oh, sorry! I've posted along with lots of other people in /noise/ before and it was encouraged. I have no problem deleting and not posting here
>>
>>49798437
The OP is encouraging it, and people are going to post their stuff anyway. What we need is some ground rules.

1. Post a link to your project no more than once per thread.
2. Make sure your music fits firmly into the category of noise.
3. Be active in the discussion of the thread rather than simply dropping a link and leaving like an asshole.
4. Give feedback to others when posting your own project.

Sometimes all of the soundcloud and bandcamp stuff can get annoying, but the back and forth between us amateurs here has been very constructive at times, and is a major factor in /noise/'s recent explosion of activity. Stick to these rules and we'll have a fruitful thread. :)

Merzbeat is what got me into noise
>>
>>49799638
Those rules sound nice in theory but they're worth fuck-all if nobody abides by them.
Soundcloud/BC threads started out with similar rules and look at them now.
I think that what would make sense the most is for that /mu/tant noise artists image that's floating around to get posted in each of these threads and periodically updated, and for the artists themselves to only post links to their pages when they've made something significant.
>>
>>49799763
maybe the OP could post it as the second post in the thread?
>>
>>49799806
Yeah, that would be fine.
>>
>>49799763
I know it's possible. Before the past few threads, there was a string of threads where everyone did follow those rules, and without being prompted to. /noise/ was a friendly community where anyone could get feedback if they were polite.
This would be different if we were discussing a different genre of music, but the diy nature of noise music not only facilitates but demands discussion relating to amateurs and professionals alike.
>>
To get things back on track, what are the best noise music labels to follow? I need additional avenues for finding noise music besides these threads.

Bad Noise: Stuff that goes KSSSSH without any tonal, rhythmic, or timbral changes.

Good Noise: A variety of aesthetic approaches that may be harsh, psychedelic, beautiful, entrancing, or all of the above, which are composed/performed/improvised in such a way that there are changes within the overall structure of the piece that keep it interesting to listen to.

Quagga Curious Sounds (run by Zebra Mu)
American Tapes (John Olson's label. Insanely limited releases unfortunately)
Alchemy (classic "japanoise" label, probably released some of the most important stuff)
>>
Just a question I wanted to ask. Does /noise/ enjoy or agree with the taboo subjects (sexual or otherwise) often used in noise and power electronics.
>>
>>49801675
I love concept as a part of music and as a part of noise. The aesthetics are very important and give off atmosphere. Regardless of whether or not it's "taboo", it's concept, and that's cool and a part of art. Unfortunately, if you were to bring up Nicole 12 or Exploring Jezebel to somebody, you're going to get weird looks since not many can understand that people can like things or explore a concept and not be "weird", criminally minded, etc..
>>
>>49801675

I think it depends wholly on how it's handled. When themes/aesthetics are based around taboo subjects with the aim of being transgressive I find it falls flat, mostly because it's all been done before.

To use PE as an example I find Slogun's stuff to be engaging, interesting and not gimmicky. On the other hand stuff like Genocide Lolita comes off as stilted and boring.

There was a period in the late 2000s where you couldn't roll your eyes without seeing another thousand noise releases about porn, packaged in porn (I have a Filthy Turd CD-r that has cuttings from a piss-porn mag as it's art) or made using samples of porn. It became par for the course, though the flip side of that is when you have people exploring genuine obsessions (Mikko Aspa's projects tend to centre on perversion and, judging by his porn collection that he used to post about, I don't doubt that his use of these themes is genuine.)

Though I do actually like Deathpile's G.R. despite the lyric "I'm addicted to prostitutes like some men are to alcohol".
>>
>>49801675
Not a fan of all the sexual/gore/criminal stuff, but I can enjoy all the other themes or aesthetics. Like >>49801742 said they give the atmosphere and sometimes the whole personnality to a release. Like Nyodene D's "Atop Masada" that "explores the facets of suicide, honor and sacrifice in the context of the Roman Empire's siege of Masada." A recommended listen for getting into PE.

