MUSIC

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
>Rock, Punk, Spoken Word

The "looping record" effect at the end of the first track is neat. A simple keyboard and gritty drums populate a compressed song that sounds like it's being heard from a distant radio.

The NEXT track, The Gift, has a delightful horror story, which the band's playing allows to be told in a matter-of-fact way. Lady Godiva's Operation details a surgical operation, from what first sounds like it'd be a description of a promiscuous woman-- transitioning into the light strums of Here She Comes Now.

To put it in the simplest terms, the sunny guitars and drums of the band are a framework for their darker messages. The album cover itself seems to portray this as well: simple white lettering on darkness.

I Heard Her Call My Name is more explicit with this presentation, and the lead guitar rips through the steady eight notes of the set. Sister Ray goes on for longer than I'd like, but had some neat noisiness

This is probably the first punk album I've I decently enjoyed. Maybe because it retains melodic song structures, making the songs and their content itself more memorable. And the image of horrified parents hearing this some 50 years ago. What it seems to lack was a real direction behind all its songs, but I guess that's a part of the punk aesthetic.

>Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love
>Singer/songwriter, Folk

Cohen's voice and need to sort of droop his words makes me weary...

At least, I WOULD have wrote that if I didn't realize I was halfway through listening to Songs of Love and Hate, not Songs of Leonard Cohen. Which made hearing Cohen being much more gentle on Suzanne a greater pleasure.

Compared to the American Primitivism I've heard from previous albums, I'm glad Cohen allowed the backing orchestration to stay. I imagine without it, Cohen would have been a bit too lonely with his deep storytelling. Gives them a sense of importance, beyond "love song."

That sense of importance is important, because Cohen was a poet. The miniscule clockwork band that passes on Sisters Of Mercy, the touch of strings and electric guitar on Master Song, the plain female choruses of Suzanne and So Long, Marianne. Easily enjoyable, while Cohen weaves his watercolour tales.

These aren't wildly colorful watercolour tales, keep in mind: there's a bleakness that hangs over some of the tracks, and Cohen knows this. Sometimes it really is just a look on love (Hey, Thats no way to say goodbye), but others seem to calmly wander and explore Cohen's memories (Teachers, One of Cannot Be Wrong). Master Song left the biggest impression on me, for toying with the theme of servant and master.

To sum up the futile feelings of the entire album, from Suzanne:

>And the sun pours down like honey
>On our lady of the harbour
>And she shows you where to look
>Among the garbage and the flowers
>There are heroes in the seaweed
>There are children in the morning
>They are leaning out for love
>And they will lean that way forever

I don't really have much to say about Motoharu Sano's someday. It's another okay city pop album, though this one features more influence from 80's funk and Bruce Springsteen than The Beach Boys. Maybe I'm just getting fatigued, but this album is pretty much the definition of average. Not really much else to say.

5

Another good album found! Yumi Arai's Hiko-ki Gumo is some pretty damn good jazzy folk pop, with beautiful vocals throughout. I'm kind of tired while writing this, so I'm not going to go into a whole lot of detail, but this is a well-composed, well-performed pop record that I am definitely going to come back to.

The Jacks' Vacant World is an amalgam of western psychedelic rock and pop tropes and ideas that somehow manages to better and more interesting than a lot of 60's psychedelic music I've heard. It features Doors-like organ playing, Phil Spector girl group rhythms, bluesy surf guitars, and Eric Burdon-esque vocals, and is able to synthesize all of these elements into a collection of mellow psych dirges. The second and fifth tracks are my personal favorites, though I can't really think of any songs on here that detract from the album. This is definitely the best new (for me) album I've listened to from this list so far, and it seems to be an incredibly influential album in a Japanese rock after doing some research, so it's spot on this list is certainly deserved.

>Nara Leao - Dez Anos Depois
Meh, kinda boring, though some songs are pleasant enough

>LUM - Mista Thug Isolation
This hits hard, but it doesn't quite reach the qualities of Uneven Compromise, imo mainly due to its length.

>1st Degree & Deep Sleep - Mental Prison
Very good memphis rap, gritty and hard.

>Art Ensemble of Chicago - Urban Bushmen
Absolutely stellar. Amazing live performance, incredible variety; just very good stuff.

>Fred Frith - Clearing
Not as original as Guitar Solos but still very pleasant improv stuff, never really jarring or anything and actually quite melodic.

