>Are VEPRs cool?
Very, but personally, I think I'd rather have an arsenal sgl rifle for an intermediate caliber. I think veprs are a bit heavier than necessary for those calibers and I prefer the ak-74 features like the front sight base/brake combo.
You'll be very happy with your vepr though based on my experiences with the 308 equivalent. You couldn't ask for a more solid feeling and well finished gun. But it'll weigh a pound or more than it has to. I'm a stickler on weight though, more-so than most people here.

I don't think there's anything really stopping molot from importing more.
I'm sure demand is there to send a healthy batch of all three rpk calibers into the states, IDK why nobody does. I doubt they cost hardly any more/less to produce than these vepr-fm folder rifles or sporters.
And 556 really is a nice caliber to have it in with all the ammo options. It's a lot of fun to launch some reasonably priced tracers out into open farm fields at dusk.
The only problem with 556 is that it wrecks my steel plates instantly within 100 yards at least, while steel cored 54r has pic related happen with borderline zero damage to my plates.

>>33908240
It's kindof the other way around. Sporter mags need to be modified to fit in a normal ak with a bullet guide. If you don't grind the mag where I've circled, then it won't go into the gun. That part will push up on the bullet guide and stop you from locking in.
I've modded 2 556 and 2 545 10rd mags to go into my guns.
>>33908247
So pretty much this, they'll "fit" but won't feed if you don't have a bullet guide.
>>
>>33908277
FORTUNE COOKIE BLESSING, CHIMPS! FORTINE COOKIE NO BULLY!

I just like matte better, especially when all of the plum on the rifle is matte. Shiny plum with a triangle is nice but it clashes with the matte stock for me. Although the shiny came on the kit and is still correct a matte would be more correct for a rifle from 1988, plus it matches better (unless I'm just a retard and have been wrong about plum pistol grip production periods for like two years)

Gotta do some homework on the trigger guard too, I've read that some of these kits came in with the incorrect trigger guard for the year

Just out of curiosity...
How much weight savings can you get by changing furniture from wood to polymer on a standard ak?

>1/3 a pound if you're lucky
That's not insignificant to me, I like to pull off any extra weight I can for normal shooting. I can certainly keep my lighter guns stable for longer than my heavier ones. And that could make up for up to around 8-10rds in a mag.
Just some basic measurements I did on mag weights alone.
----45rd--30rd---10rd
545-------1.1----.4
556-1.5--1.1----.4
762-------1.5----.7
308---------------1
54r---------------1
>>
>>33908335
A small number of the kits got the trigger guards mixed up with Rguns' AKSU kits. If you post a front view of the mag release I can tell you which it is. Or a closeup from any angle really, they're pretty distinctively different.

As for the correct pistol grip, I know the popular knowledge dictates that the 88 kits should have matte pistol grips. But if that were the case, why did the 88 kits come with shiny pistol grips? These kits are unissued, untouched. They wouldn't replace all the pistol grips just because. IMO the dates are wrong. Tantal and the other buffs have been wrong before. I seem to remember them actually being confused by the pistol grips because it stood in conflict of the popular knowledge at the time.

>>33909193
>>33909179
Triangle is 7.7oz, poly is 11.7
>>
>>33909257
With the triangle being made of steel, I always assumed it'd be heavier than polymer at least.
Interesting.
>>
>>33909257
>But if that were the case, why did the 88 kits come with shiny pistol grips? These kits are unissued, untouched. They wouldn't replace all the pistol grips just because.
Did they all have shiny grips or just his? Maybe True Black Anon's is abnormal for having a shiny grip? Would it be considered incorrect if he did swap grips? I mean it's just a grip and you can go back and forth no problem, it's not like he's doing anything permanent.
>>
>>33907600

When you pick them up you can easily feel the difference. I need to weigh wood as well, and the trunnions to compare weight there, because the folding stock trunnion has more steel to it.