>Bad Noise: Stuff that goes KSSSSH without any tonal, rhythmic, or timbral changes
>not liking HNW
>>
>>49801675
I'll be honest, i'm not really a fan of the bdsm/murder/rape stuff most of the time. I can't really think of many artist who incorporate these themes maturely or with any hint of subtlety, and a lot of times they seem aim to be the most "daring" artists in noise. Same goes with putting gore and fetish stuff on their album covers. To me it's almost laughable and often makes the artist appear uninspired.

Meh, what do I know.

>>49802365

>>
>>49801675
I wouldn't say I enjoy or agree with those subjects and I don't go out of my way to listen only to the scummiest noise out there, but I don't take issue with artists exploring those subjects either.
Though I do think that a lot of mediocre artists use that sort of imagery and concepts as a crutch in order to distract people from their material just not being very good at all, and a lot of them also use it because they think it's what you're supposed to be doing if you're making this stuff.
I appreciate artists who don't force themselves to stick with these subjects once they lose interest in them(Ramleh, Prurient, Loke Rahbek etc.) and I appreciate artists whose interest in these subjects is genuine, for better or worse. Though even then, the main reason why I listen to artists like Macronympha or Grunt or Bizarre Uproar is still just the fact that I like the sounds they come up with.

And it's always worth remembering that you don't have to agree with someone's lifestyles and beliefs in order to appreciate their art.

God I hate him. Interviewed him for a documentary I was putting together on the Glasgow "scene". He was really pompous. Also Volcanic Tongue (his shop) were selling a Wolf Eyes c10 for £10. The entire crew disliked him, but they got on fine with other interviewees.

Also 'Hypnagogic Pop'? Really?

Finally: He threw a fucking strop when Testsuo released 'David Keenan is my Dick'. Guy's a tit. He also described Richard Youngs as "avant-primitive folk noise".

He was also born in the same town as me :(

Why is that most people who dislike Pharmakon bash her and give her a "babby noise"-tag, idgi. I'm listening to lots of noise, from harsh noise to mellow drones and just because she's not on the harsher spectrum and uses more rhythmic and atmospheric elements, it makes her music bad? I mean she's just doing her own thing.
People also argue, that she's easy to get into and THEREFORE it's "entry-level", but I think she just got popular, because people thought "hey, that's a girl, that can't be too harsh?" and checked her out. Musically those same people could've just looked into some Prurient-stuff or so and would've probably liked it as well. She just got lucky; for me, it's not particularly her music, which made her so popular.
Enough rambling... What do you guys think?
>>
>>49805359
I think it's because they have nothing better to say about her music.

Her popularity is probably a huge factor as to why more people have checked her out more than other female fronted noise-related artists, but she's not bad. She's not spectacular either but I have high hopes for her new album

>>
>>49805359
She's on a fashionable indie label, she's relatively well-known and she's appreciated by some people who otherwise have very little interest in the genre. All of these things make her an easy target for deliberately obscure elitists.
Prurient, Wolf Eyes, Kevin Drumm etc. get similar grief among some people for the same reasons, despite having plenty of DIY and artistic credibility.
Though for what it's worth I've never actually seen anyone shit on Pharmakon outside of /mu/, she seems to be pretty well-regarded on noise forums and whatnot.

I love Ejaculation Generator.
Masonna got me into doing noisy vocals.
>>
>>49806141
That's cool, I bet she's quite charming. Not too surprised about the shy thing though. A lot of people who produce noise are rather introverted, softly spoken and quiet. Something as aggressive and off-the-wall as noise music allows such people to express themselves in a way they normally could not.
>>
>>49806222
Nice trips

I agree. I have never seen an interview video of Merzbow. I wonder what he sounds like.

Masonna is chill as fuck.

I'm a noise maker and I'm really quiet usually.
It's a healthy contrast to have.
>>
>>49806296
I've seen one video interview with Merzbow and he didn't speak throughout it, but one of his collaborators did the talking. I think he's done a few interviews before though as I've seen lists online of his favourite albums and whatnot. Seems like a sweet guy.

Also I'd agree - being a calm person normally and then performing or recording some noise music must be rather therapeutic. If you've got any emotions bottled up, it's a perfect time to let that shit run wild.

