If you are a /beg/inner in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.

We should not have to make new threads or post in the drawthread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hey, all! Thought pic related would be appropriate to post here. I'm working on drawing one of 2 women in a pool match.

While it's obviously not the final product (of the woman, at least), I thought I could ask for some feedback for my progress as well as keeping her legs aligned and elongated for her posture. Yes, I'm planning on adding shorts later on.
>>
>>2905101
While shorts might be nice, Its simply too flat which is fixable. I think one of the best books is micheal hamptons figure drawing design and invention or vilppus drawing manual, study those a bit and try to first break down the figure into simple 3d shapes and you'll see improvement.

How do I draw her nose? It seems like every time I do, it ruins the "attractiveness" of the drawing. I never noticed it until I tried to draw her, but her nose is so strangely thin.

>>
>>2905156
Print it and put it in the trash bin, wait for a minute, then take it out. Put some ketchup on it and wolf it down. Wait for some time, and when your art comes out, it will be the best rendition you can possibly make of it. Do so. Do so immediately.

Mouth is too far up, iris of the eye on the left is the same size as iris of eye on the right, rendering of the skin above the mouth looks weird, skin rendering looks uneven in general, hair could be improved but doesn't look too bad.

Make more realism studies (especially faces if you want to get good at those) along with your imagination works, if you're not doing that already.
>>
>>2905204
Are you the buttmad guy from the last thread? If you don't understand why studying from life in order to build up a foundation of knowledge that you can later expand upon is vital to creating art then maybe art just isn't for you.
>>
>>2905204
What I meant was learning how things works realistically (and by "realistically" I don't necessarily mean "hyper-realistic") in the sense that stylization like how you're doing now only shows a lack of fundamental knowledge regarding the building blocks of good art such as form, proportion, value, and so on. There is a reason /beg/ is filled mostly with fundamental exercises - because they're the anons that know what they need to do to get good.
>>
>>2905218
Thanks anon i have no clue how to render skin better but ill keep working on it and do more realism studies. Iris should be an easy fix but the mouth is something i couldnt really decide on a good spot for, could i have some help with that?

Barely can see anything, but her right foot is fucked up royally, her right arm can't look like that (just make the angle between her forearm and the upper arm less). There's also something wrong with her pelvis and hip bones, but can't point it out. And thick eyebrows make her face manlier. Even so, doesn't look bad at all, if you don't count the foot.

I'm talking about something from slightly above or below them to create a sense of depth and maybe some objects around them to complement that.

I'm just saying that while I enjoy the clothes the drawings themselves are extremely flat, lifeless and boring.

If it's too much to ask of you then you could at least try something with movement.

well, to begin, it's kind of difficult to see what's supposed to be going on. Why is there so much emphasis on the core of the figure closest to the viewer but no time spent on the limbs? The limbs make up the majority of a figure and will make ur figure read quickly but detail on the core is not necessary if ur just doing a gesture

Hello.
My drawings are far from AAA tier cool graphics or naked anime men from patreon, and I'm not certain what to do with it.
I've skimmed through the sticky books long ago, but my scribbles neither look as good as I'd like them to be, nor, apparently, as they should if I read the books.
Worse still, I feel quite forsaken as well. The serious Art™ acquitances I've got, which are various teachers and concept artists, question my ambitions instead of at least subtle guiding. May I be wrong, this feels like being rejected either way.
I don't want to re-read sticky with a vacant look like I usually do, I'd like to get some interaction.

>how do you decide when to stop pushing detail in a drawing and start painting?
This can vary, some people start with blobs of paint right away, without any drawing. In digital you can do this because it is basically infinitely forgiving. But principally it would be a good idea to get basic proportions down, like in the videos you linked. If you know how you want to shade it, you could add lines defining shadow areas.

Have you tried to draw symbols that are similar in the shape to the subject you are drawing?

Seriously tho, watch some tut on facial features, they dont draw lips, they draw few soft pillows wrapped around cylinder.
They dont draw eyes, they draw ball with somewhat thick layers wrapped around it seated in a indentation.
If you draw small format images like I do, then there is a chance no matter how much you try, all your facial features are flat and small simply because its impossible to draw them more detailed.
Was the case with my facial features.

Indeed i didn't use gesture or well, i was trying to but found myself unable to properly gesture it without first getting the perspective of things right. (Pic sorta related, same paper, was trying to make some research on cute hip hop girls making interesting poses)

It could be that i'm not using gesture the way it's intended? I tried and tried on the Jolyne but couldn't be satisfied with the gesture since i couldn't capture the perspective easily.

