Swans - Children of God (1987)
>post-punk, experimental rock

The perfect bridge between no wave Swans and gothic/post-rock Swans. Simplistic, stark brutality still seems to be the band's primary focus, continuing the sound perfected on the band's first four records. Tracks like "New Mind", filled to the brim with bone-rattling percussion and twangy vocals from Gira, end up as the album's best, the perfect summation of the band's years as a primitive no wave band. Tracks that take on a more long-winded sound, remiscent of the band's later years as a post-rock band, sometimes come off as overly affected, especially concerning Gira's hilariously off-putting vocals. There are certainly some highlights in this sound, like "Blind Love", but most other tracks in the sound are baby steps towards a much more fulfilling sound that Gira and co. would perfect later in their career. Their best album up to the point it was released, but they've certainly outdone themselves since.

Not much to rescue to be honest, the beats are alright and the voice didn't feel polished yet but he tries to make the most out of it; just like Elias Ronnenfelt in some way, last track specially.

Ken Ishii - Jelly Tones (1995)

Ishii's take on techno is a lot poppier and generally more light and present than I normally like the genre, but he pulls the unique take of with a lot of energy and playfulness. It's very simple, often too simple to engage the listener long enough to make these extended track lengths worthwhile, even if it's rather cute and precious in its own way. The title is really a perfect fit, these tracks move and bounce just like jelly. Similarly, their saccharine nature and lack of any real substance is a definite negative.

Bill Evans Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard (1961)
>cool jazz

Cements Evans as co. as the absolute masters of cool jazz. Every note played by every musician in the trio just absolutely reeks of sheer coolness. This performance is much less of a group effort than Waltz for Debby, with Evan's solos taking up much of the runtime here, but the trio's interplay is still absolutely mind-boggling, even if Evans is still very distinctly given the spotlight. Very unobtrusive, like a lot of Evans' work, and I'd like more input from LaFaro and Motian (who has the absolute best cymbal sound in jazz). These are just standard criticisms that come with cool jazz, though, and for the genre this is absolutely wonderful.

XXXTENTACION - Revenge (2017)

XXX is obviously a really polarizing personality (the dude's an edgy piece of shit), but listening to this is's honestly hard to deny that he has talent, he's just really awful at utilizing that talent. His attempts at slowcore/post-hardcore are actually not as bad as they should be, and his trap rap benefits from massive beats and frantic delivery. The main problem here is that XXX can't sustain a song beyond one simple idea, leaving most of his tracks to stay restricted to a single loop, minus some variation. The beats bang, but they're so mind-numbingly repetitive that they get sickening, and the impassioned post-hardcore ("King") simply consists of one looped heavy guitar bit coupled with screaming. XXX is also not a terribly skilled rapper. He's got some bars on "Slipknot", but he's easily outclassed by his guests here, especially Ski Mask (on the album's finest track "RIP Roach". I hate this dude, and I kinda hate this tape, but I think he can actually do something good.

This takes the elements you'd expect for Samba, and throws them onto a plate separately like retardedly fancy plating at a high-end restaurant.

Microtonal works very well on acoustic instrumentation, when it's especially difficult to perform. On a surface level it sounds simple, atonal strumming, but even in the melodic and slow portions of a song like Bebe, there are irregularities for a listener to pick out, like colored stones on a beach. 'Cept this beach seems to extend on forever, the sky is completely empty, and the waves of the sea come and go as they please.

It's this kind of music that is especially good at forming a surreal atmosphere, among the technical workings of the performers. Expect aspects of whispered and meek singing, instruments echoing within an empty concert hall, and silences that choke breaths.

>Flux Quartet - Morton Feldman: String Quartet No. 2

I'm no historical musical buff, and much of my opinion comes from emotion, production, and context. When I compare the likes of Feldman with someone like Sachiko M., I am limited to comparing textures, what little structure is present, and the history behind each piece. While you could call both musicians adjoined to the Minimalism movement, there's a great pleasure in realizing just how divergent each one's ideas are from each other.

Feldman's approach is greater in scale and much more sublime. This piece was described to be based on the patterns of antique turkish rugs. They were symmetrical, but with minute differences on each side being that they were antique and imperfect.

The easiest way for me to imagine this is Feldman painstakingly traversingeach line, each design on the rug. He takes his time on each shape, which is why each string phrase repeats for a handful of measures before moving onto a new concept.

Way easier to listen to than Eintstein on The Beach, too.

