post here please

Post your current drawing here and provide helpful criticism and advice to others!

Head feels huge. Proportions are a bit large in specific areas. Could be fixed. Rendering effort could be greater. Needs more contrast. Also learn what is appealing to the eye. Also line variation instead of just thick lines would help your piece greatly.

i quite like it, although i feel like the outline could vary more (like be much thinner on the cheek)
also, your crosshatching is messy- i like it on the left eye only. It would be better if you left the lower part of the face with only one layer of lines. It is a total mess under his chin

is there any software that mimics real life pencil paintings? I just tried to make a realistic shaded pencil portrait on photoshop but it feels awful.

I hate that you have to lift the pen if you want to go over the same area and produce any changes instead of building up as in traditional techniques. This makes blending a total pain.

Pose is unbalanced unless she's perched on something. One of her legs is shorter than the other, similar issue with her arms. There's a bit of a tangent where the hilt of the knife meets the jacket zipper-whatever-thing. About the line weight - well, you're just gonna have to simplify the rendering style if you want to put some colors on it. Would look more interesting if the details were drawn with a smaller brush, but overall it's nice. I really like her smile. Keep up the good work.

wasn't me saying that but the texture of the hair on the ass is unsettling and reminds me of a hairy man's ass which I'm sure wasn't your intention. You're on the way to somewhere but I think blanketing on the hair texture all over looks weird. I don't know much about how furry art people normally do it but I don't think the rendering is done in that fashion often. I guess you should just look at some other artist for ideas.
>>
>>2854053
Crushing the blacks and blowing out the highlights is going to make it look flat if you don't know what you're doing. There are ways to do this well but unless you have a specific reason to it's better to avoid doing both. You're also using black to render shadows which makes things look dirty.

>>
>>2855057
I honestly respect your work a lot, I love it, only by understanding the methods of previous greats can we truly discover our style. The one issue I have with your work is your still lives are quite boring. I think you should work with a figure, this style of painting you're in right now would look great along with figure. I have seen figure ones in this style (or similar to) by you and enjoyed them quite a bit.

I think the best route for you to go is into fine arts, conceptualizing ideas and executing them. I don't know how much you fuck with this notion of Atelier artists being the pinnacle of art, but it's all bullshit, and a waste of your time if this Atelier-esque dream is your goal. Your art lends itself to more than that.

I might have gone on a pretty big tangent, but I just just wanted to say that, I also don't comment very often. I respect you quite a bit as an artist, you push past all the negativity that is on this board, and keep going forward. /ic/ needs fewer negative people, and more people giving real critique. More than half on here will burn out because they follow ridiculous mantras that are just ridiculous. We make art because we enjoy it, and people on this board ooze that they just want some 1 step program to success, and from what I see that you post I don't get that vibe.

Good on you, Brian, keep on going.
>>
>>2855045
You need better work ethic for either of those, simply copying their styles is not going to get you there
>>
>>2854708
An important part of painting fur or hair is knowing what detail to omit, overuse of texture brushes is not going to ever look as elegant as thoughtful, simple painting.
Keep in mind that more detail is usually seen in lighter areas as opposed to shadow.
>>

>>
>>2854708
The issue is that the styles clash. You made photoreal fur but the eyes and facial features still look cartoony. Also, I don't think furry stuff can work when you make it look too real cause then they look too much like actual animals instead of anthro characters. Plus the character you're drawing has heavily stylized proportions that are suited for a more simple style, they don't transition well into this type of rendering. Try to keep the fur simpler next time and avoid bringing things to that level of detail, it doesn't work with most furry art imo.

I wasn't terrible. I knew how to draw anime, lulz. I guess you could say that I was a beginner because I didn't practice my fundamentals but that all changed when going to art school. It really kicked me into gear and I'd say I improved by 70% in 4 years.

My only bits of advice would be, if you can't afford it and have to take out loans, DON'T... There's plenty of helpful critique, mentors, communities, info, etc. online for FREE. You just have to take it upon yourself to work and grind everyday single fucking day, even if you're in art school you have to grind everyday and I'm not even that good. Luckily, I was able to get a full-ride scholarship.

Oh, one last thing about art school, I was fortunate enough to find work while in school but I know MANY fellow classmates and graduates working as dishwashers and cashiers. I don't want to dissuade you but honestly, ask yourself if you think you have the chops to validate going to art school and finding work.

Again, don't want to dissuade because it can be so helpful and fulfilling, post your work?

I've done a few a few digital plein airs recently, this is my first one in oil. I am trying to slowly get decent at landscapes so I can do a few from life when warmer weather starts.
I would want to know what I can try doing better on the next one, so any advice/critique is more than welcome. I am trying to do these in one session ( I did do a quick underpainting/sketch in raw umber on this one but that's it ), because when I will be doing them from life I plan to do them in one session.

Ehmm not sure if you are going to like what I have to say. I do not want to insult you or be mean, okay?
As first, Don't draw/sketch with black, it always looks kinda ugly, especially if you try painting between the lines, it also makes your painting look flat. Black lines can be used! But it's mostly at the end for stylistic choices.

Second, There is no proper value difference in your painting, so it looks even more flat, I would study how value works, casts, still-lifes with a lamp, anything. In your painting it's visible that you don't have a good understanding of values.

Drawing, The hands look pretty cool, but the face has symbol drawing going on, areas are fine, but let's say the eyes look strange, there are just a lot of drawing mistakes.

