In comparison to Ghost and Drive, Ex-aid is REALLY playing up the recurring Rider theme of the main protagonists drawing their power from the same source as the villains. Just like Bugsters are artificial beings that can manifest in the real world, the Riders need to be inoculated themselves so they can load up the game levels and transform into a Rider. It's almost like their Rider forms are literally bugsters, especially since we know now that the enemy Bugsters can level up like the Riders can.

Yeah, on one hand I wish the show would slow the fuck down and explain some of the aspects of how the Bugsters work, but considering what it seems to be building to, those details would probably be spoilers they're saving for later.

It's just nice to have a Rider series that plays so deeply with the Kamen Rider concept of the heroes' main power basically being the same as the monsters. Drive and Ghost didn't really emphasize that as much, but Ex-Aid looks to be using it as a major thematic element.

Something just occurred to me. This show references retro gaming, but in a subtle way also references retro Kamen Rider as well. The lines on Emu's face when using Mighty Brothers is reminiscent of the original Rider 1's scar lines from the manga, rider's needing special operations to use Gamer Drivers is a nod to how showa Riders had to be KAIZO NINGENs to become Riders. The Rider suits in this show are mostly regular fabric instead of foam rubber or plastic, a lot like retro showa Riders, even the mooks mostly just wearing regular clothes is kind of a throwback to how classic combatmen wore regular uniforms rather than monster suits. Everything about Ex-Aid so far has been surprisingly respectfully retro.
