If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Mostly beginners, I think. Sometimes intermediate artists take the time to answer some questions or do some redlines, but personally I visit these threads rarely. At this stage the best tip is to just keep drawing what you like anyway.

After several years I think I get it. I understand why so many beginners "lack the spark" at struggle the most with the basics. Artists are not photocopiers; they cheat. They like to pretend the world is far simpler than it really is. A muscular arm is not a true, anatomical arm. It is only shapes with "anatomy" being nothing more than a definition for form. We are all hacks who can't draw anything other than manipulated shapes.

drawing people by imagination?
or drawing people from reference?
Trick question, answer is by drawing consistently
>>
>>2977972
yeah its easier to load now

your drawing looks like you're not drawing the reference
it looks like you drew an outline of a head and the placed what you visually saw piece by piece
Thats why the eyes and mouth are tiny
nose is too long
and forehead larger in your drawing

To fix this you're gonna want to mentally cut the face into pieces
that way you can place everything in the right size and proportion.

I'm working in this one, really happy with the legs but idk how to do the torso and the head, please someone redline
>>
>>2978116
If you're happy with the legs, take some time to trace a full frontal photo. The thing is, thighs are longer than lower legs and it's impossible for them to be so thin unless your character has been starving for months (which is kinda possible due to sagging breasts that lost their fat and a kinda fat stomach). It is also painful for me to stand with my legs at this angle.

Anyway, it's not worth redlining, frankly. You managed to fuck up pretty much everything. Please refer to https://sketchfab.com/models/e8813c9dc7764c9fb8bc956ff7543bba or real life photos. A human anatomy book might be better though.

Inaccurate, but not a complete fail. The differences that I notice at a glance are:
1) The way he holds his weapon.
2) The size of most elements of his armour, which also leaves much more of his chest exposed.
3) The completely different head.
4) Less detail.
5) The lack of a fur coat.
6) Legs are longer than in the reference.
7) A lot less imposing/threatening atmosphere, which is pretty much the main reason I call your attempt bad.

How important are brushes in photoshop?
>>
>>2978185
I mean fancy brushes you download from homosexual artists
>>
>>2978185
They make achieving their intended purpose easier, and that's it.
>>
>>2978189
>>2978185

Not that important, at least not at the start. Some nice texture brushes help workflow further down the line, but really all you need is a decent hard round and maybe sometimes a soft round (but don't be the retard who abuses the soft round, it looks bad).

I'd actually say that downloading too many brushes at the start will hamper you, not help you. I made the mistake, I had a fuckton of mostly specialized brushes that I was trying to do things with, everything looked bad as a result. It's just clutter.

The best way to grow your brush collection is only to make / download a brush when you actually need that brush.

okay the flowers/vase/shadow are painted in gouache from still life. i used photoshop to try to come up wiht a decent background. is this fine?
>>
>>2978201
No. It's not fine, at all.

First of all, did you even try to dvelop a consistent brush stroke to match the painting part? Simply scribbling with brown on the table doesn't cut it. The scribbling around the flowers leaves too much of a halo, and destroye the painting - again, you didn't even try to match the painterly style of the flowers, and just scribbled with a large round, stock brush for a couple of minutes, and called it a day.

Try it again, but put some more thought and effort into it.

Why is the human face so hard to draw?
>>
>>2978301
Lack of knowledge of facial anatomy and perspective

Learn facial planes and then look at pictures of people with the intent of spotting those planes. Then try to draw faces using what you've learnt either with reference or without. It is not going to look pretty st the start but if you keep rinse and repeating you'll build on your knowledge over time.

saturate your colors more, the picture is a warm shade not a cool shade

dont half ass the hand, paint the whole hand then paint hair over it
you ruined the collar bone
>>

Also, you painted under her chin
in the reference we cannot see under her chin
laugh lines always curve towards the chin
you painted the laughlines curving out this is probably what ruined the perspective of the nose

Is it cheating to use rulers and line smoothing features in digital painting applications?
>>
>>2977954
Pick a better reference image with some kind of strong lighting, some shadows and defined edges. Also closer with more detail if its a portrait. This photo is ridiculous
>>
>>2978425
Of course. But cheating is what separates the productive artist from the unemployed hippy smearing menstrual blood on a canvas.

Mt doom and the tower thing look like part of the cave. Clearly define the foreground mid ground and background

>>
>>2978290
Your biggest issue are proportions, btw. Take a look at the redlines you recieved so far, they are all crappy but at least they have, whilst cartoonish, reasonable proportions.

