***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

First off is the results for the "For Fun" round, the guys who couldn't receive the prize pool. With 60% of the vote the Beni-Shiki takes the round here.

Now for the meaty stuff. After calculating votes from 94 ballots, we have our three winners.

In third place with 63 points, we have the G-Bouncer Ground Type ! Their prize is an Action Base 2

Second place's winner is the Graze White Midnight, coming in at 124 points. They get a $15 High Grade of their choice (Going off Amazon prices)

Finally, the winner of this whole thing with a whopping 143 points is the RX-78-R Gundam Reinforced Type! Their prize is a $25 High Grade along with an Action Base 2

I'll be emailing the winners more information along with a reminder to send their mailing address later tonight. Congrats to the winners!
>>

>>14923059
Did Shiteagle really vote for his custom THAT many times? Only one first faveorite and second favorite, but four third favorites.
>>
>>14923059
Question about the prizes.

I remember back when this was being planned that people were talking about donating towards the prizes with gift cards. Do the kits have to be something off of amazon or can it be from where ever?
>>
>>14923059
Fuck I think i was almost 3rd.
>>
>>14923078
It's mainly what's available on Amazon so I can just ship through them and not have to deal with shipping the prizes out myself. If what the winners want is a few dollars more (Say if second place wanted something that was $18 dollars instead of $15 that's fine) Just keep it around that range.

As for the gift cards thing that mainly came up due to me having a visa card with about $60 lying around with nothing to spend on, so I'm using it for this. I'm not really up to trading gift cards around online.
>>
>>14923069

Bought myself a star wars kit today to change the pace, painted the traitor stick with silver instead of stickers. Articulation ain't to great but iits fine standing there, lookin glossuly

ALMOST bought the Zeta Gundam 2.0 mg, but changed my mind at the last minute, I still kinda want it but have heard controversial opinions of it, likewise with the MK-II 2.0

>>14922988
Could you like, dip that thing in a tub of panelwash and get good results after blowdrying it

somehow, the thought of adding panel lines by dipping a gunpla model in it seems entertaining
>>
>>14923059
Hey I did pretty good in comparison! Neat
>>
>>14923097
A few years ago when I got both of the 2.0 kits it was at a time where I heard nothing but praise for them.

I've only built the MkII and that kit is phenomenal engineering-wise, but I have a few grievances with it:

1. FUCK THE CLOTH HOSING THAT SHIT SHOULD STAY AT PERFECT GRADE, JESUS CHRIST WHY WOULD YOU MAKE SOMEONE CUT OUT SPECIFIC LENGTHS OF CLOTH HOSE JUST FUCKING MOLD THE TEXTURE INTO THE PART HOLY SHIT
2. the way they went about with waist articulation was kinda stupid, having this plastic ring that just settles in there and doesn't flex with the frame so much as it gets shifted about. I'm not explaining it all too well but you'd know what I'm talking about if you look at assembly.
3. Some of the plastic is brittle as hell. Like "drop and it breaks" brittle. Maybe that was a problem with the production run mine came from but that left me kinda mad that arbitrary parts would shatter if they slipped and fell off.

All in all it's a great kit, it's just also kinda frustrating for reasons relating to it being a mini-PG (and I've heard the RG is much the same experience, imagine a PG downscaled to 1/144, that's some bullshit right there). Ever since, I've been hesitant to touch anything from the Zeta 2.0 other than the stand that comes with it (because that one is actually a stand as opposed to the display base that you get with MkII). I can imagine shit breaking real easily on the Zeta thanks to the transformation gimmick, but at the same time I can only imagine how impressive it all comes together.

Finally decided to stop using stickers and hand paint details using tamiya acrylics. I'm seeing different opinions online about whether to let each coat cure overnight or for just an hour or so between. What is the best amoumt of time to wait? I plan on applying about 3 or so coats for details such as the eyes and the thought of having to spend 3 days just to complete a tiny bit of painting seems very slow.

"I picked up several of the 1/144 scale Gundam ground War kits. These kits feature a Gundam and two EDF hovertrucks and another has a Zaku with two Zeon tanks and hovercycles. Both have some 1/144 scale infantry, but not much, and the Zeon troop is only an officer firing a pistol.

While I can use the existing EDF soldiers (at arms and firing poses), I need some Zeon troops. My thought was to use WW2 German heads, since the Zeon Helmet is similar, but I would prefer actual-looking Zeon troops.

There is a Magella Attack kit that has 3 crew standing outside. Maybe I can cut their heads off and fix them to EDF bodies?

Any ideas?"

I'me gonna have a budget of about CAD340, I'll tell you my options for what to spend it on and which one you think is worth it the most

>2 1/100 kits and a 3rd party PG
>3 large MGs
>2 MGs and a 1/60 no grade

The reasoning with the first choice is that I want to test the waters with a bootleg to see if PGs are worth triple the price for an official one
>>
>>14923279

Biggest problem is that it cant hold its cool sten looking machine gun. Though if you have the sniper II, you can easily fix that.

