TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So when I draw from, reference/without construction, I can get it to look Reasonable, but if I draw with construction it looks like toddler tier drawing.

Not him, but for some programs with better brush engines it helps with blending. It can also make things feel a little more integrated for painterly stuff (having dozens of different layers can sometimes make stuff seem kind of disjointed).

It's also just comfier. I hate layer management, I tend to merge down pretty regularly. It really pulls me out of it when I have to find the right layer, and its fucking annoying when you accidentally do a bunch on the wrong layer.

Hey /beg/, I know Loomis is often recommended for beginner construction, and there's that one really good introductory book on perspective who's name escapes me.

My question is, what is the equivalent of those two books, but for colour/shading? Is there one? Or is that struggle just going to be super long and painful? I just feel like I'm fumbling around in the dark a lot whenever I try to shade something.
>>
>>3028075
colour and values are kept seperate. if you know construction, it's really just filling in the planes with right shading. all shapes are just complex boxes, can you shade a box?
>>
>>3028073
Thank you.
What do you think is at fault with my construction?
I always tend to have trouble sizing the body parts, and then something ends up being bigger than it should be, or it ends up being way too far apart in relation with the other parts.
No matter how much I try to keep sight of this I always end up fucking up something somehow and I have no idea how to correct this.
>>
>>3028008
Eh, same thing happens to me, but I've practiced 10 times more from reference than without it, so I'd say just practice more construction until you get it right. Don't just abandon it or you're gonna be like those musicians that can't play 2 chords if they don't have a sheet in front of them.

I made a halftone pattern using this method:

OK, but I've already drawn every head in Fun With a Pencil at least once. And the drawings of the heads from the ball-and-plane pages I've been practicing every day. I guess all of those are probably symbol drawings too. If I just keep drawing those same heads over and over I'm guessing it won't much good right?

One of the things Loomis reccomends practicing is drawing consistent proportions. So I'm trying to take the same head and drawing it a different angles. It's hard to tell when you're doing things right though. That's why I asked the question. I don't have any pretentions that any of these are good, I just want to focus on getting this one thing right and going from there.
>>
>>3028411
I think that other anon was being retarded. Loomis's proportions are... interesting. Not terribly wrong, probably not what you should base your life's work off of. You ARE to some degree symbol drawing, but that's probably not your main concern, and Loomis isn't who you need to help you with that. You're practicing construction, and you want construction tips.

I feel like there are anons more qualified to answer your question than I am, ao Inll stop there.
>>
Shit, I think I finally understand perspective to the point where I could make a floor plan and draw it in perspective.

Gonna give it a try and see if I can make it work. Literally going to measure up everything in my room lol.
>>
>>3028272
not entirely sure what you're asking, but 5 and 9 are the ones that aren't exactly "uniform" with the rest. Regarding proportions, in all of your heads, the line from the top of the brow to the bottom of the nose is a bit longer than bottom of nose to chin. It's not that big of a deal, because not every head perfectly adheres to these proportions, but it's something to keep in mind if you're trying to memorise them. However, It becomes a problem when the character opens their mouth, because you have to account for the jaw dropping and the chin being lowered, which is something you haven't done
>>
>>3027734

I'd say when doing construction the point isn't to make something beautiful, it's for you to reason out what this is and where it is in space. It's okay if it's not beautiful, because it's just the foundation. Just make sure it's not so messy that you can't read the forms. Keep at it.

If there's something you'll be good at anon is having a career in painting planets.

I think from a distance, it's good but even then i'm seeing some issues with values, most notable with the hair. The guy in the origional has very glistening hair, and while you've started that,
you're not going quite as far as you could. I think that's true too for things like his forehead and nose bridge, other parts of the face basically. Again, I can tell you have the idea, but don't be afraid to go brighter otherwise things start to get a little muddy and boring, maybe as a form of self-critique you could play the value game with yourself. Color pick the area of the guy, the same area on your drawing and see how different they are.
Also, I think that your work is kind of suffering from that "blurred too much" look when we get
a little closer. Don't be afraid to give some visual interest by leaving some edges sharp when they warrant it, and that's something I think you'll develop and eye for if you try and look for when that would be appropriate..
I'm not the best at critique but hopefully this helped.
Keep at it.

Current WIP, wondering i the construction of the torso looks fine. I cant shake the feeling that the perspective of the box is off. Like the angle is too small or i dont have the right plane of the box attached to the shoulder.

