The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Pretty good bit of doom/stoner stuff. Instrumentally well put together with some nice riffs, unique singer. The song “Cirith Ungol” is great, funerary tempo and high tension throughout.

Saagara - 2 (2017)
>jazz fusion

Very cool spacey fusion. There's a major influence from Indian classical music that drives a lot of these pieces, but this whole album is indebted a lot more to drone and minimalism than anything else. There's really not much jazz here save for the usage of saxophones and such. Frankly, some of these jazz influences might seem shoehorned. But, the drones here are second to none, they're hypnotic and groovy, and completely enveloping. One of my new favorites of the year.

...Native Hipsters - There Goes Concorde Again (2001)
>experimental rock, post-punk

Legitimately one of the weirdest albums I've ever heard in my life, and I don't mean that in a good way. I'd be lying if I said this wasn't ahead of its time, because it pretty much predates plunderphonics by about a decade, but the implementation of this proto-plunderphonics style is really disjointed and pretty bad. I /love/ the vocals on "Mr Magic" (especially the pronunciation of "hey you", and I can't explain this), but besides that every other plunderphonics/tape music track lays down an idea and proceeds to either do nothing with it or just irritate with it. That being said, the more streamlined rock tracks here are actually quite good. The guitar work here is low-key but generally astounding, especially in it's feedback-drenced, lo-fi form on the closer. By and large one of the patchiest albums I've ever listened to, with exceedingly low lows, but it's interesting and fun.

2.0+

Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra - Balalaika Favorites (1962)
>russian folk music

Hearing the balalaika used in this context is weird, but it mostly works. The cover certainly does not lie, this really strikes me as russian folk music filtered for an American audience, especially with the selection of generally popular Western songs. This makes the album never really rise above and beyond being a bit of a novelty, especially since some of the non balalaika instrumental additions come off as quite goofy, but the best pieces here are performed incredibly well, and there's a fury to the balalaika that isn't really heard on other instruments in classical and folk music. Bonus points to what would become the Tetris theme in "Fantasy on Two Folk Songs".

Screaming Headless Torsos – Screaming Headless Torsos (1995)
>Funk-Rock, Jazz-Funk, Rap-Rock
Incredibly funky fusion album that sounds almost math-rocky at times. I could do without the vocals though, the rapping isn’t very impressive and I think a more James-Brownesque singing style would fit the music better instead of the tamer style that is displayed here. But overall it’s a fun album that is mostly carried by its spastic rythms. 5/10

So thoughts on the remaster.

Well I love the record and I love the B-sides (except for Lull. M E H song). The remaster is a little bit too bricked but some of the elements stand out in the mix, which is amazing. The fucking drums rock. This has been my major complaint about the B-Sides usually where the tracks are much more "rock all out".

Then there are the unreleased tracks that I love so fucking much, especially Man Of War and Lift. Even I Promise grew on me.

So yeah, I'm just happy.

9+/10 cause Lull.

I'll admit I've had to rush a bit today since I'm going on holiday, got some pretty big shifts to compensate and the like. So whilst I've marked off Beat Happening and Stereolab I have yet to listen to them, will do so over the course of my holiday however. Went on a whim and listened to the following;
>Bluetile Lounge - Lowercase. Listened to this just before I went to bed and it was really comfy, especially liked Ambered, very melodic track.
>The Names - Swimming + Singles. Listening to this right now if only because I really liked the album cover. Got a nice post-punk/ new wave feel with some ethereal synths thrown into the mix alongside a voice that slightly reminds me of early Robert Smith.
>Power Trip - Nightmare Logic. Gosh this is good, perhaps my album of the year so far (not that there's really any competition, this years quite dormant as far as recent/ new artists go), love the production on this thing and the buzz-saw guitars that chain open on songs like Firing Squad and Crucifixion.
>Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary. Listened on a whim again, will play numerous times on holiday, the vocals quite surprised me though so did the bands sound in general. Given their affiliation with Arcade Fire and Isaac Brock I was expecting deep philosophical lyrics over intense orchestration, still Shine A Light is great.

