because i'm getting a bit frustrated waiting for "the beginning of august" to happen where are my god damn records trent
Which albums are actually good and worth listening to? I've heard TDS, Pretty Hate Machine and The Fragile, all of which I liked a lot, but I hear a lot of different opinions about everything after that
God bless that one NiN meme maker btw

>>74392385
honestly they're all good
>>74392099
>>74392385
they are all good, they are just not as good as tds, phm and the fragile
the new eps and hesitation marks are pretty good, almost same level as the classics nin albums

>>74392385
Give them all a spin and forget what other people have to say, most of the time they are out right objectively wrong about the record as they refuse to give it a chance, they're all worth listening to, Trent has never made a bad/mediocre album.
>>74392385
If you like those albums, you'll probably see value in all of Trent's work. It's all pretty great desu. Be prepared to get a lot of shit for liking NIN though
worth it
>>74392385
imo none of NIN's albums are bad (my personal least favorite is Still, but I'm just not a big fan of acoustic stuff)
Recently been spinning Hesitation Marks, you may enjoy that and also Year Zero
>>74392385
It becomes really subjective, but imo they are all good.
Listen to the Broken EP if you have not. It was Trent's angry "Fuck You" to his record label and was recorded in secret.
>>74393665

I told you I'd never say goodbye.
Now I'm slipping on the tears you've made me cry.
BUT THAT'S WHAT I GET
people like to shit on Trent's lyrics, but I love how brutally honest he is
I'd say it's easy to fall in love with With Teeth as an album, honestly had a harder time getting into Hesitation Marks for some reason. Stresses me out for some reason.
>>74395769
with teeth is trash for plebs and normies
fuck path to recovery trent. i'm glad we have mid life crisis trent now.
>>74395920
Not him, but while With Teeth may be significantly more accessible than most of his other work, I honestly think its his third best LP. Its extremely well produced and those last three tracks are incredible.

I thought that this band was a generic, angsty 90s band, but then I actually listened TDS and I was taken aback by how awesome and fresh it was.
>>74395455
This. But I don't like how he repeats some lines on each album. There was this greentext of all the times he repeated the same line for different songs. It drives me fucking nuts.

Still is a pretty calm companion piece to The Fragile
With_Teeth is the most accessable album. Some really catchy songs, some kinda meh songs, and the final track being arguably the best thing Trent wrote post-Fragile (until The Background World)
Year Zero is sonically similar to With_Teeth but more electronic. The ARG and storyline makes the album a lot more enjoyable.
Ghosts I-IV is nice background music.
The Slip gets a lot of praise here but I've never really been a fan of it.
Hesitation Marks is similar to With_Teeth in terms of having some great songs and some not so great songs. Really electronic based. I like it a lot.
Not The Actual Events is heavy as shit. Angriest Trent has sounded since Broken/TDS. It's pretty well received but like The Slip it's just not my cup of tea.
Add Violence is fucking amazing. The Background World is such an experience to listen to. Less Than is catchy as fuck. The whole thing is great. Maybe check it out next.

To add on to your post, Ghosts and his soundtracks are the shit when you need to confine yourself to a library and study for hours at a time
>>74400922
When they tour next year, I really hope they close out their shows with The Background World. Just that loop slowly dying and being overtaken by the compression and saturation.
>>74401027
Oh yeah the soundtracks are great. I know Trent and Atticus have worked individually on some soundtracks (Atticus did Love & Mercy right? That score was amazing) or have done a song or two for a movie, but the only soundtracks they've done together are the 3 Fincher ones, right? Could those be considered Nine Inch Nails albums now that Atticus is officially a member of the band?
But yeah, The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl are all worth listening to. I even prefer them to Ghosts.
>>74401111
That'd be great. Could you imagine if they pulled a My Bloody Valentine with the "Holocaust Section" of You Made Me Realize? I read somewhere that the noise during that would get to 110db at points, but I don't know how true that is.