Almost 2 and a half hours of live improv.

It begins with the sound of conversation and high frequencies, that seem to love obscuring the rumbles and growls of other all 7 musicians. From there, the sounds fall from every electronic under the sun. Any amount of work could have been taken from this and compressed into an album, but it wasn't, and we're left with a massive pallette of noises, playing with each other.

Is this the abridged version of Noise and Drone?

It's music for just two chapters of the Bible, Matthew 26 and 27, AKA the Last Supper. Really just an enjoyable performance, with a considerably small orchestra and choral section given the subject. Seems a draw for this album is that since the solo vocalists are also a part of the choir, it feels more genuine, rather than the normal solo + some choir in the back setup. The choice of organ in particular is lovely.

Good-morning /daily/, how are you all doing on this auspicious day? Tried the following albums;

Ogre You Asshole - s/t. Sounds very much like an early Modest Mouse album given the guitar distortions and string bending (to a lesser capacity, granted), uses somewhat pop-like samples which greatly compliment tracks such as タニシ, really enjoyed this thing.
>HAIM - Days Are Gone (Deluxe Edition). Really love Falling, a very funk-inspired indie-pop track that draws very much on Michael Jackson to make a particularly fun and catchy song, its a shame the rest of the album doesn't compare and is unfortunately front-loaded. Although the guitar solo on Go Slow gives a nice change of pace when the album is really in need of it.
>HAIM - Something To Tell You. This album is slightly more consistent though isn't as good overall, the energetic power ballads and funk is completely gone more or less replaced with a much slower tempo all around and very few decent hooks, which for an album of this type makes it sorely lacking. Still enjoyed some of the later tracks, especially Found It In Silence.

Cant say much about subbs cause they dont grow wild here but with lib caps can really vary in appearance according to their maturation and humidity, I had ones that looked nothing like they should but I knew they were the right ones cause I saw them days before looking textbook but didnt have time to pick.

In general besides the nipple on the cap dark soft and relatively thick gills are good sign theyre the right ones as well as a woody texture on the stems. On the pic you posted the stem looks very transparent and the gills on the sides odd so good choice not trying them. Are you sure its season yet where you are for them? It's looking pretty dry, here it wont start for another 3 weeks or so and here summer ends really quickly.

Cute folk pop songs sung by a couple of 8 year olds, probably the daughters of the people who wrote this. There's a certain level of weirdness going on but it's a nice record, don't expect anything mindblowing.

Starting mid august or whenever the temperatures start dropping until it gets too cold we see a lot pop up. Lots on yards as well as areas where animals come around to, very large amounts in places which tick both those criteria. Also from experience they like strange areas you wouldn't expect them in. Grassy roundabouts and the like on the roadside attract a lot here, especially the roundabouts so if there are any around where you are they're worth checking out. Either way since you got a big yard you have a decent chance of them popping up some time if they're known to appear in the area.

>Richard Dawson - Peasant (2017)

Yeah, yeah, like other people have pointed out, it sounds like X, Y, and Z. I also think it has unique elements, or rather, that it combines familiar elements (Comus, The Incredible String Band, et al, maybe a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel and Microphones too) in a somewhat unique way. These progressive folk acts often have a bit of traditional folk influence anyway. Likewise, the lyrics focus on medieval tropes about villages and ogres--I don't doubt it's a thorough story, and his voice is certainly well-suited, but it feels a bit too cosmetic for me to look into too much.

Richard Dawson either doesn't have a great knack for writing melodies or doesn't want to here. As one reviewer has pointed out, he has this unfortunate habit of matching nearly all of his vocal melodies to his guitar part. Every single instance of him breaking this habit pays off and is memorable. The true opener, "Ogre", is one of the most memorable songs I've heard from this year and explodes toward the end with this benevolent choral melody. It truly is experimental in a way that feels much less composed and thought through than a Joanna Newsom album (which some have drawn comparisons to), but still less otherworldly than melodies Sun City Girls would come up with.

All things considered, I think the true draw is the instrumentals. The band that backs Dawson are the unsung heroes here. They have this great way of building tension all throughout the album and laying down layers upon layers of strings so masterfully over Dawson's melodies in a way that creates droning soundscapes out what might otherwise be quaint songs. "Hob" is a great example of the depth this band is capable of adding to these songs. Listen and see how many stringed instruments you can point playing these independently and freely improvised parts that magically seem necessary to the song.

