Anyone else reading this? Came out a few days ago.
Source is Ourai no Gahkthun/Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning. It's about an alternate history version of Nikola Tesla who becomes a Kamen Rider-esque warrior (complete with scarf) to fight against a secret society in England. Has power armor, giant mechs, and pretty over the top fights.
Since so few /m/ VNs get translated just thought I'd point it out for anyone looking for more.
No clue, but so far Walther Ritz has shown up. His power suit makes him GOTTA GO FAST man and he can accelerate at the speed of sound. Reminds me a bit of Straight Cougar.
Anyway, there's a demo on the main site that covers the first and 3rd chapter of the story if you want to check it out more. Though the full thing is already out so you can just into that too.
Again just trying to raise awareness of another /m/ VN since so few of them actually get translated.
I'd never heard of Ritz before and had to look him up, so I may be showing my ignorance here but even after looking him up I've no idea why someone would choose to use him as a reference character for such a setting, never mind why he'd be chosen as the speed demon character. Is there any particular significance to the guy I'm missing to say that he was picked for a speed based character or picked at all? He didn't really seem to do much after all and just kind of died early.
I'd have thought there'd be far more prominent scientists and engineers to choose from around that point of the turn of the century basically, and it confuses me why this guy, who appears to be a bit of nobody was the one chosen.
There's a free trial that you can try that lets you play through 2 chapters and gives you a general impression without spoiling too much. Basically enough to get you hooked and want more if it catches your interest.
I do agree that $45 is a bit high, especially since it's just a digital download. If it was a physical release I wouldn't have minded as much. But I still bought it anyway in hopes it would encourage more /m/ stuff to be translated.
Really not trying to shill, but yeah I'd say check out the trial and if it interest you enough go ahead and buy the full version.
Yeah, I'm not sure. Tesla's suit gives him power over electricity which makes sense, but Walther's ability doesn't seem to relate to any of his theories in history.
Walther's actual power is to move the world around him and accelerate inanimate objects, but again I'm not smart enough to know if that relates to any of his real life theories or philosophies. He does seem to be kind of a nobody, especially compared to most of the other historical figures that are re-imagined in the story.
Though maybe that's the reason why he was picked. He could have been a blank enough slate that they just decided to stick him with gotta go fast powers for rule of cool or something.
I know, but I didn't want to just slap up a link because again I'd rather it get actual sales to hopefully motivate them to translate other titles. Though I understand people not wanting to pay $45 for a VN.
Tesla is pretty hammy as well, though in his case it's because he's purposely trying to adhere to the ideal vision of an English gentleman. At the same time he's also kind of a dickhead.
Haven't seen any guides, but it's pretty basic. If you don't pick the right choices during the "Exercise" segments then you'll automatically get a bad end at the end of the chapter instead of progressing to the next one. Choosing the right choices allows you to advance to the next chapter and also unlocks bonus scenes.
Though you can "cheat" by choosing the 4th option which let's you bypass the wrong choices. But picking that one locks you out getting the bonus scenes. So you have to manually pick the right answers to progress and unlock the bonus scenes.
Basically pick the answers that don't involve giving up or accepting your fate. Like here the correct choice is to Run Away.
You can tell if you picked the right choice or not depending on Tesla's response. If he chastises you for giving up too early then that means you fucked up. If he praises you for being strong and resisting your fate then you picked right. Just quick save before each choice.
I'm honestly not trying to shill. This is my first time buying a MG release and then I hesitated a bit because $45 is pretty steep for a VN. The only other thing they released that interested me was Dengeki Stryker and I didn't pay for that because it was kind of eh.
I'm genuinely just bringing it up to get others interested because it's a pretty cool story with a lot of /m/ elements. If you want to pirate it, go ahead.
Forgot to mention that the bonus scenes aren't unlocked until the end of the chapter. They let you see what side characters were doing between major events or when they weren't around Neon, so it adds more depth their personalities and motivations.
>~ What a shining braves ~
>--Brightness, the thing of which it thinks so much. --What who envies
>--However, nobody's fingertip had touched it until now.
Sigh. I'm not crazy about the nigh-universal "every character is young and good looking" cast. Too same-y.