>>33909284
I can't remember if any came with matte grips but it seems the majority came with the shiny ones. Personally I also think the shiny looks better. I don't wanna make any claims though because I'm not sure on this topic.

>>
>>33909257
Could they have just had a big stockpile of shiny grips they had made before switching to matte and just grabbed one at random when building the rifle? It's not like as soon as they switched to matte all of the shiny grips they had made disappeared. If the dates are wrong and shiny is correct for 1988, where does matte fit in? That leaves only a two to three year window from 1988 to 1990-91 when we know they switched to black for matte to have become standard

It's not like I'm gonna get rid of the grip, I can swap between them whenever. It's a really nice looking NOS shiny grip, I'm definitely gonna keep it because it's really pretty looking. In person it looks like it's made of hard candy or something

1988 was the transition year for gloss to matte grips, if memory serves. Gloss plum was made from 1985 to 1988, so it's very plausible that it was just old stock they threw in with that rifle. You could probably get away with either.
>>
>>33909439
They could have. But with hundreds of these 1988 kits sold, it goes beyond just coincidence.

Here's an idea on what could have happened. The plum material used in both the shiny and matte pistol grips is the same, I think. The difference is in the texture of the walls of the mold used to make them. When a new mold gets made, the old ones don't just get thrown out. This became evident to me when I started collecting 74M stocks and studying the differences. So perhaps matte plum grips were being used in 1988, but shiny ones were also still being made.

You know I'm just joshing babe

See i always thought the year was 1986 when they transitioned. Any of the grips could be considered correct for the rifle, Ive read a few stories of Soviet conscripts in the Soviet Afghan War worried that polymer and Bakelite grips were fragile and could break and shrapnel into their bodies from an explosion and that if that happened they couldn't get detected from an X-ray, so they'd search out wood pistol grips to put on their guns to ease their minds about that. Kinda silly but I've read more than one account about that

>>33909514
This right here is one of the biggest reasons why I like AKs from a historical perspective, things are always being learned or proved wrong or corrected with these guns. There's always something new to learn about something as insignificant as furniture color, and there are always thing being discovered that disprove or at the very least contest things that are believed to be fact. Nearly everything is conjecture and there is always new stuff coming popping up that twists things up

Do you happen to know the general ratio of AK74s vs AKS74s that were produced at this period?

What are the odds that someone would modify a historic artifact like that to give it artificial value? I am thinking either I got really lucky and got a handguard that was used in the war by a young conscript who added a personal sticker, which would be really fricking cool, or, the person packaging it added it to make it seem unique. Stickers were an extremely common decoration in that time and place.
Gave their rifle a bit of personal touch.
They came in packs of gum, so I've heard.

So when opening a pack of gum, the soldiers would often just throw it on their rifle.

is gook wife legit a gook wife because i remember a thread where the guy that posted the bathtub pic was say he did landscaping and his wife did nails so she could be a gook by coincidence
>>
>>33906108
Thanks for posting pics of this kit last thread, I've been wanting one and it was nice seeing a few pics of parts from it.

I'm wanting a kit not to build but specifically to sit on and gain value over the years. Are these 88 kits worth it for that reason? They're easily available now so they don't seem valuable in that way right now. I'm not sure if I should buy one or find another year instead.
>>
>>33909887
>nearly everything is conjecture
Exactly, it's not like Izhmash had a press conference every time they changed every little thing. This is all observational. The experts have been wrong many times.

I really don't know what the ratio is. It seems that fixed stock rifles outnumber folders by a significant margin. But if you check out pictures from Ukraine, which are mostly Soviet produced 74s, there are significant numbers of folders out there.

She's a legit gook. He said she has family in Vietnam and that they plan to buy a house there in a previous thread.

