***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Why do they push shit like Hathaway's Flash and Advance of Zeta in all these Gundam games but never make kits of them
>>
How's the hg Full Glansa?
>>
>>15603797
AoZ's gotten a few kits, but nothing in recent memory.
Hathaway's Flash MS are fucking huge, and the only ones that would sell are the Xi and Penelope, the two biggest suits in a series of XBOXhuge suits. At 1/144 scale those two would be are as big as most MGs.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Tomy's 1/44 are actually pretty nice, if a bit small considering their price because they come with a little diorama base that it doesn't take much work to pretty up.

Doesn't have much variety but the line is worth checking out.

The reason that's happening is either you're spraying thick, heavy coats or the pressure needs to be adjusted. Practice different settings/techniques on a spoon to find the correct combination since it's different for each setup and climate.

Can any of you seasoned modelers tell me why people hate the HGUC ZZ? I've asked in other places too, but I wanna hear your opinions on it...Aside from the horrible design engineering for the backpack getting in the way of shoulder articulation. and the thigh shape getting in the way of poseability, it really doesn't seem that bad to me...

It's not like it's that hard to add space to the backpack to add some leeway for the shoulder's to move. All you'd need is an adaptor of some sort.

Is it because it's a partsformer? I've seen worse partsformers (I'm talking about the shit-tier HG Zetas/Deltas and every other waverider that leaves an entire fucking torso and crotch when it transforms).
>>
>>15605616
Wasn't the whole point of the MSG weapons and detail parts originally sort of implied or it to be used for Bandai kits way back when Kotobukiya first started releasing them? Stuff like rails, thrusters, hands, duct nozzles, etc. I mean the hands even come with a balljoint option that works suspiciously well for 1/100 bandai stuff. The Frame arms kits came later IIRC.
>>
>>15605710
>Aside from the horrible design engineering for the backpack getting in the way of shoulder articulation. and the thigh shape getting in the way of poseability,

That's pretty much it. Without modding it's a brick where all the parts get in the way of each other.

A fun build. Sometimes the inner frame might seem a bit loose, and it's easy to get burnt out as you spend half an hour and realize you've only finished part of the leg, but keep building and you get a really nice looking red crab. Incredibly posable, too.

Question on preshading and panel lining. I've never seen a single build where both are used to my knowledge. Is it because preshading panel lines acts as the same sort of "add more detail to this area" that panel lining does? If I'm doing a build where I intend to scribe a few more panel lines onto a simple model would it be too cluttered if I went over them with preshading vs just doing a panel wash?
>>
>>15605710
>It's not like it's that hard to add
90% of gunpla builders don't want to do anything but just build a kit right out of the box. You ask far, far too much of people if you expect them to mod.

Anyways, HGUC ZZ is fine for what it is and great considering when it came out. It shits all over MG ZZ in articulation and sculpt, it can transform pretty great, and it does a pretty good job with the giant beam sabers (though I wish you could hold both at once). People bitching about it are probably just expecting it to be fucking magic, it's still the ZZ.

Xi's overall height is 28m, whereas the Psyco's is 40m. The HG Psyco Gundam dwarfs other HGs and is nearly as tall as the PG RX-78-2. Also, the Penelope stands at a massive 32.5m tall with the Minovsky Flight System equipped and without it, the infinitely sexier Odysseus is a bit under 26m tall.

The thing about Hathaway's Flash suits is that they aren't just tall, but they're bulky as fuck. While the Penelope is the fattest of them all, the Xi is closer to the ZZ in that it wears pretty bulky equipment rather than the Psyco mostly being an upscaled Grandpa Gundam. Hell, even the Gustav Karl and the Messer have that sort of ZZ-era big and beefy aesthetic, along with being 22m and 24m tall respectively. A 1/144 of ANY Hathaway's Flash design is going to be a serious amount of plastic.

It was my very first kit and even though it has trash bags it was a really fun build. However, some of the joints were either loose or just finicky because of those trash bags. WTF kind of autist cares enough about polycaps besides cutting excess nubs?? FFS they're POLYCAPS. Nobody can barely even fucking see those things once you've assembled the part they're supposed to go in...

You remind me of one of those autists that overly detail all the moldings on an inner frame of a MG despite the fact NOBODY in that kit's entire life WILL EVER even SEE THEM AGAIN because the armor that covers it will be permanently fixed and painted over. Not unless it has a hatch that opens for viewing.

Why fucking waste time and effort on something nobody will ever look at or see?

The ones circled in red are polycaps. It's possible to collapse the arms holding the binders so that they do not show up, but if they are like in the image, they are exposed where you took them off the runners.

More than that I need a better lighting set up.

I could have stuff spread out more to use the lower shelves but barely any light reaches them so all I have on the bottom is a dendrobium that needs to be painted.

I don't want to put the lights on every piece of glass because the bottoms of them are ugly as fuck and only Aigis' stand is big enough to hide it from being visible through the shelf.

