hm yeah, i only saw him that one time at thunder/dance tunnel. tickets actually sold out in 3 mins lmao. so me and my friends were forced to queue for like 1 and a half hours. but we got in just as he was coming on at like 1am and he was on till 5am (grand central being his last tune of the night) so it was all good really

despite being hated by all the lovers of ‘real music’ or whatever, i honestly enjoy today’s ‘lame dubstep/brostep/EDM’ songs and find the self-reflectiveness of some of them quite interesting.

let’s think for a second. selfie, the number one ‘club banger’ of last year was a song that was making fun of the very consumers of it and the culture surrounding that type of music - yet it was never completely ironic, in fact, very ‘post-ironic’ in its presentation. skism’s experts, one of the most popular dubstep songs of last year, was about the ‘critics’ of the music type it is a part of, and was structured in a way (sample+drop+bass+sample+drop+bass) that was surely to be criticised even more by said critics. knife party, one of the most hated bands by ‘real’ ‘dubstep’ connoisseurs (what the fuck is ‘real’ in terms of music genres anyway? i haven’t seen that much fuss even when emocore went from intellectual friendly to mtv friendly) has a song called internet friends, an EDM track, making fun of creepy Facebook friends, with the sample of the song being completely read by a digital voice, a very cyberpunk idea.

even more so, some of the aspects of today’s dubstep (should i say drop-centered edm music? d’n’b? 2000s club bangerz? whatever.) is even mre culturally interesting: dubstep samples practically everything. a simple google search can make you find songs that uses samples from arabic traditional music, african rhytms, early trap-rap samples, lots of r’n’b vocals (a verrry serious and strong African American influence is always present), metal music, rock, cellos, classical music, every pop song, memorable film scenes, commercials…

the very reason it is not taken seriously and deemed ‘not real music’ is the fact that it encompasses each and every type of music into the form of samples, the simplest digital form of sounds, and creates pieces that is based off of them that aims at the most basic emotions that can be created by music by using an interesting, 2000s cyber pop sensibility: you wait, you heighten your senses as the drop comes closer, drop comes in, you jump/get excited/whatever. a very simplistic,compressed, digital version of popular music. It definitely raises some very interesting questions about today’s musical sensibilities, and all of the people who dismiss it as ‘not real music’ and ‘not intellectual enough’ is frequently missing this point.
