Does anyone on here actually own anything that old?
>>34904938
Yes
>>34904950
Post proof.
>>34904818
Does an 1888 commission rifle count as antique even if the Turks later converted it to 8mm like most of them?
>>34904983
Borderline, but acceptable.
I want a Gras, so I can pretend to be Greek removing Kebab.
>>34905000
Czech'd those trips. Also, I mean in terms of purchasing one in American law. The only thing I own close to that age is my Gewehr 98.
>>34904938
I have a Swede from 1900
>>34905040
Just found a calguns post from 2015 referring specifically to 88/05/35s, and the ATF letter in it states they are considered antiques. Whether or not that has changed since then I don't know, that's just what I found after a quick google search.
>tfw I will never own a baker rifle
>>34905040
Yeah, I think it'd be antique.
>you will never bayonet darkies with your martini
>>34905040
Yes.
If the receiver was made before 1898 then it's legally an antique and not a firearm according to the ATF.
You can find Finn nuggets sold as antiques since the receiver was made before 1898 even though they were rebuild by Finland.
Posting my oldest Nugget, Finnish capture of course. [SA] marked with spliced stock, rear sight remarked for meters and D166 ballistics.
I haven't shot it yet and it's giving me the 'surp twitches...
>>34904971
I don't, but a few martini Henrys, gewer 88s, krags, and trapdoor muskets had been posted
>>34904818
i own a 1895 chili mauser in 7mm all matching even the cleaning rod
>>34904938
>>34904818
Pfft.
Where can I find 8mm Mauser FMJ in stock that isn't Hornady's $27 a box shit?
>>34904938
Yes. I have a Swedish Rolling Block, Norwegian Krag-Jorg (Steyr made) and Springfield trapdoor that are all Pre-1900. Sadly they are all currently in long term storage at until i get stationed back in a place that allows funs.
Only picture I got of one of them on this laptop, the Krag is buried in the middle.
>>34904818
Old Mauser best Mauser.
>>34904419
I know, I love mine, It shoots really good for a gun that is 120 years old.
>>34904818
My oldest is my 1893 Turkish Mauser made in 1894.
German reissued Polish WZ98a
>>34905608

I should have specified the year: 1897

IMA Martini? Got one myself and she even fires! Unfortunately, no picture of it cleaned. I'll get my brother to post a pic.
Does a 96/11 Schmidt Rubin where the receiver was made in 1898 count?
>>34905814
They don't exist, retard. You could try looking for a Martini-Metford or
Martini-Enfield instead.
>>34906076
Shit that's what I meant, Martini-Enfield. Wtf is a Metford?
mfw C&R arrived yesterday, but I still need to get a certificate of eligibility from CA doj
>>34904818
1884 trapdoor
1854 pinfire
>>34906118
>Pinfire
Fuck, I want someone to make a centerfire with those aesthetics.
>>34905629
Judging by the large amount of German replaced parts, and the fact there was no crest stamped on the rifle, my current assumption is that it was captured as a barreled receiver.
>>34906124
You can get them converted, it can take a 44 cal bullet.
>>34904938
I have several things significantly older than that.
>>34906094
It's a British Military Martini action rifle with a barrel on it that is rifled using the Metford technique. That's what the difference is between Martinis Metford, Henry and Enfield. They're just different types of rifling. Martini being the action.
Martini Metfords were developed at the time when .303 was just getting proper development. They hadn't perfected cordite yet so they got the help of Col. Rubin from Switzerland who assisted the stopgap development of a compressed pellet of black powder for use in the .303 cartridge. Most Martini Metfords you can find today have shit bored due to the super hot charges and high pressures being put through them alongside the corrosive nature of BP and the rounded nature of Metford rifling in the first place.
>>34906212
You can also find the Lee-Metford. It's the same idea except most got converted with Enfield barrels.
>>34906212
I found a good looking Khyber Pass copy on armslist for like 200 bucks. It's not safe to shoot, but would it be worth going through the effort of getting someone to rebarrel it for 303 or 308? Even possible?
>>34906235
Rebarreling would be pointless given the dubious metallurgy of the action itself. You should be able to find a British or Nepalese Martini action if you want to build your own sporter for a lot less than $200. Single shot Martini action .22lr target rifles used to be super popular in the British Commonwealth and they're super fun and accurate. You should do one up in .32special or something cute.
>>34906212
Bores are bad because the Metford system was too fragile for use with the hot, erosive cordite loads. It took the Brits close to 40 years to come up with a cordite that was bore friendly and by that time it was easier to just switch to a standard smokeless.
Metford barrels that have only been used with blackpowder or standard nitrocellulose powders tend to be in ecent shape.
Hey everboddy
Ben witch Classic Firearms here
>>34906296
You're only partially correct. The black powder .303 was a hotter cartridge than any cordite military load done. It had a nasty tendency to burn out bores a lot faster than cordite.
>>34906315
No it wasn't. The standard pressure of the .303 did not change between the three different propellants.
>>34904938
My Portuguese Mannlicher is also older.
>>34904818
would post napalese martini henry from 1880's but currently in college and didn't bring it with me.
>>34904938
My Berthier is from 1895.
>>34905397
What should I watch out for if I'm buying a webly revolver
>>34905416
How did you store them, cosmo, airtight container with silica packs?
>>34905982
Yes
>>34906440
But what if the Zulus cross the river and attack your college?
>>34904938
I do. Two actually. Ignore the Saiga and turkroach blaster. Chilean Mauser is dated 1898 and Lebel is 1894.
>>34906076
>>34906094
Christ, I want a Martini-Enfield badly. They cost an eye and a testicle tho.
>>34906691
Sometimes I think it'd just be smarter to buy a No. 1 Mk III but then I look at the sexy sexy martini receiver and remember how much fun single shot is
FUCK I WANT ONE