>>33911175
Any Russian kit will gain value at this point. I bought my 1983 kit in May 2014 for $665. There's currently a similar 83 kit on Gunbroker with an added sling and US made barrel being sold for $1,295. The only reason the '88s haven't had similar price jumps is because Rguns still has some, whereas they ran out of '83s a while back.
>>
>>33910074
not even worth your time cleaning, it's not impeding function in any way. it's just loose tolerances trapping carbon, you can clean it bare then it will be back to where it was 50 rounds later

but yeah just slather in solvent, give it a minute or 10, then chisel it off without touching the barrel lips

Like >>33911243 said, I'm sure they'll go up once RGuns runs out. I honestly don't care about the value of this kit though, 1988 rifles are my favorite AK74s and that thats why I bought it. It could have been the rarest kit or the most common kit and that wouldn't have made much difference to me, I just like this era of AK74 and got what I wanted

>>33911187
>But if you check out pictures from Ukraine, which are mostly Soviet produced 74s, there are significant numbers of folders out there
That's what got me thinking about it. I always assumed fixed stocks were by far more common but there have been a lot of folders in Ukraine that got me more interested in finding out

>>33911366
From a personal preference standpoint between those two yeah I like the late flat purple matte ones more than shiny speckled ones. My favorite plums are the very dark purple matte Izhmash plums. From a value standpoint then yeah I'd take the shiny flecked Tula but I'd rather have what I like than what is considered more valuable

I have a question for /akg/... If you could legally register and convert one of your AK's to full fun/select fire, which would you? It'd be treated like and pre-86 transferable MG but you wouldn't be able to just up and sell it. It has to be an AK that you currently own or have at least paid for.

Sup /akg/?
Im built a few ARs and now Im looking to turn my hand to AKs.
I have access to the tools of my workplace (A machine shop) and would like to build as much of the rifle as I can. I know most guys just build receivers but I would like to challenge myself and see if I could build as much of the rifle as I can myself.
So, Im trying to find as much technical data on the stamped AKM. So if any of you guys could advise me on where to fine relevant data, books, websites, pdfs etc. It would be greatly appreciated. Also feel free to ask me any questions.
>>
>>33913645
Huh, might not be bad. I'm kind of scared of cheaper red dots since when I first got into shooting with red dots, they would lose zero easily and piss me off. That's what turned me off to electronic sights for the longest time.

I was actually thinking of going with trijcon red dot. I'm not sure what the cut off price point is for red dots when they stop becoming shit.

How high would I want the red dot and how far forward or back would I want to mount it on the vepr?

Oh cool, your machine shop has a rivet jig that has literally zero other uses except to specifically build AKs? Talk about a jack of all trades machine shop.

Comparing """Building""" ARs to building AKs is like comparing Lego Duplos to genuine manufacturing.

Before plum furniture was adopted, the AKS-74s used slightly different colored polyamide grips with wood handguards

Always wanted one of these pistol grips. This rifle is a kit build from a 1982 AKS-74 that has floated around between owners for several years. It is so sexy. There used to be a video on YT of it being shot but it has been removed and the guy's channel is nothing but commercial planes now.

I didn't realize that those grips were different from a normal old dark Bakelite grip. I really do like the look of wood and Bakelite but I've never gotten around to picking any up for my SLR

Do you know how to identify the general time period black Russian furniture was produced? You've mentioned something about that. I'm curious about what time period my HGs and PG were made

Speaking of Russian black polymer, I've got two handguard sets and has a heat shield and one doesn't. Is there a reason for that?

Reminds me of my own cat, even has that same little black spot above the mouth. My father wanted to name him hitler, because the famous 'stash, but my mother was like "we are not naming this cat hitler", so we all settled on Adolf.
He was a big cat, but not really fat. While I'm not saying he was the most /fit/ cat in the world, I'm pretty sure he was fairly buff, as far as cats go.

You dont need a rivet jig to build an AK, I welded my first one together.

But seriously. You could have given some actual advice to the guy. Sure he will need to buy a few tools but if hes committing to wanting to build an AK he could become an AK guy rather then an AR fag.