Unless you are painting shiny texture less smooth metal i would stay away from the air brush. Use hard brushes of different shapes and dont worry about blending. Just lay down accurate tiles.

You made the perspective of the chest more like a two dimensional plane instead of having the breast come off of it as separate objects. Try varying the centrelines outward, follow the forms of the breast.

I really didn't feel like doing this shit today but I decided maybe trying to figure out anatomy (i guess thats what this is?) by drawing it over some figures.

I'm sure it's cringy to look at to people who know where everything is supposed to go but its only my second day caring about this shit.

An anon in the previous /beg/ thread pointed me to this Michael Hampton Figure drawing book. I kinda skimmed through it and liked drawing the ribcage and pelvis over some shitty 3d boxes like I used to do. I haven't actually read anything in it yet.
>>
>>3028556
Well in real life it would be about an ice with between the jaw and face the mouth, but in this case I was just using my instincts to give her a little bit of a bone there. But where the job ends on either side of that line item through through her mouth area that is more deliberate - Women have lower jaws then men and if that is a common place for it to turn. I'm sure there is an exact relationship that you could find out about online but I don't know it.

What's important here is that you make room for the jaw that would be there even though its a cartoon character and not quite the same as a realistic jaw. Relationships are more important than actual/absolute proportions, I think.

If anyone else out there is a depressed NEET, how did you overcome the lack of energy and the sadness over how much you suck at first to start practicing and keep at it long enough to improve?

I've tried to get started and work up the mental discipline to start learning to draw but it has always amounted to a couple days of lackluster attempts following "You can draw in 30 days!" type books or failing at the first chapter of lessons at Drawabox before the willpower is gone again and it's back to regret.

Should I just OD on caffeine pills or some shit and hope THAT gives me the energy to put real time into learning?

Change your motivation. Treat art like problem-solving. Don't limit your tools – use references if you have to. Remember the real goal of art is to make something enjoyable to look at, not to be perfect, and not to immediately be able to draw perfectly without reference etc. etc. instead the point is to have fun and make something very appealing. Something else that helped me was becoming a Christian. I believe it helped my emotional maturity and despite what people say about religion I have become more logical and cool headed.

>>
>>3028561
Eyes width, job = jaw, item = going through, if that - that is a common...

Sorry for the mess that AutoCorrect made. I use the voice recognition because it would take way too long to type with my finger.
>>
>>3028568
That's a hard one, because art is a very perfectionist craft. Maybe work more slowly and deliberately. I don't know – maybe if you show some of your artwork or tell us which art is yours someone can think of the right advice. ( ignoring troll responses of course )
>>
>>3028558
That's a good start. The main idea is that your figure drawings will always be structured by the ribcage and pelvis. So if you know where those are, how they connect and bend, you'll be able to draw any figure. Try tracing over nude models instead so you can actually see the anatomy. Use Loomis proportions as a rough guide for now.

Also, you don't need to learn anatomy that way, piece by piece. You first need to learn construction and gesture, then anatomy will become easier to grasp as it gets added onto it. Most importantly, learn the ribcage, spine, pelvis, and clavicles.

Have you checked out Proko's channel? Check the gesture videos and the bean videos.
>>
>>3028568
Realize that being a perfectionist takes at least ten years. Then realize how far you got in just your short amount of time.
>>
>>3028562
Momentum and passion, anon. The MOST important thing is trying to find why. Why are you even doing this? Are you doing it just to do it, or do you have a dream. If you have a dream and a passion for it, then you can set up goals to reach it. If you have no reason for doing it, and you want to be professional about it, don't.

Draw what you like, you'll always have that. I totally recommend ONLY doing studies is the quickest way to burn out and hate drawing. You need to have a good mix of studying fundamentals and the people you look up to but also leaving time for yourself to have fun too.

I can't help you be less of a perfectionist, but for me, you just have to take a deep breath and accept what you did. This is just one drawing, and if you want to live on your art, you will do so many drawings, easily thousands, this drawing is only a small step. Not every drawing will be good. Maybe you just need some friends who will be able to be that voice for you until it's in you.

Feel free to post your art.

