Life drawing is an indispensable tool in your art career. Do not be intimidated based on your skill level - there will always be someone worse than you and someone better than you. Use this opportunity to meet new artists for learning, critique, and growth.
I'm not exactly a total beginner but there's this problem that I didn't examine and now noticed I'm taking way too long to get over.
But it has to do with drawing forms as linework and creating depth. I can't do it. I'm not sure what it is but my drawings just don't feel... "set." Pic related is mine. It's not my best but the problem isn't any different. I look at this and get frustrated because I've drawn this same drawing many many many times. It's just a loose sketch with no oomph.
The answer is probably "just practice." I understand, anyhow. I just really wanted to vent.
>no practice poses on the new /beg/
Welp, there goes my motivation ;_;

Light and shadow is what made form POPS!

Took one-and-a-half days to make.
Thoughts on what needs improvement?
>>3085810
It's well drawn, but I think the eye gets tired of looking at it because it doesn't know where to settle. I think the mishmash of lines direct the eye in circles.
Try putting more contrast/detail on the features you want to stand out, or do the opposite with less detail/contrast on the features that aren't important. The light and dark areas could maybe stand to be better defined too. Be more careful with using lines for form vs. using lines for tone, it muddles the drawing if it's unclear.
Are there any other forums that have people posting their art and getting critiques like this thread?
>>3085825

god damn i am terrible at this even after four years of painting. other than the massively fucktarded values when i tried added a secondary light which turns my crappy craft to a fucking shiny shit sandwich there are probably still are a million other problems that my fucked eyes doesnt even notice the outright retarded and glaring problems this seems to have.
other than outright give up, what can i do about it to turn my turd into a not so piece of shite work that somehow wont look like that i fucking pulled out my feces directly from inside my ass and splashed it onto some paper?

I think you guys have the same idea, and I'm very grateful. I don't know why I never considered the viewer's eye until now. I know every single artist worth their salt did, but for some reason my brain never thought of applying it to my own process. Wtf.
I guess this whole time I was giving each part of the ref "equal treatment." I wanted to achieve a line-unity. Maybe I still can working with pops?
Thanks for the vid btw
>>3085894
You need to do some form studies. It doesn't look like you understand lighting and form if you're having this much trouble with it.

First, don't get yourself down by thinking like that. It's not bad, you can just do better. Don't spend forever polishing something if you hate it so much, just start over; most importantly try something different next time, don't keep repeating the same mistakes.
Always know if you're drawing to make something look good, or drawing to learn something new. You can't do both, you have to fail something to learn in art. It's okay to fail as long as you try again.
Frankly I don't think this is so bad. The other anon is right; I think you could do with better understanding form first, but I wouldn't get bent out of shape about that attempt. If you really want to fix that, then I think you should pay more attention to where your light sources are. Plan it out in your head, there can't just be "a new light source"; it has to be a specific kind of light from a specific source, shining on the subject at a specific angle. Right now this would only make sense if the light were behind the subject, because none of the light is hitting the plane of the forehead, nor reaching into the eyesocket.
>>3085926
thanks anon2 for clarification
im watching foundations of form videos online and possibly light and shadow foundations from the start to clean up misinformative habits created over the years
its great for cleaning the shit out of my eyes from my own paintings :^)
>>3085902
I think you should lower the opacity of that layer, make a new one, and draw over that as confidently as possible. No chicken scratching, if something doesn't look right then let it not look right until you have the whole drawing in front of you. Right now, you've buried your mistakes under a pile of lines so you can't see them, that's poor digital art habit. We can't critique it until you expose your mistakes neatly. You can't fix your mistakes because you aren't sure what's a mistake and what isn't, so you NEED to draw cleanly over that and expose your mistakes.
After you do, sketch your fixes off to the side of the main drawing, and do it NEATLY. You shouldn't try to fix things by drawing over them again and again, especially in digital art. When you think you've fixed it, then you can draw over the mistake in a new layer. Or you can even copy it, paste it in a new layer, drag it over, and erase the layer under it.

