How did Wizard and Ghost fared among japanese kids? I've heard Japanese kids usually dislike more "dark" or "serious" Riders which is why Den-O was so popular it just won't go away.

Nah, what kept Den-O alive was the older fanbase, actually. It sold dvds on a much higher number than previous (and future) shows. Like at its peak, a VA live event talk show recording sold more than 30k units, which is about thrice as much as Rider movies that are considered good performers like the Drive Saga movies.

The merchandising did well after 3 years of weak sales, but it was still bellow shows like Ryuki and Faiz.

It's why although it was pushed for years as a movie series, there aren't that many post-series forms and Riders.

There are demographic numbers for Wizard and Ghost on 2ch, although I can't check them right now.

This is something I've heard around on other toku boards and that one Toei interview during the time Decade was unveiled, that Den-O was super popular because it was "the right ammount of silly and action".

So then I read up, japanese kids liked their Kamen Rider and Sentai more on the silly scale (Den-O, and all the profits it brought) compared to more serious/darker ones (compared to, for the sake of arguement, Go-Busters, and how little the toys sold).

If you followed early heisei riders, you'd notice that they tried adding more and more humor to appeal to kids. Kuuga only had dry humor. Agito, Ryuki and Faiz had more humor based on Japanese social awkwardness. Blade is unintentionally humorous but they started to add in some slapstick humor in there.

By Kabuto, it became a mess of writing with the slapstick humor blending poorly with the serious stuff. Almost all of the main cast became comic relief characters in the weird part of the 2nd half.

So yeah, Den-O is significant because it was the first heisei rider that was able to balance the silly bits with the serious stuff. If you look beyond the light-hearted tone, it's actually the darkest Kamen Rider series, even darker than the gory Amazons stuff.

Because in Sentai, it's far more a team effort than in Kamen Rider. You spend a year getting close with 5+ other people and you have to sell the team. Meanwhile even in shows with multiple Riders, because at the end of the day, one of the Riders IS the star because they have top billing and sometimes a new Rider doesn't even join till 20 episodes of production. It can't compare to people being together from day 1.

Sadly, I feel that bond is being murdered by Red favoritism and I doubt the Kyurangers will have any sort of lasting bond because of how bloated the cast is and how half the team is just VAs who don't have to show up to the sets and bond.

He's still "retired." Basically, he has no obligation to do anything and anything he's written in the past 5-ish years are of his own volition and typically are pet projects. The only real exception to this being the Kamen Rider 1 movie, which he was chosen for due to several reasons, namely family connections and Fujioka of all people being quite fond of him.

It's hard to correlate falling box office earnings with Yonemura when TV ratings are also falling rather drastically across the board. It becomes less a matter of "Obviously it's because this movie/show sucks and the director/writer/producer fucked it all up!" and more a matter of "We only get the numbers after the fact and they're going down no matter who we put in charge."

Even Sakamoto's stuff isn't guaranteed gold, especially given his bad habits of samefights.

The last two Spring movies (which were Kaneda's return after two Shibasaki spring movies) did especially bad though.

CSHT opened higher than Rider 1, but still lower than previous movies, and dropped out of the top 10 faster than Rider 1, with certainly lower numbers than Rider 1 by the third week, considering the last listed movie in the top 10.

Kaneda also directed the Gaim solo movie, which had the lowest box office for a Heisei Rider summer movie (and only these last two Spring movies did worse than it). They could somehow just blame Sentai again though, since this was Sentai's big return to having constant present through a Spring movie, rather than blaming Kaneda.

I find that pretty much every Rider I've watched since I started suffers from a midseason slump of sorts, which happens somewhere between episodes 15 and 35 or so. Some Riders suffer from it worse than others (OOO being hit particularly hard). Drive is another pretty good example of a series that has a hard midseason slump, but it's also one of the few to bounce back from it into a fantastic final arc.

I tend to judge a series as a whole based on how bad the slump is and how well the show manages to recover.
