$300- having head work done including new valves and seats and shit. (intake valves are worn but not destroyed)
$210- have cylinder replated because it's showing some wear
$192- New OEM piston and rings. Original piston was damaged when the ring broke
$48- new drive chain (not engine work but i still need it)
I can do the assembly myself but not any of the machining.
In this pic you can see the intake valves are flush with the head surface. With these engines they should protrude a little bit when in good condition.

Valves aren't finished as long as there are shims available that fit. Yes, they sink into the head. That's why they make thinner shims. They were working before the rings broke, no?

Not sure what you mean by the Nikasil "showing wear"... Is it flaking off? Worn through to the substrate? Gouged or scratched? No? Buy a piston and rings and cam chain (if the engine had a sudden stop, otherwise optional) assemble the engine and ride.

Or you can leave the engine parts in a box inna garage to tell your kids about, how when you rode.

Yeah but i'm pretty sure the intake valves were leaking anyway. And I know they don't have a whole lot of life left in them anyway.
All the crosshatching is gone on the cylinder wall. It's not going to seal or hold oil as well as it should.
I'd love to just throw in a new piston and ride but I want to keep this bike a long time so I want to make sure it's in a condition where I won't have to worry about wear for a long time.
And I have 2 other bikes to ride.

what you want doesn't really exist, if you make them any more roady than that they'll be terrible on trails and what you have is an adventure bike.

Perhaps what you need to learn is that compromises aren't perfect and sacrifices need to be made, figure out if you want to sacrifice off roading or road first then make your choice.

Are you REALLY planning on doing a lot of trail riding, do you really really want to get good at trail riding or are you just thinking about doing it every now and then on special occasions. We get a lot of you guys on /dbt/

Maybe you're picturing a KLR650 or a bigger adventure bike? Anyhow, the bikes linked are true dual sports. They're capable of highway as well as dirt trails. Some better than others.
You can easily change tires, gearing, and add a windscreen, etc. to suit your riding.
Like >>16836492 said you won't find one bike that does everything well. If you're doing more road miles and you're not riding technical offroad, a DR650 is good. Bigger engine but heavier. Built since 1991 so aftermarket is huge.
If you aren't riding highway for long distances, a smaller dual sport (250-400) will work fine. Cruise at 65-70 all day but not super comfortably. It'll be easier to handle offroad tho.