Let's say i'm finding myself in a kind of drawing procedure loop: hard to get the gesture right without the perspective, hard to get the perspective right without the gesture.
What should i do to tackle this one?
(or maybe "Going for a less difficult pose and coming back to this later" might actually be the only solution))

If it makes you feel any better, I used but I still botched it, she leans back far more than I or you drew.

>It could be that i'm not using gesture the way it's intended?
Cant say I am an expert on the subject.
I torrented prokos premium tuts on gesture and rewatched them few time.
Pic is gesture I drew, it doesnt have to be anything particular, all those cross contures come later, the very basic thing is to get the idea right.

I first go with gesture and then get perspective right (or more or less right) when I put construction (boxes, cylinders, spheres) on the gesture.

>Going for a less difficult pose and coming back to this later" might actually be the only solution
I wouldnt say that, the choice is up to you but I spend years drawing humans in 3/4 perspective.
The shading and everything was top notch but I couldnt draw them in any other pose till I got back to basic, and started actually learning how to draw.
I think getting out of your comfort zone is the only way to get any progress, whats they point in drawing stuff you already can draw well.

I come here seeking advice... I'm currently studying Loomis's Drawing heads and hands, it's a fine book, however I have a problem with his ball and plane method. Ball and plane is great if you need to draw a person in "normal" position, that is if person is not looking up or down. When person is looking up, I have 0 idea what to do. Loomis claims that you can construct any head using his method, I don't doubt him, but I still cannot construct viable face that looks upwards or downward... How do I "calculate" the correct dimensions, I know the whole thing is due to foreshortening. I am missing something vital here? Do I have to abandon his method in case the face is looking down/up and rely more on configuration of bones and plates?

The purpose of the ball and head method is to see the head as a 3dimensional shape. You will need to study the actual anatomy of the head FIRST then you need to go into breaking the features down into basic shapes (2D and 3D)

If you don't know how to draw the head from any angle but you can draw properly proportioned 3D shapes from any angle, then you are lacking in your knowledge of anatomy

>>

Usually student blogs, sometimes Feng mentions stuff in his videos too.

And yeah, they have four modules running at once, so they typically have four assignments and studio time where they can work on whatever they want. It's basically up to them to finish stuff. Most say they finish their assignment on the day they get it, so they don't have to worry about it later.

The construction one, I imagine takes 5-6 hours maybe? It's one of the earlier assignments, so it shouldn't be all that hardcore where they have to lose sleep yet.
>>
>>2906315

Do you by any chance know what this four modules are, or what fundamentals they teach? I suppose one of them must be perspective, but what about the rest?

Absolutely. I need to up my game to keep up, man. 3 to 6 constructions a week, from vehicles to insects. Visual communication, I imagine must refer to the Peter Han type of sketching where you use wrapping lines and simple shapes to analyze stuff and build up visual library?

I should try doing some sort of schedule that imitates FZD, it'll help not waste so much time wondering what to do next.

Yeah pretty much. Visual communication is just drawing things that a typical person may not want to draw such as you know, insects, ships, and cars.

All of them have to be done in the draw through method and plotted because visual communication means the drawing or design is able to be understood as a car instead of a spaceship or something.

Accuracy is important and that's probably why they spend so much time on it in the beginning.

It's impossible for the layman to do an FZD schedule though mate. The modules are created in such a way that they take up a large amount of time.

Even in the very beginning when they're doing just lines and boxes, it seems to take them hours and have to be perfect. Couple that with doing three other assignments that take up more or less the same amount of time, you're looking at a 40 hour week.

Seems doable, I want to make a career out of this so it is only to be expected that I should act like this is a real job already. I think the real issue of self-teaching is the time spent gathering sources and the understanding the proper methods and techniques to practice, just finding out what exactly you need to know, and how that'll be carried it out, in what span of time.

Well, sure it's not 40 exactly, but that's more possible than say 60-80+ don't you think? It really just depends on how much effort you care to put in or if you want to put in the bare minimum to get by.

It is true that it's somewhat difficult because of all those reasons, but at the end of the day, it's really just more important to just get some paper and draw something you haven't before. Even if you try a draw-through method without knowing how it completely works, at least you tried to solve a problem.

The time doesn't really matter. If you're not in school, then take all the time you need to make something the best you can.

I believe it's because the digital colour wheels are based on wavelengths so the distribution is done on measurable differences in colour, while the "traditional" colour wheel was invented centuries ago and is based more on human vision which is more sensitive to red wavelengths so the entire warm portion of the colour wheel ended up being stretched.

