***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Hey senpai, I'm currently working on my GP01/FB perfect grade, and while building the head it says I need a CR 1220 button cell battery. However, I'm in podunk southern city, USA, and I can't find a shop that has them. I know I could order some online, but I was wondering if anyone knows if any other types of battery would work without frying the LED that might be more common because I'm too impatient to wait for shipping on batteries

It's a watch battery. If you can't find it at a jewellery or watch store, then don't you have a Radioshack or some other kind of electronics store nearby?

Our radioshack closed shop about a year or so ago. Didn't think about checking a watch shop, might try to find one when I'm off work tomorrow. The closest thing we have to a radioshack/jewellery/watch store that I know of is walmart, and they don't have it in stock around here. I've also tried my city's hobby shop, to no avail. I might also give our model shop a try for when I inevitably go there next week to increase my backlog to see if they happen to have one.

Starting to think an online order might be my only option unless I take a road trip elsewhere, lol.
>>
>>15439090
try a drugstore like cvs or even a target

if the instructions call for a 3v, then substituting in another 3v battery should be fine as long as it fits

though the batteries found in brick and mortar stores are often just batteries, so if you're wiring something without a good connection it might be wiser to pick up some tabbed batteries on ebay.

So what's the best Heavyarms kit?

MG Ver. EW, I assume?
>>
>>15439180
You have 6 options.

The really incredibly shitty 1/144 NG heavyarms from the 90s.

The old SD heavyarms.

The 1/144 Heavyarms custom EW which is mildly better than the 1/144 NG but still not great.

The 1/100 HG Heavyarms Custom EW which was the best of the older kits but still not great.

The SD Musha heavyarms.

The MG you posted which is the undeniable best heavyarms kit all around.

I chose hidden option 7 and bought the RD Figure before it price jumped.
>>
>>15439180
it is the most recent kit, so yes. fantastic kit overall, but the only small complaint is that the missiles are molded in the same grey plastic as the inner frame, so you need to paint them.
>>
Is a single action airbrush fine if I never plan on weathering or shading at all?
>>
>>15439203
>but the only small complaint is that the missiles are molded in the same grey plastic as the inner frame, so you need to paint them.

That's the color they are in the OVA.

And they actually made it super easy to paint them if you want to change the color.
>>
>>15439200
Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. Just wondering if I was missing something.

Also wasn't there a P-Bandai MG Heavyarms Custom EW? Not that I'd plan on getting that any time soon since the only way to get it now is through insanely overpriced resellers.

>>15439203
I've got no problem painting the missiles, I've seen OOB pictures and planned on painting them anyway to make them pop more. Like the pic in >>15439180

>>
>>15439618
The damage is to the scale of the weapons they are in combat against.
>>
>>15439677
Either way it's still overdone and detracts from the overall look of the model. A few marks would have been OK, the smaller ones actually don't look terrible, but with so many it looks like you just spazzed out with a soldering iron and ruined a perfectly fine kit.

You destroyed that model, plain and simple. I'm sorry but that's the truth.

>>

No, not in that way. It's not good.

You destroyed it in the "has no idea what they're doing and just looks like a textbook example of why you should never let children play with soldering irons" way.
>>
>>15439733
It doesn't look that bad, man. It's much better than a lot of people's first attempts at this hobby, cut him some slack. Just say he could've done better and leave it at that.
>>

I made out ok, I got the ball box, a ground type GM, and a little 1/250ish scale wing gundam blind box thing. for $30 I got my money's worth. While I might have purchased the GM there's no way I would have bought the twin ball kit.

>>
>>15439751
Guy you just replied to, but hasn't there been more and more people getting into the hobby lately? It's less that they don't get into the hobby, it's that they don't improve. It's better that the weathered guy came here first, he'll improve a lot faster in comparison to reddit or whatever, provided he wants to and can accept criticism and whatnot. Or, it'll at least help as opposed to getting constantly praised for what's only a decent build. Reddit'll praise anything, though. It's sad.

Got any suggestions besides not liking damage that is accurate to scale and is frequently seen in the show per the very creators?

You just seem butt hurt for someone not agreeing with your subjective opinion of damage but I'm honestly asking in case you actually know what you're doing.

