***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Then would you recommend and HG or MG?
>>
>>15447403
HG is stuck in whichever form you get, but MG falls apart if a bit of dust lands on it. Either way, you're not transforming it unless you get the PG.

Groupbuild wip. I'm thinking I may want to buy a Rebake to replace the arms.

I'm not snapping anything together before it's painted for fear of not being able to separate parts.
>>
>>15448008
For most stuff you can just use a hobby knife or one of those part splitters to separate parts. Just be careful when putting in peices that can't come back out. The visor on the GM is a good example.
>>
>>15448087
I had one hell of a time getting my last kit's head apart. Took me about 20 minutes.

I'll probably just put the pegs half in the hole to get an idea of scale and how I want to paint it.

I still have an unbuilt V-Dash ver ka in my backlog. It wasn't very appealing to build when I realized that you build several heads, for some reason I do not enjoy building heads.
>>
>>15448241
TSF arms aren't meant to pivot like that. The sub-arms holding the weapons rotate instead.

The Victory is half the ZZ's size. It'll be fine.

I don't get it
>>
>>15448305

I think it's V fin gems, eye stickers and other small parts that I don't enjoy.

I usually build both legs or arms at the same time though.
>>
>>15448098
You can also snip the tips of the pegs at a 45 degree angle. It'll still be firm enough to stay together, but makes it much easier separating later when you figure out how you want to paint it. Worst case is that you can cement them together if it's too loose, which you might be doing anyway fixing seam lines.

So I thought this would be a neat idea for us all to share.

What got you into gunpla? What was your entry into the hobby? For me, my brother got me the MG RX-78-02 Origin. We used to do the shitty no grade Wing and G Gundam kits back in the day and I think a few HG 1/100s. I really enjoyed the build and now 3 months later I have a backlog and I'm getting ready to do my first paintjob this weekend.
>>
>>15448552

>>
>>15448552
Anon on another board I used to frequent kept posting Build Fighters images while recommending it, so I got curious and watched through that, which was also my introduction to Gundam as a whole. Went back to 0079 and watched the rest while building a Star Build Strike, and kept going from there.

I got into mecha anime in the Fall of 2014. A few months later, a Japanese-centric arcade I frequent started offering Build Fighters HGs as prizes, so I got the Star Build Strike as my first kit.

I would continue to win Gunpla from this place for a while as well as buying them at hobby stores and online, but in the last year, the arcade has stopped updating their gunpla offerings. Now they only have a few IBO 1/100s that I'm not interested in.
>>
>>15448552
i watched Origin and got hooked. slowly watching other gundam media now. I like how it tries to root itself in reality. I appreciate the little details like that moving hand-rail to move along it a zero G environment, or people actually wearing pressurized suits inside the ship during combat, or attitude control thrusters on mobile suits (which they dont use enough in the shows)

Any tips for improvement on this? I used the Tamiya grey panel line fluid which I'm not super hot on, but I'd like some criticism.
>>
>>15448552
I used to a lot of 40k, most of the fun was in the modeling. I ended up moving to a place where they didn't have any real community, which is fucking weird considering I live near 2 military bases.
I still enjoy modeling a ton so I bought some HGs, discovered I enjoyed it and bought some more.

My mother ended up moving close by and has some breathing problems, so I let her have one of my kits to try out and it ended up helping her (just wanted to try the art therapy meme shit). Ended up getting her a few more kits, and we'll work on them when I visit sometimes. Amusingly, almost half of them are from Build Fighters.

I think her favorite suit/kit is the Brave Commander.
>>
>>15448906
so you may not like the tamiya grey liner but i'm gunna say I had to look fairly hard to notice it on some sections, so i'd say it hit the desired effect nicely. Only criticism i'd offer is flat coat it, looks a bit too glossy for my tastes.
>>
>>15448552
Friends of mine were all talking about their figure collection and shelves. I wasn't keen on spending hundred of dollars on one figure but I just listened. Then one of my pals explained to me his gunpla and how cheap a few starting HGs are.

That was a year ago and gunpla got me into watching the shows. I'm pretty sure if I tally all of my costs on this hobby it would of contradicted with my thoughts earlier on figures.

Here it is completely naked, no stickers or work done to it. It's a very nice kit to build with some good engineering but that grey plastic just fails to satisfy and it surprisingly has some bad seem lines on the shins and bazooka. I'll probably use it to practice my painting.

I may slow down on kits after this and my upcoming ignited gouf so I can take the time to go back and clean up the kits I already have.

Gundam Wing airing on Toonami in the early 200s was my first introduction to Gndam, like many others. When I found out there were "customizable" model kits, I jumped on the train immediately and bought the old NG Heavyarms and Tallgeese, and fell in love. The I came across a Gundam X kit in my local comic shop. I wasn't aware that there were numerous Gundam series over the years and picked it up. When I showed my best friend at the time, he opened my eyes to the whole Gundam world, and my love for gunpla expanded from that. Just built kit #100 in my collection with a backlog of seven or eight kits.

Here's my third kit ever, the Gundam X that I mentioned. It was also my first custom. I even made a couple of swords out of the runners and I was so proud of it back then, but now it's easy to tell that I built and painted this thing nearly fifteen years ago.

I started getting interested years ago. My first gundam series was Wing when it aired over here, somewhere around the time 00 aired I startrd seeing gunpla kits online and I thought they were really cool. When BGF aired I was ready to buy one but these threads and the fact that it takes a lot of money deterred me. I knew I'd want to paint my kits and for a novice it all seemed so intimidating.

Last year I was at Dutch comic con and found a HG Banshee for a few euros and thought, fuck it. I ended up buying it.

A year later and I own 18 kits and Im airbrushing all of my stuff.

