The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Listening to your new album rn btw, good shit. Thought I would hate the way you used the piano, but it works out in the first track, the whole thing melts together very nicely.

Should I just go through all your older stuff soon or maybe save it for a chart

New thread, well hello everyone!

>Arab Strap - Philophobia
>Slowcore
2.5+
Those first lyrics caught me off guard, but also gave me some sort of idea of what else to expect from an album named Philophobia.
This is depressive and something that I feel I should really like, but at the same time I think it's a grower, so I might eventually end up enjoying it more later on.
Some tracks here are weak (and even lazy) when compared to the rest. Thankfully it still is has some great moments in terms of instrumentation. The lyrics are nice and have a same theme in common.
Favorite tracks: Here We Go, Islands, Not Quite a Yes, Piglet

>Women - Public Strain
>Indie rock
2.0
I had high expectations for this but it just sounds like your average indie rock act, yeah it is somewhat noisy and I like how they mantain that in par with some pop sensibilities that make some tracks stand out for being catchy.
In short it fails in being interesting, half of it is so bland and it's just there as an excuse for it being an LP and not an EP.
At least they could have taken this sound to somewhere else if they would have kept the same formula used in "Eyesore" for longer, that is adding more of the noise and psychedelic elements because those were just a decoration in this album.
Favorite tracks: China Steps, Drag Open, Locust Valley, Eyesore

thats pretty much how i feel about it too. its a damn near perfect lofi indie album for me but some of the experimental parts bring it down. still in my top 10 tho.
also, just ordered the vinyl. feels good.
>>
>>73504290
That was pretty good, overall. don't know if I'll ever love keiji's vocals, eh. I really liked the flow of it, not much felt tedious at all. wish the guitar had made a comeback from the beginning.
I have mixed feelings about the jump scare at 31 minutes. And the alarm beeping previous reminded me of when the space station is about to explode in metroid games. That got a little stressful.
Good dynamic range though and I like how varied the sounds are considering there are 3 players, I imagine everyone running around.

Mac Mall - Illegal Business? (1993)
>west coast hip hop, gangsta rap, mobb music

Good beats, good flow, what else could you want in a rap album? Well, I'd like something shorter with less incredibly blatant braggadocio lyrics, but I can't complain much. Mall is a great rapper, and he's great at making really stupid lines seem effortlessly badass. The production is very g-funk influenced, but the hard-hitting drums and the general grittiness of the sound makes me stomach that a lot better. Pretty essential for any hip hop fan.

Faith No More - The Real Thing (1989)
>funk metal, alternative metal, alternative rock

I bitch and moan about Mike Patton all the time, but I really do like him when he utilizes his voice in a creative manner. Angel Dust, California, and The Director's Cut are all albums where he turns in solid performances, using the full range of his voice to magnificent effect. Here, he stays in the same exact whiny range on every single song and it's fucking maddening. His rapping is godawful, and every single line he sings is like nails on a chalkboard for me. "From Out of Nowhere" is a nice, glammy intro, but everything else is either far too long or far too irritatingly poppy. Angel Dust is leaps and bounds better than this, I don't understand the love here.

Marek Grechuta / Anawa - Korowód (1971)
>progressive folk, poezja śpiewana, folk rock

Some shorter tracks that go nowhere bring the album down a bit, which sucks because the longer, sprawling tracks are masterpieces. The title track especially is a masterpiece, blending together influences from pretty much every genre around, tying everything together with some poetry that, even though I can't understand it, is wonderfully performed. The poetry really does tie together the whole album, even if the actual songs have their low points. I suppose I should dig more into Poezja śpiewana, because it's been a rock solid genre for me.

===letov vs shamepai (again)===

>The United States of America - S/T
>Psych/Experimental Rock

After a short sound collage of American anthems, I'm treated with strange electronic noises and a light ambiguous vocalist... And no guitar, only a bass! There are no guitars in this psychedelic rock album, using traditional drums, synths, and electric harpsichord/violin to lead the tracks. Really cool, for a 1968 release. I agree with rodriguez, in that the sound collage elements are mostly a mess.