Your background is too bright. It makes it seem like your overcompensating for this by making your painting darker in comparison to the reference. You're missing the highlights and the midtones are darker than they should be.
>>

Directly copying and studying other artist
What should i fix
>>
>>3028595
I don't know because I don't really see what you're copying from, but that's a very, very awkward way to put on tall socks.
>>
>>3028595
Not sure if you're good or if you're just good at copying what the artist did to some extent. Pretty much, what are you even asking? Did you learn anything from this? About the pose? The lines?
>>

>that coloring on the ref

>>

>>
>>3028604
Drawabox really helped me with this. You are smart enough, just takes time. Drawing from real life also helps.
>>
>>3028599
Before into coloring, gonna fix some wrong form or anatomy
Purpose of doing this is learn 'how to complete piece' because i never did it before
>>
>>3028604
That's just an excuse. If you're able to post on /ic/, you're intelligent enough to think in 3D. It's something that has to be learned and that takes time. Don't give up so quick if you haven't gotten what it takes years to perfect. Your eyes already see in 3D if you aren't blind. That's a lot of the ways there already. If you can see a ball, you can probably draw that ball. Same applies to anything else. It just takes more time.
>>
>>3028595
Overlay the original on your drawing and see where you're off if you want to be exact.

Of course you won't be perfect but you might get an idea of some major mistakes you've made. You may have to resize to get the 'best fit'.

I realized that since I was already neet and depressed that I had nothing to lose, with time to do things I've always wanted to do.

So I made an ultimatum. It's either I learn how to draw or never learn at all. If I choose to learn, then I have no excuses to not do it. To add to that, I learned how to be tempered, to keep drawing steadily no matter what my brain says about this or that, whether it's freaking out or not. My reasoning is that it is just a matter of practice. I can improve as long as I am approaching it in a practical way like learning other skills.

>always amounted to a couple days of lackluster attempts following "You can draw in 30 days!"
Right, because you attempted this from a manic state. There was too much anxiousness getting into it. You were never going to make it past a week.

It's not required to work up a mental discipline or attitude. You just have to want to learn, one day at a time. It helps to get organized. Create a lesson plan. Think about practicing systematically so that you're not overwhelmed. Streamline your process and then just do it an hour or so per day. Don't overextend yourself.

>Should I just OD on caffeine pills
That actually would not work as it would make you too hyped up to draw. Drawing is an intricate process, you have to sit and be calm enough to create precise lines and shades with your pencil. Do you notice how beginners often start with chicken scratch lines? They have not yet learned to slow down and be precise in their work. A little bit of coffee is fine.

If you're at the beginning, know that it's okay to suck for a while, and you will. Set some time aside to work on one of those beginner drawing courses like draw a box. There is no rush here and you've nothing to lose, but plenty of reward, satisfaction, and confidence gained from the work that you will create.

A lot of my problems is just the depression and perfectionism stacking up over the years, for the longer I've let it go on. Like, part of why I keep kicking myself is that being a NEET, I fully know I've had all the free time in the world for years I could have been, and still could be, using for learning to draw, but haven't. And so when I manage to get the willpower to just sit down for 10 minutes and just try to draw straight lines and work on muscle memory, I dunno, it feels like a way more monumental effort than it is.

I've been trying to tell myself I need to make it regular, and even if it's only for 5 minutes of scribbling, that I need to get into the habit of putting pencil to paper every day, but building that habit hasn't been successful yet and it always gets interrupted or I get worn out or forget for a single day and it usually peters out.

I guess I just wish it was easier for me to channel my massive desire to become an artist into the actual willpower to grind through this every day and for longer than just a paltry minimum

>it feels like a way more monumental effort than it is.
Because you're over thinking it. The story of your life has nothing to do with learning a skill. Also that's not perfectionism. It's fear of failure. But look, failing at drawing as a beginner doesn't mean anything. This is like problem solving. You will fail at it at first till you figure out how to do it right.

>I've been trying to tell myself I need to make it regular, and even if it's only for 5 minutes of scribbling,
You don't need to tell yourself anything. You just sit down and do the practice. Just like doing anything else. Do you have to coax yourself into doing laundry? Do you have to give yourself a motivational speech just to cook your food?