Edison already fucked Tesla over earlier in the timeline (nuking New York in the process) and was already defeated by someone else in another game.
Also he's actually an avatar of Nyarlathotep.
This universe is linked to Demonbane's because the writers are BFFs. Ultharathotep from this also appears in the Demonbane sequel manga DYN Freaks.
Also some suspect that the writer of this used to post on /m/ under a trip
>Edison already fucked Tesla over earlier in the timeline (nuking New York in the process) and was already defeated by someone else in another game.
Just to elaborate- Edison was already introduced and defeated in an earlier game and New York getting fucked over took place before that.
Tesla was introduced in this game and they retconned the timeline so that Edison was his archnemesis and he was trying to save New York but got defeated.
You think that's bad? Sakurai and Haganeya fucking love Fate and Sakurai worked on Fate/Prototype and Fate/GO which is why Babbage and Tesla look so similar to her versions (though not identical because the Steampunk universe belongs to Liar)
>Where did the timeline diverge?
Steampunk world Edison is actually Nyarlathotep from the end of time of another world
Also Tesla studied under Babbage and got his powers from one of Ben Franklin's experiments.
What is this? An Outer God for ants?
Also it crops out M from Sharnoth being included.
None of the girls are sluts but jesus christ do they have some TITS on them
Megami Tensei Nyarlathotep is in the back in the left, Great Father (final boss of Persona 2 Sin) is next to him. All the way to the right is The M from Sharnoth, to his left is Kamiizumi Nobutsuna from Alicematic. The thing in the middle-back is the Crawling Chaos from Wild Arms (pretty sure its name was mangled in the translations though).
Right in front is of course Nyaruko's Kamen Rider parody form.
Also Narukami Chikage from DYN Freaks is next to Edison and under Great Father.
>A Cthulhu made up of all the party members' fathers
Great Father is such a great design.
>the Crawling Chaos from Wild Arms (pretty sure its name was mangled in the translations though).
They didn't even bother to translate it and just left it in romanized Japanese in the earlier games too.
It has very slightly different designs in each game, that one is 3's, the one in the composite Nyarl image is 2's in particular since 2 gets the most love from Nyaruko-san because of Knight Blazer.
>Megami Tensei Nyarlathotep is in the back in the left,
By "back in the left", I'm gonna assume you meant far left in the back. That's the huge face to the left of the bat-winged, crowned humanoid?
>Great Father (final boss of Persona 2 Sin) is next to him.
The bat-winged, crowned humanoid?
>All the way to the right is The M from Sharnoth,
The pile of body parts and entrails?
They wanted to start with the newest and shiniest looking one first. Though I guess starting with Gahkthun isn't too terrible when the games are relatively standalone. Though you miss out on cool references and world building established/continued by previous titles.
I just hope those fuckers would move faster and actually start announcing the other games in the first place.
Work on Gahkthun was already being done and they just bought the translation so they could distribute it. As far as I know no one has started on Valusia yet. The games are self-contained enough that you can play them on their own, but you do miss out on various cross series references and world building.
They did say they would be interested in funding more Liar-soft titles depending on how well Gahkthun sold though.
>MG basing things off of sales
Maybe if it weren't so easy to
reverse engineer the portion of the wrapper that matters and make an unwrapper that should be able to unwrap versions 1 through 7for the bulk of their releases
is this from a fandisc or something? the art in the vndb pictures looks different.
Same company, yeah.
If you haven't already you should check out Inganock as well. All the games in the "what a beautiful" series have subtle references to each other if you pay attention and there's a lot of shared world building between them.
Just this, Sharnoth, and Inganock.
The repetitiveness is just something you end up getting used to and just the writer's style. Expect to read them describing the garden and Tesla's transformation scene 50+ times in this as well. I'm not going to argue about any deep meanings or themes behind the repeating descriptions. It doesn't feel as bad in this because the chapters and overall story are better paced though.
>tfw no cute assistant to make you breakfast in the morning
>shiei no sona-nyl ever
why did they translate the worst one out of the series
gahkthun is a pretty fun ride but the plot/characters are such garbage
thank god the japanese isnt as complicated as it is in sharnoth otherwise itd take me more time to read through it
Tesla is such an awkward old man. He needs to get with the times.