And can I also say, fuck RYM users that say you haven't listened to an album unless you listen to it on drugs. I guess I can't listen to psychedelic if I'm not on drugs either

6+/10

>Sweet Trip - Halica
>Dream Pop

Sweet Trip's earliest work? It was ok, but nothing really jumps out at me from this album. Feels like lying down, staring at a bedroom ceiling in midday. Not the most pleasant feeling, but it could be worse. I think that feeling is why I couldn't get into this album: V:C:D balanced its floaty parts with breakbeats, but this album isn't hard-hitting enough to make an impact on me.

6/10

===unnamed trip vs s===

>Glenn Branca - The Ascension
>No Wave, Noise Rock

The cover art is one of those pictures that you initially expect to not fit in any context, but it perfectly suits this album. Something about how the man with the black coat is helplessly held in the grip of Glenn Branca, who seems to be communicating... disgust? Concern? Solemnity? Like he's pulling SOMETHING out from below, which may as well be his music.

I hear hints of Battles, Liturgy, Swans, GY!BA; I hear shoegaze, math and noise rock, noisy ambiance, post-rock.

This is one of those really important albums.

7/10

>Sandy Bull - Fantasia
>American Primitivism

Basho BTFO Bull TBQH

The Carmina Burana Fantasy was a bit absurd in this context, but a hymn like Non Nobis Domine works well with a banjo. Don't care for the other two tracks. The opus of this album, Blend, is must-hear.

>The Birthday Part - Live 1981-82
>Post Punk

Excellent recording quality. Cave sounds way better in his prime.

6/10

>Black Pus - Black Pus 1
>Noise Rock/Free Jazz

Album art is very accurate. Gremlins get a hold of a band's instruments, and have a 26 minute jam session.

Actually, one gremlin. This album was made by one guy, which is pretty good. Still have to be in a specific mood to hear this, though.

5/10

===stick vs rice===

>David Bowie - Blackstar
>Art Rock

The production and jazz influences really get in the way of the first two tracks. Lazarus is where my interest was really grabbed, and partially let go in hearing Sue-- It's clearly calling back to his older electronic work, except his select instrumentalist features to replace D&B.

The Clockwork Orange language in Girl Loves Me is very neat, but does feel more like a gimmick placed over actual mediocre lines. The last track is a gut punch of tacky production choices and a simple repeated line.

I've listened to very little Bowie prior to this. While this album seems to be an interesting stylistic twist following his death, I think the fact that some of these songs were already written prior to this is what held it back from leaving the album's interpretation to be entirely driven by Bowie's death. It makes more sense that Bowie leave a mystical goodbye with his persona, but it does make this feel less genuine than I'd like.

6+/10

>Sirconical - Waving at Planes
>Ambient Techno

A consistent and winding album of techno and light glitch. The way In Your Own Time slowly unravels from downtempo to breakbeat (and back!) pleasantly surprised me.

Compared to something like Blackstar, this does feel very underwhelming. This album seems comfortable sitting in real life, and I never felt like it was taking me anywhere. Just showing me some neat tricks, or casually conversing with me.

6/10

Me'Shell NdegéOcello – Plantation Lullabies
This is an incredibly idiosyncratic mixture of R’n’B, Hip-Hop, Neo-Soul; Jazz and Pop. The genre-blending doesn’t always work (especially the rapping is somewhat clumsy, but I guess it has that early 90s amateurish charm to it). What makes this album stand out is the bass work on here: It features ridiculously great bouncy basslines throughout the whole 1 h runtime. While it definitely has some flaws, I’m surprised that Me'Shell NdegéOcello is so overlooked I haven’t heard from her before I stumbled upon her in a list of Brian Eno’s favorite albums (even though I discovered in retrospect that one of her songs was featured on an episode of The Wire). 6/10

>Radiohead - Man o War

This is one of the greatest songs written by Radiohead. This is also probably the greatest riff Ed O'Brien ever wrote.