Such a complex, anxious masterpiece. The blaring horns and scratchy strings were so beautifully grating.. this is classical music from the darkest place. The piano, bells, and chimes were gorgeous as well the few times they appeared. Damn my ratings are so predictable sometimes..

>Peter Zummo - Zummo With an X

Post-minimalism. Soft and gentle unbombastic but not droney. Sparse and slow moving but rarely boring as most of the pieces are quite short 1-5 mins pieces with one longish piece. A frequent collaborator of Arthur Russell-- Arthur plays on this album and Peter played many of the horn parts throughout all of Arthurs work, disco, classical and ambient pop stuff. This album works in a similar pallet to Arthur's ambient pop stuff and it actually features Arthur on vocals and cello on some tracks and many of his collaborators and friends play on it too. Zummo seems to focus on rhythms and a sonic pallette rather than a spiritual, philosophical, or scientific context within which minimalist composition is often placed in. Theres a loose quality to it that refreshing in the context of Reich-ian mathematical exactitude or commercial perfection of Glass.

7/10

>Peter Gordon's Love of Life Orchestra - Love of Life Orchestra

Heard about this as a work in post-minimalism but its not at all what I expected. These are rock or disco songs at their core. Feature aspects of repetition related to academic artistic notions of minimalism. Its verrry 80s New York art world downtown scene--- I mean look at this list of people who have played in the group: David Van Tieghem ,David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Laurie Anderson, "Blue" Gene Tyranny, Ken Deifik, Scott Johnson, Rhys Chatham, Peter Zummo, Arthur Russell, Kathy Acker, Jill Kroesen, the list goes on.... Throw together jazzy horn sections, screechy no wave sections, disco beats, classically trained vocalists, and many of 80s New Yorks most respected names. Some very good dancy arty disco tracks, my favorite being "That Hat" a disco-y track written by Russell with amazing vocals. Unfortunately many of the rock-y-er songs feel a little jammy and directionless.
Its a compilation so not particularly cohesive. This is a group that would have probably been amazing to see live rather than recordings.

It's good so far, definitely better than Summertime '06 which I thought was quite mixed. The production is the highlight here for sure. Some tracks are club oriented and kinda standard while there are tracks like Yeah Right that are completely off the wall bangers that do actually sound like the future of rap. It's refreshing to have a rapper that is aware of pc music and other associated movements.

2.5
Noisy, melodic, low fi, most of the songs in here actually develop into something else (or they try to), they could start in a psychedelic mood or a punk one and start to play around from there which gives a fresh feel for both of these styles.
It is just 8 tracks long with the most creative stuff resting in the first side, still nothing more than a nice little record.

>Wei Zhongle - Raised High/ Brought Low

Really awesome contemporary avant-prog (released 2013). Obvious influence from East asian classical and folk musics along with mathy prog styles and RIO. The five piece band consists of guitar (which is often prepared), bass, drums, vocals, and two clarinets. Often using east Asian scales and odd time signatures. Complex interlocking riffs between all of the instruments. The vocals are sometimes corny but unique and interesting enough not to detract. Pretty singular band as far as I'm aware and this could very well be the best prog album of the 10s.

7.5/10

>Parlor Walls - Opposites

Quite good 2017 noise rock. Much different than I expected from the album cover that looks like it would fit some shitty bandcamp emo or a Best Coast-like indie pop release. Pummeling guitar and drums and saxophone. Poppy yet dissonant often repetitive femme presenting vocals. Angry urgency in all of the tracks. I know that may sound like a noise rock cliche but this doesn't fall into any archetype exactly. It has enough indivduality and character to sound like their own band but within the album theres little variation and I felt it dragged on as a full length.

Maybe a little niche, I'm sure it's decently well known and some people here even consider it a "failure" because it's Sufjan and it never attained popularity, but I just ran into Enjoy Your Rabbit, and it's the exact glitchy, bombastic sound I look for. Highly recommend. Wish he did more like this. Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of the Age of Adz.

could someone point me to an album about beating depression. something that will motivate me.

my friends are out and about getting laid and working while I'm stuck at home applying to internship after internship and ending the day with my dick in my hand.

