Picked up a water proof / wind proof textile jacket for $99. It comes with D30 armor on the back, shoulders and elbow and some padding for the chest area. This jacket is heavy, much heavier than my leather motorcycle jacket by rev'it.

For anyone interested here's the site I bought it from. Free shipping on orders above $100.

He should be riding pic related at 10 years old.
something like
4 years - peewee 50
5-6 years - peewee 80
6-8 years - 65cc 2 stroke
8-10 years - 85cc small wheel
10-12 years - 85cc big wheel
12-14 years - 125cc 2 stroke/250f
14-16 he can get a job and buy his own bike, Not only does he have a motive to get a job he has a motive to save his money and not spend it on booze/drugs and you get to sit back like a proud dad.

>>
>>17059172

Its not like it is that huge of an investment if you buy 2nd hand bikes, with each new bike the old one is sold for maybe a grand less than it was bought for and it covers every birthday present for 10 years while seeding a passion that will last a life time.

And you think once a kid that has been riding their entire life out grows the last bike daddies money bought them is not going to try and get a job even if it is at maccas to buy themselves a 450?
>>
>>17059202
Confirmed for not Italian. That hand sign is the instant Italianizer, anything you say is automatically Italian when you use it.
>>
>>17059204
The point he was making is that if the kid gets relatively expensive stuff all the time as soon as he's able to store memories long-term, he's going to be spoilt as fuck and won't think a couple hundred dollars are a lot of money (which they are).
>>
>>17059207
You can give your children nice things without them being spoiled brats you know?

If you can't then it only says things about your parenting skills not the mindset of children.
>>
>>17059210
why would some one equate being given things all their life to, "I need to work to earn things"
>>
>>17059210
Oh I agree, you can definitely give them nice things. The thing is, children cannot grasp the value of things if those things are just given to them. I think it is a better idea to give them relatively cheap things for christmas / their birthday, like books and small-ish toys or Legos, and make them "earn" big things like bikes, gear etc. That way they will know that bikes aren't something you can just drop money on without a second thought, and value them more. The cost for my first guitar amp was split 50/50 between my parents and me. I earned the money by working (I was 14) and earned the privilege of my parents paying the other half by getting a certain number of As in a subject I absolutely hated.
>>
>>17059221
And 14 is too late to get a kid riding bikes, also 4 year olds arent allowed to have jobs in most countries something about child labour.
>>
>>17059223
>14 is too late to get a kid riding bikes
too late for what
>>
>>17059228
go put a 14 year old on a 125cc 2 stroke dirt bike and see what happens then.
>>
>>17059223
Obviously the "work" required to earn <thing> is relative to the kid's age. At 4 years, maybe have them help clean the dishes regularly or some shit.
Also 14 is a good age to get a kid into riding bikes; it's just too late to get it into professional racing which, in my opinion, no sensible parent will endeavour.
>>
>>17059231
Also 14 is the best age for having sex with them
>>
>>17059236
True, but you don't want to stick around them at that age unless you're that age yourself or you like going mad.

To be a world level racer obviously. Ignore the fact that unless you live in a good climate with very good nearby racetracks and are already successfully involved in racing yourself (and preferably are Australian, Spanish or Italian, American is okay for motocross) they have fuck all chance of that anyways.

Also they may or may not need mutant collar bones.

Sometimes if you're a retard
Yes, you can't avoid it unless you pull the clutch any time you aren't on the throttle
Okay
>>
It's not the greatest but you're not hurting much. Maybe a little stress on the clutch but who cares. Bike parts are cheap as hell compared to cars and it's way easier to replace stuff. What's the point of having something if you can't have fun with it. I engine brake all the time, dat pop/cracking noise from the little backfires sound guuud

>is engine braking bad for the bike
Only if you don't know how to do it.
>>
>>17059285
Just be careful you don't downshift too far. What your doing is basically making it hard for the rear wheel to turn and if you downshift too far it will lock up. Would be exactly like slamming on your rear brake at full speed. Sometimes I downshift a little early and I can feel the rear tire wobble around and get a little squirrely from locking up

SLAM ON THE BRAKES AND START DRAGGING.
>>
>>17059299
You're more likely to wear out the clutch trying to slow down by freewheeling the engine then somehow get it to the right speed when you pick up the throttle than trying to let the engine slow down at the same rate as the bike.