Actually makes sense, especially with the K9 dog pack.

Since the entire fight was about using the K9 unit's to distract, while Zeon solders ambushed the enemy's unit and destroyed it with explosives.

Congratulations to everyone who participated!

I'm glad there was such a great showing, though I'm sad the Full Armor Extreme Gundam didn't make it into the top three since I felt it had the most work put into it and the most potential for growth from the builder.

I'm very grateful that so many people liked my White Midnight, and I promise to try even harder for the next competition. I'll especially focus on improving my shitty handbrushing skills.
>>
Is it worth investing in Gundam Markers? What do you even do with them really? Why would you want other colours than black?
>>
How's the HG Exia? Is it an alright kit for beginners?
>>
>>14923559
Some colors lend themselves well to being panel lined with brown or grey. For instance, I think Green kits look really nice when panel lined in the brown. Personal choice though I guess. Grey on white looks good to, imo.
>>
>>14923059
Thanks for everyone that voted for me (G-Bouncer Ground Type). I do actually need another Action Base, so that's cool - I like the sound of a Graze group build in the new year, since I've got an assembled but otherwise untouched 1/100 Graze Kai that I'm short of ideas on anyway.

>>14923559
Grey is much better for lining white than Black is, just see Dalong's reviews for why. I actually find the only thing I line in Black is Grey itself, and use Brown for Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. Blue I mostly use Grey for.

Any HG is good for beginners. I don't have the Exia, but from having built the 00 and the Quan[t], it should be perfectly fine.

Not wrong but not right, Astraea is based off of a conversion kit from one of the hobby magazines, and is in essence that kit with the standard Exia, and then armaments.
Exia R2 comes with new leg pieces that give it a leg swivel despite the balljoint, as an improvement to the design. This is the same mold that the Amazing Exia uses by the way.
>>
>>14923721
The Graze is a simple but well-executed grunt design that's clean, uncomplicated and subtle. That's why.
>>
>>14923753
The Astraea is a great little kit, and comes with almost all the parts you need to make the Exia anyway. From what I remember it just lacks the clear head pieces and the centre plate of the GN Sword's shield.

Daban. DM has brittle but hard plastic that's just not suitable for toys.

There's a technique for batch painting in mini war gaming where you actually dunk your models in a pot of wash. Most people just use a big brush since its more paint-efficient.

Considering how panel-lining with paint relies heavily on capillary action, I doubt that would work well on gunpla.

MG AGE-3 (And the FX) were actually never officially announced.

Bandai just occasionally shows off rapid prototypes of kits they're considering at hobby conventions in order to gauge interest. Sales of AGE related stuff weren't that good and after doing MGs of the first two gens leads they weren't confident in AGE-3 and FX's ability to sell so they sort of tested the waters by showing off a prototype (Which are basically just 3D printed statues).
>>
>>14924311
Most mistakes will be due to you not paying attention and breaking/cutting something incorrectly. When you first start painting your models, your mistakes will come from being unfamiliar with painting miniatures (visible brush strokes, chipping your paint, paint pooling from being too thick, etc).

The plastic parts are all attached together to a "runner" by "gates." You should use a pair of sharp, flat-sided clippers to cut the part off of the runner. Depending how sharp the clippers are/how close you are/the phase of the moon, if you clip as close as possible to the plastic piece, you will dent or damage the piece. Imagine a flat field with a tree in the middle. You use a giant pair of scissors to try and cut off the tree. You'll either end up with a stump sticking out of the ground or a hole in the earth. For this reason, most people recommend clipping close to the plastic part, but then using a hobby knife and or sanding paper to clean up.

Have read the guide.

Aieee!

I thought it was "just" a model, dab a bit of glue and slap her together.
>>
>>14924356
I know, but that doesn't mean they can't whore out the Zeon designs a bit more, since they probably won't remake 0079.
>>
>>14924359
Gunpla doesn't normally require any glue whatsoever actually. People who know what they're doing (or are trying to) seal up seam lines with plastic cement and putty, but because these guys are so posable there's no need to petrify it.
>>
>>14924212
Depends on several factors, mainly budget but also whether or not you prefer certain paints over others. Personally I know many people starting out go for Iwata products. The Iwata Neo is cheap, but only sprays acrylics. That's not bad if you like acrylics, though. I have a Badger 105 Patriot, it works fine for all types of paints and is of similar price range. If it's possible don't go for a cheap Chinese knockoff, getting a brand-name one will often net you some warranty (Badger has one) or easy parts replacement at least. Badger and Iwata stuff is carried in stores often.

