If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Learn sighting methods. I forgot the name of all of them, but the idea is to stick with one and physically use it until you naturally can visualize it and do it automatically. There's comparative, plumb line, grid and others. Maybe someone has the image that explains them.

Really though, just hold your pencil up in front of your eye and use it to take angles and measurements. It's not cheating, it's training your eye.

Keep drawing what you like.

Glad you found the Reiq videos helpful.

Few pointers.

Remember at the top outside corner of the eye, you are wrapping around a sphere.

Also remember that collar bones end on top of the shoulder. You don't need to be an anatomy expert, but prominent points are important - they are fundamental anchors around which you can stylize the character..

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but whatever.
>>
>>2980080
Very thin strokes and more horizontal direction of the lower eyelashes will save your soul. Don't draw them like they've got a ton of makeup applied, that's all.
>>
>>2980080

Follow up question.
How do you do highlights on paper? White pencil didn't do jack and I don't like using white paint, because it just looks like stains. The best method I found was, simply leaving the highlighted area blank, but the effect is lack luster.
>>
>>2980091
use darker paper
>>
>>2980084
I don't think his picture resembles your animoo even the slightest bit, bruh.

>>2980087
Why did she shift her jaw to the left? Any particular reason? *scrolls picture down* Oh, right, she's a giraffe, she must be chewing her meal constantly. Although I wonder where are her horns in this case. I don't think you can tuck them inside such flat hair...
And her eyes are of different shape (and, likely, size), although it's clear you worked on them. The eyes are positioned asymmetrically in relation to the nose (one is closer than another), despite all the details suggesting that she's directly facing the viewer.

Overall, you paid some considerable attention to polishing your details, but missed the whole picture, which is a trait that many beginners have. It doesn't look like trash, but it doesn't look good either. You also need to work on your values, i. e. mind the light sources and 3D shape more.

For highlights, I once used a technique of filling the area with my pencil and erasing the highlights, but I wonder if it actually looks good. Well, it looked shiny at least.
>>
>>2980103
Damn, you're right I totally messed up the symmetry and I guess the neck is a little long too.
The erasing idea doesn't seem too bad, I might give it a shot. Thanks!

you don't leave white spots but fade them out. Observe how glows work. They're usually just white spots with white or colored halo but look brighter than just white. Also if you slightly darken the shades around highlights the highlights look brighter.

There is literally nothing to hook the perspective grid to, although the reflection looks like the well is wider at the surface and the girl is falling into it already (because her silhouette is so long). The time it takes isn't relative - the final result is.

I think you're good enough to start working towards single, finished pieces. Start working on narrative and character, and aiming for your first composition. Who cares if the pose takes an hour? If working from reference speeds it up for you, start hiring models.

I sounds like you may be following the irrational standards that some people hold here. Erasing a lot? Welcome to art. Takes a while? Welcome to art.

Start a finished piece, working large, and start working on the rest. You're ready.

Create a new later, and make a finished drawing over this, omitting the chicken scratches and erased bits and broken lines. Learn to draw longer, flowing lines. Use blue or red to draw, to see the new lines more clearly.

It's all about what you want to get better at, do you want to get better at making mistakes that you clean up or better at getting it right the first time?

It also helps to keep the mistake visible so when you look back you can always see how much you have improved and what you still need to improve on.

I'll also tell you this, those drawings you posted still have many flaws, that eraser is holding you back.
>>
>>2980901
The pose is literally impossible.

Your rendering is different on different parts of the body. You shaded the right leg, the left is solid blocks of color.

Your anatomy is all wrong.

Using an airbrush shadow on a brushed figure on a gradation background? Cop out. Paint a real environment.

The arm holding the gun is poorly cone, shows no knowledge of foreshortening, and the finger's positions are impossible.

The face is a cartoon, the rest is a mish mash of "realistic" rendering. Choose one, make it consistent throughout the piece.

What are the green things around her hips, and where is the rest of the cape?

What is the lighting source?

White scribbles on either side of the head don't make hair.

Your proportions are all over the place - the left arm, the upper arm is too small, and the forearm too long. The hand - just now. Again, choose cartooning, or realistic.

The hips and the thighs...just no.

I'll be blunt - this is low grade fan art. It's what I would expect to see from someone who hasn't started taking art classes yet. The mistakes are the classic kinds made by beginners with no training at all.

Go back to the beginning of it all, start learning form, anatomy, and basic drawing skills.