If you're really retarded it's the engine and transmission that eat shit from downshifting past the redline and the driveline shock.
>>
>>17059307
quick downshifts without rev matching

>slipper clutch master race
>>
>>17059314
This. You should be blipping the throttle to revmatch anyway, using a clutch lever to downshift just becomes habit but not necessary.

If you clutch in during a corner you no longer have fine control over leaning, nor accel/decel without upsetting the bike.

Constant mesh, don't need to use the clutch unless taking off from standstill if you've got the throttle control right.

Handy to learn in case your cable or lever ever snaps.

Just my personal preference.

>>
>>17059353
It's just super easy to overblip and jerk the bike forward at low revs.

My main point was that once the rear tire is turning slow enough to make the engine try to pull it off throttle it will unload the transmission. In theory it should be possible (albeit entirely awful) to downshift by stabbing the rear brake.

Also You don't even need to rev match, hit the break let the revs drop and then downshift. you will feel the engine break but it's won't lock your rear tire.

its always better for the gearbox to rev match, you pull clutch, shift down, open throttle to proper rev-range, smoothly release clutch then release throttle to engine brake.

I have a question about engine braking. Let's say I'm in 6th gear at 70 MPH on the highway but there's a red light ahead so I'm slowing down to a stop. I downshift to 5th, rev match, slowly release clutch, and engine brake. I do the same for 4th gear. There's so many gears though I don't have time to go through them all before I get to the light. Should I skip gears when downshifting and rev match them, or should I just keep getting to about 4th gear then just pulling it the clutch until I stop using wheel brakes?

I probably explained that super poorly, but I think you should be able to understand what I mean.
>>
>>17059788
skip gears
>>
>>17059788
I'm interested in the answer too.
>>
>>17059788
Just clutch in, shift to 1st and come to a stop using brakes.
>>
>>17059794

>>
>>17059794
This is the worst answer. Always be ready to take off.
>>
>>17059788
>I downshift to 5th, rev match, slowly release clutch, and engine brake.

The problem is slowly releasing the clutch.

If you're rev matching you should let the clutch out pretty much immediately. That's the whole point of rev matching.

You can go through every gear, but skipping is fine if you slow down too fast
>>
>>17059797
>be ready to take off from a light that just turned red
>>
>>17059788
If you're estopping (you shouldn't be doing this for red lights), clutch in and hard on the front brake until you stop, gears are not used. If you want to get down in speed faster using engine braking only, you can rev match. There's no reason you can't engine brake and use a bit of front brake to drop speed faster.
>>
>>17059788
You can skip and go clutch into 1st if you want but really the only deceleration where you can even slow down fast enough to outmatch your possibility to rev match gears is doing emergency stops at under 90 km/hr.

If you can't revmatch fast enough you're revmatching too slow, you can revmatch shift very fast, just practice more.

uhh you'll need to sort that out ASAP, yes you brake and revmatch.

If you use 4 fingers on the brake consider swapping to 2, you can still do it on 4 but a lot of people (myself included) find it easier using 2 fingers.

>>
>>17059851
From a 125, even a 300 will blow your mind. you probably won't need to ride for long, but try renting one or something if you can.
>>
>>17059863
I did ride bigger 400-600cc bikes before.

>>
>>17059845
I'm similar to this guy. I'm the one who posted originally asking about engine braking and skipping gears. When I'm using the clutch or the front brake I have to use four fingers, so applying front brake while also rev matching with the same hand is incredibly difficult for me. It's either engine braking or wheel braking, my fingers don't want to do both. I guess my fingers are just retarded, idk.
>>
>>17059855
Adjust how?
I already moved it down a bit so that I can move the fingers a bit more comfrotably but I can't move the lever towards the throttle.
>>17059861
What?

Do you guys suggest an aftermarket brake lever closer to the throttle? Would it help?
>>
>>17059873
You can still control the throttle with your thumb/palm, with 4 fingers on the brake. You don't get as much control but it's doable.
>>
>>17059888
I'll have to practice this. Hard to do though when I'm riding around in big winter gauntlet waterproof gloves. I can't feel shit wearing them.

I also can't use chop-sticks for eating food. My girlfriend and her family, and my family for that matter, have tried teaching me how to use chop-sticks so many times but my fingers just can't move that way. I physically cannot move my fingers in such a way. Maybe that's related to me needing all four fingers on the bike levers.
>>
>>17059845
Seriously?

