time.

Anyone else have advice on a nail in a tyre? I might just go get it pulled through AND patched up and see what they say. I'll give my Fab a call in the morning.

Get a patch plug at a reputable shop, and understand that that's still temporary. Then get a new tire when you want to get serious about being an adult.

but the new tyres cost like $300

Being an adult means spending money where you need to. But I'm not fixing this eaves on the left side of my house by buying a whole new eaves trough. I'm getting somd rubber cement and a metal funnel and welding the fucker together. It costs literally 20x less.

Tires aren't houses, stop using false equivalency. A patch plug is good, but it's still temporary. Buy a new tire.
>>
>>17133374
It's fine if you are using it to get out innawoods. Then once you're on the road, get it towed.

>>17133402
False equivalence - fair enough.

However, if I take it to a radial patch and not a plug, it's more liable to be worth the extra $30 instead of it. I'm gonna go pump it up and bring it to the fab tomorrow and see what they say.

I'll have to get new tyres next year anyway. But I'll see if these can withstand the abuse. Worse comes to worse, I'll just put on my spare tyre.
>>
>>17133402
Fuck right off faggot

I've plugged tires and ran them for tens of thousands of miles with zero problems

People have been plugging tires for decades with no issues. Only a fucking idiot would buy a new tire over plugging a nail hole
>>
>>17133374
Width has literally no impact at all on anything related to the AWD system and it is more than capable of compensating for a 1" difference in diameter. AWD =/= welded diffs

Stop making excuses.
>>
>>17133433
Well this is a more specific issue. I plugged my mom's BMW michelin tyre and 80 000km later, it's still good. However, it's not being bombarded by rocks and mud and gravel and bulletcasings. I'd want to get the radial patch to just last me the next 6-18 months until I decide that I want to upgrade to 35s and regear.

Anyway, I'm not buying one separate KO2 tyre. that's for sure.

Is it worth putting one KO on the rear passenger side and having KO2s as the other three tyres, btw? Anyone seeing anything wrong with that?
>>
>>17133435

Teams of engineers would disagree with you.
>>
>>17133433
>I plugged a road tire once
>>17133430
You seem reasonable. And I keep combining patch and plug for a reason, patch and plug are different things, a patch plug is one that combines both and it's the best temporary option if you don't air up and down constantly. If you do, it'll fail. I'm not being an asshole because it's my hobby, I'm just being honest to save you trouble thinking quick fixes are good fixes.

>>
>>17133623
http://www.souzastireservice.com/tires-101/tire-matching-awd-4wd.aspx
>Subarus have, to our knowledge, the tightest tolerance of any AWD system. Since we see so many, we can tell you what the tolerance is. It can be stated in two ways: The first is 2/32nds tread depth across all four tires. The problem with this is that actual tire dimensions can vary from brand to brand and even from model to model. Therefore the 2/32nds rule is only good if you have the exact same size, brand, and model tire. The other way to check is to measure the tire around the circumference and then the tolerance is 1/4". That was circumference, not diameter, so you have to have a flexible tape ruler and measure around the tread of the tire. Also, having air in the tire affects the circumference. Though the change due to having air in it is only about 1/8", it's pretty critical since the tolerance is only 1/4". Therefore, to get an accurate measurement, it's necessary to let the air out before you measure (since the prospective replacement probably won't be aired up). This second method allows you to check compatibility with any make or model of tire. When we were almost finished with this article, a Subaru came in that needed only one tire, so the picture shows us measuring the prospective replacement tire with our "Subaru Tool".
>You may ask what the big deal is? Well, on the Subarus, if all four tires aren't matched within 1/4" around the circumference, you will break the transmission, not maybe or sometimes - it definitely happens. Granted it won't happen overnight, and the AWD on many Subarus can be disabled, but the transmissions can definitely get ruined and then they have to be repaired or replaced. Then the cost will be a lot more than the cost of tires!

I'm glad. I realise that you're coming from a side of extreme caution (and i would be too considering the Canadian shield has a LOT of jagged rocks pertruding from everywhere) so you're reasonable as well, perhaps a bit more dogmatic and that is very respectable. However buying another KO2 that is somewhat worn down is just not exactly the best fix considering the money. I'd just rather use that extra $250-$400 to get a price reduction off the new set I will get in the future.

I will try to get as far as I possibly can in this KO2 after a $30 patch up and if it breaks more than twice, I'll upgrade to 35 inch duratracs by then.

Yeah, totally due to a 1/4" difference in tire height. Has nothing to do with boosted launches and AWD burnouts.

Blaming a blown transmission on mismatched tires is the same as blaming it on going around a long bend at light throttle.
