chest rig isn't necessarily a requirement. i don't know that much about mag carrying options, I just knew I didn't want them all on a belt. and 8 mags isn't a must have number. 6 would most likely be plenty. i did want more than 4, so i threw 8 out there.

I own the DAKM 4150N, same gun, cept the barrel (US, nitrided). Great rifles, smoothest action I've ever felt on an AK( I've never handle a milled AK though fyi), but my model was only $1200. Although a CHF CL original barrel is a nice touch, for those who are purists, I don't know if it's worth a $400 difference. Def. Arms makes amazing and accurate AKs, check out the AKOU review of my model, but it's up to you if want to drop the money on one. Hope my rambling helped a bit.

I'm thinking about buying a VEPR with a 20 inch barrel in either 5.45 or x54r with the idea to create a DMR-style rifle, not an SVD knockoff per se, but a rifle with RPK furniture or something with a PSO-1 scope.

Arsenal using the 'wrong' gas block and front sight block has no affect whatsoever on function or reliability. It is only a problem for people that want a historically accurate gun, or one as close as possible. It's not the sort of thing that the average gun owner would ever notice.

I've only sold one gun. As much as I didn't care for it I still regret it. And besides, the WASR was my first rifle. But I haven't shot 5.45 but I do agree that 7.62 is a fun as fuck cartridge.

No, it's a legit rpk-201 built in russia by molot.
A vepr sporter modded to look like an rpk is pretty different if you pay any attention to detail. You'd be missing the folder stock, and the cleaning rod guide in the middle of the barrel etc. And you'd have an oddball thing on the gas block(or near it, can't remember) to hook the sporter stock to. And you'd probably have a slant cut receiver too.

It's just an easier distance where you can see the holes you are making instead of walking back and forth. And the arc of the bullet at that distance will match at 100m.
Once you're confident it's sighted, take it to 100 and do any finer tuning.

I recently picked up a WASR the other day for a pretty good price. I wanted to made a few adjustments and wondered what the general consensus was. I've done a few saiga 5.45 conversions in the past but that was years ago and I havn't had any AK's since.

I plan on:
-Polishing the rails and the grooves in the bolt to smooth the action
-Drilling out a hole in the buttstock for the cleaning kit and adding the trapdoor plate
-Strip down the wood and refinish it a dark red color
-POSSIBLY polish the bolt carrier

Will any of this fuck the rifle terribly or kill any change of reselling it later if i choose to?

Im doing a couple other minor things like adding a bakalite grip, replacing the slant brake with the tapco slot brake, and swapping out the G2 trigger with the AKT-ult.

Any other suggestions for improvements to the rifle itself?

I've got Chinese and Bulgarian 5.56 rifles both. Both can be used with Beryl mags. In fact, Beryl mags are superior to the Bulgarian mags and cheaper, though a little harder to find. XXXfenceXXX sells them for $35/ea from Poland direct on akfiles, I get my Beryl mags from him. The 106 is my favorite out of all my AKs.