Sutcliffe Jugend's When Pornography Is No Longer Enough. Con-Dom is a no-no for me because of how far into the extreme they take racial issues. I don't know if they're racist themselves or if they're recreating racism for the effect of recreating the same discomfort one feels with racism, but some of their work is just downright off-putting for me.

It's just when he first started out he was seen as gimmicky, with the bag over his head, just standing there not really manipulating anything during his performances. I've not listened to him since though. Anything by him you'd recommend?

I just checked Pasi Markkula on Discogs and it only came up with one release and the artist images consisted of close up of a woman who was shat on and some corpses. How the hell do you even find info on this guy?

>>

>>49807738
Yeah, exactly. It's pretty interesting but grotesque all the same. Kinda fits with the title and makes me view the whole album as something Cronenberg-esque in terms of noise - the body horror of noise, if you will.
>>
>>49807676
The only thing he's done under his name is the collaborative single with John Wiese(another curious collaboration considering how nice and well-adjusted Wiese seems to be, though I suppose Markkula wasn't as far gone in 2003 as he is now), the rest of his stuff is under various names(Bizarre Uproar is the most well-known one).
His noise is actually really good as long as you can deal with the unrelenting vileness of his subject matter.
>>
>>49807708
>>49807738
y'know i hate the word "edgy" but i think this exemplifies it
>>
>>49807538
I read interviews with him and he seemed very reasonable and made some good points about this bag-thing. It might look stupid, but the idea of having to control your breath, getting a little light-headed, not seeing anything and so on probably adds to the experience. I would at least try it out on a live-occasion, before mocking it.
And yeah, he's in the HNW-subgenre, therefore he just builds static noise walls. I don't know how to convince people to like that concept, it's definitely not for everyone.

He's not that much into finding titles for his records. Most of the artwork is also created by the labels, so I wouldn't base my first impressions on imagery or titles.
Therefore I'd suggest you try random pieces on bandcamp or youtube and if you like the general sound, it will just continue for however long that record is.
"Become the wall"
>>
>>49807424
All the scat and all the BDSM, violence and rape in album artwork could not disturb me more than the back of Making Orange Things by Venetian Snares + Speedranch. I can't find a picture of it at the moment but it's the most disgusting fucking toilet I've ever seen.
>>
>>49807777

If I like it or not.

Look, a lot of people seem to have problems with this concept. Most people that listen to noise don't listen to it and rank it in different hierarchies, they just listen to it, and if it affects them in a positive way, they like it. So yeah, maybe you could 'trick' some people into saying some random ass artist is Merzbow, but it doesn't fucking matter.

The best bet would maybe be to check out some of Yellow Swans split or collaborative releases.

The Yellow Swans/The Skaters split titled Humming Latice Flowers would be a good next step.

Also worth checking out are the collabs with Birchville Cat Motel and The Cherry Point. From there if you like the other artists continue branching out that way.

As an aside I'd suggest any of Birchville Cat Motel's solo releases too.

I'm a fan of voilence, a fan of agression ingrained within the human body to burst out in any second. Instead of going to an agression therapy I make music, I shred on my guitar with no purpose to impress, a shame that I don't own drums but I still programm them in a DAW and it gives me satisfaction. I love bondage, but I'm not sexually aroused by it. It's all about how you feel about it yourself, if you like it, do it. With all these sexual overstimulations in the past though, people like pharmakon will rise. Asexual, conformist noise that will hount you with it's mediocrity. It doesn't mean it's bad, it's just noise for everybody.

Extreme sexuality and fetish culture are often recurring themes and have influenced my body of work a great deal. Though generally I don't find these images or ideas arousing, I feel that they're rife with allegorical and artistic potential. In this respect, they do excite me. Eh they're not really. Seppuku (Glasgow) used to do very similar stuff prior to disbanding. A lot of "junk" noise folk like Crank Sturgeon, early Filthy Turd and Monopolka also have a very similar style (especially for live sets).

Though it's probably more that they were influenced by Hanatarash.

Most people don't do it in a unique way at all. It seems like it's just sortof a genre convention at this point, so people keep doing it. It makes me think of a billion trash grindcore releases with pictures of butchered women on the cover; just there for the sake of it.