A really solid EP. On the 5 tracks Sey from sings or has an almost rap like flow with his mumbled delivery buried beneath hazy electronic beats. The RA review said that this EP took 3 years to make, and it shows in the details of the tracks and even the all-round flow of the release.

Pretty uneven overall but it does have some solid high points. Touch Absence is the centrepiece and it’s a really great track, everything works well, the synth melody in particular is fantastic. The rest of the EP doesn’t quite reach the same heights and the jump cut like drum patterns get a bit nauseating. That being said, there’s a lot of potential here.

Dag Nasty - Can I Say

Can I say that this record is p damn good.

That was an awful way to start any kind of writing of course but shitty joke or not, what I've said still stands. It is p damn good. On this record, the classic punk sound meets its future branch emo. Punk however, shows it face more here clashing with ear pleasing melodies and emotional lyrics. It's not really something I'd listen to if I was really deep in an emo mood desu but if I was in a very punk one I'd definitely do it. Maybe that'll change with more listens though? Either way, it's a pioneering record and hasn't lost its touch. 3.5.

The Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From the Discomfort - We're Alright

Not the typical emo album. It subverts expectations in various ways making it a rather experimental release for its genre. Among these unorthodox elements that struck me were the use of more than just the typical rock band set up, the varied sound of the album and the music's interesting structures. While this can definitely be a problem for some, I'd say it added to my enjoyment of the album. I have to say though, there were times were it irritated me or merely fell flat thus making it a bit boring. P good nonetheless. 3.5-.

Petit Printemps - Demo

Not my thing desu. The music often felt pretty typical and when it wasn't, the more interesting moments weren't even that great. I get the feeling that the poor recording quality of the release really had an impact on that though. The band's power probably would've been much better felt if it wasn't for the quality which could've allowed this to get a 2.5 or maybe a 3. Unfortunately that just isn't the case here. 2+.

The Hated - Like the Days

Hot damn this is good shit. I always like it when emo can be unpredictable with just the simple band setup and this does it. Great songwriting that almost seems to take a bit from the indie rock of the time but has a fantastic punk touch to it that really let's it shine. Watch me move this up into my favorites within the next few days. 3.5+.

>Timmy Sells His Soul - Compulsory Pleasure
Kinda par for the course as far as “hyperreal” somewhat cynical “post-internet” pop music goes. It’s catchy, playful, and well produced, as it should be, but I have to say that vocaloid vocals are just not for me. At least it fits the aesthetic that it is going for and is not forced in. Best moment of this album is on Consumer Compassion when it chops and screws the bassline from Staying Alive, creating a funky intro that becomes the rhythmic backbone of the song. I wish the album did this more, taking recognizable melodies and warping them into its own pop creation, I think it fits the theme of the album well. Other than that though, this album is a bit hollow and lacks the allure of other post-internet albums.

I had to listen to this album twice in a row to see if I missed anything. Nothing stuck out to me much other than the opening track which while great does not justify its length. Although this is a much more easily listenable album than their self-titled, it is stripped away of any intrigue. There are charming songs like The Sad Skinhead and Jennifer, but there isn’t much to them but a thin layer kraut funk and off-kilter lyrics.The songs are quite catchy and enjoyable, but it sounds like a weaker version of krautrock I’ve already heard and doesn’t do anything new or exciting like their self-titled. If anything this album just makes me want to go listen to Can.

I really try to see what everyone else sees in this guy, I really do. His voice is great, and his arrangements are lush. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with his music. It sounds great. It’s just all the same. To steal from an rym review that sums up my thoughts “It’s like the speakers are given the instruction 'run program: Jorge Ben' and the hallmarks tumble out…” (from a 4-star review btw). I guess my views on music probably differ from most. I don’t think there’s an inherent problem in making the same kind of song over and over so long as it’s a good song. However, it makes me personally want to engage with that music less because there is nothing to it. It all washes over me. I let the album run on Spotify, and I couldn’t even tell that it was over when it started playing similar songs automatically.

>Little Kid - Logic Songs (2011)

Your enjoyment of this album seems to hinge on how much you buy into its atmosphere. There's not much here at all--extremely low-fi production drenched in reverb with lyrics people here have somehow made out, the songs themselves are seemingly underdeveloped by design with one or two melodies per song that fit snuggly within the confines of the chords being played. Sure, there are nice touches like the occasional piano that peeks through the hazy production, but there's just no way around that there's not much here outside of the general atmosphere. Fortunately, I happen to find the atmosphere perfectly pleasant and satisfyingly melancholy and never unwarranted, but this also means I can find similar atmosphere with bolder statements from Bill Callahan and the like.

