Dad lives in Odessa, wouldn't recommend moving there at all. The city square is nice but the majority of everything else is a total undeveloped shithole with drug addicts, hookers, and drunks walking around everywhere. Also now with the war the inflation is some of the highest in the world and family that recently visited say you have to be rich just to buy decent food now. Not sure why you would want to move there right now of all times.

From my experience in Ukraine:
It depends on people greatly. I've met the nicest people there but also the biggest cunts that will fuck you without lube. When I was there (like 5 years ago) it was a big no-no to approach police even if you had a problem - they'd realize you're a foreigner and you won't get rid of them unless you'll pay them. Also some people didn't like me cause I'm a Pole but that's other story.

All of this was in Western Ukraine, I'd expect Eastern Ukraine (which Odessa is, if not geographically then mentally) to be worse.

Lviv is pretty good. I'm from Kiev, never been to Lviv, but all my friends who've lived in both say Lviv is better.

Lviv is much better than Odessa. Odessa is a working class shit town. Lviv is referred to as the unofficial Capitol of west Ukraine. There's no war or fighting in the west and is rather safe when thinking war wise. I'm going. Family lives outside Lviv.

Odessa and Lviv are not good places to study Russian. Lviv is Ukrainian-speaking and Odessa is expensive in relative terms. Go to Kharkiv in the East if you really want to study Russian in Ukraine.

For you I would recommend Lviv because it's a beautiful city and you'll be closer to Western Europe which means you can just take the bus and easily do weekend trips. Lviv also has somewhat of an international community.

If you want to study russian then visit Odessa. Lviv is mainly ukrainian speaking city. Lviv dwellers is generally more cultured, but Odessa arguably has more character. Odessa is definitely more multicultural in a good sense. Weather is better in Odessa. Odessa has some nice architecture but Lviv looks is more refined for my taste. People are friendly in general, but Odessa is much much more banterous and criminal. You will like it as a brit.

Odessa is probably comfy. A legendary place indeed. But Ukraine is at war, it's better to keep out of this country yet.