Sequence of paint and weathering:

Top coat over bare plastic.
Oil based gunk wash using mix of black, burnt umber and white.
Added damage with soldering iron.
Second top coat.
Filled in damage with a mix of metallic acrylics.
Dry brushed edges with light grey oil paint.
Brushed in rust effects using soft pastels that I filed down to a powder.
>>
>>15439765
I say generally less is more. Heavy battle damage is incredibly hard to make look good. To start focus on paint chipping, and maybe one or two bigger items. Don't slather on oil/grime/rust, apply it strategically a bit at a time until you get the effect you want.

Vidar all the way, is that even a question?
>>
>>15439813
It's a melee focused group build, though. The Vual is obviously better suited towards it even if the vidar is a cooler looking suit to begin with.
>>
>>15439765
With battle damage you're looking to tell a story. Imagine your gunpla is in a fight, how many enemies are there? How do they attack? How do does your gunpla respond to the attacks? If it's in the middle of a war does it have access to lots of replacement parts or does it have to make do and try to avoid as much damage as possible? How many fights has it been since your gunpla was completely serviced?
Then while imagining this you try and show that on the unit.

but anyway, that's what I do.
>>
>>15439765
the actual work you've put in is pretty good honestly, there's just a bit too much. Think about where damage and weathering would occur on the MS. Knees, shield, maybe shoulders. Like another anon said, tell a story, try to imagine the scenario where the mobile suit received the battle scars.

God yeah, it's so annoying seeing "Hey guise my 1st gunplay model" posts where there's awful nubs, bad sticker placement, and no panel lining going straight to the top because "Oh welcome to the community!" while actual good builds tend to get ignored unless they're REALLY good.

Not a terrible first attempt but like the other anon says you can always clean it up a bit and try again. A big part of weather is being very light on it as you are dirtying a 20 meter tall machine. Less is more. As always read the guide.

From what I've heard all you get are dragoon extensions that can pivot, a ZAFT base, and a metric SHITTON of details. What's the price difference? If you think some dragoon effects, another base, and waterslide decals are worth it, go for it, otherwise just hold out.
>>
>>15440591
The base is twice as much as a regular Action Base, though admittedly it's more fancy looking, and the waterslides are for the other SEED kits before it, and none of it is specifically for the Providence.

If neither of those two problems are dealbreakers then sure.

So I'm testing out some colors with plastic spoons today. I'm using Tamiya rattle cans, surface primer, and top coats. Should I prime the spoons first, or should I not even bother with that? I'm going to be painting pic related metallic for the colors and give the white parts a clear pearl finish.
>>
>>15440970
you gonna take care of those nubs first?
>>
>>15440991
Yes. I thought I got all of them during the build process. Apparently I missed a few. The ones on the shoulders red parts are already sanded down. I didn't really care much about the discoloration since I'm painting it. I just noticed the ones on the white parts of the shoulders and the blue part on the left arm.
>>
>>15440970
If you care about the result, do whatever is closest to what you're really gonna do. Colour on white and colour on dark looks different even for thick paints - you can look up tests people have done on spoons with this, even on camera you can see it. White spoons are obviously closer to primer, but still not the same.

ok primed my spoons. Should I let them cure the full 24 hours? or just wait a few hours till they're dry?
>>

Very gently try to wedge an xacto knife blade between parts and slowly wiggle the parts loose.
>>
>>15441080
>>15441008
I forgot to ask, Should I bother priming if I'm hand painting? I plan on hand painting the V-fin and other yellow parts gold with the metallic Gundam marker. I've heard good things about the gold and silver and most of the parts are pretty small. We'll see how it goes I may need to grab a can of gold to do some of the larger pieces.

What are the cheapest kits I can get that aren't 90:s kits or anything? A lot of IBO kits seem cheap, GM:s and hi-mock?
>>
>>15441476
HG IBO kits are pretty good for the price. The 1/100 IBOs are also good considering the price and the inner frame. Also, most of the parts from one IBO kit will fit onto another without issue. So they're great for kitbashing.
>>
>>15441476
The HG revives are pretty cheap and have very good articulation. I hear the IBO HGs are pretty good too, but I've never built one myself.

I got that from /m/ and you should take that with a grain of salt.
They're good for their PRICE. They don't hold a candle to HGUC kits being released nowadays, but they're also 500 yen cheaper on average.

Anything under 1300 yen in the HGIBO line I've experienced thus far generally has at least one glaring cost-cutting measure or poor design choice, from the Reginlaze hands, the Shiden's dumbass elbows and feet and floppy chestpiece, the Hyakuren knocking bits of its armor off with any leg posing, etc.
It's great for the price; don't expect it to be great overall however.

Being a mook lover, I haven't bought any gundam frames from HGIBO, so I assume and hope they're not as openly cheap as their sibling mook kits.

