Hello. I'm seriously considering changing my major (if that's what you call it, i'm doing a bachelor) from history (which I have one finished semester from, I failed this one due to a series of unfortunate events) to Japanese.

I want to study abroad. I am a weeb. If I go to Japan that means I can delve deeper into my hobbies (I could go to Akiba and finally go party at Mogra for anison matrix) while kinda getting an education.

I am a gentooman, I could easily get a couple of certs while also getting a education, and then people see that I followed through on the whole college meme.

How fucked up is this plan? I'm not exactly in a hurry because supposedly I was conscripted and I have to do a year of military service starting in August...

Either way, if I were to start studying it, a bachelor at the university of Oslo starts with a year of studies about Japan and learning the language, and then a year of studying abroad (I think they got a deal with Tokyo university or something, but I'm not sure), so I wouldn't just hop on a plane to go there for anything but a vacation anytime soon. There is a difference between wanting to indulge in hobbies, and thinking that Japan is my hobby. Here in Oslo there are two stores where you can buy manga. In Tokyo I guess you can kind of buy it anywhere? And there's an entire area where you can just geek out, which is cool af. Are you saying I can better have fun here than in Japan?

That I know. I'm expecting a very formal society. Here in Norway we never really use any honorifics, not even "Dr" or "sir", I literally talk to my professors starting conversations with "hey you" and it's totally normal.

Well I was watching some jvloggers in the past. I've seen a bunch of thejapanchannel.coms videos, which were very interesting and a nice switch from the whole "WOW JAPAN MAGIC LAND OF WONDERS" thing you find with a lot of other youtubes (which I still watch some of, because they're fun).

I do not expect to find a job with just "lol I speak Japanese", I'm going to do some IT work too, and if I make it through and like the army, that's also a possible career choice for me. I consider all doors open, but for now, the one that's really tempting, is the one that lets me live abroad in a very different culture, so that I can better understand myself by seeing what others do differently.