>Haydn Cello Concertos
good, idk

>Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
uhhh nice enough, not really my type of minimalism. Somehow the progression doesn't feel adventurous enough or sth

>exuma - s/t
uhh, not enough cuban stuff, too much rock i guess

>Eberhard Weber - Colours of Chloe

wait, you seriously haven't heard we insist yet? it's great

narcotic story and for philip guston are also great, used to dislike third but it's actually good, as is smile session, another green world, and bcd (altho it's overrated tbqh). oh yeah and emotion is actually good

Oh man, this is an awesome chart dude. There's some really tight jazz albums on here. ESP, We Insist!, Roll Call and Maiden Voyage are some of my favorites. Smile & Either/Or are pretty great too

Smile and Either/Or are two of my favorites, but I'd be very surprised if you got much out of them.

I'll be super curious about what you think of The Way Ahead and Straight Life. My Guess is you'll think much higher of the former.

Mac Demarco - This Old Dog (2017)
>Indie Pop

I mean, it’s Mac Demarco so you basically already know what you’re in for. Nice cozy tracks, okay songwriting and a mellow atmosphere. On this album, Mac seems to take a more serious approach, with songs like “My Old Man” and “Moonlight On the River” completely disregarding his notorious quirky/goofy schtick. There’s more synth work on this and I actually think I prefer it over his typical guitar work. Some of the synths/guitars have that dragging, “warped VCR” kinda sound that vaporwave and indie music has picked up on recently. On here it works pretty well but as usual, it gets old after a few songs. The middle stretch starts to blend together with similar melodies, etc but it remains fairly cozy all throughout. I think this a step in the right direction though, even if it’s a very gradual one. Synths are more Mac’s style and while he may never make an amazing album, I like the fact that he’s trying to mix it up and ditch his old persona.

3/5

Twinz - Conversation (1995)
>G-funk

Twinz were a duo (duh) that worked heavily with Warren G and were most notably featured on his hit “This DJ”. They sound quite similar to Warren and are actually pretty indistinguishable from each other. Honestly, they aren’t great lyricists or anything but they hold it down on most of the tracks. Warren G provides the production on this album and it’s nice as hell. Definitely the best part of the album. His brand of G funk hits a nice middle ground between Dre & Quik’s, with smooth, buttery beats and a little hint of a party atmosphere. Nothing hits too hard and the basslines are consistently beautiful. It’s a little too smooth/poppy for me at times but there’s something so damn cool about this era of west coast hip-hop.

3

Also bumped the Marciano to 4.5 cause I love it

Ben Watt - North Marine Drive
Nice, mellow indie pop record. "On Box Hill", "Some Things Don't Matter", and especially "Waiting Like Mad" are beautiful, but the rest was just sort of boring, idk.

Mr. Bungle - Mr. Bungle
Okay yeah it's kinda bad. Why are the songs so damn long?? What's weird is that the 6-7 minute songs seemed like the longest, while the 10 minute ones didn't seem to drag as much. Most of the time it seemed like they were deploying weirdness to cover up the lack of musical ideas, which isn't always bad as long as it's entertaining. And it sometimes was, but this was far too long to ever want to listen to again even for the few good moments here. Also the ska influences were annoying as hell.

what to do now???

the bill wells octet meets lol coxhill - textile vinyl serie 01

very lovely avant jazz. it's structured in a way where there is a more lo-fi band playing in the back and then a higher recording quality instrument comes in and solos on top of it. i'm not sure if the backing band is an external sample or their own playing edited like one, but it's very disorienting and i really like it. there's a really neat short version of The Williams Sisters, a song that appears on his maher shalal hash baz collab GOK eight years from the release of this album

what should i hear next?

Now this is some goddamn pop music! Tatsuro Yamashita's Spacy is a passionate, wonderfully cheesy city pop album that pushes all the right buttons for me. The songs range from baby-making soul, to cool funk, to jazzy piano pop, and it's all done with such charisma and wonderful composition that it's impossible not to love. The highlights include Candy, a cool, Marvin Gaye-esque soul track, the final song on the album, Solid Slider, a long but never boring funk jam, and アンブレラ... which is a genuine masterpiece. It's hard to describe what makes it so good, honestly, but trust me when I say it's as perfect as this kind of music can get. This has a high chance of being a new favorite with repeated listens, and I'm definitely going to explore more of Yamashita's work. The two best albums so far (that I haven't already heard) back to back, huh? Who woulda thunk it!

