Getting pretty comfy with accelerating on my 600. Hate to say it but these bikes really aren't that fast. I think 1st gear is the most exciting and that ends at about 70mph but gettig up to the end of third gear at 120 is pretty boring

Does /dbt/ think the BMW G310R would be a good daily commuter? I usually rack up about 8k miles a year; live in Florida so I can ride year round.

I've heard some horror stories about reliability on BMW bikes. I want to decide between this one or the Honda CB300F

I was softly trolling. See thread yesterday, some autist complains about squeaky boots and how he bought those for $400 but they squeak so he can't wear them to work or to visit his friends. It was pointed out they were bike boots not fashion wear and he went level 10 autistic.

For engine spinning backwards see below:
http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/opinion/motogp/why-motogp-going-backwards

For why dry clutch - reduces drag and weight but you probably know that
>>
>>16938604
dry clutch is for weight and modularity (also hardly ever used since quickshifting)
as for the reverse spin, that's to attempt to reduce gyroscopic momentum
basically it makes it easier to lean

>After sunshine, rain and fresh air, my favourite natural phenomenon is gyroscopic effect. This is because we wouldn’t be able to ride motorcycles without it.
Dropped right there. Most of the stabilization from a bike is from the geometry which forces the wheel straight as you roll forward, not the gyroscopic effect.

Victory Octane.

And with Victory out of business they are pretty much giving them away brand new. Just don't expect amazing resale until they possibly have some sort of collector value (if ever).

If not comfortable with a manufacturer that was cancelled. Get a scout. Same bike, shittier suspension and a bit less power.

Nice. What you ride now?

Why can Suzuki never get headlights right? I always try and hide my headlight when parking

Yeah, I was almost red pilled on a gs500 until I checked specs and aftermarket mods showing they barely make more power/ performance then a ninja 250.

I wish they stopped making the Indians instead of victory. I was planning on buying a new one next year when they were on special. I don't know about USA but where I am victory only just started promoting and building hype, as soon as people started buying them they announced the closure
>>
>>16938739
Not cheating. Anyone that rides hard drops pressure to appropriate canyon carving pressure.

Maybe not 25psi. that's pretty low. ~28-30psi for a street tire is typically appropriate for the twisties/track. air up to ~36/40 for regular riding.

I guess the majority of their clients are old men who like overpriced shiny heritage bikes. Indians are far to overpriced and I personally think they look revolting. I just purchased a brand new gsxr, and was going to purchase a new Victory next year. Their loss, I won't buy a cruiser now. No chance in hell I'd support Harley.

It's their loss when all the old men their cashing in on die off in the next 10 years and Indian sales plummet. Victory really had a chance and building a following and they cut their losses way to soon

lower pressures mean more tire on the ground, which meass more grip... to a point.

Too low of pressure result in reduced stability at speed and slower turn in. Lower still and you start having the carcas buckle which is real bad. Don't expect that unless you're below like 20psi and cornering hard though.

Higher pressures and the tire doesn't conform to the surface and you get less rubber on the road and less grip. But at the same time faster turn in and less rolling resistance.

29/30 is a good starting point for tire pressure on a modern street bike with sport tires.

I think Indian has some potential, literally everything they make outperforms the equivalent Harley and the company is less than five years old. I don't like then either but there was no chance Victory could survive as anything but Harley clones, Indian could bring real bikes back to the states.
>>
>>16938650
Brought a Chinese pitbike that was spluttering for $30. Got it home, took the carb off and lold. Usually there would be rubber sealing it. This had a sort of cardboard like seal that had mushed all through the carbs. If they try and save 1cent using cardboard instead of a proper gasket it says it all doesn't it
>>

not pictured. Blocks are pretty simple and there's not a whole lot of fancy technology to show off there. Like 2/3 of the bike is missing in that picture btw. They should run the looks past civilians before going ahead and producing them. The exhaust is ridiculous and is hard to look past. Couldn't they team up with Yoshi again and at least have a normal looking pipe on it for the photos?

That's really not much more than they are here, a big bagger is 20-25k US, an extra $5k to get it around the world doesn't seem that unbelievable to me, especially considering I doubt exports are high on their priority list. Like I said they're less than 5 years old and their main focus is fighting for US market share from Harley, which they're doing brilliantly (at the current rate Indian will be outselling Harley in 4 years).

Once they have a stable customer base of boomers throwing money at them for pigfat touring bikes I'd expect to see more interesting things happen.

What is the consensus on sport bike exhausts? I am really not the type of guy to go out and get an obnoxious exhaust BUT I installed a decently loud exhaust on my Miata the other day and it completely changed the driving experience. It's probably just my autism but driving is so much more immersive and engaging now. The blips, the launches, etc...

You're just so much more connected to the car.

I imagine it's the same with bikes. My gixxer still has the stock can which sounds like an angry blender

That VVT shit looks cool but I understand its just ball bearings in the cam altering the profile? Suzuki have always been strong in the midrange, anything from about 5k up once its been derestricted

>>16938911
Not only that but the older one's like mine have a bullshit butterfly valve before the muffler to affect emissions but also performance. Thankfully the akrapovic provided the necessary chemo

>>16938915
My post was ambiguous. Suzuki are releasing two bikes I will use UK pricing as an example:
GSXR1000 - £13599 on the road for nig-tier level
GSXR1000R - £16099 on the road with all the electronic shit see pic related I shamelessly stole from the site.
The R1 (£15599has the same electronics as the GSXR1000R but I dont think you get the Brembo Monoblocs and the suspension is apparently more advanced on the gixxer. But Yamaha build quality/reliability.