I'm a lurker and this is my first time posting so I'm sure more seasoned artists can elaborate further, but here's what jumped out at me:

1. Boobs don't look like that but I think I know what you were going for stylistically. Smooth out the top shading a lil bit, the hard line is odd, take her gem into account too

2. Lineart is a bit uneven. Try using a stabilizer or using quicker motions--it's better on the shirt than it is elsewhere

3. The blending on the hair is a bit odd and clashes with the rest of the shading. I'd switch to a gradient or just leave it flat with the cel shading

4. There is a black spot on the eyebrow and the hair above it--it's a small detail but it makes it look a lot more complete if you double check and take the time to fix it

5. Just in general a lot of it looks rushed. The parts that are shaded could be smoother, not all of it matches up to the lines. The ends of the hair strands aren't colored in, too. If you spent the extra time working on that it would be much better.

Keep at it!!

not exactly major advice but that little area in between the left arm + the boob would look better if it was black since you were shading like that elsewhere.

did you actually learn something while doing these figures? That's the question you constantly want to ask yourself. You have to learn shortcuts, memorize shapes, become more confident with certain lines etc. while practicing. If you're doing these 1 hour figures and you're not learning anything from them, then you're wasting your time. The learning process is for the most part not an unconscious thing where you automatically get better.

Minimum 200% of actual size, at 300 dpi. For things like games, you'll be using the art for the box, too, so do that size - it's always better to size art down. A cD jewel case insert is 4.75"x4.75", so I would make a canvas at 10"x10", @ 300 dpi.

You need to work on edges, and painting the form. Also, take the tube of black out of your artbox, don't use it - use colors for shadows.

How you handled the shadow doesn't work. There are a couple of ways to handle it, either do a large wash of the table top, flood it with the brown, and then when it drying, add in a shadow color - Payne's Grey is the preferred color for shadows with watercolor. The other way is to paint the brown of the table top, then let it dry completely (use a hair dryer to speed it up), then put a transparent wash of Paynes Grey or a dark blue over it.

Watercolor is all about learning and controlling washes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmRBZB_o8MM
Close your eyes and listen to it until there is a vaguely clear image in your mind. Holding the image in your mind, start the BGM again, immediately grab your tool calmly and draw with wild strokes that what was formed inside your mind. Fuck construction, just go with the flow.
Do you like what is forming on your canvas? Does it resemble your idea? If yes, you're starting to get what art is.

RE: I have no idea how to render or what I'm doing digitally
>>
>>2981611
Well, I was pretty much in the same boat as you were. being a logical thinker and all that. In fact i surprised my whole family when I started doing artsy stuff. Just remember that every artist is different. One may be able to splotch colours on a canvas to evoke emotion, while others may do intricate architectural works. It all depends on what you want to do.

As for the stiffness, don't worry about it. If you force yourself to draw organic stuff like people (which is the way I did it) through either figure drawings or preferably even gesture drawing, you'll loosen up. everything can be learned and as you continue to draw you'll learn to turn off your brain.

I-Is this a serious post?
Can one person really be this new?
>>
>>2981622
I did edit it using my phone and it spat out that filenames. I can upload different pictured to prove it, but I dunno how else to prove it. It's like some things feeding a mouth and a rock face guy.

Thanks for being a worthless piece of shit. It really suits you.

Anyone has a link for force by Michael Matessi? I tried the artbook theead and they just called me a faggot.

How will you ever be this popular?

I fucking hate this feel, my mind keeps playing tricks on me and letting me make no progress.

Idk which one you want, he has tons of books all named Force. But basically google the name of the book and add "vk" to it. VK.com is a Russian facebook that has tons of pirated content, your book will probably be there.
>>
>>2981787
Don't go blaming your mind, anon. You're the one who's scared of a little drawing.

What do I do then? My shit drawings keep bringing me down

Is a vanishing point basically a black hole that sucks everything in it to oblivion?

bad foreshortening on the arm, and idk what's going on on the head... are those eyes? and the foot looks like it's rolling outwards rather than be in a relaxed position
>>

What are your goals? Professional? Personal?

Anyway, 25 is not too late - don't listen to the trolls and aspies here. If you're serious, apply yourself, and work hard, you'll be fine.
>>
>>2981690
As a beginner attempt, it's fine. Now pay attention and try again, and learn how to blend, how to handle lighting, and how to render shapes, forms and volumes correctly. There are so many common mistakes, it would serve you better to try again, and keep trying, and learn more before you post again.
>>
Hey /beg/, how do you find cool poses ? Do I have to scroll down my reference folder or is there something else to do ?

do simple animations.

you'll naturally stumble upon them. more fun than copying from references of naked dudes holding wooden katanas and standing awkwardly.

pretty much. just be sure not to confuse it with your mom asshole, which sucks penises into oblivion

You're better off using software that's actually made for drawing as opposed to retooled photo editing software.