Different anon here, but this makes me wonder...
1.Is there even something like an accurate color wheel (scientific depictions of wavelenghts are on scales) and if so, how would it be determined? By opposing colors yielding in a perfectly neutral grey?
2. How do color relationships work, if they're based on a skewed color wheel? Conditioning? Or because it isn't really an exact science to begin with?
3.What reasons are there to choose one wheel over the other, especially when painting digitally?
4.Other than for color mixing, is a color wheel even neccessary at all?

Cool link btw, Gurney's blog is pretty amazing.

Term 1 isn't really all that important in terms of what they do so it's not posted, but term 2 and 3 are pretty clear and can be found just about anywhere on google. Charles Lin's tumblr has him posting most of the assignments.

Although, in the end it's nothing special. They just do things like any other projects you would do for concept art. Receive a concept, receive limitation, etc. and follow them.

It's often stated by students, they have a lot of free reign especially in term 3 where they get to make one completely of their own free will.

I think it goes something like this for VisCom
Wk 1 - Lines and Boxes on 3 A3 paper
Wk 2 - Consistent Handwriting
Wk 3 - Boxes
Wk 4 - Insects
Wk 5 - Probably Same Stuff
Wk 6 - Block Vehicles
Wk 7 - Tall Ships, Trains, Automobiles steam edition
Wk 8 - Insects with exoskeletons (Scorpions, Spiders, Arachnids) for Soft and Hard Surface work
Wk 9 - Probably Same Stuff
Wk 10 - 18 repeat with different themes

Judging by the impersonation trolling, I take it that either the hair wasn't fixed at all or someone is still buttmad at me (not surprising at all, though). Anyway, I do indeed want to work on the hair more, this time by following the guidance I received from the other place and seeing which way works better.

Ok. Although I'm not sure if the model in the last picture of the tutorial is bending her back too or her back is straight up.
Well, I guess that's why I was told that her pubic hair seems to be placed too close to her navel.

>>
>>2906806

Always make a center line, that will your center for the whole body and it will divide it in half. I can see clearly that's not what you did. I know it's painfully tedious but always do it.

Also, use the multiplication method to find where stuff at either side will be exactly, as it recedes in space (legs, wings). Looks to me like you were merely guessing. Don't worry about gestural poses for these exercises, make them be perfectly symmetrical, the point here to to master perspective techniques, and also presentation! Don't chicken scratch, use your shoulder and be confident with your strokes!. Keep it up, buddy.

If your drawing person was angling their pelvis upwards, the pubic hair would be foreshortened and the belly would scrunch up.

>>
>>2907010
No but that's an advice, the main thing that I can say is that you're drawing like you know how to draw, you have to pull yourself out of the comfort zone, so draw people in the street, you'll have different type of faces, angles, shadows
>>
>>2907015
ok, what about the method?
and cant i just search the web for faces?
>>
>>2907031
No because there is something different between live model and photography, and a lot of people don't understand that and think that with only google you can learn drawing
But when you're looking at a photo you're assimiling lines that the camera created by its "2D eye", but seing something moving and in 3d will force your eye to find itself the line you need to draw
that's kinda hard to explain when you're not talking english very well, sorry about that
>>
>>2907031
>>2907040
+being in the street drawing people that aren't posing is a good exercise, you need to be fast and you don't have to make a perfect doodle, you just have to capture the essential
>>
>>2906935
Better. Bump up the contrast and don't forget about the overall form, like the roundness of the head.

Make the head bigger. His staff isn't continuous in your depiction. The best way to fix this would be to move his arm with the upper end of the staff closer to his head (and shorten the sleeve) correspondingly). Make the other sleeve wider. Other than that, there's not much to say about bare outlines. Add details, then we will talk.

worth it imo. its really better than going out and finding artists on your own. just don't go thinking you can get your moneys worth without networking. And by networking dont take it so seriously, i just mean make really good friends and impressions. Otherwise, you just kind of float through uni and get a piece of paper and a load of debt.
>>
>>2907183
It really depends on what you want. To young people the time and money commitment might seem like a lot, but it really isn't.
The question is how do you want to spend your time? If you go to school for STEM or enter a trade then the resulting careers will eat up most of your time and energy, if you add a relationship/family to the equation there goes even more.
>>
>>2905593
Don't worry anon, just try to make the learning process fun. You'll make it with enough mileage and optimism.

I've read sticky, it directs me to Loomis and Drawing from right-side, i have studied and chaotically applied these books last year and it was last year when i tried to get into drawing and dropped/failed.

Im a beginner who aims to draw his own manga/comic stories.