Remington Mosin that was captured by the Finns. If only I had the money.
>>34906496
Most are milled for 45 acp and moon clips which is way more pressure then the old 455 loading, the latch mechanism or the cylinder will not take it forever. I shoot downloaded lead 45 auto-rim and have never had any issues.
Is anyone else having trouble with 4chan tonight?
>>34904818
Second oldest is my 1900 1896/11 Schmidt-Rubin.
>>34904818
Muh shot out Chilean short Mauser. I slugged the bore, and cast some bullets for it, just need to find some brass now and hope I can press these oversized bullets into the casings. I love to hold this rifle, I want to shoot it.

>>34907951
You have a problem with capitalism?
>>34906510
Slathered them up and put them in couple pelican cases I own with descant packs. The Krag and Rolling block are down at my dads place in Florida. Even still I am kinda worried how they will be when I get them back from storage... just that whole not knowing bit.
Do you all reload for your Martinis? Any tips for a someone who wants to get into to it just to reload 450 Martini?
>>34909632
For starters you'll have to load .577/450 instead. You'll want to invest in a bullet casting setup. Bertram makes the best brass for this cartridge but it's expensive. Dies are available from several manufacturers. You'll need to lube your bullets if firing blackpowder, use a 50/50 beeswax and tallow mixture and over powder card. I'd also recommend using a drop tube for powder, it fills the case more evenly.
It's a fun cartridge to shoot and totally worth doing if you wanna pretend to remove Zulu.
>>34904818

>>34908206
y-yes actually
>>34907951
My problem wasn't finding one. My problem was getting there first. Every time I found one someone else would swooce right in and grab it
>>34904938
I have Carcano from 1894
>>34907951

They are. At most I'd say he has maybe 3 or 4 no4mk1 T snipers but for the most part he has everything stating from lee-martini to metfords and so on
Also Gew 88/05/35

Remington 1861 "old army"
officer model Reichsrevolver
>>34911947
>I'm not even interested in it and I hate you. How'd you pull that off?
Got it at an auction. No one was interested in it because no one knew what it was, and tbf neither did I because I was still newgunz. But, fuck, $50? It could be total garbage and be worth $50. So I bid the only bid and only later learned what a deal I'd gotten.
>>34912869
Nice. I don't local auctions can do guns anymore since I'm in WA and we have "universal" background checks.
>>34912925
>
>Nice. I don't local auctions can do guns anymore since I'm in WA and we have "universal" background checks.
The Auction house wasnt ever really sure what it was and simply had it listed as "Amberg Rifle, 8mm."
Ours still makes us do a 4473 and get checked and all that shit before we can claim them, is that different that your system?
>>34912953
That's all we have to do, but I'm guessing a lot of smaller auctioneers won't want to go to the trouble. I have no idea, I don't have a clue how to find auctions/estate sales in the area.
>>34904818
I would not mind a martini henry. Don't really want to roll the dice with those nepalese """""""ones"""""" though
>>34913060
Don't bother with the Gahendras or Francottes. Get a Martini-Henry MkIV C untouched from IMA - the later ones are in better condition and have a really good chance of firing. Yak grease is easier to clean off than cosmoline.
>>34913107
Was just looking at the reviews on their site they almost all seem really positive. If I get one I'll have to make a thread of me cleaning it all up.
>>34913107