I actually HAVE arthritis and a genetic ligament disorder (which is great for crashing, I don't break!)
and I have ridden Ducatis for years.

Ride more. Build up your muscles. And I thought I was a physical wreck.. some of you are gonna be dead or praying for it by the time you hit my age.

That bit of truth aside... try adjusting your levers so they are closer to the grips. Makes a difference.

If you can't do a stoppy with two fingers on the front brake tho, you should prolly get better brakes.
>>
>>17059884
Most brake/clutch levers have some adjustment to move them closer to the bars for different hand sizes. If yours doesn't, then I'd suggest getting ones that do, it sounds like you could use them. Getting short levers also may help, so you can 2 finger brake without pinching fingers, but you may find that uncomfortable.
>>
>>17059888
When I didn`t have back brakes on the DL1000 this is what I did.

Start with front brakes, clutch in, rev up, let go of clutch and start on front brakes again.

I had to learn as the engine braking is way stronger than my old KLR650. Now that I replaced the back brakes it is way simple.

Jesus christ you just pull clutch and start kicking down the gears while braking until you come to a stop in first then kick it into neutral or just keep the clutch pulled if its just a short stop.

I dont even get what those guys are going on about.
>>
It's a bit frustrating though. I see guys able to use two fingers on their brake lever and slam through the gears rapid fire while braking. Meanwhile I'm derping trying to rev match and wheel brake separately.

Usually I find myself getting to 4th gear and engine braking, then just pulling in the clutch and using wheel brakes until the stop from there. I'll downshift as needed so if I need to accelerate away from a hazard I can release the clutch and do so, but I tend to just hold the clutch in and use wheel brakes past 4th gear.

Main reason is emissions, but 4strokes are,,, well, milder(I know it´s wrong word, but I´m not a native english speaker) in character.
2stroke->8999rpm, 0.1hp,,,9000rpm, 9001hp
Main differences are: The engine concept itself, oil in fuel(or autolubing system), usually lighter weight, more aggressive character.

There's a 12 year old that is usually at the track when I go and the kid has the #1 plate for the RC390 cup. Went to race in Italy and shit.

He was out on his new R6 the last time I rode with him. It's kind of hilarious to see such a tiny person out there on a full sized machine.

Every 5 years or so, a manufacturer says "WE DID IT!" and then never release anything. Honda started in the early to mid 90's with something called ARC, and they even entered and finished some enduro rallies with it.
Bimota was supposed to be the savior in the late 90's with the 500Vdue but as we all know, this killed the company.

Now we have KTM actually releasing something next year. I refuse to get my hopes up until I can physically touch it. And as soon as I can I'm gonna yell at them to make a vtwin 500cc version and slam it into a Duke chassis.

True enough. It's not a racebike, so it doesn't really matter how it perform. Just has to have the bling the kids want.

You can downshift whenever you like, so long as the revs are close enough that your rear isn't going to bark at you. Also don't dump it up past redline or you'll shoot your eye out, kid.

hit brakes, downshift and slowly release clutch after the revs drop from no throttle, do the same until the 3rd gear, then just focus on braking(if you don't have enough time) and pull the clutch toward the end of the stop

And I don't think they leave the brake fluid in a MotoGP bike for a year. Would surprise me if they used it longer than a weekend.

The real reason? We might never find out.

2-smokes emit unburned fuel when you roll off, which is an emissions no-no. Direct injection can solve that to some extent, but that makes the piston lubrication issues even worse.

DO NOT GO STRAIGHT TO FIRST GEAR these damn retards I swear. What tf do you think would happen if you're going 70mph, clutch in, shift all the way to first, and your hand slips off the clutch? YOU'D DROP YOUR FUXKING BIKE IN A HEARTBEAT because the rear wheel would lock up. It would be exactly like slamming on your rear brake at 70mph.

In the MSF course they teach you to clutch in and apply the brake until you come to a complete stop. As the bike is slowing down you KEEP THE CLUTCH IN but down shift appropriately so that your speed matches a good average for that gear. The purpose is, if you have to move all of a sudden you can let go of the clutch and already been in the appropriate gear for that speed to accelerate out of the way of a surprise obstical, etc. So clutch IN UNTIL YOU STOP. While braking, you will downshift appropriately for your speed
>>
>>17061698