Since there are so many people who feel they don't make any progress or in general feel bad about their art, I thought I'd share this graph I've stolen from DA, made by Shattered-earth. Just keep it in mind.

I've been in a plateau for a solid year now. It's infuriating.

stop giving people advice, clearly you have bad intentions or you are stupid. photoshop is generally the best program for art. The brush mechanics, the RAM use, the amount of tools you have to work with... seriously.

then again you are probably a mad SAIfag so, yeah.

Why is it so hard to keep a consistent style?

Each different shot changes the overall charcter for some reason
>>
>>2982039
>do simple animations
and for those of us who don't want to take up a worthless skill?
>>
>>2982063
It's hard because you're trying to "keep a style" before you even know how to draw correctly. Style develops through study.
>>
>>2982065
>worthless skill
talking about animation ?
>>
>>2982067
yes
bear in mind I'm talking about me personally
I'm not remotely interested in taking up animation, so what's a good tip for people like me, who see animation as useless to their development?
>>
>>2982069
Do you know Bastien Vives ?
>>
>>2982063
first learn how basic anatomy works, then break the rules to twist it the way you want. It wont work the other way around. also might want to try using construction lines.

>>2982070
Well, Bastien Vives said that is you want to draw comics, you need to learn animation first; Because you're learning to draw lively things, we don't need clear lines but we need to understand what is going on (I'm translating this from French so it might be not really clear, so here you have one drawing made by Vives)

I already do construction lines, my line thickness is my major problem

I re-draw it over twice
>>
>>2982070
>>2982082
So I'm not that guy (>>2982039) but I think that if you want to draw good and naturals poses, you need to draw something in movement from life, like someone passing by, or people dancing, not from a photo
>>
>>2982084
no that's not the major problem, you don't give the same proportions to your faces. But if you don't want to redraw your lines, change you stance, don't let your elbow touch your desk, draw standing up, or draw with something that you can't erase, to become more confident
>>
>>2982084
>my line thickness is my major problem
No, you not knowing how to draw anything without resorting to shitty symbol drawing is your major problem. Stop drawing anime for now, and study from real life.
>>
>>2980387

Don't worry about timing yourself man, just spend however long you need to get it right.
>>
>>2981202
thank you, Do you have any tips on brushes?
>>
>>2982084
As has been said before, your lines aren't your problem. You don't know your basic anatomy. use reference and do life drawings. might as well read up on some Loomis.

None of the answers provided any specific example and just labeled off the same buzz words used by every single poster to describe almost any art posted

What is the basic anatomy that you believe im missing

>>
>>2982134
Look at two of your faces here>>2982063
They look like different people, because you don't know how to draw some point of view. The only way to get better is to practice more, and the best way to practice is to draw from life; but maybe you don't know the meaning of "drawing from life"

Well because one is based off of anatomy and one is based off of an anime design

No shit they're going to be different

Anime is 2d and simplistic and faster to do
While Bones and 3d have depth to the face and generally take longer with more care

I'm asking on tips on how to keep a constant style and all I get is tips on fucking loomis

God why is this such a fucking hard concept to understand
>>
>>2982172
You already got the constant style shit
the only thing not constant is your anatomy
>>
>>2982177
It's not though

In most mangaku the overall style tends to stay the same no matter what the position it's put in

If you look at what I drew
1 and 2 are completely different characters
3 is from some romance anime
4 is fucking retarded
5 reminds me of steven universe
and 7 is an alien

That's not a constant style anon

Dude, it's simple. Almost everything artists draw have a real life counter part. To create a stylization means you take that real life counter part and twist and bend the rules a bit to your liking. A successful style is one that is consistent in the rules they break and adaptations they make. So for your art to look uniform and good, you need to not see your art as some flat 2 plane, but a 3d model that is conveyed on a 2d plane with your set of rules.

Even when creating a convincing fantasy concept like a creature or armour or whatever, you still have to think of how it would work, otherwise it would just seem awkward and amateuristic.

You however seem to think following some shitty anime tutorials will make your art good and will be a short cut to succes, which it isn't.
>>
>>2982181
well the style is the same, same shading, almost same big eyes, hair with no volume, thin neck, almost invisible nose when you're in front, the only thing different is the anatomy, thrust me