My Steyr M95
I really don't know much about this but I assume it's an original.
I'm wanting to start collecting much older milsurp, should I but a 1853 Enfield or a Martini Henry as my first pre 1900 gun?
Remove philipinos
>>34915600
>>34915578
1853 enfield will be cheaper and easier to get shooting than a martini-henry, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort to reload your own .577/450 cartridges, martini henry is more fun in my opinion. I own both.
>>34915717
Is it sad that the main reason I bought my m44 is to hunt?
So how good is silver bear SP?

It's pretty accurate, and it is a shoulder bruiser out of a M39. So I imagine it'll be quite the sight out of your M44.
>>34916794
I know this is probably supposed to call forth GoT imagery, but all I can think of is Dagoth Ur.

Mosin, or k31 with eclipse in back ground please, if you only do one you should do the k31
Found this at an auction. Seems like a bubba to me. I am aware of the Type 38 short rifle but this in comparison seems too short. It's also marked out of service and has an education mark on the receiver. I assume it's just a bubba I should avoid.

>>34919254
second question remains valid. looking for an unmolested stock? or keeping it that way for sentimental reasons?
What is it about older Mausers that makes the bolts so smooth to operate? My Chilean and my Gew 88/05/35 (I haven't shot it yet) both operate like there is virtually no friction at all.
>>34919996
maybe the springs have loosened over time and any rough surfaces on the bolt have worn themselves smooth.
>>34919996
Cock on close.
Aim surplus wanted $15 to ship an SMLE magazine they were selling for $30 lol.
BRPguns had the same magazines for $28 with $8 shipping so I finally am getting a magazine for this after 4 fucking years.
>>34919333
The latter. Maybe if I liked the Garand more I'd be more interested in restoring it. But as it stands I would rather just keep it as is. It's not like Garand stocks are hard to find.
>>34919996
Well the 88/05/35 isn't really a Mauser. It's a Mannlicher.
>>34920523
That true, but I was mainly trying to say that both my oldest guns are super smooth to operate.
But I NEED a real mannlicher, like a Carcano or a M95.
>>34920709
Well that's the thing, Mannlichers are very smooth rifles.
Also a Carcano isn't really a Mannlicher. It just uses the magazine system.
>>34920709
The Carcano isn't a Mannlicher. It uses the same magazine system but so does a few non-mannlicher designs. The Carcano doesn't share much with other European designs despite some people insisting it's a copy of the Gew.88. It's pretty unique in reality.
>there's 1 lebel on gunbroker right now

And it was absolutely worth it. Bore is pristine, but the butt stock tends to wobble a bit every now and then.
>>34925682
Dunno everything but he's going to be putting a Dutch 1895 long rifle up in a few days. I got my Portuguese Mannlicher from him as well and he had a beautiful 1912 Norwegian Krag a couple weeks ago.
>>34906288
On that note, there's a Sportco (Australian manufacturer) Martini in .22LR for sale near me, but there's also a ".303 Martini Artillery Carbine".It would be pretty bitchin' to have a short barreled Martini in 303 but I'm a bit dubious of it's authenticity. Has anyone heard of such a thing? I'm fairly inclined to just go for the Sportco, a .22LR martini would be fun as long as it's accurate.
Is $65 a decent price for a MAS 36 bayonet?

