For example, key of C is made of:
C, D, E, F, G, A, B
The first note is C, fourth note is F, and fifth note is G,
Now look at the fretboard, see where those notes are positioned.

In terms knowing which fret represents which absolute pitch, I'd say I only really know the fifth and sixth string by heart.

Any advice on learning mandolin?

Not sure if right thread but /diy/ told me to post here.

I was considering after being inspired by Choro Club music in various animations. (Aria, YKK) as well as their own regular albums.

Is it possible to play these kinds of songs on normal mandolin or do I need to track down a Bandolim?

I also like various kinds of folk music/civil war era music from USA.

I have tried to learn guitar in past to varrying degrees of success but overall I have forgot most of it.

Any advice on first instrument or book as well.

Example of choro club music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KozJ0Wlqkd8

>Drum heads needed to be replaced months/years ago
>Inexplicably hanging two sets of headphones

>Cymbal stands are different models. Ya sure, the kit didn't complete itself. Everything you see in the pic is second hand and cheap, because i prefer having a kit next to not having a kit.

>Drum couch. Comfy AF. Fuck off.

>Hanging tom. Works for me for the time being.

>Baby-sized cymbals. Well sure, go ahead and buy some cymbals for me. Only at least 100 bucks a piece. 200 a piece for good ones.

>Snare drum height. I'm 205 cm:s tall. I am required to have it that low in conjunction with the hi-hats to even be able to swing properly. Sounds funny, but that's how it is.

>Drum heads need to be replaced. Yeah, I'll give you this one.

>Inexplicably two sets of headphones. So do I let my friends lose their hearing when I'm jamming out with them in the same room? I guess you're another one of these /mu/tants who don't jam with people because it's "awkward".

>Hardwood floors, flat walls. Well, it's my parents house, not a fucking studio or a place to practice. It's in my own house nigga. It's a privilege to have this in your own house. Rant ova'

Hope that triggered you more than you already described, fuck-o.

Everything you see in that picture costs 150 bucks. Yes, 150 bucks.

>Because I deal. I work out things that might work, I build good kits with cheap. second hand parts so that I can make something at least work.

Also, I am, like the other guy said, mainly a guitarist. I play drums to learn music on multiple instruments, because I don't wanna limit myself.

I am 17 years old, dude. No relative/family/other finances or sponsors this shit. I have to study, work and save money for this shit, because I love it.

All I wanted was to initiate conversation and discussion, but you shit on everything. /mu/ is a shithole and that's why people like you come here to hang out.

Should I learn drums?
I feel great on bass and want to continue improving on it but I feel most bands (especially in my area where there is only 2-3 guitarists) could do without a bass and there are probably only 2 drummers in my area, and even then they are hardly what I would call amazing.

The high-strap thing is the correct technique for standing guitar, because it holds the guitar at the same height you play as when you're sitting down, which is how most people practice, and also naturally the best playing position give that the instrument is to an extent designed around the body, which is why the most basic acoustic guitar is shaped like a peanut or what have you.

Hipsters usually don't know about that though, and for them it's because they think it looks cool.

>>
>>75023958
Oh yeah, the bass amp will be used almost exclusive for home practice or small rehearsal spaces.
>>
>>75023958
Get a Bassman or full-range modeller and save cash.

Also, don't spend a grand on an instrument until you've stuck with it for at least a year - this is coming from someone who earns that in two days.

>I have a high enough wage that I'm not concerned about the $1000
Literally what I just said about myself. I used this to preface the idea that...

Regardless, I'd recommend buying a sane starter instrument first and buying something decent after a year.

Can't give you any recs, I'm afraid. I'm one of those guys that says "no, you're wrong" without addressing the question that was actually asked.

That said, maybe listen to my advice about amplification if you actually have a budget - which was the impression I got from your first post.

Protip: don't ever buy gear from professional musicians. The only reason a professional musician would ever sell a piece of gear is because it didn't sound good enough to hang onto.

I wouldn't expect a bunch of fa/gg/ots to ever understand anything that goes on in real circles though.

your play defintely isn't bad, in fact it's one of the better demonstrations of skill I've heard on here, but the song itself is nothing special honestly. The progression isn't that engaging and the quick fills between the changes can feel a bit cheesy honestly. I think if you tried something less flashy and more suited to the chord progression than just a little wank between chord changes it'd benefit the song a lot.
>>

A good tip from Eric Clapton is to soak a cotton ball/pad in rubbing alcohol and rub it onto your fingertips once or twice a day.
You can also get a used/expired credit card or gift card, basically any hard plastic card you don't use anymore, and press your fingertips onto its long side edge, while bracing the other side against your palm. Change your finger position every now and then to cover the whole fingertip.

I think chords are just, like, bigger or something. Like, you can just hear more of it. A single note like has no context in the shit dude. it's just some tone. it's not like a big thing that you can see all of it and where it goes and how. like it's just some ding. Hey guys, I've got something nagging me and pissing me off for years now, I hope maybe you may have some advice.

I play Bass and Guitar, but cannot dedicate myself to either thing fully because I have an odd problem.

When I play guitar, I tend to want to use mostly just the lower pitched strings, but when I play the bass I end up wanting to play the higher pitched strings. I keep switching back and forth between both things and it feels a bit like being stuck between clothing that is too big or too small, without ever finding the right size.

Is there anything that could be between both instruments in terms of low to high pitches? What can I do? It seems I want something that doesn't, or shouldn't exist. What do you recommend?

At this point I'm just baffled.
>>
>>75035234
get a baritone guitar, a bass vi or just git gud
>>
>>75035256

I tried a baritone electric guitar at some shop and for some reason it seemed to be the worst, and not the best, of both worlds. It was quite pricy though, so I don't know what to make of it. It almost seemed like the amp wasn't designed to deal with all those "basslike" sounds. Maybe I was just "unlucky"?

I'll get on googling "Bass vi" though.
>>
It seems that "Bass VI" is a particular bass model that was at a certain point built. In generic terms, is this exchangeable with any "6 string bass", or should I be looking specifically for a bass that is "like a Bass VI" (I could not afford the real thing yet).

It sounds beautiful. Also thank you.

No, standard six string basses are set up to be tuned completely differently. If you want a Bass VI, you need to get a copy of one, and there are a few makers that put them out for somewhat reasonable prices, like Squier and Schecter. I think Thomann even makes a house brand model.

What kind of guitar do you want (or what kind of sound are you looking for)? That's actually not a bad budget (it's when you start running into well-built, all solid guitars), but in that price range you start running into guitars that cost more because of bling, and that complicates things.

In general, Eastman, Yamaha, Guild, Blueridge, and Recording King are pretty solid in that price range.Taylor also makes a few models in that range, but they have incredibly thin necks and sound very bright, which makes them polarizing.

No offense, but that's not really helpful when it comes to acoustic guitars because it's much harder to use something like effects or an amp to make an instrument more versatile. Dreadnaughts are the most popular shape, so they might be a good starting point, since it seems like you don't really know what you want. It's also worth looking into guitars with smaller bodies, since draughnauts sometimes have an overwhelming bass that doesn't work well for some things; the more balanced sound of an 000 or OM style guitar might be better as an all purpose-type thing.

Either way, something in Yamaha's L series or Eastman's E6 series would be a good choice. Listen to some demos and play stuff to figure out which model you want; I'm a big fan of the LS16m and E6OM.
