>Flotation Toy Warning - The Machine That Made Us. This reminds me of the Mountain Goats to some extent with the story-like lyrics and gentle orchestration, really love how the tracks unfold through repetition to become more potent over time, really exacerbates the quality of this record.
>Shabazz Palaces - Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star. Mostly syncopated beats with not a whole lot going on, kinda reminds me of Jenny Death in some respects though wasn't quite as compelling, still need to give this and Vs. Jealous Machines more listens though.
>Shabazz Palaces - Quazarz Vs. The Jealous Machines. Far more well rounded and fresher in every aspects, SS Quintessance had some pretty fantastic lines and the album felt more concrete as a whole, also loved the cynical take on the hip-hop industry in 30 Clip Extension (as I perceived it at least).
>Waxahatchee - Out In The Storm. Thankfully Crutchfield's voice wasn't half as nasally as it were on Cerulean Salt which is a big bonus on her part, the sound is also far more fuller to the extent where I'd argue this to be more indie pop with the odd section of reverb than folk-rock. Still it quite bugs me that she can't write a single song that doesn't pertain to relationships, though I do quite Sparks Fly - nonetheless a front-loaded record whose pacing reminds me very much of CHVRCHE's Bones of What You Believe (the last three tracks essentially being filler).

That OGRE YOU ASSHOLE s/t is God-tier by the way, absolutely love it.

>Miles Davis - Live-Evil (1971)

I've spent a bit of time with this one over the years and it's still hard to pin down exactly what it's all about. It's the live follow-up to Bitches Brew, but it all feels in a different spirit than the serious mysticism of its predecessor, like they were just having fun with this release, which isn't to say it doesn't some great playing.

In a lot of ways it feels like a caricature of the electric Miles sound--it's way funkier than Bitches Brew, but only in some perverse definition of what funk is with jittering stop-starts all throughout, and it has that whooping sound he gets such a kick out of on nearly every track. Most of the tracks here also follow quite a similar formula with funky proto-On the Corner-style compositions that unravel into a breakdown that's just a little bit too hard to move to half-way through. All with chaotic bits thrown in-between, which I happen to appreciate the most here--this live and improvised tension on "Funky Tonk", for example, where the band toys with the audience for an organized/chaotic 20-odd minutes, hinting at connecting musically but staying just out of reach of a singular sound.

Again, I think they're just having fun here. Listen to how Keith Jarrett, who steals the show beside Miles, play an apparently broken Rhodes with an intensity I don't know I've ever heard from him. It was an odd time in history where Can, Miles' electric band, and the Grateful Dead--three of the best live, improvised acts--were independently making similar vivacious music.

I can't say I've fully bought into the enormous hype of this album. Sure, it's never less than perfectly pleasant and upbeat and the good-for-the-soul variety of music, which is all this may need outside of political implications, but I also don't feel this quite has the soul-bearing vocal performances of its peers--none of the boldly emotional melodies of The Mighty Diamonds or Max Romeo or Burning Spear. I know, not fair to compare against the best of the best, and I want to believe, but I think this is just fine.

What he does is very cruel but his personal justifications + the happy ending makes it seem like the viewer is supposed to put aside the bad because of the good that came out of it

speaking of crashing and burning, drone charts rly are not my thing, but im doin it for borzoi

im only gonna write about corea. its been raining pretty hard over in my area, so ive been pent up just listening to this album, and its honestly incredible. the screams on this are absolutely inhuman, the noise is cathartic, and the way post-rock is blended in makes the whole experience so beautiful. so many points of this album reminded me of other bands i love like slint, today is the day, unwound. fuck, some of the noise even reminded me of stgstv for some reason. front to back, this is hands down one of the heaviest albums ive ever heard. i gotta listen to more screamo.

Seeing as how Parmegiani studied under Pierre Schaeffer and collaborated with Iannis Xenakis, I was not at all surprised when the album opened with primitive-sounding electronic tedium (Luigi Russolo,etc.-like roughness). However, my lowering my guard then made the rest of the album only more potent. It only takes until the second movement, "Accidents / Harmoniques", of the first piece to realize the true, terrifying genius at work here. Parmegiani here demonstrates a complete mastery of sounds, and mostly uses these sounds to punish and amaze the listener with Eldritch horrors of cosmic-sounding electronic music. It sounds pretentious to say something like the sounds here are rich and full of character, but I really can't figure a better way to put it.

And it gets better: he doesn't just create incredibly detailed and particular sounds, he uses these to build amazing music. "De natura sonorum" is not some document of dated magnetic tape experiments, it's a towering, powerful album in its own right.

It bums me out to see acclaim for this only in the context of its release year. More sophisticated synthesizer-made electronic music was already popular by '75. Why should pieces composed with tape manipulation (practically a mainstay of avant-garde music by then) be historically impressive? Oh well, their loss; buncha posers.

Mulatu Astatke & Fekade Amde Maskal - Yèkatit: Ethio Jazz (1974)

So it would appear Mahmoud Ahmed's "Ere Mela Mela" is just sung over Astatke's "Yèkèrmo Sèw" with some added bass, which is mildly interesting. And funny, this is mild music. It occassionally uses somewhat exotic themes (hear: the wavering theme of Gubelye evoke vaguely Egyptian/Arabic music, harking back to the parodistic snake charmer's flute) but mostly sounds like lounge jazz, and fusion, thanks in part to subtle inclusion of an electric guitar.