Only picture I've got to share is my Kraig Jorgensen, manufactured 1899. My dad has a Brown Bess and a Martini Henry. Somewhere is the family is a Spanish Mauser my great grandfather brought back from Cuba.
Jesus FUCKING Christ. I was cleaning my Type 99 after a day of shooting noncorrosive Hornady loads when I noticed two crack looking notches on the left side of the receiver. Felt my heart smash right through the floor as it's an all matching and complete rifle with AA, monopod, and dust cover. "Strongest action of WW2 my ass", I thought. Then after some careful searching I found that these notches are absolutely commonplace on Arisakas. Pic related.
I can just imagine the fucking designer of this rifle chuckling to himself as he imagined some dumb American fudd panicking thinking he turned his prized shooter into a wall hanger after discovering the notches, thinking his receiver was cracked. You got me good, Mr. Arisaka you slippery slant eyed gook. You fucking got me good.
unfortunately not 117+, only 112 years old
>>34927695
You've never seen indexing marks before? Fairly common on rifles.
>>34927722
Nope, what are they for?
>>34927729
Showing you when things are lined up properly.
Technically not pre 1900 since it was made in 1900, if that counts then my German made m96 is 117 years old.
2nd oldest is my 1897 from 1904.
>>34927712
>club toes
>flat feet
>scabbed knuckles
>pale compared to rest of your leg
How does heart disease feel?
>>34927749
Ah, guess that makes sense. Just haven't seen em on my other guns.
Yea
Part 2
Part 3
>>34927917
Wh-what?
>>34927950
noice!! I repaired one of those once for a client.
>>34927695
Most countries used marks to line things up friendo. My hand nugget has one for every position the ejector rod can swing to, as well as one to line up frame and barrel. It's also tied for my oldest gun at 105 years old
eclipse bump
>>34930189
I'm gonna use my surp's bore as a pinhole viewer
>>34928323
Not pre 1900, but hand-Nuggets are awesome.
>>34930296
What year is yours?
>>34930358
Not that anon, but here's my 1925. I absolutely love it.
>guy wants $900 for his chink mauser
>Mfw "firm"
>>34930710
What kind of Chink Mauser tho?
>anon posts snek
>expects sympathy
>>34930752
I was unaware there was more than one type. It's just a generic mauser dirty and beat to shit with a bow and arrow crest
>>34931032
>I was unaware there was more than one type.
Oh fuck no pham; the Chinese copied half a dozen Mauser models; the Mauser Werke M1907, the FN M1924 (Type-21), the Mauser Werke Standardmodell (Type-24), and then there's the oddballs like the Mukden T13 Mauser/Arisaka hybrid and various small-scale local copies of everything from Gew.98 to Vz.24.
Bow-and Arrow crest would be
>>34931191
>Bow-and Arrow crest would be
Would be 21st Arsenal in Nanjing OR the 1st Arsenal in Hanyang.
>>34930358
It's a 1943 Izhevsk, just like my Mosin.
>>34930296
my LGS had an 1898 hand nugget 2 years ago. someone bought it for $800.
I remember when you could buy them with C&R for $75
>>34931462
Smokless antique handguns attract a certain kind of crowd
>>34931462
Not that unusual, especially if it isn't import marked.
>>34933182
For a pre-1900? its the only one I've seen that was that old.
>>34934304
I saw a 1914 one go for that much, just because it wasn't import marked. Pre-WW1 guns can go for a good bit.
>>34921214
so that's where all the CMP garands went...
>>34905982
Yes. All they care about is the year the receiver is manufactured. That's an antique.
Evening
>>34935030
nice gun you got there
>>34935046
You too, what's yours marked?
>>34914763
It would be unprofessional to remove zulus without it
>>34935054
1943?
>>34935076
Oh no I meant stock disc
>>34935104
this I guess. Dont know what it is
>haven't gone shooting with my surps in months
>just hoarding the fucking things and all the ammo
>mfw 12 guns this year alone
It's like I am slowly becoming one of those psychotic hoarders you see on TV just instead of trash I have bullet casings everywhere and guns in gun bags.
>>34934511
is that another new one?
Im picking up a WW1 US Army uniform on Friday.
>>34935773
Oh no, I bought that last year. Not usually a fan of Turkish stuff but it's a Mannlicher so I couldn't resist.
>>34935837
wew
that thing is beat to death
>>34927902
I thought that was a scope on the Swede mauser at first lol
I know everyone here always loves Zulu but I'm kinda surprised Breaker Morant (1980) isn't posted as often. Great damn movie

>>34935884

>>34936804

Also got this a few months ago for $400.
Sent my monies to RIA today. Wonder how long it'll take to get everything processed.
>>34938247