Wondering if anyone can confirm this. Recently I bought an old MG Zaku 2 and I'm finally getting round to building it. However I found something a bit odd. I noticed Zeon was spelt "Zion". At first I thought I had bought a bootleg but it has the appropriate Bandai logo and there is nothing omitted on the boxart or in Chinese. I did a bit of researching online and discovered that this could be before Bandai changed Zion to Zeon as it was apparently Zion for a good while before they noticed what Zion also meant. Apparently this was the case for most of their merchandise before the turn of the century. Can anyone confirm this? Also if I am correct in saying this does this mean the I just have an old MG before the correction was made?

Looking for some critique from fellow model builders that airbrush and drybrush, I've tried airbrushing for the first time and I tried it out on a resin conversion kit which in retrospect probably wasn't such a great idea.

The entire process has been an uphill battle since I first got recommended using Revell paint which turned out to be a nightmare with the primer and base coat falling off with tamiya masking tape even though the resin was sanded with P2000/P3000 properly as some people suggested.

I was pretty much forced to drybrush most of the colors because I couldn't use masking tape which with my limited experience didn't get the effect I was hoping for in all honesty.

I've heard people suggest Tamiya or Mr.Color but I'm just wondering what the correct choice would be for resin in case I decide to dabble in it in the future.

Revell is very spotty, quality-wise. Seems to have a very short shelf life and re-activating it with water will just end in tears down the line.

But seriously, Revell overall is a trashy brand. From what I remember, modellers spend hundreds on aftermarket parts trying to unfuck the kits.

Prime it with a sandable primer. Tamiya and mr.color work fine, especiall when you use mr. Color leveling thinner (wear a respirator and ventilate well, that stuff has bad fumes). I like tamiya because if you fuck up you can strip it all off in 5 minutes with windex.

And did you properly wash and dry the resin parts before painting? It looks like the paint had a bad reaction to something on the surface.
>>
>>15609026
Sorry, meant First* prime with a sandable primer, then fix any errors, bubbles, etc you see. Then paint.
>>
>>15609026

Thanks for the feedback!
Yes, I sanded it all down properly and cleaned it with tinner and left that to dry for 2 days before I actually started applying primer.

After I added to color coating there was no problem with the paint besides not being able to apply masking tape due to the paint coming off easily.

Everything went south the moment I starter applying the revell gloss coat which I thinned down according to their suggestions.

I waited a week between every coat so I was sure it all dried properly.
>>
>>15609035
Yes, I made sure there were no inconsistencies before applying every coat, for some reason the reaction started after the gloss coat dried.

>>15609017
Revell seems to be quite big in Europe but my experience with it has been absolutely terrible so I'll most likely jump over to Tamiya.
>>
>>15609049
Three things to know about tamiya.

-It is not a water based acrylic. You thin it with alcohol or lacquer thinners. Water will not thin it properly.

-As a result of the above, it is mostly for airbrush. It does not handbrush well although you can still paint small details with it.

-It is a bit fragile and can scratch/chip easily until you put a decent clwarcoat onto it.

Other than that it is a nice line of paint. Especially if you like military colors.

And based on everything you said, it sounds like the clearcoat reacted badly with the paint. Which is weird since according to you they were the same brand. I haven't ever used revell paints so I can't speak for their quality though.

>>
>>15609070

The only parts of the kit that aren't fucked up is what I airbrushed gray, which is Tamiya acrylic that the hobby shop had lying around since they had no Revell gray, which is quite hilarious seeing as the Revell gloss coat did not have a reaction with that.

Does the Tamiya color coat also chip with masking tape like the Revell did with mine, or can I trust it not to do that?

I'd like one sure. But here's a free one for (you) since you seem to like insulting me even though I really do like gundams and just don't happen to know everything (you) do about them. I'm so sorry if that offends your delicate sensibilities. Maybe I should stop liking other things too based on how you deem appropriate?
>>
>>15606038
Even the Cardigan has the same mechanism. You expect a lot from an HG aren't you?
>>
I'm planning to buy first gunpla and I can't choose between standard NG Barbatos and MG Red Astray Frame. Price doesn't really matter, I'm just asking which one I would be better off with. I'm thinking about Red Astray but won't MG be too hard for a complete beginner?
>>
>>15610400
Hg Barbatos 6th form
>>
>>15610071
Holy shit, I never realized how good the Rodi looks with "normal" legs. It's like the only thing actually wrong with the design was just the legs.
>>
>>15610585
Since you're just building it a simple MG like the Red Frame isn't that hard. Generally good MG kits for beginners would be the Strike RM and the Gundam X. Red Frame Astray isn't too far off from those 2 in terms of simplicity.

If you decided to give NG Barbatos a shot I suggest the 6th form for more optional parts, unless you really like the weapons that comes with the Barbatos.

If you're really hesitant of having the Red Frame as your first gunpla then go for the Barbatos, its simple and beginner friendly
>>
>>15610585
Nah, both are simple. MGs just have more pieces and are more expensive, so if you mess up there'll be more nubs, gouge marks, etc. around that make it ugly. If you've got prior experience with plastic models or miniatures then I'd say go for the MG. Guide basically just says to buy cheaper kits first because nearly everyone's first kits end up bad.