I know it's a meme at this point, but read some Loomis to step up your proportion game. The worst thing about the picture are the limbs, the whole arms-legs-torso ratio is really fucked up. Long spider-like limbs with a stocky unproportionally small body would work in an uncanny way, but for that you'd have to balance the figure differently. I wouldn't suggest you to go into cartooning right now.

To do:
- practice proportions and measuring
- practice simple forms in perspective

Once you feel comfortable with that you can go study gesture, landmarks and anatomy. At this point any time spend learning bones or muscle groups would be wasted, because you lack the fundamentals.

Take the redlines with a grain of salt, but they show that you lack the 2 most important things when it comes to drawing: proportions and perspective.

Draw those damn center lines! The arms and legs don't even match up. It looks like the limbs are dismembered.
>>
>>2978631
It's not a meme, it's a great book that teaches you how to draw from scratch. It requires critical thinking and the ability to successfully self-critique and learn on your own, which, admittedly, many beginners don't posess.

I wouldn't recommend it to a complete beginner, but it's far from being a meme. Try it out, you have nothing to lose. It's better than starting with figure drawing, that's for sure.

>>
>>2978667
Any part of the body can have a centerline. Don't draw the top and bottom parts as separate pieces. I can kind of see a line for the center of the hand, but you didn't fallow it thoroughly. The edge of the hand is almost touching it, that shouldn't happen.

>>2978597
It isn't Asuka from Evangelion, is she?
>>
>>2978680
The contour lines should not cross or touch the centerline. There are centerlines anywhere in the body. I should not draw parts as separated but as individual shapes combined by flesh so therefore they are one mass, ribcage and pelvis will be one mass but if the pelvis does something the ribcage also gets affected and vice versa. Thanks for the insight, Anon. I'll do more tomorrow but this time I'll try harder to better myself

Ideally I'd need something that could let me see a snake in its whole, so I can observe their resting state, how they move, their anatomy, and the same goes for women, for example, how would a lamia move if she was dancing erotically and raping a young man?

>>2978696
Thanks for actually redlining me. I appreciate the effort you made, but changing the proportions to a less cartoony look isn't really better anatomy. Good work on the form of the legs, I really fucked up here and will be more careful with them. The shoulder area also looks better, I should draw the clavicles and tone the traps down. So yeah, thanks for that!

I think we both got the leg-torso connection wrong btw.

>>2978699
We're all beginners here, no need to judge. You also don't need to be an expert to give feedback on other peoples work. If you can't evaluate good from bad feedback, that's on you.
>>
>>2978910
i did, and i merely forgot to @ you. my bad. My main jab against your redline is weight distribution of muscle. specifically your backleg muscles starts too slowly and that creates a bad disposition of the mass. May be just a mistroke but because it happened twice over i doubt it.
the hand is missing is palm more or less and you did fumble a bit on the feet perspective ( either should be absent or the rest should reiterate it (IE line from knee to knee vs line from ankle to ankle and foot to foot doesn't match up). This is honestly a hard drawing just due to the fact that were all trying to play around how small her torso is.

Ranting about sexualization here is spitting into a typhoon - most of the beginners here are just neets who want to draw porn for their own amusement. It's common in most DIY forums that almost all of the work done by guys is naked women, and usually poses from porn.

You can rant against it, but you won't change it. At best, it keeps the mouth breathers interested. I just don't pay attention to it, and won't critique it if it's too blatant.

There are people legit trying art, and that's why I still bother, but the majority of posters here are the 'hurrr boobies!" crowd - which is a waste of time in terms of trying to teach art.

The frontal view of a skull is perfect. The "male" skull in side view resembles a neanderthalic one. Female head is definitely too long (from the forehead to the back of the cranium) and overall looks kinda bad (neck, really short nose, head shape), but you grasped feminine features pretty well (just add a curve denoting a soft, puffed up cheek, and you're all good). Male's ear might be placed too low, but going by the jawline, his head is raised (the face is looking up). If it isn't supposed to be raised, too bad then.
Mind that there are meat and skin layers on the bones. I think you might use an ecorche instead of a simple head:

here anon, i made you a few redlines. i dont wanna stand on a soapbox, not some art master or whatever, but anime art (especially high quality kyoani stuff) also uses fundie rules. its like you are only looking at the size of her face, rather than at the size of her head. i traced it around in the kyoani version, so you can see what i mean. practice some irl face proportions to see where everything is positioned, itll make anime faces a lot easier too. good luck with your art anon.