Someone told me that using the stabilizer in SAI was a terrible idea, but never exactly explained why.
So all this time I've been trying do draw using only 7, and it's very hard to draw straight lines.
I tried the stabilizer again today (S-4) and I can see an obvious improvement in my line, not to mention my hand doesn't hurt after drawing for more than 10 minutes.
TL:DR- SAI stabilizer, yes or no

>I'll try to provide crits on the references I post
>>3086095
If i had to pick the picture apart i would say her left foot should be more angled away from me and A: her hair line is to high up, or B: her face doesn't look like im looking down at it from a higher angel. Breasts start below the armpit not above it but then again im not sure if those lines are supposed to convey breasts so disregard that if im wrong. Other then that its a pretty chill drawing

Messed up on the left door, it's hard making guitars cause all the geometrical shapes have to be perfect like those circles in the middle and strings etc. enjoy guitars.l but I still don't have a steady hand

Try to map the angle of the light on the sphere and the cylinder, not the angle of the cylinder itself.
I do gesture drawing daily and I've read Vilppu's drawing manual, and I don't know what else to do.
So the next step is to imagine poses and build them with cylinders and spheres and shit? Like this guy?
>>3086053
>>3086160
Just draw, then apply what you learned to make that drawing better.
>>3086137
Ya i think it might have something to do with the fact I struggle to fit everything in a composition when i'm on small paper. That and i probably still don't understand perspective all that well.
Thanks for the input.
>>3086168
When I want to do a piece thats outside of my range I usually doodle up the things I want in it separately to get a feel for it. Maybe you should just draw the guitar a few times to get a better understanding of it

literally everything ever drawn is 2D

>literally everything ever drawn is 2D

theres a difference between drawing a circle and drawing a sphere. are you really this fucking stupid?
>>3086081
Now draw from reference, with the reference turned upside down. It reveals where those forms are in organic figures. This is what the construction phase of drawing is all about.
Do that enough and you can start to apply it to drawing from imagination.
>>3086227
You still haven't made a point then. Or you are too retarded to see the 3d shapes being used.
Anyone want to try their hand with this? lol

I think i give pretty good critique but there is a limit how far that will take you. Telling someone what is immediately wrong with a problem doesn't diagnose the root cause of an issue. Unless they specifically ask for that i never give that kind of advice.
Disregard shitty lineart for now.
whats wrong with the big picture?
I think I'm almost done and only needs a few tweaks before I clean it and do the rendering

ok so i have been watching some foundations of values for the past hours and need some help with this issue, so when light is directly above (90 degrees) a cylinder, with no reflected light would the object look like 1, 2 or 3?would the darkest part of the terminator would be the one closest to the viewer (2) or because the edge closest the viewer be the lightest because it is the closest (1) or would the cylender be a constant value all around? (3)

It depends on what your goal is, really. Perspective is probably the most agreed upon, but it can be very, very frustrating at first.
I wanted to draw pin ups, so I started learning gesture and anatomy first. Eventually I had to start learning perspective too, because you can't go very far drawing the figure without understanding form.
Start with what you need to learn to draw what you want, and supplement it with perspective study.
alright im settling with this sketch. how is it? hopefully its obvious what im trying to foreshorten
actually i might put a couple rogers in too for fun
>>3086305

but if you are a braindead person like me, who has the attention span of an autist i also suggest watching and following along with proko's video courses, it doesnt go in as depth but its still pretty good.
>>3086293
if the light is parallel to the height of your cylinder, it will look like the picture 3 and the ambient oclussion it will be like a dark outline in the bottom of the cylinder.
If you are having a lot of problems with the basics forms, grab an object with the shape you are struggling and light it in the position that you want.
>>3086325
yeah you are right, thanks anon. just as soon as you posted this i found some evidence pointing towards what you said. if these poles were not reflective, they would probably be more closely related to picture 3 with that tiny little AO at the bototm.
>>3086295
I don't know how they call it in english, academic drawing? , but the first skill you should practice it's drawing from observation, in other words it's copying your subject in to the paper, start with simple objects and later with people.
At the same time you should be reading a perspective's book and try some excercises, people find it very boring but it's one of the fundamentals that will teach you drawing from imagination.

I'm not that experienced myself, but looking at your lines, I feel you are trying to lay the lines down too slowly on the majority of your attempts. Maybe your are trying to be careful, but the speed will help smooth it out even if you lose accuracy in certain respects.
Since you're using a pencil, also try using the side of the pencil more with an overhand grip. That might be more comfortable for drawing ellipses.

>>What does it feel like when we move left to right, as oppposed to right to left?
>>Is there specific emotion from various directions?
>>More than a rudimentary view of upshots/downshots?
>>What happens/what are the rules of lines colliding?
>>Do specific shapes ellicit certain feelings?
If you read this, and have some answers or maybe videos to ponder on, any and everything is appreciated.

have you tried incrementing the selection? I think that's what it's called; basically just growing it so you won't have as many spots.

I really like the way you splattered that on the canvas. It's one of the better splats.
Drawing from the elbow shoulder with the tablet and I feel like I have very little control. It's slippery as hell. Is it just a matter of getting used to it or is there some secret tablet technique that I'm not aware of?