Whichever bike you buy, you need an additional £1000 to do away with that bullshit exhaust.

Eh, I like medium loud for bikes. I know exactly what you mean. One of my old bikes had a full Yoshi system and would make the most orgasmic backfirey noise when downshifting quickly. There's something about it...

Gsxr really make 99% of their noise from the intake if you have a stock can on it. Get a cheap slip on and it evens it out. Take the cat off if you want to be a douchebag who no one admires.

Where do you live? Ive got a spare gsxr slip on

Yeah, it's pretty much the same feel.

I like having a louder exhaust on my viffer because I ride in the city. People think they're invincible and/or are not paying attention. The noise the V4 makes is just pure sex.

I want to make a half size/GP style can for my bike, or at least buy one, but I don't think anyone does.

I just want that NASCAR V8 sound without being douchebag loud.
>>
>>16939043
>One of my old bikes had a full Yoshi system and would make the most orgasmic backfirey noise when downshifting quickly
my current bike does this like crazy. Every time I get off the throttle it crackles for like 5 seconds straight. If I give it a bike shot of gas, then a smaller one it lightly backfires a couple times and then crackles. It's like music to my ears.

Does it more often with the baffles in (guessing due to it trapping more unburnt fuel in the cans).
>>
>>16939043
>Gsxr really make 99% of their noise from the intake

This is so true. It virtually has zero exhaust note, it's just a garbled food processor raging away under the gas tank

Supposed to have little ripples in it, pic related

having it flake off like that is solely due to it being underinflated, causing it to overheat.

I told you it's at 40psi.

That's what happens when you actually ride your sports bike quickly through canyons. If I took a picture of my it after commuting it would look like your picture. It's soft compound on the side, if I corner under hard acceleration through Twisties for a few hours of course it will look like how I posted.
>>
>>16939100

I'm a VFR but, I know it's bit unique in its design and sound. I've had a Yoshimura slip on, Hindle slip on (love that thing, nice and deep), and a two brothers.

All great sounds, but I love to try new things and experiment.

Lol, not my image.
>>
>>16939278

I just realized, I didn't specify the year of my bike, I have a third gen, 1993. Pre-VTEC. Sixth gen started VTEC, fifth gen is the best bike of them all

Fifth Gen
>no VTEC
>gear driven cams
>800cc
>fuel injected

3rd gen and 4th gen
>no VTEC
>gear driven cams
>750cc
>carbs

it's funny you mention those literbikes, I had a CBR900RR before the VFR, and as much as I loved to hoon around on that thing, it was hilariously uncomfortable and the 16 inch front wheel can often make less than optimal road conditions harrowing.
>>
>>16939271
You probably don't understand since you ride a 250cc through the city bud. Since I'm not a sissy cuck I've been riding 4 hours non stop through canyons/Twisties before I took that photo today. It has nothing to do with inflation. It's the fact that after riding for hours under hard acceleration through constant turns it has heated up. Feel free to tell me any pressure you want and I'll repost tomorrow the results. It has a soft compound on the sides so of course after a lot of actual hard acceleration through corners non stop for hours it will blister

Have you looked at motorcycles in 1985 compared to 1975

Technology has improved a ton, it's just mostly been devoted to keeping governments happy without destroying performance. When cars got hit with emissions laws and crap they went to absolute shit for like 15 years and didn't really overcome it for around 25. It took 3 decades for any 2WD car to be able to do 0-100-0 faster than the Cobra.

Still, I like them. They've got pretty decent grip

I've had them for 3 years or so now and they're basically in the shape I got them in, except the right thumb got a hole in the topmost fabric layer. Supposedly Dainese will replace them for free, but the hole lets me use a touch screen so not going to. The wrist/palm slider thing is cool but my gloves fit me just so that it's very rarely annoying against the hand grip. YMMV

Buy a pair from Revzilla and try em out, return em if you don't like.

as a mechanic i will say that you should check your valves in the intervalles theyre recommended.
>>
>>16940104
I mean you could be losing power if the stuff is improperly adjusted or has just gone to a bad state, might as well, adjust it so that further in the future you don't have to deal with it.
So basically. at your convenience is when you should do it I think.
>>
>>16940119
As NASA's top aerospace engineer I will say his valves are fine unless it's a Ducutty.

Honestly, my first and current bike is a ninja 650. and it's great, It gives lots of room to grow into and it is just pretty fun to either cruise around or attempt to go fast on. The WR has a 6th gear and fuel injection. Slightly better on the highway, never have to fuck with carbs and elevation changes don't matter. Less torque so harder to wheelie and have to be in the right gear at all times. DRZ probably has more aftermarket and can be found cheaper usually. Easier to ride because less picky about what gear you're in, especially off-road.

Both are super reliable, great urban commuters, tons of fun, and meh on the highway. Get the the best deal you can find between the two.
>>
>>16940223
Also WR feels smaller and lighter but not by a huge margin, dunno actual weight.

>>16940202

the base model, while it may not have the fancy electronics is decent enough
>>
>>16940284
Yeah just because it's one of the best track bikes doesn't make it a bad street bike. Parts are cheap and easy to get from AF1Racing, maintenance isn't even too bad.
>>
>>16940284

Parts are a fucken mission for any aprilia (at least here in Aus). Doesn't cost more to get the basics done at a shop, but the delay because the local importer doesn't stock properly causes major headaches for the guys that run these as track bikes. You have a minor prang and maybe crack an engine cover or something and then you end up waiting 2-3 months (!) for the part to come in.

Terrific bikes, just a problem with the importers, they don't make much on them and can't afford the risk of holding stock so it's strictly order and ship from factory.