>I guess I just wish it was easier for me to channel my massive desire to become an artist into the actual willpower
Get rid of that nonsense about "massive desire" and "wllpower". Just draw. It's easy if you take it day by day. For one hour, practice gestures. The next day, practice construction. Focus only on that. You're making it harder by looking at the long journey ahead. If you do that, you will never get anywhere. But if you just start, you will eventually be further ahead than you've ever been.

firstly, learn how to deconstruct things. break down what shapes your foot is made out of into simple, easy to understand 3d shapes. then draw those shapes at different angles.

second, your fingers are weird. contrary to popular belief, your fingertips are not cubes, they are closer to a trapezoid. notice how your fingertips curve slightly towards your nail compared to the blocky look of the rest of your finger?

im not going to comment to much on your perspective because until you (>>3029156), going into detail would be a fruitless endeavor, but ill still give your the cliff notes.
what angle am i looking at your character with? im i looking down from the knee? because the foot is clearly underneath me. am i looking up at her crotch? because thats clearly above me. am i looking at her from below, or above? it confuses me to look at it because i dont know where focus.

If you're shit at it, use grid and guidelines. After some time you'd be able to draw perspectives without it.

also why the fuck would i upload my work when making that post

if you cant see the bottom of something, it implies you are above it.
if you cant see the top of something, it implies you are underneath it.
your picture mixes both of these in a way that makes it difficult for me to understand what i am looking at.
>>
>>3029194
are you autistic? the knee is on the horizon line, I guess they were going for a "dynamic pose"
>>
>>3029193

this is why anonymity can be cancer.

Oh well. these faggots are an inevitability.
>>
>>3029201
then go to another community you fucking swine
>>
>>3029194
Are you retarded?
>>
>>3029195
Yes, the horizon line is on the knee, but the issues with scaling makes it really hard to understand whats going on.
For this perspective to work, the left feet has to be raised on a platform, or the viewer has to be at ground level. Neither of those options is portrayed accurately in the picture. Draw the horizon and try to make all the lines work, they just don't
>>
>>3029202

How about your contribute instead of being a standardized version of everything that's wrong with /ic/ m8?
>>
>>3027557
are you using a source?

I feel like that would help. Just look at lots of wooden balls and try to paint a specific one you like.

the last ball looks more wooden than the first two, but I wouldn't say it looks like wood.
>>
>>3029194
>if you cant see the bottom of something, it implies you are above it.

What? What the fuck? What if it's tilted, the viewer is tilted, the HL is tilted? What if the bottom of something is not a plane?
>>
>>3029208
Yeah, I tried looking at a bunch of wood shit, but I think I should try to paint other things and see if I have some "eureka" moment. Gonna read that scott's render book too.
>>
>>3029125
you are symbol drawing facial structures (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.)

draw what you see, like you did with her body

>>
>>3027542
quit using graph paper
>>
>>3029209
>what if its tilted
the "above" and "below" change based on that tilt.
>what if the bottom is something that is not a plane
like when you are shorter than someone and when you look up to them you see the bottom of there chin?

>>3029216
i draw what i see and i saw a fucking cube for a foot. sue me.
>>
>>3029213
after browsing through some pick a specific one and try to paint it

don't look through a bunch and paint a ball that has features they share; pick one, and attempt to draw it as it is
>>
>>3029207
ironic coming from Dunning-Kruger McGee
>>
>>3029222
What the fuck is a bottom of a sphere? That is too vague to be something useful, is needs to be more precise. Like saying "if you look at a cube" or defining what kinds of objects would follow and what wouldn't follow that rule.

I know that's a bit autistic, but that's generally how geometry and all that shit is defined in books, so to not generate ambiguity or confusion.
>>
>>3029230
i provided a picture, i thought that would clear up the ambiguity to a satisfactory standard. apparently not.

Help, /ic/
I fucked up my measurements and now I cant figure out how to put in this head and arm and keep proportions. Do I:
a) Just leave it as it is now and paint it in so that the piece is finished?
b) Study a bunch of anatomy to finish this piece?
c) Work with what I have by having her head and arm physically cut off?
d) Leave it, as I've already learnt what I needed to from it?
e) Something else (specify)
>>
/beg/, the true test of skill is how well you can draw a penis. Do you have what it takes?

Won't have the time to shade and finish this tonight. His forehead and the mid part of his face are both a bit too long and I still suck at jaw contours, but I feel it's close enough for me to not completely hate myself.

Any good general advice on shading?

Just draw it from sight? How hard can that be? Literally one of the first things /ic/ tells you to go learn.

I feel like it something wrong with the eyes in relation to the head or something but I feel like I'm taking shots in the dark trying to make it work.

No, NoseBro is just a prick.

I would suggest going to the alternative art general instead. There's usually a much wider range of skill there and usually most Anime esque shit is posted there.

Study skulls.

Study each features of the face. Nose, Eye, Lips.

After about 50 to 100 of those come back to this photo.