>>74400922
>The Slip gets a lot of praise here but I've never really been a fan of it.
Kind of agree with this. The big problem of that album is corona radiata, totally out of place. And the four of us are dying and Lights in the Sky too, both drag the album down. They got nothing to do with the raw garage electronic sound of the others songs
>>74401267
Trent did the soundtrack for Quake 1. Fits the atmosphere of the game perfectly, but listening to it without that context isn't quite as good.
They recently made the Patriots Day soundtrack worked and with some other artists artists on the soundtrack for Before the Flood (the environmental documentary Leonardo DiCaprio was involved in)
>>74401341
Part of me wishes, by some miracle, that Trent, Atticus and Alessandro would score the new CD Projekt Red game Cyberpunk 2077. I think it'd be fitting.
>>74401712
>implying that game is ever going to come out

I got familiar to NIN repertoire with And all that could have been, a live recording they released just after the fragile tours. I think that usually live albums suck and are obviously a bad introduction to a band, but in this case, it's not true.

I like With Teeth. I have a soft spot for it. It was the first NIN album I listened to and I find a lot of the lyrics quite good and relatable if you take away the cringy/absurd bits (GOT MY ARMS THAT FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP FLIP). I really think the hate it gets it's mostly undeserved.
But with all of that being said, I don't think the production is very good. In fact it might just be the worst produced NIN album IMO. Even Trent himself said he didn't produce it very well on purpose.
The mixing of the vocals sounds a little weird a lot of the time. The organic live instruments (drums, bass and, many times, guitar) sound nice but not that good. Take The Slip for comparision: on that album those aforementioned instruments sound textured and sharp as fuck, IMO a lot better than on With Teeth.
Also, what was that deleted picture? Trent's children?

I remember there was a video on YouTube a couple of years ago of a Something I Can Never Have live performance, problably from the TDS era, dubbed "Something I Can Never THE MOST REAL live version" or some shit like that.
It was basically a bootleg recording that featured Trent Reznor audibly breaking into tears by the "everywhere I look you're all I see" part up until the end of the song.

If it's personal, as Trent's songs tend to be; i think, it's a glimpse into his head at the time. Still kind of wrestling with his demons. The whole "wall dissolve/hands begin to shake" sounds like the rage of a younger Trent. Saying it's still there and always will be; however, he finally has a home. And that's what matters, really.

It's that opening up of pain that he accomplishes like no-one else. He puts it out there without the melodrama. Can you imagine being taught how to kiss and then being told goodbye?
>>74397602
Literally like 16 year olds with cringe relationship photos. Which screams to me of insecurity and her having an affair with Josh 'no-one knows' homme. I hope he survives the breakup.
Anyone who doesn't loosely agree with this is actually a moron:
TDS>The Fragile> The Slip> Broken> With Teeth> Hesitation Marks > Year Zero> PHM > NTAE
>>74422419
You're fucking retarded.

Wtf do you know something we don't. Also I guess you're not an insecure virgin because you shit on successful people on chinese cartoons forum.

I know relationships. I'm not shitting on him, he's a very talented man as is she a talented woman. Yet people whose relationship is more with other's perception than it is with the other person are always weak and insecure. They're usually unhappy behind closed doors and in my experience usually involve cheating.
There is a possibility though that that montage of photos was cherrypicked by a desperate autist who wants to feel part of someone else's relationship and that otherwise they do not act like that at all. In which case they may be very happy together.
>>74422641
>I know relationships.
>Shits on a guy posting pictures saying he apart of the the relationship
>Proceeds to act like he's also in the relationship

>Yet people whose relationship is more with other's perception than it is with the other person are always weak and insecure.
Not sure if I get you. I mean, it's just some photos. They also don't really talk about private things about their relationship.

No, The Slip is at a good place. It's the rest of your list that's fucking retarded, retard.

Why is NTAE worse than With Teeth though?
>>74422816
>>74422851
Why is hesitation marks worse than with teeth? Why is add violence not even on the list!?
What's going on here
>>74422419
I like the order but you left out ghosts - which i would put after the fragile.
>>74422869
> putting a release in an order without full time to let it sink in
>>74422869
And hesitation marks is lower because it's not as good as with teeth. That's how my ordering system works.
>>74422908
Why do you think it's not as good?
>>74422882
Anyone who likes ghosts is a junkie who likes to get high with spacey music for a couple of hours. For everyone else it's a good one time listen and for top gear music soundbites.