However, one track, "Ené Alantchi Alnorem" stands far apart from the others. While even more subdued than any other track, it burns softly with a hazy electric keyboard and bass, and piercing flute over the rough intermittent sounds of desert winds. It's really a beautiful track, in composition and atmosphere. There's something deeply emotional about that track, and it's really hard to pin. It's like a quiet passion or something. The closer, "Dèwèl," in contrast, is the most lively and experimental of the tracks here, but stops short of reaching peak intensity more than once, disappointingly.

It's a simple album, and hard to dislike. It feels restrained, though, and it's plainly obvious from tracks of sublime beauty like "Ené Alantchi Alnorem" or experimental nearly-freakouts like "Dèwèl."

Mercury Rev didn't necessarily pop my noisy cherry, but I probably listened to it early on enough that it just stuck with me more than other psych/noise pop did at the time. The appeal for me is how dense each song is, how excellently composed each track is, the general playfulness of most of it, and the noise itself is just good.
frittering and chasing a bee are also 10/10 songs.
and id be lying if i said scaruffi doesnt have a big influence on the general appeal of this album as well.

Alice Coltrane featuring Pharoah Sanders - Journey in Satchidananda (1971)

This deserves all the hype it gets and then some. I'm a huge fan of Huntington Ashram Monastery, the only other release of Coltrane's I've heard, and this blows that out of the water. The criticisms that this is often meandering and floaty are both totally valid, Coltrane and co. do prefer to create atmospheres and dense soundscapes rather than more traditional songs, but that's the beauty here. Coltrane's harp and piano playing are both beautifully stream-of-consciousness, free-flowing yet rigid and controlled enough to serve as a disciplined bass for both Sanders and the glorious Rashied Ali on the drums. The bop elements occasionally seem out of place, yet they do nothing to take away from the sheer beauty of the rest of this album.

Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz (1980)

Can't even come close to touching Ozzy's work with Sabbath. Sure, "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley" are both fun, gleefully over-the-top tracks, and Ozzy will never be any less than a charismatic, powerful vocalist, but the cheesy, over-the-top factor that works on the two aforementioned tracks makes the rest of this album insufferable. The acoustic segments are painfully awful, and Rhoads' solos, while technically awesome, are wanky and tactless, a far cry from the grit and doom of Iommi. Not even worth a listen if you're a Sabbath fan.

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus (1957)

This is all really solid, and not much more. While Rollins' skill and passion on his titular instrument is admirable, Max Roach is the real star here. He takes on a tribal drumming style that's so good and furious it honestly doesn't fit the rest of the album, which is a lot simpler and tamer in nature. Like I said, it's all really solid stuff, but it also leaves me aching for a lot more than it brings to the table. Not quite active and effortless enough to stand tall among the rest of the hard bop classics.

Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire for No Witness (2014)
>singer/songwriter, indie folk, psychedelic folk

Shockingly enough, this album has a pretty perfect split between two different genres and one doesn't obviously prevail over the other. Sparse, atmospheric folk and fuzzy indie rock share about equal space here, and both equally have great tracks and plodding, less-than-stellar tracks. The first four tracks here represent the best of both worlds. "Unfucktheworld" and "White Fire" (for my money, Olsen's best track that's not on Strange Cacti) are two beautifully simplistic, haunting lo-fi folk pieces, and "Forgiven / Forgotten" and "Hi-Five" are catchy as sin, deliciously fuzzy indie rock tracks. Both these styles are mastered by Olsen. Sadly, the rest of the album shows that she can surely have her fair share of misses as well. The album maintains a decent amount of consistency, but the pop songs get less immediate and catchy, and the folk songs start to drag and drag. Stands as the perfect middle point between Half Way Home and MY WOMAN, both in terms of quality and vibe.

[2004]

Very solemn drone/ambient record, it feels very imposing and dark and there's a kind of religious undertone too. Third track has some strings, the rest is pretty standard from an instrument point of view; as a record it still manages to be surprising and the sounds just overall feel very good to the ears.

Best contemporary folk album since the 90s desu.

>Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) (2001)

Tough to say anything about this that hasn't already been said. Gillian Welch has mastered carrying the folk torch into the new century. It neither relies on old tropes set in the 60s (or earlier, for that matter) nor is it only vaguely tied to what we consider folk music by any cosmetic means like all the Sufjan Stevens of the 21st century. Rather, it embodies only the timeless aspects of folk with a deep respect for the tradition without any of the superficiality. There's no dilution here whatsoever--no tricks either, for that matter--this is plainly-stated acoustic tracks almost without any backing whatsoever with the clear focus on songwriting.

It opens with the title track, surely one of the highlights here, a song that so clearly communicates this pain and disillusionment at time's passing through a bare-bones arrangement of acoustic guitar and softly harmonized vocals. The tone in Welch here is so honest and without irony or loftiness that it dictates the listening experience--you almost don't notice that none of the songs end up any differently than they start. It's especially pertinent to closer, "I Dream a Highway", a near-15-minute ballad in standard verse-chorus-verse format that floats by freely and lightly without diminishing the atmosphere.

>Joy - Ride Along! (2016)

I didn't even realize these were all ZZ Top covers, which sort of changes what I was going to say. These guys are in a small group of artists faithfully maintaining heavy psych rock in the new century. They have the guitar chops of Earthless and Acid Mothers Temple and what have you, and the production is as faithful as this revisionist movement goes. It sucks that they're playing ZZ Top though, because they're much better at letting loose and really taking the songs out there, which they don't do even once here.

Sleeping With Ghosts could be on that spot as well
I mainly like a couple of songs from each album, but I really like these, so they make the whole album for me

Yeah I was dumb not listening to this until now, love it. It's just the spacey kind of rock I like and I would have loved it even more when I was on my shoegaze kick. The guitar work reminds me of pavement a bit too. Bad review but good shit. 4/5
