IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

also look at the left side of his cheek it looks good because of gradations of value and the line defining it is one of the brightest points not a black line. try toning down your paper then working with an eraser for the lights and a piece of charcoal for the darks.

also make the eyes bigger. try to do a really loose and light sketch first to put everything in the right place then work in the detail.

Assuming your document is at a usable resolution, squint/ unfocus your eyes at the hand to get the largest shapes you see. If you are seeing more and 2 or 3 major shapes, squint harder. Then the next largest, and so on. Big to small. If you know how to paint your primary forms (boxes, cylinders, spheres) you are already well on your way.

It's important to combine your knowledge of anatomy; balance what you see and what you know. That way you aren't a slave to the reference, and eventually have more freedom to dabble in design. (Don't take that as a knock against using ref, keep using ref)

TL;DR Big to small.

I'm just using regular HB leads, thinking of going out and grabbing a 4B pencil or something. My scanner likes to eat most of the nuances leaving only bright grays or pitch blacks with barely anything inbetween, the right side was originally a bit more shaded.

Definitely going to try the toning + eraser thing next time.

Depends how deep in anatomy you want to get. After a decent amount of mileage though, be surprised how much of that detail becomes second nature.

>>3025267
Hyperbolic I'm sure. Look up deliberate practice techniques. They may only account for -20% of ability, but they are still important.

>>3025272
Would keep working on perspective. Try using cross contours and more overlapping forms for a while to help pop out the otherwise flat symbols. Not bad on the line quality though.

Been doing this for six months. Really depressed through.

Would recommend drawabox and Scott Robertson books.

>>
>>3025275
Just have to hammer in more contrast. Bring in cast shadow, and get a highlight on the highest planes relative to hour light source. Still looking good though.

>>3025283
Identify the source. No, stop rolling your eyes and listen gaylord; you want to get over this or not? Right. Now then. Really ask yourself why, and when you come up with an answer, ask why that's the case. Then analyze and pose solutions to those answers. Some say 5 whys, but different for each person.

Example
I procrastinate. Why?
I'd rather fap/ game. Why?
Because I'm avoiding work. Why?
Because all my work looks like shit. Why?
Because I fap instead of working.
//Hitting a loop is normal, but there's almost always something else at work you've not considered//
Analyzing...ah yes! The Self-Fuckery Cycle
Overly self-critical -> Avoidance - > Cope Fapping/ Video Games/ Youtube Loop/ etc

How to fix? Focus on the process of improvement. Find how to enjoy the daily routines involved in leveling up. Forget about making pretty things to post, that's an ego trap that will fuck you up more often than not. If you can't find genuine pleasure in the practice of drawing daily, this may not be for you.

Now it's your turn, but don't post your answer. This is a personal conversation you need to have with yourself. Also none of us care all that much.

I procrastinate because I know I am not going to improve anyway, no matter what I do, and this comes from someone who has drawn almost every single day in the past. I cant do it now anymore, im still in the /beg/ thread and my drawings are awful, I am not improving so any motivation is just gone. Procrastinating is so easy for me now because I know if im gonna put effort into practicing im not going to improve anyway.
>>
>>3025336
That's stupid and completely illogical, because you can always improve and you improve every single time you draw as long as it's not the exact same thing. You're eyes probably just suck or you're convincing yourself you aren't improving so you can quit like a pathetic faggot. Study up on the fundamentals again, it's impossible to not improve unless you're not trying. If you don't want to, then just quit and leave. You'll live a happier life.
>>
>>3025282

>>
>>3025249
Face is too long. Eyes too high and too wide. Face is about 4 eyes wide as a basic rule of thumb.
>>
>>3025336
Okay anon, let's take a look at this from a different point of view.

Anyone who has done the journey of art progression wanted art skills so much that they felt like they had no choice but to go through the grind even if there was a possibility that they would never improve.

So how much do you want art skills? From what you're saying, your fear of failing is overriding your desire to get good. You desire to avoid facing failure more than you desire art skills. It's as simple as that. So all you have to do is ask yourself what do you want and how much do you want it. If you want to improve, practice. If not, you will never improve.

Improvement isn't an accident or by chance. Your mindset is that if you practice you will somehow magically gain levels. You're upset because it's not happening. It will never happen like that. That's not how practice works.

Practice is deliberate every step of the way. You learn how to improve, how to do it better. Skill is something you build, step by step. You draw something, you study what needs work and how to do it better, then you apply. You are doing each step, solving each problem, moving on to the next level.

If you practice in this way, there is no reason why you should not improve. There is no reason why you can't learn how to do something if you're applying yourself. Drawing is a skill like anything else. You've learned many other skills in your life haven't you? There are probably some things you are an expert at. So how is learning to draw any different? If you want it enough, you can deliberately practice and improve one step at a time no matter what.
>>
>>3025336
Thats not true.

Thats why I make sure to never comepletely erase my canvas and just hide layers so I can look back and see my improvement.

I guess I was just looking for some tips on how to always get correct body porportions. Like I always have a problem where either my arms are too short. My torso is longer than my legs, etc.

I guess this is down to inexperience. But if there was like an on screen ruler or something digital artists use I would love to know.
>>
>>3025736
pull out a ruler and place it on your screen. You are better off eye balling thought, building up that skill or everything you draw will be stiff as fuck forever
>>
>>3025741
what are you like nowadays?
>>3025743
the thing is, as a rule of thumb i dont answer questions that are based in impatience. The answers can be literally anything. Just know that once youve gained an INTUITIVE grasp of what you're doing, nothing else matters. Some pros never gain intuitiveness and that slows them down and may even hurt them. Just know that what you're being thought right now is irrelevant at the peak of art. No matter how you go about it, you eventually reach your stride. In your case if you know your torso and legs are too short too long that's not really a question. You know how to fix that.