I don't want songs about those feelings. I want songs about kicking them. I'm sick of wallowing in emo music that I relate to. I want a healthy perspective

The two compilations were really long, and about as inconsistent as you'd expect for a selection of songs from over 10 years and 5 aliases. aBliss just kind of exists, even after a couple listens there's nothing that really stands out.

>woolite vs stick

Quasimoto was an overall nice, head-bobbing experience. The boom-bap beats are easy breezy, have a sense of familiarity that provide an easy gateway for the ear. That coupled with the good, cocky, funny wordplay, and solid use of pitch-shift rapping, it was a nice experience. Some tracks don't stand out to me like others do, but overall good. Sun City Girls is okay. I definitely find myself enjoying the surf rock based tracks like Blue Mamba and Radar 1941. Shining Path was good. Feel like the tracks that were attempting to imitate or had influence to arabic music were stellar instrumentally, but the gibberish and squealing vocals did not help the experimentation, gave me a headache, winced a little. A lot of it flew over my head in a muffled way. TL;DR: Both albums have interesting aspects that I like, will definitely have to reflect on more, but at the moment, woolite's choice is sticking more to me. Woolite's choice wins.

>darklands vs Jesz

Spacemen 3 have a nice little bluesy garage rock sound, coupled with some soothing organs and bassline that lay a solid foundation for the songs. Many of the vocal chops definitely remind me of Lou Reed, except a bit more hushed, some points it works, other it doesn't. The hallucinogenic feel of the album is solid, and, I don't know if it's just me, but I'm getting reminded a bit of the Incredible String Band. Some distortion works to the band's, but I honestly got more into the smoother instrumental passages when listening to this for the first time. Mazzy Star's percussion really kicks and reverberates hard. Fade Into You is a solid track, don't get how it charted or got so much acclaim. In Mary of Silence, Hope's vocals seems alluring, seductive even. The acoustic, alt-country ballads, like Five String Serenade, Blue Light, definitely fit Hope's vocals. Quality stuff. TL;DR: Both were solid choices, but Jesz's choice stood out to me more. Good job you can advance.

Angles 9 - Disappeared Behind the Sun (2017)
>experimental big band, avant-garde jazz

One of the most exhilirating, fun jazz albums I've ever heard, bogged down by a really unimaginative rhythm section. Andreas Werliin turns in fine work, but he's so deeply rooted in rock here and the style just doesn't work with the wonderful performances by the rest of the band. The rock structures do occasionally work, making this probably the grooviest, most danceable jazz album I've ever heard, rooted by some comparatively chill piano and vibes work to balance out the free, schizoid sax work. Fire! Orchestra does better work in this style, but this is still real good.

Angus MacLise - Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda (1999)
>drone, minimalism

Every track beyond the title track is worthless, but that title track is such a revelation the whole album is worth it. MacLise is often overshadowed by the other members of the Theater of Eternal Music, but he has such a good idea of how to utilize tribal elements in the context of ambient music, sprinkling in percussive moments to make the forty-minute title track consistently fresh and engrossing throughout. The remaining four tracks basically to the same thing without nearly as much finesse, so this would definitely benefit from just consisting of the title track, but it's a nice listen all the way through.

AND SO IT BEGINS

Xiu Xiu - A Promise (2003)
>experimental rock, electronic, experimental

Not as inpenetrable as I would've thought this was based on the RYM reviews, but yeah, it's pretty damn weird. Stewart's melodramatic vocal performances are the emotional core of this record. He whispers through nearly every track, backed by sparse acoustic guitars and vaguely electronic bleeps and bloops, and his emotional releases are when this album reaches its peak. I love these emotional releases, along with the more active tracks, but the tracks that consist solely of Stewart ominously whispering do absolutely nothing for me. The sparseness works, but it's just boring to listen to, for lack of a better word. Knife Play and Twin Peaks are both definitely better, in my book.

Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory (2017)
>west coast hip hop, experimental hip hop, hardcore hip hop

The freshest mainstream hip hop album this side of Yeezus. Staples himself is comparatively kind of unimpressive, his verses are short and they don't stick out much, but the production is absolutely insane. It takes influence from pretty much every genre of EDM out there, and it introduces an experimental tinge that gives the album a grimey, forbiding feel. The interludes, where the experimental elements take the forefront, are a bit pointless, but they fit the flow of the album perfectly, and the banging tracks are just that. "Yeah Right" is the hip hop track of the year, bar none. The beat is absolutely humongous, and Staples and Kendrick Lamar are both pitch-perfect. My hip hop AOTY.

Yes
The live dynamics sold the song way better but I still enjoy it. Not as much as Big Boots, but still.

I've never been on one of these threads, but I thought I'd give it a try. Made a chart of some albums I've had sitting in my backcatalogue of 2017 albums that I've been neglecting so I guess I'll start going through that! Might make a second chart for albums off the chart with /daily/core and favorites of other members.

I already like "s" because he's got Natural Snow Buildings on his.

Just taking my new reaction out for a spin, not actually related to your post
>>
>>73555694
Nah, I've never made an account there. Just seems like so much work to go through every album I've already heard and assign a rating to it.
The chart function has been very handy for me though. This is the first year I've really been making sure to keep up with new music and also listening to things and cementing my own opinion before I go reading any reviews/aggregations about them, which would normally tend to nudge my opinions in a certain direction, whether consciously or not. So I went through the full list of the top 1000 albums of 2017 on there and sampled each one that fell under any genres that interest me, so that combined with looking at each new release on Apple Music each week (if anyone has other sources for keeping up with everything that comes out each week, I'd love to hear them since I'm sure they don't all wind up on Apple Music) has me left with a good 200 albums after deleting any that don't really grab me. Really turned me on to a bunch of stuff I'd never heard of or seen discussed on /mu/ so I'd highly recommend doing it.
Idk though, it would be nice to catalog things on there. Maybe I'll make one and just ignore what I'm already really familiar with and start logging anything new I hear.

Can am des puig - book of am pts. 1 and 2
Singer sounds a bit like Joan Baez, not that much memorable about it besides that.
3

Tovarisch - cyrillic words

BLURB REVIEW HELL (tm)

>Piper Spray - Krolorog
Glitchy beats album that loses a lot of steam really quickly. The first few tracks are really nice tho.
6

>of Montreal - Innocence Reaches
Pretty meh album. The last few tracks are cool.
Don't pass up the chance to see em live though.
5

>Ouvala - Psychology of Colour
Just a generally good ambient record, if that's your thing.
7

>Tristan Perich - Noise Patterns
Just what it says on the tin. It's as interesting as it is annoying. If you like Ikeda and really want some headaches, go here.
4

>The Raymond MacDonald International Big Band - Buddy
The low-mixed vocals and the last track were kinda neat.
6

>Fenn O'Berg - Live in Japan Part One
Live recordings loosely based off their album In Stereo. A very noisey set from the group, even rivaling the oppression of their debut. Not entirely for the best, but an interesting turn.
7

>Taku Unami - Ichimannen, Go...: Soundtrack
Already praised this in here, but that's no reason to not bump it again.
Taku Unami is a musician of rooms. Every one of his albums is made in some way to fill a room, real or not. His music usually reflects the blank space of an empty art museum, or some kind of void.
The thing about this album is that Unami has been given an entire movie to fill, thus creating the most varied and wonderful solo effort I've heard from him.
Blasts of static noise are followed by periods of pseudo-silence, then by beautiful orchestral pieces or quirky drum based songs, fitting for the joke character in a jrpg. Did Unami compose these pieces? Did he make these recordings? Does it matter? Is my nose bleeding?
A seriously spectacular album, essential for all fans of experimental music. The last two tracks defy music.
9

>Gato - The Third World
It's neat to hear the latin influence read so clear through all of the chaos.

A successful experiment in seeing how far you can go with making beats unlikable before they cease to be beats. Fun, but not enjoyable really.

>Pinkcourtesyphone - Taking Into Account Only a Portion of Your Emotions
Glad to see Chartier getting more attention outside of being the guy who noodled with Basinski a few times. Just a solid drone record.