Compressors are a different can of worms that I'll allow others to give info on, dunno a lot about them.
>>
>>14924359
These things are like baby's first model. No paint or glue required, although they do look better if you paint them.
>>

>>
>>14924381
It's gonna be cold until spring, cause I live up in the northeast, and I used a spraycan.

I guess its time to buy an airbrush.
>>
>>14924382
Only the really old or really shitty ones are hardcore, and most military modelers avoid them when possible. More modern ones from decent companies go together exceptionally well and are made of good quality plastics. They just need glue and paint to make them.
>>
>>14924382

I made one of AMT's old ass car models and that shit was a fucking nightmare unmatched by anything else I've ever done. Even Gundam models from the 80s and one of Wave's 1/100 plastic Five Star Stories kits were better engineered and fit together than it did.

Also no websites really exist that sell specific parts like you might find for, say, Warhammer 40k. If you really only want a certain piece from a specific kit you're better off seeing if you can make a deal with another gunpla guy. Better yet just keep the other parts - you'll be surprised how much they come in handy for repairs and kitbashes.

Is the MG line officially dead
>>
>>14925147
Yes.
>>
>>14925147
It's pretty much been dead since they stopped 1 kit per month and got rid of ABS inner frames.
>>
>>14925147
Probably

I guess MGs don't sell well due to the size and cost compared to HGs and RGs
>>
>>14924326
IIRC R2 comes with the parts for standard Exia anyway but R2 is so small of a deviation that you might not even notice the difference unless you think about it.
I read into the manuals and runners on dalong when I look into buying a kit, and I own a decent amount of them myself.
Also when I started it was with 00 models and I was seriously upset when my Exias were less than ideal, it took me a good while to get my sense with kit builds and articulation to the understanding I have it now.
If I were you I'd just buy both, they're both pretty good kits.

The MG line has been dead ever since they announced the Tallgeese II and Crossbone X-2 were P-Bandai releases. Prior to that P-Bandai was either just repaints (Unicorn Nemos, Black Tri-stars Zaku II-S) or accessory packs (Ballute System stand-alone release, Nu Ver. Ka Double Funnel set). After that they knew they could put out anything that wasn't a main protagonist's main suit on P-Bandai and it would sell

Here's a list of MG P-Bandai releases that probably would've been fine with just being a regular release/are different enough from their original kit that they'd be fine to release)
>Tallgeese 2/3
>Crossbone X2/X3
>Astray Red Frame (The one that's just the regular red frame with the regular backpack/shield/rifle)
>GM Cannon
>Jesta Cannon
>Altron Gundam
>Gundam HeavyArms Custom
>Powered GM (If it wasn't a weird unholy union between the GM Type C and Gundam Mk. II 2.0 released over a decade after both kits)

Stuff like the Hyaku Shiki Kai and the two non-Amuro Evolve Zetas are obscure enough that they'd warrant a P-Bandai release. Same goes for pure repaints like Full Frontal's Geara Doga, the Special Forces AGE-2 Normal, and the multitude of Zaku IIs they've repainted for obscure manga/video game ace pilots.

As far as group build suggestions go I'd rather not do the GM one so shortly after /toy/ did it. That doesn't mean we can't do something similar to it. The Graze groupbuild seems to be a popular idea, but theoretically we could do a Zeon MS groupbuild to mirror the GM one (OYW Zeek suits + Modified versions of those suits from other series (Gelgoog Marine, Zaku F2000, Gyancelot, etc)).

Of course, we could do some other suggestion along with those and do another strawpoll, maybe throw in some of the more popular choices from the last strawpoll that didn't come in first.

So, I'm gonna be buying some kits for Christmas. My cousin is getting an HGUC Revival Gundam Mk2 Titans, I want to get a MG, but I don't really know which one. Suggestions? I wanted Freedom 2.0 but I've heard the kit breaks easily, other than that I've been considering Amazing Red Warrior, RX-78-2 3.0 and RX-78-2 Origin (the worst thing about it imo is its head, so I dunno).

Opinions? Other suggestions?

Everyone that I know personally, along with myself, have had no issues with the Freedom 2.0. I have seen people online that have broken the part where the thigh connects to the waist, but if you are careful it shouldn't be an issue. The Freedom 2.0 and the RX-78-2 Oirigin are probably two of the best MGs to exist so far imo

Oh boy, oh boy. Just picked up some fresh swag at the gunpla store today.

I also picked up an action base for the Kampfer, but right now thats holding up my Man Rodi

Practice makes perfect.

Pro tip, narrow foam tipped paint pens or large tip dried out fineliner pens make for great detailing brushes. Thats what I do with my faber castell fineliners when they dry out

Yes but only the older version comes with pic related as a bonus. You have to get the P-Bandai for the missile pods for the revive.

there is nothing like seeing a smooth expanse of polished plastic where there was once an ugly nub. Well, except maybe Lunamaria pulling aside her black lace panties with a "come fuck me" expression on her face or a beautifully spreading panel wash.