Trying to study skulls so I can understand the underlying structure of faces. Was going to ask for something like sketchfab.
>>
>>2979464
oh man thank you for your time! I will use this tomorrow night to study what im doing.
>>
>>2979471
There is a freeware called Skull Sketcher. Good shit, even if it has only two skulls to choose from.
>>
>>2979455
it's not exactly a waste of time so much as there could be other things you can be doing to better understand the form of the human face and what a style truly means instead of trying to copy an artist's interpretation of a face (and failing)

Actually I already have my own skeleton.
But are there any good programs with muscle?

I looked up art classes online and the only interesting one I could find is during my working hours. What do I do?

I think I saw some screenshots of it, but I don't think I can help you with that.
Anyway, there should be enough ecorches on sketchfab.

How do I find the will to grind "fundamentals" when I'm just so far from drawing anything I care about? I just started, so the sticky recommends I work on the basics like shapes, drawing from life, shadows, etc. and it's just... yeah, I can see how doing this repeatedly will help, but I want to draw other things. I stop drawing shapes and practicing shadows and the like to draw a few parts like an arm, or eyes or noses, because I want to draw more figures than drawing from life, but I don't want to skip steps.

So should I just spend days, weeks, or even months just trying to learn the fundamentals? I understand it'd help me, but I think it'd burn me out on art before I even start to draw what I like. I don't really have enough free time to draw for hours every day not drawing what I want.
>>

Post some of your work.

I'm a complete beginner, so it's... not really worth anything. I did draw my eye from reference and it's not as bad as most of my others, but I wouldn't be able to repeat it, and as you can see I shat the bed on the other eye, so I know I need those fundamentals.

It's just dedicating an hour or two a day to just drawing shapes and the occasional life item that is frustrating me.
>>
>>2979561
What do you want to draw?
>>
>>2979551
>>2979561
You don't need to grind the fundamentals in order to master drawing.
A well-thought grinding simply makes your life easier. One can do without it, but the path might be rougher and you might not make it, since it, unfortunately, would require higher intelligence coupled with quite greater memory than what is required to learn, remember, and successfully apply simpler construction methods.
>>
>>2979568

Characters, mostly. That's what I notice first and give most attention to whenever I look at art. I'm not as much a fan of super realism or super stylized, I like the mix between the two. That's why I want to learn properly, and I've been drawing shapes because I fully understand now that symbol drawing would ruin any progress I tried to make. Other than that, I do want to try drawing some things from life and not just restrict myself to figures, nor do I want to develop bad habits that prevents me from trying something new in future.

I guess in a nutshell, I want to be able to draw characters. Either characters from a game, or from TV/movies/comics, or original characters for a D&D campaign or just to draw for friends.
>>
>>2979572
Honestly, it's good to learn and all, but you have to draw what you want. So from now on only draw what you want and fix the things that aren't correct. You'll figure out what I mean soon when you see how important it is to draw what you want.
>>
>>2979587

Thanks anon. I guess I just wanted to hear if it'd be possible to get anywhere without grinding fundamentals.
>>
>>2979602
Definitely, many people don't take the traditional route anymore. Now people prefer to focus on their own art and improve as they go since that still allows them to draw what they want as well as improve at their own pace. Find your own pace and remember to have fun.

Does this kind of mistake get fixed with practice and observation or am I missing obvious crucial construction steps?
>>
>finish drawing
>something off about the proportions
>can't exactly tell what

Is it cheating to overlay the drawing over the photo reference to see what went wrong?
>>
>>2979675

No, I'd say that's a really good way of seeing what the problem is. There's no cheating involved in trying to spot what went wrong.
>>
I need to learn basic crayon work. What and where?
>>
I haven't been able to copy this shit because I keep drawing parts too damn big making it impossible to fit the rest. Do I just keep trying till my autistic ass gets it down?
>>
I want to start on figure drawing. Should I just start drawing from reference or study theory first?
>>
>>2979729
>study theory

lmao just draw
>>
>>2979729
Draw some, then figure out your most obvious flaws and focus on it. Study as needed, can't hurt but do it with purpose.

rinse and repeat forever

Get what you pay for, I guess. Nice to draw with aside from that, though. I'll have to invest in a decent one next time.