That would be cheating on his waifu, which is something a perfect gentleman simply does not do.
He's a tired old man that's out of touch with people and just says with he feels like without thinking about the consequences. It isn't until >>13703257 that he realizes how blunt he can be at times at starts getting a little self-conscious about it.
Conversely his head is kind of up his ass so he doesn't really give a fuck.
So I really am reading about a old man playing superhero.
Yes. She's the main character and heroine. Tesla is the hero, but most of the game unfolds from her point of view and perspective. Though it does switch over to Tesla's perspective from time to time, mainly for the fight scenes.
There's other girls who want his lightning rod but Tesla is way too old and tired to put up with their shenanigans.
Then it goes right back to chuuni battles shortly after.
I have to say, Walther's suit was cooler.
It's story related. Both of Neon's eyes are golden and all the members of the Governing Council (the group Tesla is opposing) are one golden eye. Don't want to spoil too much but it basically let's you see shit normal people can't see and other supernatural stuff.
From the same company as this there's Sekien no Inganock and Shikkoku no Sharnoth. All of them are part of running line known as the "what a beautiful" series and take place in the same universe with various connections between them. They're not considered sequels to each other and you can read them standalone with no problem, but they do have various references to each other and share world building.
Inganock is about a doctor in an isolated city that summons a Stand to fight against Monsters. Sharnoth is about an alternate history Agatha Christie who teams up with some asshole calling himself Sherlock Holmes to solve mysteries involving people getting murdered by Metacreatures. These are just basic descriptions of course and the stories are deeper than that.
There's another title by the same company translated called Cannonball, but it doesn't have anything to do with the "what a beautiful" series and is instead about a legendary grand prix in space. The story is more simple and lighthearted and there's a bigger emphasis on unlocking sex scenes, but it's a fun read.
Demonbane if you haven't read it already.
The Muv-Luv Trilogy.
Dengeki Stryker is amusing and doesn't take that long to finish either. Plus the fandisc/sequel for it is translated as well.
Trample on Schatten is a funny, Toku-inspired VN that's being translated but since it's being done by Jast USA it will probably be another 6 years before it gets released.
Nah, it happened. Reich just made her think it was a dream.
The Governing Council and Tesla can use this magic called "Suppression" and hypnotic suggestion on people which basically allows them to see what they want them to see or mess with their memories so they believe something different happened. More or less the memory eraser thing from Men in Black.
It's also a convenient way for them to have the mech battles without having to deal with the aftermath of normal citizens panicking. There's a part later on where Tesla is using his mech to fight another mech while Neon and her friends are like 10 feet away in a mansion, but the other members of the Governing Council use Suppression on them so they're completely oblivious to the entire fight even though it's taking place like right outside the window.
So Reich hit it and quit it and made her think it was all a dream so she wouldn't bother him anymore.
>so she wouldn't bother him anymore.
but she only sent him one letter, and that was because she was a indecisive fuck that never dared to put in into the mail box like a fucking trillion times until the broadcast Tesla forces him to make
Not him, but Inganock in particular was vague as hell with a lot of its terminology even if you were already familiar with the world between stories.
Not everyone catches onto things as quickly so the encyclopedia in Gakhthun being there as a reference point is nice if something is really confusing you. Plus it also gives a lot of background info on the setting in general and stuff like the history of the Academia and the different departments. Things that aren't required to follow the story but supplemental stuff that's neat to know.
No need to be hostile.
>the Encyclopedia is a big help
indeed, it was the first thing I decided to read after the first chapter
I barely remember jackshit from Sharnot so the info of the world setting is welcome
I've also seen them referred to as the WAB series due to sharing the same subtitle naming scheme. Though Gahkthun's subtitle is "what a shining" so I guess calling them the Steampunk series makes more sense in that case.
There's no reason to get mad over something so minor. I apologize if I offended you.
I just said that you were right and conceded that calling it the Steampunk series is correct, so I don't know why you're still trying to pick a fight. I'm sorry for getting it wrong and won't refer to it as such in the future.
