Wh-what? Wait, is that blood? Oh no… a bird must have hit your window and injured himself.

You head outside and search for the poor thing. But the only thing you find is. A ball of… gore? The bit of flesh which seem to have fallen on you house is unrecognizable, and looks somewhat burnt.
You don’t understand. Is that the gruesome leftover form a prey bird? But before you can make yourself an idea, something hits your head with a sickening *SPLAT*, falling from the sky.

All you see is red, your legs are shaking. A veil of bloody liquid is coating your face and eyes, sticking your mane to your face, and the smell of flesh would have made you puke a dozen time if you weren’t in such a state of shock.

It is the screams of foals which finally bring you out of you trance. You turn to see more burnt ball of flesh rain from the sky. Your fellow villagers are running and screaming in panic, desperately using their hooves or wings to shelter their heads from the horror from bellow while they search a shelter. Meanwhile, you’re still just standing here, while another bit of flesh has soiled your back, watching the unprecedented disaster unfold.

In an instant, the idyllic scenery of you everyday village is turning into a living nightmare.

You finally find enough willpower to move. Looking around, you see that most ponies are already running back home, but there’s two foals hiding under a tree.

“Come with me kids!” You urge them, but in the ruckus of splattering red and the screams of the populace, they don’t hear you. Instead, you decide to go for them, and carry the two little shaking forms on your back.

When you finally close the door of your house, the three of you are already covered in filth. The first thing you have to do is to light some candles since the gore is blotting out the lights of your windows.

After sending the two foals in the bathroom to clean themselves, you too use the kitchen tap to frenetically scrub as much filth away from you and from the ground as possible. But with the amount of meat falling from the sky, the bloody odour has already infected everything, and your own house is starting to feel foreign to you as your senses are assaulted by the overwhelming presence of death everywhere.

You wait uncomfortably as you hear the otherworldly ruckus of flesh raining outside. Your walls and roof creak unpleasantly, as they weren’t built with such nightmarish incidents in mind. And it doesn’t look like it will stop anytime soon.

You offer a silent prayer to Celestia. Usually, looking at the portrait of the Sun Sister would make you feel a little better, but today… the motherly smile she presents for above your chimney look like it’s mocking you, looking down on a fool who thinks talking to a piece of paper will bring salvation.

After you finish, you see the two little foals emerging from your bathroom. It looks like they couldn’t resist keeping some on your long towels on their back. They probably feel, like their bedsheets, that these will keep the evils of the night away. A meagre bit of hope, your cringe to yourself, but probably no more insignificant that your prayer from earlier.

Despite the horror outside, you prepare yourself to go out again. The foals refuse at first, and you have to explain them their parents are certainly dead worried about them, and will probably search everywhere outside for them, so they had to be courageous. They clearly would prefer to remain in the relative safety of your house, but these foals are still at an age they will listen to the adults when hard times strikes.

You take out your sturdiest umbrella, as well as rain clothes for everyone. Since any of your boots are way too big to fit the hooves of the foals, you decide to wrap them in a jute bags you’ve torn to pieces. As you open the door to the outside, and witness the supernatural downpour of death once again, your mind has to wonder what kind suicidal thoughts would make somepony want to go out there.

Hum, bringing a family back together is probably good enough.

The foals are tightly clustered against your flanks as you walk. Even with the umbrella protecting you from most of the filth, the meat juices are splattering everywhere when the chunks of flesh fall on the ground. Everything has been coated in a sinister layer of brownish-red by now, and your hooves squash through the unholy matter at each step you take.

The two foals start crying loudly eventually. This is just too much for them. But as long as they keep walking, this is not a problem. And their shaky hooves look like they’ll follow yours, as long as you make sure not to show how much you want to cry yourself.

After a few minutes which felt like an eternity though hell, you finally arrive in front on the house of the foals. This isn’t a big village, so even though you didn’t know those kids or their parents personally, you knew where they lived. You bang on the door, and soon call for the parents as you fear banging is probably not gonna inspire any sympathy in times like these.

A little while after the foals have joined your calls, the door finally opens, revealing a terrified mare. But for the first time since this all started, you see a trio of happy faces when the mother instantly recognizes her children and have them jump to hug her.

The mare thanks you profusely, and since she knows you’re living alone, she offers you to stay with them until the end of this madness. She tells you she was just making breakfast.

Indeed, a big cauldron is simmering in the corner of the room. With one bowl ready on the table.

When the foals ask where their daddy is, the smile of the mother wanes as she says he got out to search for them, but that he should return at any moment now.

Still, the mare looks ecstatic as she sits down, saying she made a new recipe to cheer everyone up in these dark times, but the children are even worst at looking polite than you are. The closest from her disdainfully pushes the bowl away, and ask if they can’t have some of the carrots they had in the pantry instead. The mother shakes her head, saying it got filthy with the rain, and so did the wheat in the cellar, and so did the apples in the barrel, and so did the bread next to the window, and so did the chocolate on the shelves…

You flip the table on the mare, sending her down since she was still pushing on the head of her foal. In the confusion, you look around in a panic for some weapon to defend yourself. A bottle of wine will have to do.

“Pecky, aren’t we?” You turn, holding tight on your improvised mace. The mare has risen again, one of her front legs bent in a way it shouldn’t, but the pain she should feel doesn’t have any space to show on her demented face.
“DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD IT WAS?” She shrieks anew, and starts to motion toward the cauldron, which she topples over with a kick, spilling its content on the floor.

A new wave of horror washes over you as hooves, a skull, and other bones roll over from the pot. You can’t repress a whimper when the small wave of unclean brew splashes on your hooves.
“I WANTED TO MAKE A REAL FEAST MADE WITH WHAT THEY LOVE THE MOST!” The mare screams, before lunging at you with her weapon. “COULDN’T YOU SHOW A LITTLE RESPECT!?”

The commotion with the table leaves you little room to run around. There no choice but to get in a melee at this point.
Despite her crooked leg, the mare charges you like a bull. You brace yourself, and prepare to parry the first strike of the knife with your own weapon, but without any guard, the knife slides on the glass and cruelly reaps the skin just above your hoof. The burn of the pain almost makes you lose your grip on the bottle, but the adrenaline allows you to keep you head focussed, and there’s nothing between the head of the mare and your weapon right now.

With a powerful swing, you hit the head of the mare hard enough to shatter your bottle on her skull.

And then there’s silence. Only your breath as you stand over the corpse of the mare. Until you hear some coughing behind you, and you see the dazed foal meekly coming out from behind the thrown over table. He looks at you with an indescribable expression.

His words ring in your head like the knell. These aren’t the words of a foal. In shock, you slowly back away, suddenly fearful that whatever you’ve been holding in your arms might have been another predator. But the little equine does nothing, besides staring at you with a quizzical face, even amused at your distress.

“You can calm down.” The foal smiles at you. “You killed her. There’s no danger anymore.” He states these facts like they’re good news in a sunny day “Let’s take care of that mean cut instead.” He points at you hoof. And before you can answer or question him, he walks away to another room. Incapable to think about another course of action, you follow him.

The foal brings you to what’s probably the room of his parents, where he shows you the little stash of medical supplies of the family. The perspective of stitching you flesh back together yourself isn’t exactly enchanting you, but this madness outside won’t excuse any dirty wound, especially when it’s gonna start to rot… So after taking a piece of bedsheet between your teeth, you start doing the dirty work, the foal watching you with attention.