Colors can be stylized, but you should definitely try getting more understanding with them, observe a lot, paint from imagination but using reference to figure things out, photostudies, studies from life.

In general, this is not bad, but not good either, you can do it though anon! Use some refs, fix it up! And just study a lot : D

bring a viewfinder with you to get perspective right when you work plein air. other than that, expect to do most of the work on the painting in your studio because it's hard to get more than the colors and general shape in one session.

whenever I work plein air I always think I've been working forever on something and i check my phone and it's been an hour. it's incredibly draining working outside.

i really like your colors here but i think the anatomy needs work. her pose is unbalanced and her stance looks weak. i think especially the legs need work here.
the problem with the hands is that they look a bit week, like "anime hands", basically they dont really look like they are holding anything or leaning on something, they look a bit light and child-like
good luck with the rest of your drawing, if you look at more refs im sure itll work out.

>>2856454
Search for hand/feet poses on google images/pinterest/deviantart any place really they're not hard to find, or use your own real life ones as reference. Sketch them all, don't spend longer than say 5 minutes on each. Mileage is more important than making pretty pictures, you trying to LEARN here so make that your priority. Look up some tutorials on constructing them too.
It's might be a pain but if you commit to drawing them all in a set time and don't give up you'll come out the other end knowing a hell of a lot more about hands and feet.
>>
>>2856466

>>
>>2856468
That's the reason you need to do this, you'll learn as you go. Maybe your first 20 attempts will be trash but youll get 1% better with each one. If you're worried about drawing too many wrinkles and details set your self a 5 minute or 2 minute timer and stick to that, then you won't have time to get caught up in details.

Does anyone else have any cheat codes like this?

It's incredibly helpful for drawing from imagination when I don't have to sit there and think "how do I move this vanishing point to get to here?"
>>
>>2856578
>cheat code
It's not really a cheat code if you have to train it and make the image clearer
When I do it, I see multiple perspectives, so I can't draw what I visualize, it's too vague still.
Maybe one day I will harness the control to be able to do it, but today is not that day.

Really good start.

Next time start on a grey background, compress your value range and only have a few areas of complete black for your darkest dark and complete white for the highlights. This will help it sit in space and not be so flat. That being said really good so far.

Next work on your edges, its harder to do softer edges but you're alright, just add a few hard edges where the form turns more suddenly rather than gradually. Cool brushwork tho.

However, before all that look at your proportions and anatomy, the head is too small and for a girl the shoulders are usually the same width as the hips. Be careful of over rounding all the forms, allow the lower abs to flatten, and lets the breasts show more weight, etc.

And draw the fucking hands and face next time you pussy. They're super important.

Good work on the faces, but the legs and torsos aren't proportionately foreshortened; the legs are too small, or the torsos are too big. It also looks like the dude is jumping, while the girl is standing idle, and cut and pasted sideways.
The guy's legs are totally off, too, unless he's meant to have a massive gut and a pelvis that sits a good foot and a half below it.

Whoa, this is cute. How long have you been drawing?
>>
>>2854708

That fur is way too much. Like everyone has already said, you need to scale that detail back for a character like that heavily. Honestly in general that level of detail is absurd and takes away from the focus, and you should use it subtlety on focal areas/areas of light. The butt can be that ragged, but using it excessively in dark areas looks bad. It's honestly better to be controlled and subdued with a texture brush in general than go insane.

tl;dr you over rendered, and not in the right places. There's quite a few good artist to ref if you wanna see how to do a better job with it. Veramundis does a particularly good job. I like it in this aswell (not mine).

I didn't really use any "strict" reference. I could say the city is inspired by Los Angeles or any big North American city and the house has been inspired by your average modern house. It took two afternoons.

Nice little perspective study. One major issue is that the 3rd VP is wrong. If you're looking down at something vertical lines will converge downward. Here we're looking down at a house but verticals are angle upward. Basically you did a bird's eye view with a worm's eye perspective.

Thanks.

About the 3rd vanishing point, it shouldn't even be there, this was supposed to be a 2 vanishing point drawing and in theory the vertical lines should be parallel and I'm not sure why they look like they converge downward.

Maybe you can help me out with this problem I have with the 3rd VP. If I'm looking down the vertical lines should converge downward, but what happens once those lines go above the horizon? Doesn't it look a bit.. weird? I mean, I understand that above the horizon lines should converge on a vanishing point up in the sky, but how do I do that transition between "converging down" and "converging up" at the horizon level? Shitty MS Paint drawing related.

OK
so I did a paint over so I could show you some points that I'm going to bring up, I hope that's ok with you

The flowers colors are a bit dull and washed out bc of over saturation of both itself and the hand, so there's no contrast between the two main focal points. To fix that, I darkened the purples and the greens, since the saturation in the flower and the stem/petals was almost the same.
To fix the focal point to the flower, I took away the illumination glare to the leafy part, which wouldn't happen anyway since they don't reflect light (to that extreme), they absorb it.
This is also something I took note to when painting over the top right leaf, since normally a leaf in harsh light wouldn't have an extremely darker part like a lot of other objects.
Think of it like skin, when harsh light hits, the saturation goes up but it won't quite reflect, in that way a leaf would be pretty much the same.
Though, since this is a rose its leaf is pretty thick and the light won't quite shine through it as much as a thinner one, and you did get the texture right, but I hope you get the idea that I meant to reproduce with the paint over.