Updated for truth
"However, that also means that the two men can’t devote everything to this music. Since the release of Not the Actual Events alone, they’ve recorded music for two films and contributed to the soundtrack of another. On top of playing a batch of live dates. The feeling of inhibition on Add Violence starts to feel like less of an artistic choice and more a necessity. The two mashed together tempos and moods of “Not Anymore” could be just a quick and dirty way to stick two otherwise incomplete musical fragments together — the long outro of “The Background World” simply a way to make the rest of the song feel less unfinished. Reznor and Ross held something of themselves back on this EP, and while it doesn’t completely upend the great work that’s here, it does open up speculation about how it could have been even better if it had their full attention."
Taken from the Consequence of Sound review of Add Violence.
>implying Trent would release anything before he was happy with it.
>implying recorded stuff isn't just a teaser for the live stuff.

I've actually come up with a way this makes sense you idiot who was just sticking shit together and hoping to hit meme gold.

Fragile era NIN is perfect in every way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBKwtK1J30c
The Fragile > Hesitation Marks > TDS (I'm being generous with TDS) >Still/AATCHB > Add Violence > Broken > NTAE
The Slip > Year Zero > With_Teeth > Ghosts > Quake OST > PHM >Purest Feeling
>>74423929
Are you the ultimate contrarian?
Purest Feeling is unironically one of his best albums, almost as good as PHM itself.
>>74420017
>>74423619
Honestly that 2009 version is quite possibly the best NIN show opening ever. A Warm Place/Somewhat Damaged is a close second
I love NIN but i feel it sort of became a meme quickly after a fragile. A little self hating there, a little fuck you there, A little insidious perverse musical theme there (na-na-na), A little slow sad instrumental, An almost optimistic or clean theme etc rince and repeat.
I just don't know how much Trent can pull out of himself turning around the same themes, and putting angry guitars, or insinuating political plot devices and so on...
Even the group he founded with his wife turns around the same stuff.
>>74425733
I agree, his vocals are so fucking good it only makes me wish for studio.
But then again, probably not, it deserves its place as a live track, it would be weird to see it on an album or something. (Same thing Radiohead did, it felt weird)

Why not?
>Since the release of Not the Actual Events alone, they’ve recorded music for two films and contributed to the soundtrack of another
That doesn't mean that they didn't put their hardest work into these EPs, why is journalism guessing things?
>The feeling of inhibition on Add Violence starts to feel like less of an artistic choice and more a necessity.
This work is more complex than some tracks on Hesitation Marks which Trent put a lot of work towards to.
>The two mashed together tempos and moods of “Not Anymore” could be just a quick and dirty way to stick two otherwise incomplete musical fragments together
They perfectly fit together, it's clear it was made with this intention once you listen to the track itself.
>the long outro of “The Background World” simply a way to make the rest of the song feel less unfinished.
Does the track seem unfinished? To anyone, does The Background World feel unfinished or something?
What a load of bullshit, frankly. Without the long outro The Background World would be five minutes. This is a joke of a review.

I love that meme. Almost much as the Reznor has a terrible voice. meme
>>74426124
I unronically love Trent's voice, especially his new one, I really like it when the more mature/older Trent is angry, his voice sounds much more tough. Probably why I love Year Zero/The Sip/NTAE so much.
>>74426159
"The Sip"
I meant The Slip, what the fuck.
>>74426159
yes, much more world weary and the nasally tone is scaled right back,

Journalism is more than half of the time making news out of crumbs of information. Nevermind that they talk about an actual album, hardly any critic will talk about the actual music itself.
>>74426266
When they spoke about the album's music in here it was flat-out wrong too.
>>74426281
They probably didn't listen to the whole album from beginning to end. Just skipped it after 30 seconds or a minute, and read some reviews on internet after. Et voilà, you got your paper...and everyone else complaining about it will sound like a troll to them.
>>74426340
No idea why I expected any type of integrity from reviewers. Most reviews usually talk mostly about the artist, their past and so on.
Then again, it is very difficult to "review" music, so most of the time you either review the lyrical content, instrumentals are very hard to describe sometimes.
>yfw you realize Lazarus was born on 10/10/10
>>74425763
You can't say "a band is predictable because their music is" and then list 6 things with etc. You might as well say being a human is a meme or all of experience is.