8+

chris††† - Social Justice Whatever (2017)

i think that especially since more and more scientific and artistic approaches to memes has come around, the use of them within serious works has become more taboo and risky than ever. just because something isn't 100% new doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon or released in a more intriguing context. see: the concept of musical genres in general.
i'm in a discord with the creator of this album is in. i have never directly communicated with him. he posts not very often, but consistently, 3 or 4 times per day, he'll post some shit like a tostino's commercial in there and never comment on it. i feel like that captures the vibe of this album quite well.
these samples are mostly memes, a lot of them being very well known. what takes me about this album is how they are presented without visual aid (unless you do watch the video version). john asks you to detached yourself from your context of the music, distorting samples beyond recognition. this is not a contest to see how many hot memes you can check off. this is the forced reassignment of context to things you already know exist.

this approach isn't necessarily new, i'm not going to argue that.

i will argue that this, similar to No Lives Matter, this is the purest form of vaporwave. it gives new life to samples you probably already know, allowing you to reflect on an era gone bye and appreciate the new sounds that were created. in this way, it's probably one of the most effective vaporwave albums of all time since, to be fair, it's safe to say that most vaporwave producers did not grow up during the peak of Diana Ross and Toto's popularity.
all of the lyrics on the bandcamp page for this record are presented exactly as they are heard in order on the album, with no indication outside of prior context where one sample ends and another begins. this helps the album's place as a collection of sounds that are blurred into one new potion due to the fading of old memory and the transformation of the samples themselves. now there are a lot of obviously humorous moments on the record, but they are balanced in spades by the reflective, vast soundscapes that compliment then.
you can take it as a joke or one giant shitpost, and that's fine, but this album is not in any way a cop out. i grew up as the shithead who bred on the samples used on this album, but i could still listen to any second of this and safely say that those sounds were made by chris†††.

this is one of the most sincere records i've heard in a long time.

current AOTY/10

I ended up liking this album a lot more than I expected to. I'm aware of X Japan, having vaguely known them for a long time before watching the documentary about them, We Are X, pretty recently. The story behind the band was interesting, and the movie itself was pretty good, but the bombastic, symphonic metal that I heard throughout the film wasn't much to my taste at all. But, after listening to Blue Blood... I was happy to find that it was a pretty fun album, and certainly accessible to someone, like me, who never listens to stuff like this. There are times were it grows too self-indulgent, sure, but for the most part it's filled with energetically performed heavy metal that I actually ended up enjoying. The song Xclamation is my favorite, due to it being actually sort of experimental and post-punky. That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the more 'traditional' stuff on the album, Kurenai and X being other highlights. But there are certainly times when the songs grow too ridiculous and overstay their welcome, like the monstrously indulgent eleven minute Rose of Pain. But, overall, it's a fun record, and knowing how important X Japan are to Japanese popular music, it certainly deserves to be here.

Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog (2017)
>singer/songwriter, indie pop, folk pop

DeMarco has abandoned his jangly, "jizz-jazz" sound here, replacing it with a more acoustic, laid-back, mature sound. I like the maturity he displays here, his vocals are great and super smooth, and the acoustic guitar work is awesome. The songs are pretty damn bland though. I still like the title track a lot, and "Moonlight on the Water" is genuinely stunning, but the rest ranges from bland folk pop to boring as sin retreads of "Chamber of Reflection". I appreciate that he's changing he's style up, but he's not doing that in a great way.

2.0+

Animal Collective - Meeting of the Waters (2017)
>psychedelic folk, neo-psychedelia

Triumphant return to form for AnCo. Completely removed from the sugary, saccharine pop of Painting With and more akin to the band's glory days of Sung Tongs and Campfire Songs, this whole EP is filled with meditative, slow-burning psych folk songs that all work quite well. Avey's vocals are pretty vanilla, and the two longer tracks tend to drone on and on with little tact, and I probably only like this so much because it's cleaning my palette after Painting With, but this is pretty damn great.

3.0

Slowdive - Slowdive (2017)
>dream pop, shoegaze

About as good as I expected, so pretty good but nothing great. Doesn't recapture the magic of Souvlaki, but who was expecting it to? It's a fine dream pop album on it's own right that stands its ground against its predecessors without bettering them. The sound here is like a mixture of their three albums, the more straightforward pop sound of Just for a Day, the dense shoegaze of Souvlaki, and the ambient pop of Pygmalion. The ambient pop is the weakest link here, I don't like Pygmalion to begin with and I certainly don't like a watered down version of it. The shoegazey, wall of sound tracks are pretty great though, the opener "Slomo" being a major standout. Pretty solid record.

s-sonemic...?