Also, 1/100 Barbatos 6th form comes with parts to make the 4th form, and the mace. Everybody loves the mace.
>>
>>15610608
Thanks for response. Would I need to get any special tools to build Red Frame if I decided to go for it? or will I be good just with something to cut out the parts?
>>
>>15610621
Generally people here would tell you to build, clean nubs and give it panel lines etc.

For a beginner I sorta disagree, I think what you need for now is some nippers to cut out the parts: https://hlj.com/search/go?w=nipper

And since panel lines are easy just get this: https://www.amazon.com/GSI-Creos-Black-Gundam-Marker/dp/B00HY8JI7C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497327707&sr=8-1&keywords=gundam+black+marker and panel line your kit once its done

I suggest getting a few more model kits to get the feel of building them. Only then can you start moving to the next stage that is sanding and removing nub marks. Don't be too hasty.

So that just means a lot of sanding and filing which I do on basically every kit anyway so not like that has changed much. At least its undergated, most kits don't even give you that luxury.

Also as to the leg assembly I find that basically every kit is so hit and miss on leg design. Very rarely is something ever just "ok" its usually either really nice or just an absolute clusterfuck of seams.

No, retard. He's saying that the new HG Tristan doesn't have the ability to use the forearm gatlings because they do no attach properly. Just like how the Super Fumina has the same forearm gatlings like the Cardigan has but can't use them because the design on the fumina is just for props.

So I want to use the green led from bandai in the Sazabi ver Ka. What would be the best way to optimize it's effect? >>
>>15611161
If you are using the led and paint the back of the monoeye silver then the light won't shine through at all because an opaque paint is now blocking it. The silver paint thing is for when there is no led and you want the clear part to catch the light better.

In hindsight I'm kicking myself for choosing the stupid RG RX-78-2 as my first gunpla build. Fuck all the parts that Bandai thinks should stick to the frame through magic. On the other hand, I'm glad I did pick this kit first because while I hated it in some spots, it was really cathartic and actually kinda fun to build.

It was nice having something I could just work on with movies and shows on in the background. Also obviously my first panel lining job and for now, fuck those tiny ass stickers it came with. I'll probably just do the more noticeable ones like the anime markings and serial numbers and go back when I get a copper pen to do the joints.

Yeah the faceplate is one of the areas where I fucked up a lot. The way it goes on the face, it rubs against the chin, scraping the paint off, that made me try and handpaint the places it scraped off, and it just went to hell from there. I'm thinking of stripping it and painting it another color, but how would I be able to avoid scraping the paint off the chin or the faceplate itself?
>>
>>15612573
Yeah, Unicorn is pretty much the most popular entry in the franchise over there, surpassed only by the OG. There are somewhere around 50 HG kits just for the RX-0 alone, and it's gonna be standing in for the RX-78-2 in Gundam Front Tokyo for a damn reason.

>>
>>15612697
some suggestions:
hand paint it when the faceplate is on the head, but that depends on how steady your hand is
after doing a coat of paint, let it cure and top coat it. that should help it from chipping
modify it slightly by sanding it so the chin or the face plate wont scrape too much from each other

i like the color scheme, but the silver faceplate distracts it and looks odd there, either change it or add some silver to the rest of the body
>>
>>15612767
Alright, Thanks! I'll give it a shot. I also agree that the silver is a bit too distracting, I was thinking of doing it in the same greenish gray, but I'm worried it won't show up as well. I'm sure I'll figure something out eventual though.

I've mostly finished up a brown Domtropen recently, and I've gotta say I'm not exactly thrilled with the quality of the kit. Guess that's my fault for not researching ahead of time.

Any case, I'm a big fan of Zeon grunts, and I'm looking for another one to work on. Trying to do some asking around ahead of time though. I'm considering the HG Kampfer from 0080 or maybe the HG Dreissen from Unicorn. Either of those good?

In a similar vein, does anybody know a decent Gelgoog model?
>>
>>15613090
Kampfer is honestly quite garbage, very poorly designed legs give it no real freedom of movement down there and everything else is rather subpar. Can't say much about the dreissen though.

So, some of my old kits have parts that just keep developing magical stress cracks/fractures. Pic related but not mine.

My Clanche actually had her wrist guards shatter to pieces. How the fuck do I repair this and prevent it from happening again? Specially the wrist guards on the Clanche. I have an inkling the ball joint on the wrist expands the polycap too much thus cracking the flimsy THIN plastic wristguard...

- If I sand the wrist joint to make it smaller, the hand will end up limp and loose.
- If I shave he polycap's outer edges, the wrist guard will be loose.
- If I shave the inner part of the wrist guard that hugs the polycap, the wrist guard will be loose...

I'm stuck in a clanche-22 here.

Also. in regards to fixing stress fractures/cracks, do I use putty? or plastic cement to reattach and seal them back together? And what kind of putty do I use? Is that tamiya brand stuff ok?