I have a Graze Kai, and I'm honestly not totally in love with it. Aesthetically I hate the silly high heeled feet and Bandai's poor (read: greedy) decision to release the more sensible ground type feet in an option kit. As well, no true hinge but rather a friction fit for the opening head visor-thing is just lazy as shit.

I also hate the fact that it suffers Zaku axe syndrome and it can't properly hold its own axe via friction/tension and it just rolls about in the hand.
>>
>>15441605
as much as i love my graze ritter, the biggest nitpick i have are lack of open palmed hands. i eventually got over the extreme high heels, but considering how much extra parts there are, they couldnt have added one small left open palmed hand for posing

if mobile suits are molded in those colors, then yeah, having stark silver beneath it wont make sense. just darken it cause it it looks out of place

The suit is a really fun build. It took a while doing it off and on for 20-30 minutes at a time, but its really well designed and the retractable arm on the backpack is nice. It's kind of a more realistic commando MS, and that kind of appealed to me.

Wait, did you mean the real suits or the models? I'd imagine the colors of the actual suits is painted on. I doubt they're really molded in bright colors like that. If you've ever had to cut open metals, they're usually pretty bright on the inside. Especially stuff like aluminum and whatnot.
>>
>>15442781
i meant real suits, thats why is said mobile suits not model kits. in the shows, i dont remember any times where a suit got scratched, shot, cut, etc and seeing silver underneath it, just darken version of that color. this can be explained with "it would be hard to animate", also cause its been a while since i've seen the older shows, but still, its been a question i had all these years

Current WIP.

I'm not really a big fan of the RX-78-2, but since my local store had one of the original RX-78-2 gunpla in stock, I thought it would be interesting to display the very first beside a modern version.

Originally, I thought the RG would be the best, same scale and all.
But after assembling one (on commision, not my own), I felt unimpressed by how fiddly it was.

So I went a grade up to MG, and decided on the 3.0 due to how intricate the RG-style coloring looks.
MG Origin ver. is newer and more posable, but I don't like the small head.

By the way, the copper stickers on the elbows are holding up very well.
I assembled the arms two months ago (I think), then had to put the whole thing on hold due to work.
The copper stickers haven't peeled off one bit. Maybe I just got lucky.
I do have waterslides for the rest of the kit's decals, to be done after assembly is complete.
>>
>>15443737
>I thought it would be interesting to display the very first beside a modern version
That's actually a pretty neat idea, I might even steal it and do it myself.

I think it probably would look better with the same scale (I actually have the RG myself), but don't blame you one bit for not wanting to deal with assembling the RG (like I said, I have the RG, FUCK that was a shitty kit to build).

No, casting hot as fuck metal isn't going to retain a pigment of any type. You can't color titanium red. You paint over it. Even if it's from the moon.
>>
>>15443754
I mean you can heat treat metal to get certain colors, maybe mix it with some shit (I've heard of mixing in rust to get a brownish red)
probably not gundam pastel red/blue/yellow though
>>
>>15443758
As silly as it is already to be painting military machines in bright pastel colors, using metallurgy casting and heat treating techniques specifically to change the colors of the metal for specific parts is even more ridiculous.

I must say, building this MG 3.0 is really fun, and it's really amazing how all the pieces interlock.

Also, I painted the eyes clear orange, the area around the eyes black, then cut out some leftover silver from RG Exia's sticker sheet to use behind the eyepiece.

It reflects lights perfectly, no fussy LED trickery needed.

Not only is it not that far of a stretch, it's what you should fucking be doing.

The idea that the base metal would be the same color as the exterior is absolutely retarded.

Trim down with hobby knife, 500 grit or similar to remove the remaining plastic, 1000 to get rid of "big" scratches, and keep going up from there to get back to the original shine
Just make sure to wetsand
It's also very recommended to make sanding sticks unless you want to end up with an uneven surface

20 minutes before using should be the bare minimum

So I got Tamyia's semi gloss topcoat by accident instead of their full on gloss coat. Will it be good enough to panel line and detail or will I need to get a can of gloss coat? Hey guys, I tried line paneling for the first time with gundam markers, and it looks like absolute shit. I've never done anything besides a handful of OOB builds and they still look better. With 2000 it'll still look a little dull compared to the rest of the part. In my experience I've had to go up to around 4000 to get a similar finish to the unsanded areas. You could also just sand the entire piece with the 2000 to give it an overall flatter finish