The recording is outstanding as well. The strings are heaven-sent. I never thought I wanted them on the track so bad until I heard the actual thing.

The ONLY thing I miss is the "what a nasty surprise" line.

Otherwise, perfect. I'm just overwhelmed with joy.

10-/10

What a lovely surprise.

The St. John Passion, imo, is better than the much highly regarded Mass in B Minor.

David Lynch - Inland Empire
[2006]

Complex, weird, intricated. The plot is pretty easy to follow for the first hour, then it gets fragmented and shattered. I understood some of the themes and keys, like the characters doing cyclical actions in different reincarnations, but it's still hard to get a complete picture in mind. I'll leave that for subsequent viewings, for now I can say I was very amused by the filming style and that I left the film feeling strongly about it (maybe thanks to the amazing credits scene).

>Justin Walter - Lullabies and Nightmares

This is comfier than I expected, there are a handful of beeeeeautiful cuts on here like the title track and the closer. I have a real soft spot that retro brasslike synthesizer tone, and combined with the saxophone it’s just a wondrous experience. It’s hurt by a couple of unsubstantial tracks in terms of melody, as well as me not being a real fan of the overly realistic acoustic sounding drums contrasting with the sharp synthwork.

7/10

>Nicolas Collins - It Was a Dark and Stormy Night

HOLY FUCK

Okay I should say that Rod has a bit of an advantage here because we’re friends and talk a lot. I was hoping Accel would pull ahead but Rod knocked it out of the goddamn park. This album is beautiful, dramatic, mind-bending, and in some odd way honest. The first three tracks are the most normatively beautiful part of the album, with icy glitches of classical recordings flowing like sad electricity. The fourth track is a bit more difficult, but it provides a bit of space between the glitch-drama of tracks previous and the mindblowing fifth track. 27 minutes of the most bombastic experimental classical music being modulated by a friendly and soft male voice telling stories. This is unlike anything I’ve ever heard and made me feel really weird shit.
9/10 but only because I don’t like giving tens on first listen

Chicago Symphony Orchestra / Fritz Reiner performing Béla Bartók - Concerto for Orchestra (1956)
>modern classical, concerto

I'd argue that Bartók works better in a chamber format because this relies a tad too much on the big, dramatic crescendoes and doesn't focus nearly enough on the more subtle parts, and the movements towards the middle aren't that amazing, but to completely deny this is to deny something absolutely beautiful. The first and final movements are both extraordinary pieces, performed perfectly with a perfect grasp on dynamics. Bartók's chamber work is his best, but this is still great.

>Sightings - Through The Panama

It's a very good sign when a modern rock album is directly comparable to it's classic influence. I'm just speculating here, but Through The Panama channels the chaotic free-form energy that Twin Infinitives have wrought upon the noise rock scene in the early 90's. The two albums are similar because both projects have a derivative feel to it (not in a negative way). Unlike other free-form projects that defies structural norms, Twin Infinitives had a very distinct anatomy that was still somehow comparable to its noise rock contemporaries. A user on RYM puts it perfectly.

>It sounds like someone taped together the remnants of a masterpiece after someone dropped a nuclear bomb on it.

Now what does that have to do with Through The Panama? Unlike TI or (in my opinion) it's modern successor, Hairdryer Peace, TTP (structurally) does not seem to be the flagship of deconstruction in it's current scene. It takes influence from such acts, but TTP does not sound like a response to it's setting.

Where TTP excels is not only in what makes it similar to TI, but what makes it inherently different. That would be in it's emotional delivery. One observation, perhaps even a criticism I make about TI is about exactly that. Two drugged up musicians with the intent of subverting noise rock aesthetics and tropes proves to be the perfect catalyst for an amazing album experience. However, the music itself is carried more by its eclecticism and creativity than its emotional content. It is true that the closing track gives the entire double album an ominous contextual mood (as most closing tracks are capable of doing), but there are more humanistic and relatable noise rock albums out there, especially from the scene at that time.

