Define "proper". Everyone has aptitudes, but in my experience I played piano for years before learning guitar and guitar was very easy in comparison. I recently bought a classical guitar and am starting to learn fingerstyle because it's a more comparable challenge, and also more fun in general. But your experience may vary depending on the extent of your background, and what you're trying to do.

I have a BJ3. Its great for southern rock kinda stuff, CCR and skynyrd... but for anything else you really have to load it up with pedals... which is fine, because its clean and takes pedals well... but the bassbreaker... Oh how I want one.... The BJ can do what a bassbreaker can if you buy some pedals, but out of the box, I have to say bassbreaker.

The only issue I know of with it, is the fx loop hums a bit, but besides it seems good to go.

>>69692875
My hands are kinda smallish, so I've always used that finger. You'll just get used to it, like how the strings used to hurt your fingers and you had to "push hard" to get a clean note. You're still pushing as hard, it's just easier to do
>>
>>69693354
I just learnt from messing around by myself. I can explain to you how I go about modes. Basically I just alter the major (Ionian) and natural minor (Aeolian) scales, the main two scales you probably already know.

Dorian is just Aeolian with a major (raised) 6th
Phrygian is Aeolian with a flattened second
Mixolydian is Major scale with a flattened 7th
Lydian is Major scale with a raised 4th
And I don't really touch locryan

If you know your regular major and minor scales then just try switching to modes by just altering the note. What also helped me was taking a minor pentatonic and adding in the extra notes too.

Minor pentatonic to dorian is just adding in the regular 2nd and the major 6th

guitars and gats thread?
>>
>>69693354

It's a complex topic. Best bet for the details on specifics in depth is to find books on music theory for guitar. Not 'guitar for beginners' type books as those won't go in to a great level of detail, the purpose being entry level introduction to the instrument. I mean theory and scale structure; preferably as related to guitar but that isn't strictly necessary. The benefit of music theory and standard notation is that it is universal across all instruments.
>>
>>69693322

Everybody has to learn this lesson at some point along the way. Unfortunately some never do and fill their lives with all manner of tonewoods to try to fill the gap. A good musician can make anything sound good so long as the instrument functions (stays more or less in tune).

Just start using your pinky. One finger per fret, use your pinky, learn to bend with it and it just gets easier and easier until it's just as strong as any other finger.

I can do full barres with my pinky now, because I've mad it a point over 10+ years of playing to use it.

I am the same way nothing wrong with that. Sometimes just the raw amp sound is all you need. I once played possum kingdom by the toadies through a 1970's Marshall stack with just the Marshall overdrive and I was put into a trance it was awesome.
>>

Pretty much the same. I only own an overdrive, wah, and delay.

Learn the names of the intervals, learn all the basic vocabulary that is generally associated with theory, and most importantly keep playing, understanding theory comes a lot easier when you have a familiarity with your instrument. Although I'm no theory expert by any margin, what used to confuse the hell out of me when I first started turned out to be relatively simple. Also remember that the major scale is the most important scale to know in and out.
>>
>>69693354
G# dorian is f# major/ionian

Ill do it in C cause i hust woke up and cant think

C-I-Ionian/Major
D-II-Dorian
E-III-Phyrgian
F-IV-Lydian
G-V-Mixolydian
A-VI-Aeolian/Natural Minor
B-VII-Locrian

Its the same scale, basically the focus just shifts for modes. For D dorian itll be C major but youll center around D and its harmonies.

I currently have an old Pod 2.0 and I wanted to buy a looper pedal. I was looking at different options and i discovered this recently released boss GT 1 (pic related). It Is about the same price as most decent loopers, so i thought that it might be a good deal and overall update from old pod amp modelling wise aswell.
It sucks that I cant test it, because they dont sell these anywhere near where I live, but based on youtube videos you can get some pretty decent tones. Also the editing software for PC seems legit.

I know you guys probably get this question too often, but I'm thinking of getting into guitar.

I'm 21 and I've never played an instrument. I have basically zero musical talent. I'm watching my buddy's house for a couple of weeks, and he has a guitar. Do you all think that's long enough to get good enough to justify buying my own? What should I start with? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

absolutely. i remember my first few weeks of learning guitar and really falling in love with the instrument. assuming you have a smart phone, download both a metronome and tuner app. i use datuner (lite) when I don't have access to my snark. there are a lot of online resources for beginners, do what the anon above me suggested. google can also be your friend.

don't be afraid to experiment or try to learn things by ear when you get comfortable enough. just remember to use the metronome when you're actually practicing.

Anyone use stickers or something else for tiny side fretboard markers?

Stop looking at the fretboard when you play like an actually guitar player and you wouldn't need those.

The only effect I use is reverb on leads, that's it. I've gone so long without effects that using them now hurts.