>James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up (1967)

I'm going to do the hack critic thing to do and say that there's not much to say about this. It's incredibly simple--each title says exactly what it means--and that's exactly the point. There's almost no filter whatsoever separating the intense emotion from getting to the listener, and it happens to come through in this way that's undoubtedly painful as evidenced in each song title but all so sweet and wholesome and good for the soul in its upbeat demeanor.

>Elder - Reflections of a Floating World (2017)

Not even gonna post this to RYM since I can dig an artist trying to carry the torch. These guys still suck a little. In no way, shape, or form do they have psych or doom elements. It's a bit like what Deafheaven does for black metal without the melodic talent. It's kind of like the prog metal sound of Mastodon without any of the things that make them cool filtered through a screamo lens. That being said, there's some cool atmospheric stuff, and it's really not so unpleasant to listen to, just unremarkable from front to back.

Not surprised they ended going this direction with their sound since they were constantly giving signs of trying to make something more than a 3 minute noise-rock track, it is an approach to some kind of "maturity" but its lenght exposes how they just weren't there yet.

Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (2017)

I'm really tired of the whole "oh it's actually a really intelligent song disguised as a club hit" trend, which is essentially the design of every track on here. It's just tacky, or trite at this point. Also this is my first exposure to Staples, but honestly a lot of these tracks and lines are pretty cringe-worthy. "Move you're body if you came here to party/If not then pardon me/How I'm supposed to have a good time/When death and destruction is all I see"?--Christ, spare me the hamfisted preaching.

And the UK bass backing tracks are also really tacky. This entire album is really just not to my taste.

So I didn't like this album much last I heard it a few years back, but one of my friends recently listened to the first time and was surprised to enjoy it, so I figured I'd give it another shot. And I don't think these fresh ears relistens changed my mind.

Some of the riffs and grooves on here are killer, but the whole product is anything but. The mixing here is so ass (John Cale, what the hell?), placing Iggy's lame Jim Morrison impression front and center while the more impressive guitar and bass are hard-panned to either side. This panning wouldn't be quite so terrible (Zappa pulled off the same thing spectacularly on Trout Mask just two months earlier) if there was more to fill out the sound (a la the full Magic Band ensemble). Instead, the guitar and bass are frequently way quieter than Iggy, and have no impact hanging out in their own respective spaces all isolated. The recording sounds incredibly flat. There are some highlights, like "I Want to Be Your Dog", however overrated, and the surprisingly roaring "Little Doll", but tracks like "We Will Fall"—the stylistic bastard child of Velvet Underground's minimalist repetition and The Door's lengthy melodrama (do I sound like Scaruffi yet?)—immediately test my patience.

I guess it was me just being a little numbed by the quieter, slightly menacing tracks that I welcomed the noise. I was actually a little confused by hearing an actual straight field recording.

What stuck out to me there was someone saying "Hey, is there a phone around this place?" like they noticed something was really wrong. I dunno, I guess Modern Jester really is Dilloway's magnum opus.

That's also probably my favorite track from MJ besides Body Chaos. Psychic Driving Tapes is very much in the same vein. Also try Concealed and his 2008 Modern Jester cassette.

Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants (1996)

I really do not care for Underworld's brand of techno. It seems tailor-made for pop/rock fans, eschewing the pulsating atmospheres that make the genre so great for gaudy guitars and tuneless, awful vocals. The first two tracks are pretty cool, mainly because they experiment a lot more with breaks, but the rest is among the blandest, most interminable techno I've ever heard.

Duke Ellington - Duke Ellington's Far East Suite (1967)

Here, Ellington's moves beyond the loungey, one-note sounds of his earlier, swing-based work and totally lets loose on one of the most purely fun jazz records out there. Ellington's charisma as a pianist and a conductor seeps through every note played here, even when some of the tracks drag on. Despite the overdone length of some pieces and the slight over-rigidity of the band as a whole, Ellington never lets the album become anything less than a damn good time.

Orbital - In Sides (1996)

I can't even really deny that this is essentially the same song repeated eight times, but it's a really damn good same song. This avoids stagnation by becoming the musical representation of its cover—colorful and sprawling. Every track here has layers and layers than unfold as they progress, and the duo just has a way with getting the most perfectly spine-tingling synth sounds. Still definitely a slightly neutered take on techno, but it really works out.