You could have done a lot worse and seem to be conscious of your mistakes, so I'd say you have all prerequisites to be able to get good some day.

Try simpler subjects (faces are notoriously hard for beginners) or do it again with the reference flipped upside down. Make sure to measure things more carefully and compare horizontal and vertical alignments of different facial features to ensure they don't get misaligned.

How do I construct like that figure in the bottom left?
>>
>>3026452
This was on one of my better days though. I can only draw like that very rarely. I still think of myself as a beginner-intermediate. Mostly when drawing I try to check my angles, ask myself "does the figure REALLY look like that?" and when doing shading I try and look back and forth as much as possible to see if the values are too light or heavy. I've been drawing all of my life but very much on and off. It's only in 2017 that I've started to take it seriously.

I hate to dissapoint but I don't have much info on construction. I just copied the bottom left from an image. I would recommend Andrew Loomis though, but I'm sure you've heard of that guy.

you may find it more helpful to draw the face multiple times. First time you draw it like an instagram-tier photocopier, wherein you just draw what you see as lines and color (well, value) fields. That is, it should 99% match the photo you're working with. It shouldn't be thinking about form, just contour and measurement etc.

Then go back again and draw a very simple deconstruction in form, then a more complex one, then more and more complex, while looking up references on how to construct noses if you can't figure it out on your own.

do studies of images upside down. Symbol drawing happens because you see something like an eye and go "okay, I'll just draw an eye here", instead of drawing what you're actually seeing. Doing an upside down study helps you to see the object as a relationship between actual shapes, as opposed to just falling back on what you think you know

It also helps to measure as best as you can, measurements don't lie

you can think of it like a camera, and moving the vanishing points closer or farther changes the type of lens. having them that close together messes things up since it's not how the human eye sees at all, and is closer to a fisheye lens. there would be way more distortion in how everything looks if you wanted to draw it accurately with the points so close. look up 'field of view' and 'focal length'.

So my personal observation trying to understand figure construction, it's much less beneficial drawing over an image than it is to look at it from the side and draw it on a blank canvas.
My mind really wants to trace when i'm drawing over something for reference.

I'm probably not going to do that anymore.

nigger one year is too long stop fucking symbol drawing

learn to draw what you fucking see, to do that you need to practice values and rendering, it will improve your sight and how you measure distances and sizes

you're just not observing it well enough, in both of them you drew the eyes and the mouth in the wrong angle, look at the angle before you draw, you know it's not fucking straight, you are not blind, you can see they're titled, then draw them tilted

Your gestures and construction are really stiff. Not sure why you're dividing the body that way. There's a better way of doing the torso, and that is to separate between the ribcage and the pelvis. Then connect via a soft midsection that twists and bends. Learn your landmarks instead of guessing where parts end and begin. Also if you're going to trace, do it right, mark where the pelvis and ribcage are. Find the center line and the spine. Trace the abdomen to see how it stretches. Find the beginning of the legs and arms. Mark the clavicles.

Also read Michael Hampton's book. It will help you a lot.

Are there any value cheat sheets for the human body? Kind of like how on the face, the brow, forehead, cheeks and nose tend to be brighter. Lower lip brighter than upper. That kind of stuff.

I am thinking of doing a project, where I have to measure up my room and the most significant objects in it, make a plan and then draw it all accurately in Perspective.
If I can make this work, I should be able to design any environment by studying it's proportions, right?

I was taught a method to do that in a drafting class from my architecture major a few years ago. I wish i had a name for you. It looks exactly like this pic i fished from google looking up 'drawing perspective with floorplans'. I've skimmed through robertsons book and i think he teaches something similar.

Learning to draw from imagination here.
Can anyone comment on iterative drawing https://youtu.be/k0ufz75UvHs?t=9m31s to 13m

I'm actually learning a lot about whatever I'm studying even though I'm just starting out with anatomy, seeing what's wrong and doing another take on it. The grind is extreme though, but apparently it's required if you try to cram so much information so quickly.

Anyone else done this?
>>
>>3027411
Why is the first one so much better than all the other ones? Drawing from imagination by the way is just drawing from memory.
>>
>>3027412
First one was referenced detail for detail.
The rest are changing features to see what makes a skull look like a skull and also no reference until completed.
>>
>spend half hour drawing portrait
>do tons of fucking tweaks and adjustments
>wow it really looks like the ref
>do over lay
>a few things are slightly off, mouth is wrong size, eyes aren't on the right plane, face is slightly too wide.
>fix them so that its almost literally traced
>doesn't look like the ref

why
>>
Is gesture drawing the best to focus on for someone who can draw monsters and inhuman things but can't into human anatomy and proportions ?
>>
think i might be retarded
>>
>>3027425
I believe in you!
>>
>>3027421
Tracing makes you lose the subtle things like line weight. Also, you didn't spend all that much time either.
>>
>>3027427
i didnt trace. i said i made the adjustments with transform and move so that things line up perfectly AS IF it were traced. but it resembles the ref less than it did before

First attempt at water color.
How do you get proportions right with only applying the color?
Do you draw an outline/sketch before that?
>>
>>3027430
Try to mirror both the ref and your drawing.
>>
>>3027447
what does that mean
>>
>>3027448
That means you could be too used to your drawing and the ref, try to compare them mirroed and see if that's the case. Could just not be too, idk.

wait do you mean have them 'facing' each other in the two windows?
