I think the closest connection you can draw is that it's a reference to ghost ships, but the real answer is there is no explanation and they needed to sell more toys.

Man, a lot of Ghost's toyline was really lazy. The only thing that really impressed me was the main sword, since it could be a big sword, two small swords, or a gun, all by itself. Everything else was just kind of meh at best.

I think he kind of had the same problem as Takaharu's actor. He just couldn't do hot blood well, so all the stuff about burning his soul didn't seem genuine. It just wasn't as obvious since the character himself wasn't as cartoonish about it as Takaharu, but it was there hurting his performance overall.

The kid Takeru actor from Genesis pulled his catchphrase better than the actual Takeru's after he goes through character development, which shows how lacking he was.

Nine Riders total.

Four are the "Main Party" who use the generic four core classes: Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, Ranger.

They all gain forms based on levels - every 5 or so levels is an upgrade. Level 20 is obviously the final form. Main party gets to level 20.

Other four Riders cover the other core classes who form an almost rival party of sorts: Monk, Cleric/Ranger, Barbarian, Paladin. They get to level 15.

Major enemy's leading general is his own Rider who is an Antipaladin or something. Starts at level 10, ends at level 15.

Enemies are Wizard-like in that they're all based on proper fantasy monsters and such, who just happen to be under the control of major enemy Whatshisname. Instead of victim of the week, it's town of the week, where they're being plagued by monsters or whatever.

Gimmick can be dice that when rolled inside belt, always land on a side that reveals the Rider's helmet and makes a noise.