TTP, on the other hand, is an emotional powerhouse throughout. I said before that TTP has a "derivative feel to it". I also said that the album "does not sound like a response to it's setting". You might be wondering how the two statements can be mutually inclusive. Now keep in mind that I added “structurally” in parentheses before the second claim. That is because TTP’s sound is not indebted to any sort of current trend in noise/indie rock of it’s time, or even before it’s time. Sightings seem to be operating in it’s own unique creative bubble. Given that observation, you might ask: How can a project have a derivative feel to it, if it's completely original in it’s concept?

Pathos. Instead of deconstructing the aesthetic and sound of it’s contemporaries, Sightings reiterates the emotional content of noise rock in it’s own unique language. I’ll even go as far as to say that there is a timeless quality to such an act, as emotions are more universal (in music) than aesthetic and sonic trends. TTP is a moving album, and consistently so as well. It takes advantage of noise’s ability to set a constant mood, and that mood is that of dread and longing.

If you are a fan of free form noise rock, or interesting sound experiments, then do yourself a favor and check this one out. I’m also paging Drop to give this one a shot, due to his high scores for Twin Infinitives and Hairdryer Peace.

8/10

(Would love some feedback on this review. This might be the first thing I upload to RYM and I’m afraid of making a fool out of myself. Also Imperial review coming soon).

Hey boys. First day here let me know what you think

>Japandroids - Post-Nothing
Not too impressed, especially after hearing a lot of positive reception for this band's whole catalog. 30 minutes of power chord driven noise rock dipping into some lo-fi recording, Pavement comes to mind as a superior comparison. It's not bad, it has some nice energy
and the latter half of the album has some of more memorable hooks and riffs, particularly in Heart Sweats and Crazy / Forever. Pretty forgettable otherwise, I don't see myself returning to it.
6/10

>SpaceGhostPurrp - Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6 (1991)
Grimy as fuck crunk outta Memphis. Production wise, it's fucking atrocious but for this release in particular it
adds to the overall aesthetic feel of the album rather then standing out as a flaw. The tags and samples that pop
up on about every track are mixed in horribly however and definitely detracts from my enjoyment. It's clear
how much influence the record has had on 2010s, hip hop, particularly in the recent underground, but just six years later it already feels like listening is done for historical purposes rather then pure enjoyment. Despite this,
it's an undeniably fun album in an ignorant sort of way, I could see myself revisiting some of the tracks on here.
6.5/10

Yanka - Sold!
The instrumentation is nice enough if not terribly unique, electric guitar pushed to the back and her singing is good and all, but I feel like I am missing out on a significant part of the experience by not fully understanding the lyrics, which seem important to this kind of music. I found some translations online, most were incomplete, but those that were intact seemed to be very well written, lyrically.
3-

Yanka - sad kot album
Same thing as with the other one
3-

Kazma-Kazma - some russian shit or something idk
This is certainly interesting. The wind sections don’t seem to be a gimmick and are included well. It almost reminds me of Magma or Shub Niggurath with these strong rhythm sections and winding winds, very progressive for an album of… whatever genre this is.
3.5

Ryuichi Sakamoto - async
4

Richard Dawson - Peasant
Lyrically, this album details a number of first person vignettes in a dystopian medieval Britain with magic, war, debauchery, demons, and love. Musically, the string focused instrumentation and choral chants help to realize this neo-medieval atmosphere. It really is almost indescribable, a perfect combination of harmony and discord.
4.5+

Exuma - Exuma II
A bit more eclectic than Exuma’s first album, it is of about the same quality. Weird spoken word bit which for whatever reason is about or dedicated to Paul Simon. More in your face voodoo themes, less ankle bells.
4+