Fuck I love my plastic crack

Wing EW is just a repackaging of the Wing Ver KA, from 2004. All of the other EW Gundams are based on a general XXXG frame from 2010. I have the Wing Ver KA and Heavyarms EW, and the Wing has more difficulty in posing both because its range of motion is worse and because it's just not as sturdy. It takes a fair bit of effort just to get it to hold the buster rifle properly, and if you try to put it in a horizontal position it'll sag within a week. It's not an awful kit, but it shows its age.

It looks like you didn't panel line everything.
Gundam markers are easier in my opinion. A grey realtouch marker (Can also be used for cheap post shading). I also sometimes use a .03 mechanical pencil for the ultra thin lines on the face.

Also do yourself a favor and buy some waterslide decals online from Amazon or ebay. They aren't that expensive and make the kit look way nicer.

Grew up watching godzilla, power rangers, and speed racer. Giant monsters and robots always were so cool. So when Wing aired on Toonami, Gundam found a welcome home in my heart.

My dad is a car guy and would build car models every so often, but as a kid I liked giant robots and not cars so I would get old kits that required glue like Zo'gok and Gogg and build and detail them while my dad would do his cars.

I always wanted to get back into the hobby as an adult with cash flow to "do a kit justice" and eventually decided to pull the trigger and get back into the model world.

So I bought 4 kits this last xmas and a bunch of supplies to make them really shine. Still have some seam welding to do on them and then paint and weather and bought 3 more kits today.

Its a really enjoyable and relaxing hobby and I plan on replacing my alcohol addiction with plastic crack.

MG Wing vEW is a recolor of the original MG Wing vKa. vKa kits tend to be sort of timeless engineering-wise so there's nothing strictly wrong with the main body itself, but you start running into problems when you look at the accessories.

Back then, hands on MGs fucking sucked. They phased out the old HG style fixed pose hand, but they hadn't added the built-in pegs I believe the mkII 2.0 pioneered. Instead you literally just had a 3-1-and-then-the-thumb hand you wedged the accessories into. This worked out fine for most kits, since beam rifles tend to be small, but you can guess how it worked out for the Wing.

There's a reason pic-related is the Wing vKa's most famous pose.

I just finished my first gundam- this Transient. I wasn't planning on doing it in one sitting, but I enjoyed the process a ton more than I expected. Now, I'm looking to my next build.

Could you guys give me some recommendations that would look good with the Transient? Thanks in advance

>>

Used to do warhammer as a wee tot, got into Gundam watching the origional series and then Zeta as an escape during uni exams. It was one of my few breaks not spent studying and writing essays.

So I kind of associate both building model kits in general and Gundam as a series with feeling good and relaxed and happy.

Once I found out how cheap the kits where I bought a few SAL small packet, forgot for a few months, then built them with my little sister when they arrived. Started with a Advanced Grade Age Sparrow because it was the cheapest thing available to practice on and a Val Valow because i lke non human suits.

Now I have a few in a cupboard built, a few boxed and my cousins love getting them as presants for christmas/birthday. My sister built a few but got kind of bored with how similar they are to build, and has a lot of shit cluttering her shelves anyway.

Dug out a load of old Warhammer paints from the attic a month or two ago, so I am going to try handpainting pretty soon.

When priming, should the entire surface of the piece being painted be covered on the first coat, or is a coat just considered one pass over the piece? Same for spray paint. Do I just hit it once, regardless of if the piece becomes the desired color on the first pass or not, and then wait x amount of time to do the next coat?

I'm practicing on an extra foot piece I had lying around.

I would also like to know this as I am going to paint for the first time next week.

Where did you get those clamps?
>>
>>15453911
They're alligator clips, you can find them for cheap just about anywhere. I use sticky tack instead, myself. A small bit of that attached to a piece on a stick from a leftover runner accomplishes the same purpose.
>>
>>15453911
Amazon I think. Like $3-4 for 50 if I recall.
Although, I'm beginning to see how >>15453916 may be a better method. It's hard to find something for the clip to bite on to sometimes.
>>
>>15453891
This is a good question. I just tested painting on some spoons and I sprayed the spoon until it was covered in primer fully. I then did the same with spray paint. It turned out decent. I only did a single coat because I was testing topcoats to see if a matte or gloss coat looked better. I don't know how well it really turned out because it was just a spoon but it looked evenly coated.
>>
>>15453891

Safer to do one ~90% coverage coat, letting it dry and then going over the rest than trying to nail all of it at once. You don't want to end up spraying too much primer on the piece.

/m/, I need you to convince me to not buy a Materia FAG and a Zudah, and poorly kitbash them together.
>>
>>15454087
Well, for one thing the Materia's bigger than the Zudah so you'd get into some trouble with the different sizes.

But imagine the feeling of satisfaction you'd have once you actually pull it off. And not just haphazardly slap pieces together, but actually make it flow well. Imagine how nice the Zudah's skirt armor would look on the Materia's hips. Picture the shield strapped to her shoulder or her back, along with the panzerfaust and the heat hawk as back-up weapons to complement that massive sniper rifle. Visualize Materia, with a protective chest-piece made from modifying the Zudah's torso, taking aim with that sniper rifle while in a prone position.

If you're going to do something anon, do it well.

>>15454484
well if it works nothing, but why?
also which ones are thin or extra thin, S, economy, and limonene tell me nothing

its not just orange scented

limonene is a hydrocarbon polstyrene solvent naturally found in citrus fruits, like oranges and lemons. unlike normal plastic cements, limonene cement is supposedly nontoxic (and smells good), so its safer to use in enclosed spaces.

just like regular cements, there's a normal and extra thin version.

oh wow, that makes much more sense

from the reviews and what ive seen on youtube and such though, they seem to work perfectly fine. it might take a little bit longer to evaporate/dry, but otherwise i don't see anything wrong with it
