You can still be good trading partners but have strong borders. Decent border controls helps with criminal and illegal issues between countries. Lots of problem people get caught in between the Canadian and USA border. It can mean longer wait times and more paperwork but it can be worth it to keep shitty people out. The thing is, the border between Finland and Sweden is in the far north where few people live. The two villages on either side of the border have practically fused together over time, and it barely even resembles a border nowadays. There was no problem until this refugee thing blew up. We have a few towns between Canada/ the USA that sort of fused together. I'm not really sure how they manage that or the empty forests in between. I don't think the type of people who want to sneak in for free stuff want to spend a week wandering through the woods in the cold though. Most seem to stick to smuggling themselves in via vehicles which can be inspected at check points. For commercial vehicles they can force them to go through check points.