Dr. John - Gris-Gris
I imagine this is how everyone from nawlins talks, mumble something about voodoo and gumbo then fall on their face dead drunk while some soulful stuff plays in the back.

sorry i still havent done abba yet. i still havent been in the mood for it. it'll probably be the last album i do desu
>Daniel Johnston - Songs of Pain
This seriously hit the spot when I listened. Daniel Johnston is an absolute master at expressing himself and his emotions through his words, his piano, and his delivery. I especially love how parts of this album come off as a little more lighthearted and humorous. Still, I felt a lot that Johnston said on here, and it's an album I'll definitely be returning to several times again.
4.0+
>Brave Little Abacus
I love how mathy this whole thing was. It's emo, but I honestly had fun with it. And the emotional power was still there and present, too. Same reason I love Cap'n Jazz, really.
3.5+
Kevin Drumm - Imperial Distortion
Tags on rym include: "lonely, cold, sombre, atmospheric." And it definitely is all of these things, but the drones themselves didn't appeal to me too much. It was still a good experience, but I found myself trailing off a lot and losing focus. Thats probably just me being bad at listening to music, but I feel like if the album is drone and it doesn't totally engulf me, that means its not the right drone for me. I'd still recommend it tho, there's some seriously good and pretty parts on this
3.0+
>Klaus Schulze - "X"
pretty hypnotizing, pretty enjoyable. i dont have too much to say about this, im just glad i finally heard it.

>Richard Dawson - Peasant
Maybe you guys raised my expectations too high for this, but I was honestly disappointed. I wasn't expecting like the next First Utterance or anything, but I was expecting some pretty weird, untamed, avant-folk stuff. Granted, a lot of it was very weird, but most of it felt tame to me, and honestly a ton of it bored me. There were some very nice moments scattered throughout, which did save its score, but idk, I'm not feeling it as much.
3.0-

and Modern Lovers is good! if yr into proto-punk a la TVU, Stooges, and that type, you'll probably dig it.

I'll never get sick of this chart frankly, I haven't gotten so much enjoyment out of something in such a long time. I'll most certainly make it through the chart even if it takes years. I've heard of the mystical Stereolab, how intrigued I am by them. I've listened to the Cavern of Anti-Matter who released Void Beats/ Invocation Trex a year of so ago, one of my favourite releases of 2016. It's currently a side project of Stereolab's Tim Gane, so naturally the latter interests me a lot. That being said I have no idea as to what Stereolab would actually sound like, judging from their album covers and the name of the band I'd assume it to be minimalist electronic krautrock a la Neu! with less emphasis on drums and greater concentration of harsher glitch-inspired samples. I don't know how correct that is.

>>73518680
Got it on now, thank-you anon, this is really comfy!
>>
>>73518885

this one should sound really good to on paper, but there was something really off putting about it to me. usually i am all for jazzy pop and extreme kitsch but i was really uncomfortable and thats definitely no good.

>letov recs Kazma Kazma - Пляcки тpyбaдypoв
this one is rreeaallyy awesome. i like it more than the other kazma kazma album i had heard before which was more minimalism-y and this one is more rocky and interesting. its a really unique sound. reminds me of guernica which is pretty much the best thing you can strive to be. could definitely see it being a 4.5 in the future. great rec!

it is personally offensive to me. i live in a state where it is immensely popular, and my family has had a looot of it in their lifetimes. i also knew a different family that literally only drank dr pepper. not exeggerating. they had an extra fridge to completely stock up all the way full with dr peppers so i associate it with trashy life styles. i've always hated the taste of it.

>The Flashbulb - Opus At The End Of Everything (2012)
Like the rest of his 20+ track albums, a lot of the songs are short and don't go anywhere. There's a lot of cinematic filler which probably could have been cut, and none of the songs particularly stand out. The end result sounds pleasant on the surface, but is surprisingly unengaging for a Flashbulb album. I can still enjoy this kind of thing, but for others this might be a disappointment. 3+