If you were in Georgia I might be able to help but you're in one of the parts of the South that all the Yankees like to use to make generalizations about the entire region. You probably aren't going to find anything there but moonshiners and mountains.

Chattanooga would be your best bet but I wouldn't get your hopes up.
>>
>>14926626
>tfw no Georgia gunpla friends
>>
>>14926636
Both Animezing Escape in McDonough and Galactic Quest Comics in Buford have regular build events, monthly and weekly respectively. Not to mention at least 3 other locations in the metro, not including B&N, that sell gunpla. Look hard enough and you'll find somebody here who's into the hobby.

Now, if you live in DEEP Georgia, like anywhere south of Macon, see >>14926626 just replace mountains with cow pies. You're out of luck.
>>
>>14926677
Also, replace moonshiners with methheads.

I took a look in the yellow pages to see what was around, and I found a ton of hobby shops but God knows which ones are good and which are bad.

Figured I'd ask and see if anyone had some personal advice. If you have suggestions for Georgia those would be good, too. They might not be too far away.

Kennesaw, which is down I-75 from Chat-town, actually boasts the largest Hobbytown USA in existence. It's about the size of your average Publix.

Unfortunately, their gunpla selection is generally shit and often outclassed by the other Atlanta location in Duluth, which ironically, is about the size of your average Quicktrip. Funny how that works right?

Aside from those, your best bet is either Character World at the Mall of Georgia, or Oxford Comics and Games, inside the perimeter near Lenox Square Mall

To be honest all of the older OVA's suits could do with a 2.0 MG.
The GPs, Alex, Ground gundam, the various GMs and the Kampfer.

>My decanted primer has all dried up, fine whatever
>Try to get milk consistency by mixing yellow paint+thinner in paint cup
>Nothing shoots out
>Yellow paint drips from nozzle
>Realize that the primer I shot through it before probably clogged the needle, the shitty O-ring in the nozzle has probably corroded, and the unthinned paint pre-mixing didn't help

Inept idiocy aside, simple green/purple power in an ultrasonic cleaner will clean this shit out, right? Or will that be too much for my cheap chink airbrush?

It's time:
http://hobbynotoriko.yumenogotoshi.com/hgce-strike-freedom.html
>>
>>14927327
Why do people like the Strike Freedom?

I'm not asking ironically, I genuinely don't get it. Am I missing something?
>>
>>14927516
Sans the gold joints which I think look retarded, not to mention the source material from which it's from which is also pretty retarded, I like the general aesthetics of it; It's a classicish Gundam design, streamlined, Symmetrical, has a neat beam saber gimmick, and a pretty sweet backpack. It's overall a feddieish design but with funnels.
>>
>>14927516
I don't get why people like anything from Wing besides the Heavyarms or Epyon either, it's just personal preference I suppose
>>
>>14927542
I can sort of understand it as an evolution of the Freedom design which took notes from Providence, but yeah, the gold joints were retarded.

>>14927543
Most likely, yeah. I only really like the Heavyarms, Tallgeese and the Wing grunts, desu. Most of the Gundams were kind of overdone to me.
>>
>>14927516
Being a SEEDfag, I think it's a wonderful design.

It feels very UCish, the inner gold frame makes it stand out compared to other designs, and the wings give it a dynamic pose.
>>
>>14927548
I personally like the CE designs a lot too, they felt like the perfect balance to me. They fall in-between UC and more modern and crazy designs to me.
>>
>>14926969

try with plain water first
>>
>>14927558
The Strike is probably my favorite CE design, it's a good mix between modern and UC, like you said. It's just stylized enough, IMO.
>>
>>14927327
Gonna admit, I did not expect that to look so good and have so few stickers.
>>
>>14927567
It's definitely up there for me, the grey is a really subtle way of making the design pop on the white so that it doesn't look bland. Although I am a fan of most gundam designs, even completely ridiculous ones, the Strike was definitely a less gaudy looking gundam but still kept a lot of the formula to make it look traditional

After accidentally ordering Polycarbonate spray I decided to do a test piece just to experiment. I figured because polycarbonate is usually sprayed inside clear plastic RC bodies that primer wouldn't be needed. However, after two coats there are these strange "smooth" spots, which happen to be where the holes are on the back to connect the inside of the shield are. Do you think this is from lack of primer or just the fact that polycarbonate normally dries so rough?
>>
>>14928149
could it be eating through the plastic?

Not him, but are there any recommended techniques/cleaners for cleaning airbrushes? I take the nozzle apart and rinse them out with warm water until I don't see any more paint, and I've got some cleaning brushes I use periodically but not every time. I'm not having any problems with my airbrush but I'm still not convinced I'm getting everything