Shit, that's pretty good man. What are you studying at the moment?
So this was my second attempt at colouring this. By all accounts my second big use of Copic Markers.
I've got a shit ton to learn, and this was a way for me to break away from just pencil drawings. Practice with inking and applying greyscale. I'll need to articulate proper values going forward more an more.
Feels great to break away from pencils a little.

Best tutorials for acrylic painting?
Every acrylic painting I see is super brightly colored, is that all it's good for? How the heck would I be able to mix skin tone colors as a beginner?

ok, I was under the impression that doing lineless are would be better for painting but I'm stuck here, what am I supposed to do after this? I'm fine painting w/ lines
or should I just start off again with something that has a reference and not attempt from memory for a beginner?

Build shapes with values. Try with simple objects first.
Hey I'm new to this stuff but I'm planning on coming here more often to git gud at art.

>doesn't know how to google things.
>>3087801
why does paper matter? its not going to make you draw better
>>3087801
any sketchbook will work. dont use printer paper though its not very good..
i use canson univeral sketch books they are nice and smooth and fairly durable and cheap and have lots of pages.
just depends on the feel you are looking for
>>3087814
different paper has different quality which can yield different results. though nothing will help bad drawing except practice. but good paper is sometimes important.
>>3087813
ok lad, what would you google to find proper results, i dont think there is any combination of words that would get decent results.
>>3087822
whatever book name you are looking for .pdf
what are you looking for.

i love twin peaks.
>>3087809
What kind of style are you going for? If it's a realistic hairstyle, you'll probably have a better time looking up tutorials with the term "realistic" instead of just "hair".
Iirc, you start painting realistic hair with the darkest shade of your chosen colour as the base and work up from the darkest value to the lighest. You use the lighter values to help shape the hair as wellas delevop sections/chunks of hair.
Also know what your light source is. It'll help with the colour layering and form.

>why does paper matter? its not going to make you draw better
I know it doesn't matter much. But if I'm going to draw 200+ sketches on the same type of paper, I might as well choose one that feels good under the pencil.
>>3087116
For what it's worth, I believe in you anon. Keep going and don't give up
if i read how do draw (scott Robinson) will i lose skill? it seems to be industrial design focused and i want to aim for way more realistic (which industrial seems to hinder)
>>3087373
Most skin tones are a umber plus a blue/red/yellow and white.
>>3087902
Are you retarded or just 14 years old?
Proportions are way off, and I don't know how to add midtones without it looking scribbly.

>>3087950

>>3087955
I can't fix any one part, the whole face is wrong. Or you mean redraw the whole thing? I'm far too lazy. I'd rather just study what I messed up and take that info with me on my next drawing.
>>3087957
either way, i used to redraw pretty frequently
>>3087950
Get a softer pencil and smudge it to smooth out the tones.
Or settle with scribbly, consistent scribbles can look nice. Just try and add them in.
And if everything still looks off after that, try it again.
>>3087899
thanks m8
I feel like a lot of my progress is simply just me getting over some stupid trivial fear of whatever. At first I was just doing line drawings cuz I was scared of not understanding value. I was scared to try beard stubble, but with patient stippling it's pretty easy. Now I'm just scared of midtones. Does anyone else have a similar experience?
Guys,
I realize that it'd probably be helpful for me if I had a physical copy of a book that I can always refer to rather than just always have ebooks. Something cheaper off of Amazon, preferably. What should I go for?
Pic related is something I'm interested in, but don't know if's really a heavy-hitter. I certainly love its approach to anatomy.
>>3088136

I like 'Anatomy: A Complete Guide for Artists'
by Joseph Sheppard
>>3088037
thats definitely what starting out is like.
afterwards youll struggle to find something thats missing from your art.
then i guess its just a matter of honing your art.
this is why people say draw draw draw. because theres so many "phases" to get over until what you make is worth a shite.
what does /beg/ think of my fruit salad?
>>3086982
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nauBhzjx584
this should help for proportions at least
>>3086948
you havent done anything anatomically correct so critique is a limitless and therefore pointless exercise.
>>3088206
Would plow into mouth, if it was real.
>>3088262
That guy wasn't me. Also "it's too bad to even begin working on improving it" is bullshit that helps no one.
>>3088328
Except in this case it's true.
>>3088328
"you forgot [long list of muscles]", "[every other muscle] is out of place" and "the pose feels stiff" is a summary of the critiques, and it feels like that would be a waste of time saying.
>>3088330
Then at least offer *something* instead of passive bullshit. If you have nothing to add then there's no reason to comment except for pettiness which is what the rest of the board is for.
Why can't I make a clean smooth line on paper but not with a tablet, /ic/? I think I miss the texture, I don't know
Please, give me tips on linework practice
