We were usually in top 3 from around 30-something classes and there were multiple people with D's in multiple subjects.

Maybe it won't be available to public, but in South Africa (not the state), they sure are developing prosthetic limbs for the military.

Well, I say military, in late 90's private company bought all of their research.
What they were trying to do, was that they would replace bones and muscles with synthetic materials that would boost the abilities of the user (getting bit sci-fi now), and then connect it to the nervous system, but it sidetracked and they started positively making prototypes of prosthetic limbs.

Problem was that nonetheless how good the technology was, they weren't able to connect the limbs in order for the user to feel again.
That is of course the biggest problem - loosing the cervical nerves in the part of that body.
In 2006 or something, they started experimenting with amniotic fluid, which actually brought some results - which was that some subjects were able to regrow fully functional cervical nerves, which seemed impossible until then.
While they were growing, they were able to attach synthetic material to the nerves, which resulted in user being able to feel his leg again.
That would all be great, but the user died of complications with his brain, due to his brain failing to use the new "tools" correctly.
Happened to few people that they tested, but some were actually able to fully function with those new augmentations.

Last thing that I heard was they almost tweaked all the details, and that they should go official in 10-15 years.

That was 2 years ago. All that's left now is rumors that they were successful and that in few years they will be able to start mass production for public.
No doubt it would be expensive as hell, still.

The man who told me that is now dead, but I can guarantee that he was speaking the truth, since I've seen pictures of the place.
Besides body augmentations, they play around with a lot of other technology, that was mind blowing for me.

you have to choose between a foreign language or Math, you can take both but there's pretty much no reason to

some schools only have you take the state-wide exam for math - which is really easy, because it's made in a way that no matter what school you're from, you have to be able to pass.

in some schools math can also have an oral part, where you choose a topic and talk about it.

There's no entry test to BSc / BA uni courses, your matura functions as your entry test instead. All written exams are state-wide, but I'm not sure about the oral part. You can take a basic or an advanced exam from each subject. Picking at least one advanced exam is pretty much a must if you want free uni.
Some other factors like language exams and sports medals also factor into your university entry score. At some point the gommies wanted to give you free points for being a Gypsy or being preggers, but they had to back out.

I think it's a recurring complaint here that some years the advanced exam is piss easy, and it's bitching hard in others.

The math test sheet got leaked the year I did my matura, and people who applied for science majors had to re-write it. I'm a humanities fag so I could've kept my mark, but I re-wrote it anyway because I'm a gud boi like that.

Yeah, point requirements depend on the university, faculty and field, and the calculations are different for each too. When I'm bored at uni, I sometimes just take a piece of paper and start writing some lyrics for practice and sometimes people react like knowing moonrunes makes you a god or something and sometimes they tell me they "tried" learning Japanese and gave up before finishing kana. As for the nuisance, the kanji already hardwired into my head are useful, the ones you see maybe once a month are really bad for remembering. I did that in hs, my biology notebooks had more Japanese in them than biology. I also cheated on a test once by changing hungarian words into kana and writing my hand full of the stuff, felt like a genius.
My problem is, I forgot too much already. Even the kanji I can reliable recognize, I can't write most of them by myself, and I'm too lazy too keep up with practice.

Haven't really read anything other than manga and textbooks/printouts for uni, I did buy a volume of a light novel but haven't tried reading it since. Even if I could do it, I'd just read so much slower compared to English that it doesn't feel worth it most of the time.

Writing is the same for me, the lyric writing did a pretty good job being writing practice but since I stopped it's gotten pretty bad for me, too.
I sometimes used Kanji to shorten stuff and later reading it I had no idea what I shortened.