Christian Vander - Tristan et Iseult (1974)
>zeuhl, film score

Pretty much a watered-down version of Magma. Vander is already Magma's leader and driving creative force, but the maximalist, exhilirating nature of their stuff is lost here, the sound of the tracks are more simple and less ambitious, but the structure is probably the most ambitious Magma-related thing out there. It's a score, so this makes sense, but the album is structured like a suite: many themes are commonly returned to and there's a common sound that links every track together. The cuts between tracks are very sloppy, though, and like I said neither the songwriting nor the sound of this record are on par with Magma's best. It's still damn fun, with some great instrumental work, so I can't fault it too much.

PAGING FISH

I approached Sister Ray again, because I wanted to make sure it wasn't just the mindset I was in listening to it some two nights ago. Listened to it twice.

Nah. White Light/White Heat is still a decent 6. A step forward for its time, but it still feels drawn out, one song with one chord. I can see how it differentiates itself from something like an improv session by not settling into one groove or pattern for too long like the last improv rock album I heard (EthyBoy's recc, Causa Sui - Summer Sessions Vol 3), but it still sounds like it could have ended at any point after the first 5 minutes.

Scaruffi calling it a track that rivals Beethoven(??)'s symphonies and Coltrane? I haven't heard enough of either to make that call, but I'm leaning towards no.

Scaruffi is a historian, after all, not a "music fan" as he calls it. And this record/track is obviously of historical significance, coming out 50 YEARS ago and still standing out today, not even as The Velvet Underground's most noted record. But I think it's just ok as a 17 minute rock track.

didn't wear on me as much as minutemen anyway
>>
>>72613837
talk to me when im not drunk but Scaruffi is a dumpass but sister ray is still incredible.

its probably just because i like noise and progeressive repetition but yeah shit's good.

>Luomo - Vocalcity
seductive, slightly glitchy house music that really gets me grooving, but tbf it's not fit for album listening. there's nothing bad on there, but it's really long (70 minutes?) and consists of lengthy, repetitive (well duuhh) tracks, which makes it hard to sit through it in one go. repetition is not a bad thing, but these tracks would definitely work better as singles or in a DJ mix.
i liked it, but the album format doesn't do the material justice.

>Fridge - Happiness
Kieran Hebden's pre-Four Tet band. Although I've always viewed Four Tet's early material as more hiphop oriented, after hearing this album Four Tet starts to sound almost post-rock to me.
Happiness is very obviously a post-rock album (kinda in the vein of Do Make Say Think), yet it contains all the hallmarks of a Tet record: jazzy drumming, cluttered/glitched/folky acoustic instrumentation and a rather peaceful atmosphere. the only real difference i can make out is that this is mostly (cut-up?) live instrumentation, whereas Tet's work is mostly sample-based.
the record itself is really solid too; it creates a rather comfy atmosphere (somewhat reminiscent of The Books in places), presents some interesting instrumental ideas (especially in the treatments of the acoustic instrumentation) and is varied enough, thanks to the pretty wide variety of instrumentation used throughout.
it's nice, check it out.

静香 [Shizuka] - 天界のペルソナ (Tenkai no Perusona)
[1994]
>psychedelic rock

Since we're talking about japanese post rock a Les Rallizes Dénudés comparison is inevitable, but what Shizuka does here is more toned down, less noisy and frankly more boring. Sure, for the first three tracks it works, and the female vocals work quite well, but at a certain point I stopped caring and the buildup and release in the middle of the record started being lame and all that came afterwards was lame too.

Boy they asked for it... I whip out the whiteboard and give them a full lecture on the DAILYAQ. I have a pre-made lesson plan and everything. We talk about the risks and rewards of Fishmans-posting, meme trends, and the current (you) market. Is it a more effective strategy to go for many low quality (you)s or seek out the high quality (you)s in rare stretches? Who's the newest tastemaker? Fish, Nat, Nyar? Is it a new trip? One thing for sure, it's never Woolite.

One free lesson for you friends: I always emphasize obscurity over quality. Why review the newest Mac Demarco album when you could just talk about a Japanese noise release from 1972? They won't even be able to find it, do you think they'll be able to shit on you for your review? You could listen to a monk chanting for 45 minutes and give it a 5/5, claiming it's a fun little funk album with flutes and bongos. Jokes on em motherfucker. They'll never even know... the modern world is a marvel sometimes.

There's a quiz at the end of course and anyone who gets less than an 85% is kicked out of my room and we don't speak about music ever again. So, y'know pretty standard stuff
