We don't really have a major/minor system here in the UK like they do in some other countries in the USA. If you wanted to do a degree in Biology for example, you'd only study Biology (which would be divided up into "units", each covering a particular subject, graded via exams/coursework/projects).

You choose your degree when you apply for university, which is usually around 9 months or so before it starts (although there's a big rush in the summer where people try and grab up unclaimed places for certain courses - it's called "clearing" in the UK)

Nothing like my time in classe préparatoire. Almost a Bsc. worth of biology, geology, maths, physics, and chemistry crammed into just two years. Plus a bit of literature, English, Spanish, geography and Latin. 45 hours weeks just counting classes and practice exams.

The British system focuses on specialisation from quite early on. Starting from age 16, most people will only study 3-5 subjects until age 18 (e.g. in my case, English, Biology, Maths, Physics). So no more history lessons, no more geography, no more French, etc. after age 16.

When you get to university, the idea is that you focus solely on your core subject and don't deviate too much outside of it. The core curriculum is entirely related to your degree, and most optional units of study are very closely related too.

It's for this reason that a BSc/BA is only 3 years in the UK, while a Master's is 1 year (full-time).

Collège (normally ages 10-14) is one track for all. Lycée is the next three years. Well actually I've found that having a good grasp of English helps one understand physics better. For instance momentum = mass x velocity. Pretty cut and dried right?