>Jim O'Rourke - Kunstradio 1.10.1998
A German man gives you a history of Jim O'Rourke up to 1998. Includes several sections of unreleased music, all of which sound pretty good. This also features early versions of the first half of Movie on the Way Down and Through the Night Softly, plus an unrelated studio argument laid overtop of a film score.
If you're German, or like deep cuts, this is a pretty solid listen.
6

>Fantômas & John Zorn / Jim O'Rourke - The Films of Kenneth Anger
Recording quality is pretty shit, as was expected, but this is still kinda cool tribal stuff. Thanks again to the dude here who got me links for these.

>The Range - Potential
It's really nice to hear a semi experimental EDM album that uses a variety of styles to create a thematically solid, contained package that isn't 70 minutes long.
7

>Fenn O'Berg - Live in Japan Part Two
Not sure why this wasn't one album but whatever.
7

>Jim O'Rourke & Christoph Heemann - Plastic Palace People Vol 1
That progressive electronic genre tag gave me an immediate semi, but this is a much more drone based composition than that tag would imply. My favorite of the group is the final track, which does a great job of slowly warping and contorting such an angelic tone.
7

>" " [sic] Tim Goldie - Abjector [sic]
Disc 1 is sparse.
Disc 2 is loud.
6

>Pescado Rabioso - Artaud
Kinda meh folk rock. Some highlights.
6

>Genetics and Windsurfing - Nonlinear Record
Listen up, Liturgy fanboys. This is what the metal of the future will sound like.
None of your nerves are safe from this hellish firestorm of glitching, sparking, industrial noise.
His first EP was still better tho.
7

>Red Vox - What Could Go Wrong
Been a Vinesauce fan for a while, so it's good to hear that his music isn't unlistenable.
I mean, it sure ain't GOOD, but it's nice that it's there.
That being said, it's still really bad, mostly in the lyrical department. There are also some weird production choices. Not sure why there was a music box breakdown on one track.
2

>Renjā - Symphonies of Inorganic Life
Went in expecting ok ambient vaporwave. Ended up with ok atmospheric glitch-hop.
All good with me.
6

>Matthew Revert / Vanessa Rossetto - Earnest Rubbish
A butt-dial from a ghost as he floats from city to city watching his family live on without him. For fans of Graham Lambkin.

Good stuff I've heard recently not on the big chart:

>Mr. Oizo - Amicalement
Post-drum machine music. Marilyn Manson is "featured" on a track, though it's more of a vocal sample than anything. Silly.
Streamable on youtube.

>God - Final
Plunderphonics that sounds like the internet has died long ago, but its supernova continues to erupt.
https://goregoregore.bandcamp.com/album/final-2
(it says it's two dollars, but that's just because the label ran out of download codes. if you want a copy, wait a couple weeks.)

>Niaw - Marina's Jewels
Glitchy plundershit that sounds like a chopped and screwed tape at normal speed, with a good helping of compression.
https://dinnerdinner.bandcamp.com/album/marinas-jewels

>More ?Sugar - #95EFA1
Nightcore for those unafraid of death.
https://andtime.bandcamp.com/album/95efa1

>Jacob Hutto - Into the Storm.
Indie folk with heavy influences from post-rock. Long, but good.
https://jacobhutto.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-storm

>Swans - Greed
First half is best half, but it's still aggressive and entertaining throughout.
Streamable on youtube (lol)

>The Never Arriving & La Monte Young - Composition 1960 #7

I'm surprised you didn't like le sad kitty album over le sad Russian girl album, maybe you would prefer her Anhedonia album.

Tovarish is a ton of fun on top of being very strange, the singer (a 40 year old mathematician/ethnomusicologist) had some crazy theory about how all world music is directly linked and liked to say that Kazakh folk and American blues weren't very different; the album is influenced by both.

I'm guessing you don't like your avant-folk creepy and ethereal, given the Yarn score.

Surprised that you didn't like Kazma Kazma, since you seem to quite enjoy the proggy medieval sound.