Did you not see
There's a fight scene every chapter, but the downtime between that has to be filled with something.
They were apparently far enough away from the main part of the Academia that no one saw the full scale, and Florence was using Suggestion to keep Neon and the other oblivious while the fight went on.
Still, I imagined Florence sitting there like this the whole time.
Suggestion, and they probably had their memories tampered with afterward as well even if they did notice something.
I'm not saying that it's not ridiculous, but that's the explanation they give.
This entire scene.
Everything between the battles is sickeningly adorable.
I assume they are watching an horror film given Neon's face
haven't reached it but I guess it is hilarious
Yup. You're actually not too far from the scene.
"Tesla could not stand the sight of pearls, to the extent that he refused to speak to women wearing them. When his secretary wore pearl jewelry, he sent her home for the day. No one knows why he had such an aversion, but Tesla had a very particular sense of style and aesthetics, Carlson said, and believed that in order to be successful, one needed to look successful. He wore white gloves to dinner every night and prided himself on being a “dapper dresser.”
Every photograph of Tesla, he said, is very carefully constructed to capture his “good side.”
"Tesla had what’s known as a photographic memory. He was known to memorize books and images and stockpile visions for inventions in his head. He also had a powerful imagination and the ability to visualize in three dimensions, which he reportedly used to control the terrifying vivid nightmares from which he suffered from as a child. It’s in part what makes him such a mystical and eccentric character in popular culture, Carlson said. He was also known for having excessive hygiene habits, born out of a near-fatal bout of cholera as a teenager."
"He claimed that he needed only two hours of sleep a night, although he occasionally took an afternoon nap. Tesla hated round objects and jewelry, and could not bear to touch hair. Also he was obsessed with the number 3 and had a habit of polishing each point of the dining room before dining, using precisely 18 napkins."
"Tesla described to his funder and business partner, J.P. Morgan, a new means of instant communication that involved gathering stock quotes and telegram messages, funneling them to his laboratory, where he would encode them and assign them each a new frequency. That frequency would be broadcast to a device that would fit in your hand, he explained. In other words, Tesla had envisioned the smart phone and wireless internet, Carlson said, adding that of all of his ideas, that was the one that stopped him in his tracks."
"I am a man who tries to be as much of a gentleman as possible. Thus, I swear to the skies that I will protect and fight for you."
"Evil spirits exist in this world. Sometimes, those spirits also take human form"
"I look forward to your endeavors, master"
"We have no time to just stand here. The world and the future is waiting for you!"
"Zeus, Indra, Thor, Perkunas, and Thunderbird. From antiquity, man revered thunder and lightning."
"No problem. If you are my master, then I shall be the teacher that shows you the way."
"The holy grail. The almighty wish-granting vessel. A truly intriguing research subject."
"As a heroic spirit, I am thunder and lightning itself. Thus, I love the sky."
"Watch yourself. You might get shocked."
There's also how he's referred to as 雷電王 and when Edison is mentioned as his rival, Edison has the title 発明王 which are both things Sakurai came up with in Steampunk (Babbage as 発明王 too).
Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE running from monsters brought forth by the refusal of a group of people to acknowledge the changes that tommorow might bring while acting as bait so Nyarlathotep can kill them for Sharnoth, I played the game ages ago so I'm probably wrong, haven't played Ignarock yet.
That's not a joke, Sakurai was literally super into Shadowrun at the time and acknowledges that it influenced the shit out of Inganock, as if it wasn't obvious from the cyberwear and street samurai and all.
Oh and in fact there's a fan-made Inganock tabletop RPG that uses a modified version of Shadowrun's ruleset.
According to the writer herself
Celenaria: Gear Antique
Sharnoth: Cthulhu by Gaslight
Does he have OCD and a phobia of balls in this one?
Eh, who knows. It's apparently doing decently in sales according to MG even though VNs are easy as fuck to pirate, so that might give them a bit more incentive.
Doddler said on twitter a while ago when asked about it that it's a possibility, so it could go either way.
I like Berta's dueling outfit but what purpose does the open back serve?
